The media and mental health: media familiarity with nationwide standards for reducing mental illness and suicide

Chartrand, David V. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Journalism and Mass Communications / William Adams / Mental illness and suicide present vexing challenges for journalists who seek to elevate public understanding of public health issues and remedies. Using the theoretical frameworks of media agenda setting and issue framing, content analysis was used to examine a nationwide sample of newspapers stories for evidence of media familiarity with prevailing norms for community mental health care and suicide prevention. Stories examined showed little evidence of such expertise, leaving questions about the ability of journalists — and their readers — to differentiate between standard and substandard mental health care systems. Long-term change in public policy about mental illness and suicide prevention will likely depend on the ability of special interests to capture and keep media attention as well as media management decisions to assign mental health coverage to general assignment reporters or place it in the hands of journalists with specialized training.

The media coverage of wealth and inheritance taxation in Germany

Theine, Hendrik 08 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Based on the political economy of the media perspective, this paper explores the media coverage of wealth and inheritance taxation over the early 21st century (2000 to 2018) based on a large-scale corpus of seven German daily and weekly newspapers. Germany is a useful case study, being one of the most unequal countries in the Eurozone area in terms of wealth inequality. Drawing on text mining methods and corpus linguistics, it shows that wealth and inheritance taxation is a relatively infrequent topic over the entire period, with the exception of a few intense months of increased reporting. On the occasions that the media do report on the topic of wealth and inheritance taxation, it is mainly covered in terms of a political debate. This debate centres on the politics of a possible reform process and the connected difficulties of finding compromise between different actors, rather than focussing on the potential economic impact. Furthermore, this paper explores the power of agents (both on the organisational and individual level) as the primary definers of social reality. It shows that market-liberal and conservative organisations and economists dominate the news over social-democratic and left-wing ones. Overall, the findings indicate a hostile news coverage concerning the introduction of wealth taxation and the increase of inheritance tax. / Series: Department of Economics Working Paper Series

It is considered the interface between the print platform and online journalism feature printed on the twenty-first century, and the focus is on interaction materialized based on their action via comments on the direction of the newspaper deals - what is published daily. Empirical research carried out in the newspapers dos Campos and Gazeta do Povo, gathers empirical data that make up the analysis. That is, it is a look at the offers (opinions) of players, the management and appropriations that the newspaper realizes from them. Through systematic observations have been identified elements that enable and / or determine the intensity and the way the newspaper perceives and appropriates the offers generated in the communication process from the perspective of consumption and circulation. This perspective offers a position to identify the flows and counterflow, tensions between production and reception systems. In this case, analyzing the strategies and protocols that both develop or establish to establish their exchanges and produce their speeches. The elements in the process of appropriation of the offers and considered for the analysis are the available interest channels, filters and the selection process / editing of comments and how they are again offered for consumption (reframed). The study considers the issue of new ambiences of discursive circulation while widen participation and promote new circuits that the productive system, in turn, does not account for control with traditional constituents protocols of their reading contracts. Importantly, not carried out a study on the content of news or comments, but the structure and protocols that enable the circulation of the "opinion of readers." Reflection on the subject is grounded in the theoretical contributions of gatekeeping and the theory of enunciation problematized with the specifics of journalistic practice.

Nossa hipótese prenunciada confirma que essa tensão ocorre pelas especificidades das lógicas de cada campo em cena (BOURDIEU, / This research aims to present and understand the tension triggered between the political documentary propositions of the “Movimento Sem Terra – MST” (Movement of the Landless) on communication and operation of the “Rádio Terra Livre FM” (Radio Free Earth, MF [Modulated Frequency – MF]), demonstrating, in that case, evidence of the society in media coverage. Under the methodological model of participatory research, it also offers reflections on how the MST is dealing with the challenges from the growing social media coverage, with a view to their political idealizations of communication and their appropriation by militants who engage in the practice of communication. From the triad: (a) MST’s documents of communication, (b) Radio Free Land, MF, (c) Group of communicators - we are interested in knowing the causes of this inconsistency, delay/ difference or perhaps incompatibility and lack of articulation between the political formulations of MST on communication and operation of the Radio Free Land, MF. Europeiska Unionen : En resa genom tid om hur dagspressen i två nationer framställer europeisk gemenskap

Eriksson, Jenny January 2010 (has links)
This thesis has its focus on media portrayal of a large political institution; the European Union. Articles from two nations daily newspapers have been analyzed in order to examine how the European Union is described and framed for their readers. The newspapers that was chosen for this study and from which the material was collected, were the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet the American newspaper The New York Times. The material was taken from three periods of time, and by this the results did not only serve a presentiment on how the media reports about the subject, but also an idea over the media’s coverage character over time. Also, by analyzing articles from newspapers from different countries, the material could give an answer to whether there is any difference in media reporting and coverage about the European Union over nation borders. Theories that have been under observation for this study, and which have functioned as tools for the analyzing process are: the agenda-setting theory, media ideology, framing, media logic and political communication. Further inspirations that have been under consideration and of values through the development of this thesis are thoughts from the modern theorist Jürgen Habermas, and earlier studies that have been made on the subject in matter, for example ones by Lars Palm and Vanni Tjernström. Results from this study showed that there were differences between the two nations way of reporting about the subject, and also that changes over time have occurred. Mostly, it was the Swedish news reporting that showed evident change over the three investigated periods. This can be explained by the countries over all changed relationship towards the European Union. Further did results from this study show that the American articles included more actors and subjects, compared to the Swedish articles. This can be a factor of the American articles longer character.

Cover me, I'm going public!  : “The relationship between IPO and media coverage”

Samir Sulaka, Ronni, Strand, Carl January 2018 (has links)
Background: The number of IPOs has been numerous in recent years. Moreover, the returns of the IPOs managed to either be over and underpriced. IPO-firms are generally unknown before they get listed. Therefore, the media outlets play an essential role in the dissemination of information to new investors. Thus, it becomes noteworthy to investigate whether media attention could be an explanatory factor for the first-day returns and how it affects an IPO in the short-term perspective. Research Questions: i) If the amount of media coverage two months pre-IPO has any relation with the first trading day return and ii) If the amount of media coverage helps to predict the IPOs stock return volatility after a two-month period (44 trading days)? Purpose: This research will attempt to find evidence if the amount of media coverage pre- IPO may drive the demand for the IPO and the first-day return. For this purpose, it is also necessary to find the under and/or overpricing. Furthermore, a regression analysis will be applied during a two-month period after the first trading day to investigate if increasing volatility depends on the amount of media coverage. Delimitations: The sample consists of 165 IPOs in Sweden from Aktietorget and OMX Stockholm during the period 2005-2017. IPOs are initial introductions that are not unit IPOs, mergers & acquisitions, right issues, spin-offs or buy-out firms. Method: The first research question is explained by a Pearson correlation where X is the media variable and tested against the degree of under or overpricing. Furthermore, a multiple-linear regression is examined where variables market index, Retriever data and trading volume is tested against stock return. Conclusion: It has been identified that Aktietorget has been overpriced 2005-2017 by 2.9% while OMXS has been underpriced 6.8%. In summary, the study did not manage statistically to ensure that the amount of media coverage significantly influenced the stock return volatility.

Taking into consideration that this local television news reformulates its identification strategies with viewers in order to overcome the unsatisfactory audience ratings. Concerning to understand this problem, we suppose as hypothesis that this news rebuilds its identity or identification modes with viewers / online surfers, particularly with the adoption of two main strategies: Developing ambiguous thematic organization and at the same time favoring numerically police matters in its editions and discursively being constructed as a television news turned to the "provision of services to communities"; mediated a propagation process by the presenter between his/her public and private life by appropriating of social networks as "propagator" spaces TV news identity conformers. Essentially, we work with the concepts of "society in media coverage pathways" with Fausto Neto; news media coverage with Salaverria and Aviles, Verón and Fausto Neto; Technological and cultural convergence with Jenkins and identity with Stuart Hall, Woodward, Silva and Bauman. We adopt the TV news analysis methodology developed by Itânia Gomes and we operate with two methodological concepts "television genre" and "addressing schemes". Assuming the "analytical operators" suggested by the author: mediator; communicative context; thematic organization and pacts on the role of journalism. It is created an operator named "circulation" to observe the processes of interaction between producers and Internet users in institutional profiles and anchor on Instagram and Facebook. In conclusion, JPB 1st Edition reconstructs its own identity with the materialization of a “self-reflective” speech and serious / ethical newscast, which addresses a variety of topics that interests community as a whole and adopts a fluid aesthetic, light, mediated and converging with the Web. It is distinguished from the local competitors, which are defined in the same profile - police newscasts, but JPB 1st Edition presents as a television news which has a "liquid identity", contemporary, constantly changing, adaptable to needs for which may suffer the "society in media coverage routes."
