"Whose culture has capital?": Chinese skilled migrant mothers raising their children in New Zealand

Wu, Bin January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with a group of Chinese skilled migrant mothers’ experiences in relation to their children’s early childhood care and education in New Zealand. Utilising Bourdieu’s concept of capital, habitus and field, the current research addresses the complexity and ambiguity of the Chinese migrant mothers' lives whose social position transcends multiple fields. Because their children attend mainstream education, and the local educational system is different from those where the migrant mothers were brought up, the migrant mothers had to transcend different cultural fields. Chinese skilled migrants, who were middle class professionals in their native country, usually experienced social and financial downturns in New Zealand. Although skilled, the migrant mothers encountered difficulties in finding paid employment that matched their pre-migration job status. These mothers were more likely to give up paid work or reduce paid working hours on the birth of their children than were their male partners. The current study focuses on these transcendent experiences, encompassing both embeddedness and ambiguity across different fields by examining the interplay of class, gender, and ethnicity in the daily lives of these mothers. Traditional interpretations of cultural capital usually refer only to dominant social and cultural capital, whereas the current thesis expands the concept to include both dominant and non-dominant forms of social and cultural capital. The findings showed that the migrant mothers redefined and reconstructed the concept of capital. The migrant mothers’ attitude towards mainstream education was ambiguous and complex: covering the full spectrum from willing embracing, reluctantly following, selectively utilising to firmly rejecting. Simultaneously, the mothers promoted, criticised, and rejected various traditional Chinese practices and beliefs in order to maximise benefits for their children.

Place and status of foreign languages in the French public libraries : a case for information sciences

Lhuillier, Laurence Marion 14 September 2012 (has links)
Initiated and informed by years of professional experience dedicated to providing foreign language resources in a French public library, this research questions the positioning of the library as an institution anchored in the principle of equal access to public service, in the context of a decline in both attendance and enrolment as well as that of increased international migration and multilingualism. The argument focuses on the transformation of practice and professional representation generated by the introduction of foreign language material in France's municipal libraries and questions the notions of “general public,” “information,” and “institutional positioning.” A quantitative survey assesses the size of the phenomenon. The qualitative survey analyses observations collected during face-to-face interviews with professionals, with non-library users as well as with elected representatives responsible for overseeing public libraries. Results reveal a real, albeit limited evolution: while numerous libraries now provide resources in foreign languages, such offers remain small in terms of both volume and value. They also highlight a lack of understanding of the nature and expectations of target audiences, the disruption of professional practice and representation generated by the acknowledgment of language as one of the criteria to shape the offer of resources, the transformation of the positioning of public librarians, of audiences and, more generally, of an institution not yet substantially involved in the field of foreign languages. In conclusion, the results show that this question goes beyond the sole decision-making power of public libraries themselves and falls more broadly in the remit of territorial and national authorities. Whether the development of foreign language resources in French public libraries is merely a passing shadow or, on the contrary, a significant evolution remains to be determined.

[en] A THEOLOGY OF FRONTIER: THE SOCIETY OF JESUS MISSION TOWARDS MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES / [pt] UMA TEOLOGIA DE FRONTEIRA: A MISSÃO DA COMPANHIA DE JESUS JUNTO AOS MIGRANTES E REFUGIADOS

MARIA DE LOURDES DA F F NORBERTO 06 August 2018 (has links)
[en] In A theology of frontier: the Society of Jesus mission towards migrants and refugees, we intend to discuss how the Jesuit concept of frontiers of mission evolved over time and how the Society of Jesus understands it nowadays. First, we studied the history of its General Congregations since Vatican II. Then, we analyzed how Pope Francis s vision of mission, as a Jesuit, influences his ecclesiology. From this point on, we established a parallel between the pope’s missionary choices and those of the Society of Jesus. Due to the urgency of the matter, we focused our analysis only on the work of Jesuits with migrants and refugees, their most dramatic frontier. Pope Francis brought the issue of migrants and refugees to the center of the Church concerns and the Society of Jesus has put special emphasis on their actions with this frontier through the work of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), founded by Father Pedro Arrupe in 1980. For the pope, there is no such thing as a refugee crisis. Actually, according to him, the world is facing a solidarity crisis when men and women refuse to open their doors to their brothers in need. That is why he urges all of us to welcome, protect, promote, and integrate those in need and by doing this replace the globalization of indifference and the politics of rejection and fear by the culture of encounter. Similarly, today, the Society of Jesus understands his mission in this frontier, by means of the work of the JRS, as an offer of hope for those who have been abandoned by all, as an answer to Jesus Christ words I was a stranger and you welcomed me (Mt 25, 35). As a conclusion, we look at the path we have covered in this work from a theological perspective as we try to answer God s question in Genesis 4, 9, Where is your brother?

Miftah, Amal 01 March 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to explain the reasons for making remittances. The second issue is to measure their impact on the household's well-being, as evaluated by the monetary and human poverty. We conclude that these flows reduce the number of poor and vulnerable households. They also can have fuelled a rise in income inequality compared to the counterfactual situation of no migration. Our results also indicate that remittances have a positive influence on parents' willingness to continue the schooling of their children especially if they are male. The third objective of this thesis is related to the return migration. We show the role of socio-demographics and economics factors in taking the decision to return

Aspects of migrants' theology of God and of human beings: a missiological exploration of some responses to the xenophobic violence in and around Tshwane, May 2008

Ng'ang'a, Susan Wanjiru 06 1900 (has links)
When violence towards fellow humans deteriorates to the extent of setting fire on others, it becomes a matter of grievous concern and a subject of empirical research. This study therefore inquires into xenophobic violence in South Africa of 2008 and tries to understand the victims‟ plight in the light of their conception of the image of God. To achieve this, a questionnaire survey among migrant victims from other African countries was conducted, analysed and critiqued. The findings established a deep feeling of animosity from a section of a South Africans with consequent loss of property, physical harm and death, as well as emotional trauma. The study deduces that such hostile treatment by hosts results from a loss of African humanity, Ubuntu. Going forward a theology of the image of God is critical for human relations in South Africa and essential for reconciliation between migrants and locals. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. The population totals 800 students enrolled in grades (years) in primary education II (6th to 9th grade ) and high school (1st to 3rd year). Data were obtained with the application of a test of verbal intelligence test (reasoning) and the collections on age, sex , year ( range ) and the origin of the students information gazetted or non- gazetted and migrant or non- migrant, noted in the tab. The result achieved by each student in the reasoning test was associated with student performance on assessments of English language, mathematics and overall average (mean final of students in all courses taken in the year 2012) The result of the data analysis performed in software application SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows version 20.0 pointed to statically significant difference between gazetted and non- gazetted students. The initial hypothesis that migrant students could have difficulty learning because of the changing process was not confirmed by analysis of the search results. It found a similarity between the performance of students in the reasoning test and performance in internal assessments practiced by students of CMF. As regards the results by age, there was a confluence with Piaget's theory because the results showed performance improvement as age advances. The finding points to the importance of faculty and teaching staff perform their methodological and pedagogical - didactic actions with emphasis on the development of reasoning that proved they were not well developed and that students should pay attention to non- gazetted whose performance showed differences statically significant in relation to the gazetted students.

We are here, but are we queer? : A bricolage of the experiences of LGBTQ refugees in Linköping, Sweden

Bogaers, Sacha January 2018 (has links)
In recent years, the field of queer asylum studies has slowly been expanding in different contexts across the world, with numerous methodologies and various topics of focus. In Sweden, the academic work in this area has mainly focused on legal perspectives. Providing a different perspective, this thesis examines the situation and experiences of LGBTQ asylum seekers and refugees in Linköping, Sweden through a community-based collage project. It examines how collages can be used as a method for research and a tool for community building within this context, and explores the experiences of LGBTQ asylum seekers and refugees in Linköping, Sweden, using individual and group collages. Using the concept of bricolage, the thesis ties together various artworks with short narratives and analytical interpretations. Together, they form a fragmented, in itself collage-like insight into this community. Through these fragments, the thesis reflects on the themes of migration, belonging, survival, and identity. Additionally, it explores questions of home, family, refugeeness, mess, homonormativity and representation. I argue that commonly used narratives of migration often do not fit this group, as they face highly complex forms of oppression based on their intersecting identities. Furthermore, the thesis examines the use of collage as a method by looking into the ways collage can negotiate methodological issues like accessibility and researcher accountability, how it can function as a tool for community building, and how it can be used to allow a community researcher to negotiate their positionality in an easier way. I argue that the use of collage has many benefits and that the use of the collage method in this thesis has enriched the research.

Women's Testimonios of Life and Migration in el Cruce

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: This study was done in collaboration with the Kino Border Initiative. The Kino Border Initiative is a Catholic, bi-national organization run by Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist, Jesuit priests and lay people. The organization is dedicated to providing services to recently deported migrants and migrants-in-transit through their soup kitchen, women's shelter and first aid station in Nogales, Sonora. Based on their experiences in the women's shelter, the Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist and researcher sought out to further understand migrant women's experiences of gender-based violence prior to migration. Using data collected by the Sisters, it was decided to use an analysis rooted in testimonio, and, in this way, use the women's words as a foundational basis for understanding the migration of women. The analysis is based on 62 testimonies related to women's histories of violence and their migration experiences, and the information from 74 intake questionnaires that were all analyzed retroactively. The analysis of data and testimonios has led to the realization that violence suffered by migrant women is not limited to the journey itself, and that 71% of women report having suffered some sort of violence either prior to or during migration. Often times, the first experiences of violence originated in their homes when they were children and continue to repeat itself throughout their lifetimes in varied forms. Their stories reveal how the decision to migrate is a consequence to the transnational and structural violence that pushes women to seek out ways to survive and provide for their families. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Social Justice and Human Rights 2013
