An exploratory study investigating the construction of university students’ perceptions of menstruation and the influence menstrual product advertisements in print media

Mathews, Kulthum January 2015 (has links)
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / Menstruation is a quintessential phenomenon unique to females which prepares the body for reproductive functioning. Although this phenomenon is a natural biological process of development, social institutions such as science, socio-cultural factors, religion and the media impact young women’s perceptions of menstruation. Media, in particular advertising has been instrumental in conveying specific versions of reality that mirrors Western capitalist and patriarchal ideologies of women and their bodily processes. Media representations of menstruation portrays it as a ‘hygiene crisis’, rational and in need of symptomatic treatment. Media portrayal of women’s bodies highlights the importance of identifying ways in which advertising contributes to young women’s perceptions of menstruation. The aims of this study are twofold; firstly this study aims to understand how young women’s perceptions of menstruation are constructed. Secondly, this study also aims to explore young women’s perceptions of menstrual product advertising in print media. Literature shows that the media often portrays menstruation as a ‘hygiene crisis’ instead of a maturation process. Improved hygiene seems to be the rationale and modern answer of ‘treating’ symptoms. Literature also identifies advertising as a pervasive form of media, which is often unconsciously acknowledged, and it is thought to convey specific versions of reality in order to mirror Western capitalist and patriarchal ideology. Taking these factors into consideration shows the importance of identifying ways in which advertising contributes to young women’s perceptions of menstruation. Positioned within a social constructionist framework, specifically on macro social constructionism the emphasis is on unpacking power relations and how this exercises social control over women. The use of social constructionism strengthens the study with focusing on the importance of how perceptions are constructed through interactions with our environments. This study utilized a qualitative approach using focus groups as the data collection method. The sample comprised of 16 participants recruited from the female population aged 18-23 years from a University in the Western Cape. Foucauldian discourse analysis was employed to analyse the data collected. All ethical requirements as stipulated by the University were strictly adhered to. This study will therefore contribute to the dearth of literature in the South African context as literature in this area is very limited and inaccessible. This study in particular contributes to the South African body of knowledge by furthering the understanding of how societal messaging influences and perpetuates power relations and the social control of women.

Bech, Cornelia January 2018 (has links)

Karlsson, Jenny, Norberg, Sarah January 2020 (has links)

Ahlström, Johan, Spring, Johanna January 2023 (has links)
Purpose and research question: The purpose with the study was to investigate male coaches’ knowledge about menstruations impact on training. Also, to investigate the communication between coach and athlete about menstruation. The authors used three main questions  What kind of knowledge about menstruations impact on training has male coaches? How are their experience about the communication about menstruation with their  athletes? What kind of knowledge do they need about menstruation and the impact on training.  Method: The authors used a qualitative method where they interviewed six different male coaches. Three coaches from TeamGym and three from cross-country skiing. All material has then been processed through a thematic content analysis. Results: The purpose and questions were answered, and the results was divided into three main questions which were then took down into subcategories. Under the first question, what kind of knowledge the trainers have, it is summarized that the trainers themselves felt that they had a certain knowledge but also that they need continued education about menstruation. Many of the trainers described their knowledge of menstruation linked to energy balance and training load. The coaches also described how they used their knowledge in different situations. To summarize the question about communication with athletes, was that there seems to be a certain taboo. The coaches reflect that the most important factor for breaking taboos seems to lie in the trust between coaches and athletes, coach-athlete relationship. The coaches also want to respect the athlete's integrity. The summary for the last main question, which was, what knowledge do the trainers need more of in further work with menstruations impact on training, they themselves described that they need more practically applicable research, a more open discussion climate and time for continuing education.  Conclusion: The conclusion was that more knowledge is needed about menstruations impact on training and more of the general knowledge about menstruation. More education is required and that the trainers must actively work with the subject. Around the communication with athletes, the coaches need time to get to know their athletes and build a trust that must then be maintained and nurtured from both the athlete's and the coach's side. A strong coach- athlete relationship. The coaches also need further education to increase their knowledge in order to feel comfortable and to be able to answer the questions that may arise about menstruations impact on training.

The Acceptance and Usage Intention of Menstrual Underwear

Phan, Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
This research aims to study the consumer perception, acceptance and adoption of menstrual underwear as it provides a sustainable option to the current feminine hygiene management solutions widely used in the consumer market in the U.S. In addition to the functional and utilitarian aspect of the underwear, I further delve into studying the social psychological effect the usage of the underwear (i.e., hedonic) has on consumer adoption. A longitudinal, qualitative study employing a three-step approach was conducted. The findings suggest that participants have never heard of menstrual underwear and did not fully understand the phenomenon. Contradicting responses between subject's attitudes and behavior towards the environment were revealed although, menstrual underwear had a positive psychological effect on the participants. Overall, menstrual underwear was most accepted amongst participants in the study.

Will I be able to perform during my menstruation?” : A qualitative interview study about stressors and coping strategies associated with menstruation which elite female soccer players experience and use in conjunction with training and competition

Gunnarsson, Evelina January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine which stressors and coping strategies associated with menstruation elite female soccer players experience and use in conjunction with training and competition. A total of fifteen women participated in the study, of which all were between 19-31 years old (M = 23.9, SD = 3.15). All participants played soccer in either OBOS Damallsvenskan or Elitettan during the data collection. A semi-structured interview guide was used which was based on the transactional model of stress and coping (Lazarus &amp; Folkman, 1984). The results revealed that both physical and psychological symptoms during menstruation was perceived as stressful by the soccer players. The stressors that the players experienced were (1) the head coach’s lack of knowledge and understanding of menstruation, (2) worry about performance being affected by physical symptoms during training and competition, and (3) worry about leaking during competition. When the players experienced that they could not control the situation they used problem focused coping. When these coping strategies did not work, or when they experienced that they could not control the situation, they used emotion focused coping. The players also used dysfunctional coping which has not occurred in previous studies in the research area.

Girls' equal participation in education. Period. : A field study on how Indian schoolgirls perceive menstruation stigmas to affect their access to education

Schylander, Hedvig January 2017 (has links)
Menstruation stigmas and a lack of facilities to manage periods have been identified as possible hinders for girls’ equal access to education all over of the world. This paper focuses on investigating how menstruation stigmas generate obstacles for girls’ equal access to, and participation in, education. Its aim is to investigate how girls in an Indian context perceive menstruation stigmas to affect them, particularly when it comes to school attendance and ability to learn in school. This is done by conducting group wise individual respondent interviews with female students from a school deemed to be less likely to subject its students to strong restricting stigmas and norms. An informant interview with the school principal, a text analysis of the school’s biology text book and respondent interviews with teachers were used as additional material for the study. The girls at the analysed school were found to perceive their capabilities to participate in education to be affected by menstruation stigmas and norms. Because these results were found in a less stigmatising environment, the paper suggests that students subjected to even more social pressure might be even more affected by menstruation stigmas. Recommendations are thus for development research and practice to break taboos and lessen the stigmas that surround menstruation.

Psychological aspects of the premenstrual syndrome

Rose, Cynthia Beulah 12 1900 (has links)
The aim of the study was to assess specific psychological aspects of the premenstrual syndrome, such as stress, attitudes towards menstruation, and past history of psychosomatic illnesses. Thirteen PMS subjects, were compared with 8 control subjects, who reported only minimal or no premenstrual symptoms. In comparison to controls, PMS subjects regarded menstruation as significantly more debilitating. No significant differences were found between the groups in levels of stress. However, the PMS group evidenced a significantly greater tendency to react to emotional stress, with overcontrol, i.e. the need to control and suppress emotions. In addition, the PMS group evidenced a significantly greater history of psychosomatic illnesses, than controls. Finally, there was a significant group reduction in symptom severity, within the PMS group, over the two month period of daily monitoring of symptoms. The results of this study suggest that certain psychological factors may be implicated in premenstrual symptom severity. / Psychology / M.A. (Social Science (Psychology))
