Vizuální rámcování teroristických ústoků v průběhu let / Visual framing of terrorist attacks over the years

Chomátová, Nikola January 2017 (has links)
Diploma thesis Visual framing of terrorist attacks over the years focuses on how the selected terrorist attacks are presented in four Czech daily newspapers. The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on visual framing - which is based on the theoretical grounds of the concept of framing - and the visual presentation of terrorist attacks in the media. The aim of the research is to compare the visual framing of the attack in London in July 2005 and in Paris in 2015 using a quantitative content analysis of photographs accompanying the news coverage of attacks. The emphasis was on general frames of photographs accompanying the news coverage of both attacks and the difference between the framing of both events, the extent of the violence displayed, the differences in the visual framing of quality and tabloid press with a focus on photographs of victims and injured, and the relation of the title and the caption with the visual frames of analyzed visuals. Other research papers and studies of visual framing of terrorist attacks and related topics are also presented.

Un musée des autres ? Discours de l'institution et co-constructions médiatiques / A museum of others ? Discourse of institution and media co-constructions

Grosjean, Lætitia 15 January 2016 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the institutional discourse of the Quai Branly Museum (MQB) from two perspectives: the implementation of a declared interdisciplinarity between anthropology and art history, and the museum’s intention to be a place "where cultures dialogue", as its slogan has it. The study of the construction and circulation of meaning takes two forms: (1) an observation of the gradual development of the concept behind the museum, through analysis of the interaction between the discourse of institutional actors and the social discourses in the media (1996-2006); (2) a study of the mediation process and media coverage of MQB’s cultural productions after its opening (2006-2013). The proposed approach is a socio-semiotic reading-analysis of museum communication that looks into representations of otherness through the prisms of the social topos of common sense and a theorization of cultural triviality. The methodologies are adapted to the complementary corpora investigated. Thus, a daily news corpus (1996-2006) is studied using discourse analysis as a discursive moment contained in an event-type framework, titles of temporary exhibitions (2006-2013) by an analysis inspired by interpretative semantics, exhibition posters (2006-2013) by a visual semiotic, and finally, five exhibitions (2011-2013) are analyzed as expographic discourse linked to text circulation (press kits and press releases, website pages, exhibition catalogs and cultural press). The thesis shows that from the public assertion of its declared ethos to its ethos in action, the MQB is a museum of "us" which stages Others, serving as a tool for the promotion of art.

Constructing #MeToo - A Critical Discourse Analysis of the German News Media's Discursive Construction of the #MeToo Movement

Eilermann, Wiebke January 2018 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine how German newspapers discursively constructed the #MeToo movement in order to determine whether the hashtag campaign was legitimized or delegitimized. The ideological construction can be seen as an indication of social change or respectively the upholding of the status quo in regard to gender equality. Of further interest was how the coverage can be perceived as an example of a post-feminist sensibility in mainstream media.Approach: Relevant articles published during two time periods in 2017 and 2018, following defining events of the #MeToo movement, were retrieved from selected publications, including Die Welt, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit. A qualitative critical discourse analysis applying Norman Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional approach was performed on 41 newspaper articles. Results: Through analysis, three main discursive strands emerged: (1) supportive coverage of #MeToo (2) opposing coverage of #MeToo (3) #MeToo as complex. The degree to which the articles adhered to these positions varied from publication to publication. The most conservative publication largely delegitimized the movement by, amongst others, drawing on a post-feminist discourse. Whereas the liberal publications predominantly constructed #MeToo as legitimate. Overall, there was little discussion of marginalized voices and opportunities for progressive solutions leading to social change. Conclusion: The analysis of the German media debate around #MeToo offers a perspective onto the tensions and potentials of the recent media-driven conversation about sexism and sexual harassment. Additionally, it gives some indication of the public attitudes towards gender issues in Germany.(Social) Implications: This thesis contributes to a growing pool of research on news media’s framing of social movements. With its critical impetus, it might add a small input to social change directed at gender equality.

Det ligger träd överallt! : Tre stormar, tre decennier och fyra dagstidningars rapportering / Trees have fallen everywhere! : Three storms, three decades and the writings of four daily newspapers

Norehall, Thomas January 2021 (has links)
The three largest storms in Sweden in modern time (1954, 1969 and 2005) are in focus in this thesis. By doing a narrative analysis of the countries four leading newspapers, the aim is to find out what stories are constructed during and after big crises such as storms. And more specifically what those narratives say about Sweden, being looked at in a historical rearview window. The result shows that the people of Sweden are portrayed as gender conservatives and that they are all ethnic swedes. There are no room for immigrants in the narratives. The narrative concerning every storm differs though, depending how the inhabitants act. In 1954 Sweden is portraited as a nation where everybody do things together and helps out. During the storm 1969 ordinary peoples efforts are no longer requested. The state promises to take care of everything. When it can´t keep its promises voices from the media and the government are requesting an even stronger state. But in 2005 there have been an era of liberalisation and deregulation. Private companies are now in charge of the electric power supply. After the storm the power is out in many places and people behave differently. Some are passive and demands that the electricity works, other are doing the best of the situation. People are more active on the countryside than in the cities. All are however blaming the electricity companies. But what we see is a more fragmented country than before, where the biggest victims are the small foresters who in many cases have lost everything, they own. They were victims even in the earlier storms, but in 1969, when Sweden, in many ways, was a world leading country the foresters’ stories were not to be heard. In 2005 the forest farmers story are once again told, they who loses everything and, in some cases, commit suicide. They stand as reminders of the old and very poor Sweden, an outskirt in the world. This narrative can have its explanation in the assumption that when the times are uncertain, or changing, a nation looks at its history.

An investigation into the patterns of news media consumption among South African youth

Maphiri, Fulufhelo Oscar January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (Media Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / For years traditional and digital media have played an essential role of disseminating news and information to keep their target audience always updated about what is happening nationally and internationally. News consumption has globally been experiencing enormous deviations due to advancements in technology. In this context, the study examined and analysed news consumption patterns among the rural youth living in Limpopo Province South Africa. The study employed a sequential mixed research method. A self-administered questionnaire and semi-structured personal interview were used to collect data from youth aged between 18-34 years. A sample of 320 youth participated in the study, with 300 in quantitative and 20 in qualitative methods of research used to gather data for the study. Youth participants were randomly selected using convenience non-probability sampling. The data collected through a questionnaire were analysed using the Statistical Programme for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, inferential and descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were thematically analysed and interpreted considering diverse themes, sub-themes and common statements. The study results revealed that most youth highly preferred to access and consume news through online media more than television and newspapers because digital media are cheap, easily accessible and affordable. The findings further indicated that most youth highly preferred to consume news through television channels such as ETV because it is a credible and reliable source of news. It is highlighted in the results that most youth preferred to consume entertainment news more than business, political and sport news because they find the former interesting and relaxing. Also, most youth did prefer to discuss entertainment news with family members and friends and that there are positive relationships between media credibility and news consumption which tend to influence family and friends’ news discussions. In a nutshell, the findings of this study further suggest a philosophical change in news consumption patterns among South African youth and the operation of media industries. However, the study recommends that most media houses need to broadcast and publish business and political news that are more relevant, accurate and objective for most youth to consume proficiently. Keywords: News media consumption, news discourse, youth, media credibility, new and traditional media.

Hur långt är jag beredd att gå för att min text ska få läsning? : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om svensk sportjournalistik / How far am I willing to go to make sure my text gets readers? : A qualitative interview study about Swedish sports journalism

Hallin Ekesand, Samuel January 2021 (has links)
The title of the study is: How long am I prepared to go for my text to get some readers? A qualitative interview-based study about Swedish sports journalism. The aim of this study is to figure out what underlying factors which affects the journalisms news values and selection on news based on which sports that get editorial space. The paper approaches the subject with a specific viewpoint from the sport floorball, which is the largest indoor-sport in Sweden. Though it’s relative size, the sport seems to have an issue: it does not reach out. It gets a lot less coverage and media attention compared with other similar sports, such as ice hockey for example. The development of the sport has been discussed through the years, and a part of that has been an less flattering image as a hobby, not a sport. A part of the discussion has also circulated around the argument that the sport doesn´t get the media coverage it needs. Some essays have been written on the subjects on journalism and media from the point of news value although very little has been done with a combined view on sports, which is why I argue that there is a gap in the research field which this study will partly fill. This work looks at what the sports media in Sweden are focusing on in terms of coverage and what the sport floorball can do to get more coverage. Since the 2020/21 season, the Swedish newspaper SportExpressen streams every game in the top league for both women and men. The theoretical framework in this study is based on the theory of gate-keeping and the commercialization of the media industry which has been put forward by Stromback and Jonsson. The chosen method of the work is a qualitative interview study which consists of an semi-structured interview with four news editors on four Swedish news papers.  The results of the study shows that the news editors believe that floorball get as much coverage as they deserve. There are several factors that affect contemporary sports journalism. One reason is that today´s journalism is well driven by digital metrics. This development in news values and news selection seems to derive from the technological development in the profession, as well as the commercialization.

The reporting that matters : The medias’ portrayal of women as victims of conflict-related sexualviolence

Lövgren, Tuva January 2022 (has links)
This C-thesis focus on conflict-related sexual violence in media coverage before and after#Metoo. The research question of this study is ‘In what way has the media’s portrayal offemale victims of sexual violence in conflicts changed since #Metoo?’. This study furtherargues that due to the great attention of sexual violence, #Metoo and media coverage, theportrayal of women as subjects of conflict-related sexual violence will have changed in recentyears in media reporting. The content analysis finds support for the hypothesis which statesthat there has been less taboo in the reporting of conflict-related sexual violence and a morenuanced reporting in conflict-related sexual violence in recent years. This C-thesis hascontributed to the research field of conflict-related sexual violence since #Metoo is stated tobe an important variable when investigating this type of issue. The theories onconflict-related sexual violence has also been explicitly exhibited to be lacking in having onecohesive theory, which is another contribution of knowledge and a gap which futureresearchers can investigate. The study of conflict-related sexual violence is a subject that cannever be investigated enough, it is therefore vital that researchers keep expanding the field.

Proof That Voluntary Corporate Responsibility Investments Does Not Affect Financial Returns When in the News

Andersson, Alexander January 2017 (has links)
This paper presents the results of financial return analyses after 133 articles regarding social and environmental news were published in Svenska Dagbladet. During the period from 2006 to 2015 Swedish Large Cap companies were analysed after the news announcements, using the event study methodology. The study shows that abnormal returns were significant for only three events at the announcement date. A regression analysis shows that firms issuing ESG reports do not significantly have distinct returns from non-issuing firms when in the news. The study shows that firms producing consumer goods or services experienced 0.5 percent significant return differences compared to other firms in the pre-announcement period (two days). Findings also suggest that there are no significant differences between different industries when in the news regarding social and environmental aspects. An analysis of means shows no implications of differences regarding articles of: equality, employees, society or environment. This study concludes that voluntary corporate responsibility acts are not premiered when a firm is in the news regarding social or environmental events.
