The Spitzenkandidaten in the European Parliament Election Campaign Coverage 2014 in Germany, France, and the United Kingdom

Schulze, Heidi 21 June 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Elections to the European Parliament are characterised by a steady decline in voter turnout. To tackle this problem, in 2014, several groups of the European Parliament nominated pan-European Spitzenkandidaten who were expected to personalise the elections and mobilise European voters. Based on this development, this study analyses the media cov-erage of the 2014 EP elections with special focus on the role of the Spitzenkandidaten. A quantitative content analysis of European election campaign coverage in the opinion leading newspapers of three influential EU member states, Ger-many, France, and the United Kingdom was carried out. The results show large candidate- and country-specific differ-ences regarding the visibility and thematic coverage of the EP elections in general as well as the presentation of the Spitzenkandidaten. The Spitzenkandidaten were not very visible in either the German, French, or British newspaper cov-erage. With respect to the presence and media personalisation of the Spitzenkandidaten, the newspaper coverage of the EP election does not demonstrate any mobilising effect and thus does not reflect the high expectations the European Parliament attributed to the nomination of the Spitzenkandidaten.

The Social and Political Impact of Natural Disasters : Investigating Attitudes and Media Coverage in the Wake of Disasters

Albrecht, Frederike January 2017 (has links)
Natural disasters are social and political phenomena. Social structures create vulnerability to natural hazards and governments are often seen as responsible for the effects of disasters. Do social trust, political trust, and government satisfaction therefore generally change following natural disasters? How can media coverage explain change in political attitudes? Prior research suggests that these variables are prone to change, but previous studies often focus on single cases, whereas this dissertation adopts a broader approach, examining multiple disasters. It investigates the social and political impact of natural disasters by examining their effect on social and political attitudes and by exploring media coverage as a mechanism underlying political consequences. The results reveal that natural disasters may have a comparatively frequent, although small and temporary, effect on social trust. Substantial effects are less likely. Social trust was found to decrease significantly when disasters cause nine or more fatalities (Paper I). Political attitudes were expected to be prone to change after natural disasters, but Paper II illustrates that political trust and government satisfaction among citizens are generally hardly affected by these events. Finally, media framing and the political claims of actors explained the variation in political consequences after disasters of similar severity. Paper III also illustrates the importance of the political context of natural disasters, as their occurrence can be strategically exploited by actors to further criticism towards the government in politically tense situations. This dissertation contributes to existing disaster research by investigating more cases than disaster studies typically do. It also uses a systematic case selection process, and a quantitative approach with a, for disaster research, unique research design. Hence, it offers methodological nuance to existing studies. A broader analysis, factoring in the variation of disaster severity and the increased number of cases offers new answers and tests assumptions about underlying patterns. The main contribution of this thesis is that it examines how common political and social effects of disasters are. Furthermore, this dissertation contributes to existing disasters research by emphasizing contextual and explanatory factors, e.g., properties of disasters and the political context that affects the media coverage of natural disasters.

Brosseau, Patricia 04 1900 (has links)
The media attribute a great significance to criminal events. However, those are not all reported in the same way. The media treatment of one generally depends of its sensationalism. The more impressive the event is, the more importance will be given by the media. Although street gangs have been very much present in the news content for several years, very few studies have assessed the extent to which the phenomenon is appealing to the media in relation to all criminal news. Considering the importance of media content and its impact on our society, the present study focuses on this question in order to determine whether the news about street gangs are treated differently. The sample of this study consists of 417 reports from Radio-Canada’s TV channel and Internet content, from that 210 are related to street gangs and 207 don’t bear on the phenomenon. The results suggest that the audiovisual and digital media present a more specific aspect of the phenomenon. Reports about street gangs are also more detailed and benefit from a greater mediatic treatment, regardless the medium of information used. Independently of the components that determine what make good news, the events involving street gangs and their members seem to receive a special media treatment.

Obraz české politiky v německých a rakouských denících na příkladu prezidentských voleb v roce 2013 / The image of the czech polities in german daily newspapers illustrated by the example of the presidential election in 2013

Niedermeierová, Jana January 2015 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis The Image of the Czech Politics in German and Austrian Daily Newspapers Illustrated by the Example of the Presidential Election in 2013 is to analyse the media coverage of the first direct presidential election in Czech Republic in 2013 in German and Austrian daily newspapers. German periodicals Frankfurter Rundschau, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Welt and Austrian newspapers Der Standard, Die Presse and Salzburger Nachrichten were chosen for the analysis. German and Austrian press paid extraordinary attention to this election mainly because of the topic of the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War, which was reopened during the pre-election discussions. Moreover, one candidate, the former Czech minister of foreign affairs Karel Schwarzenberg, spent most of his life in Austrian exile which was another reason for the German and Austrian media interest in this election. The diploma thesis analyses articles about Czech election that appeared in the selected newspapers in the period from January 1, 2013 to March 31, 2013. It focuses on the amount of space devoted to the topic in the selected newspapers and on the coverage of the election considering both content and formal aspects. It analyses also which topics came to the fore and how...

Mediální reflexe politické agendy prezidenta Václava Klause / Media reflection of the president Václav Klaus' political agenda

Picková, Zuzana January 2012 (has links)
Presidents are said to exert their influence mainly through addressing the public and public speaking. Setting the media agenda is considered as one of the presidents' main strategic powers. Although the contemporary Czech president Václav Klaus enjoys substantial media attention, it is not granted that the media report on everything he says and emphasises. This research focuses on the interaction between presidential speeches at important occasions, represented by the 1 January, 28 October, and 17 November address, and the media represented by three nation-wide dailies Mladá fronta DNES, Právo and Blesk. The time span of the research is 2007 to 2011. The analysis seeks to examine how often were the presidential speeches reported by the media, and which particular topics from them generated press coverage. The results show that the media were mostly attracted by the 1 January address, while the 17 November speech received least attention. It has also emerged that the media reporters have been choosing selectively which topics from the speeches to cover. The scope of the space dedicated to each of the topics by the president in his speeches has not been reflected by the journalists. Therefore, significant differences in the topical priorities between the presidential and media agenda were...

Postava Jidáše Iškariotského prizmatem médií a veřejnosti v 21. století v kontextu státních maturit a současné populární kultury / The figure of Judas Iscariot through the prism of the media and the public in the 21st century in the context of state leaving exam and contemporary pop culture

Dostálová, Marie January 2016 (has links)
The following thesis, The Judas Iscariot figure, as seen by media and the public, in the 21st century in the context of the state graduation exam and contemporary pop culture, deals with the biblical figure who has betrayed Jesus Christ. The apostle, whose name has become a synonym for betrayal, was mentioned in one of the questions of the didactical test regarding Czech language and literature in the state graduation exam in the Czech Republic in 2015. The pupils were supposed to recognize Judas with help of his cognomen and other hints. Many students have complained about this task, saying that it was too difficult, while others have claimed that the question was not related to the subject. The complaint became an issue frequented in all the significant media and heavily discussed in society. The first chapters of the thesis describe the official requirements for the state graduation exam and the study plans for secondary schools, where the Bible is listed. The following chapters highlight and discuss the media coverage of the affair in the printed and online media, as well as in the radio and TV stations. Additionally, the student's opinions about the issue are mentioned, together with the jokes related to the topic, reactions of the experts and internet users commenting the topic under the internet...

Monteiro, Lieli Karine Vieira Loures Malard 22 March 2016 (has links)
This research stems from the reading of a news story coverage and unveils the production process of news stories and their dissemination, negotiated by media, law, and gender studies. We begin with the empirical analysis of the journalistic content produced by Folha de São Paulo between January 2009 and May 2015 about the incidents involving the investigation, trial, escape and arrest of Roger Abdelmassih - specialist in assisted human reproduction condemned to 278 years of prison for committing crimes against the sexual dignity of 37 patients. The process of reading posed questions about the news coverage. In search for answers, we interviews journalists and lawyers involved in the case and found differences and relations of interdependence in their work, which condition the events in 1) legal facts culminating in private processes in the legal system and 2) in journalistic facts culminating in information translated into publishable texts in the press, as demonstrated in the 2nd chapter of this dissertation. Media studies point the limitations of journalistic procedures and its insertion in the daily lives and the repetition process of commen sense that may be challenged in special conditions (MORETZSHON, 2007). But feminist research (SEGATO, 2003) highlights the importance of the information circulated by the media to defend women\'s rights. Gender studies trace the construction of gender stereotypes and the patriarchal gender order that ground the moral values on which the stigma and prejudice that affect rape victims is forged (SAFFIOTI, 2015). In the content analysis of Folha de São Paulo we found the use of inadequate terms to name the victims and the aggressor, legal errors, and unconnected value judgments about the case. These dominant and erroneous views about rape victims must be deconstructed by a different type of journalistic procedure. This research demonstrates that in disconnecting from legal facts, the news coverage confined sexual violence to a private realm. By not treating it as a matter of public health, it did not promote the circulation of useful information that would help the women\'s rights cause.

Enseignement des sciences, méthode scientifique, la formation de l’esprit critique : contribution à une anthropologie des pratiques de l’enseignement des sciences à l’ère du numérique / Science teaching, scientific method, the training of critical mind

Dervis, Philip 08 December 2016 (has links)
“Think global, act local” this formula used at the first environmental summit in 1972, seems synthesize the mind of sustainable development. Today, at Internet age, when we teach science, is required to have a global vision of the world for local action teaching. At Internet time, how a global vision of the World influences local action like science teaching? For report what could be the science teacher life in this digital age, we conducted an ethnographic participant study by becoming a physical chemistry professor in a middle school in the Haut-Var, in France. During those years, while occupying a real place in the life of the school, we questioned the science object, its history, its actors, its media coverage, and its presence in our environment, school and his social challenges. And of course, require time and resources, drawing from what existed on the Web, we have set up and maintained a blog pedagogical science: Discover and measure the World.

Impacts of CSR media coverage on corporate stock return

Wei, Kuang Shao Unknown Date (has links)
This study is to investigate whether CSR Media coverage has positive and negative impacts on corporate stock returns using Taiwan listed company sample data (0050.TT Taiwan Top 50). We use a simple text-analysis approach to quantify CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Chinese news at newspapers to test if CSR news influences investor behavior and shareholder wealth changes. This study discovers that, while positive CSR news bring in insignificant negative cumulative abnormal return, negative CSR news have significant impacts on stock announcement returns. The evidence supports the argument that corporate negative CSR news (compare with positive CSR news) is unexpected by investors and have significant impacts on investor risk concern and results in negative announcement returns. Secondly, we follow Michael Porter (2006), we decompose CSR good news into three categories, and we discover that CSR news related to value creation activities has significant positive stock returns. After we control well-known systematic risk and adjust transaction cost, this study discovers that Investors can earn significant positive returns using either long-only trading strategy for stocks with value-creation CSR good news and short-only trading strategy for bad news on corporate governance issues. Our findings suggest that the CSR information dissemination affects stock returns.
