Setting Up Shop in the Digital Bazaar – Bangladeshi Blue-Collar Service-Providers’ Adoption of a Business Aggregator

Shahid, Shantana January 2020 (has links)
This essay explores the early experiences of Bangladeshi blue-collar service workers in digitalising their livelihoods. It is a qualitative study that surveys and interviews service-providers in Dhaka who use the business aggregator platform Sheba.xyz, an online service marketplace, and seeks to understand what brought these self-employed micro-entrepreneurs, previously outside the digital economy, to adopt an ICT-enabled solution. The study is guided by Diffusion of Innovations (DOI) theory, one of the historically dominant paradigms in the field of communication for development (C4D). The overarching research question is, “Why did blue-collar service-providers in Dhaka adopt and use a digital business aggregator platform?” The aim is to explore what motivated/discouraged and enabled/hindered innovation adoption among a group of users previously marginalised from digital and financial inclusion. The findings suggest that adoption of Sheba.xyz among service-providers was not driven so much by a desire to digitalise one’s business per se, and as a means of mitigating a previous inability to do so. Rather, the factors that emerge from the qualitative data are other perceived relative advantages of the solution – of increase in customers, income, and opportunity. Survey respondents and interviewees also displayed strong affiliation with, and trust in, the platform provider; an alertness for fair treatment; and a drive to prosper, suggesting that they embraced a comprehensive concept and altered life situation where belonging, respect, and self-fulfilment matters, rather than narrowly adopted a new mobile application.

Approche info-communicationnelle des opérations de réhabilitation de l'habitat : de la compréhension des interactions acteurs/habitat à l'amélioration des stratégies d'intervention / Information-communication approach to habitat rehabilitation operations : from understanding stakeholder/habitat interactions to improving intervention strategies

Quentin, Maxime 12 December 2016 (has links)
The sustainable development and the energetic transition as well are main concerns in Europe. The construction sector is a fundamental driver of the reduction of the carbon footprint. Furthermore, most of the current practices does not take enough into account neither the occupants’ needs nor their behavior regarding the energetic performance. Grounded on the information-communication framework, this research focuses on the definition of the interactions between the actor and its habitat to lead the strategies of rehabilitation. In line with the semantico-actional paradigm, we provide evidence that a comprehensive approach enables the analysis of the process by which the users apprehend and appropriate a living space perceived as comfortable. Practically, it ensues from this analysis a better definition of the users’ needs and a guideline for the construction stakeholders to collect information about users’ expectations so as to satisfy them. In a sake of functionality economics concerning the thermal comfort, the purpose of this interdisciplinary investigation is twofold: First, the understanding of the users’ sense-making about the environment of the habitat. Second, the definition and the implementation of operating behavioral metrics in the technical optimization of the habitat. Referring to the method of listening to the needs and hierarchy of needs, developed by the DEVISU research center of the University of Valenciennes (France), we interpret the perceived comfort according to the main users’ profile in order to integrate it in the technical processes of rehabilitation.

Three Research Essays on Online Users' Concerns and Web Assurance Mechanisms

Mousavizadeh Kashipaz, Seyed Mohammadreza 08 1900 (has links)
Online users struggle with different concerns whenever they use information systems. According to Miyazaki and Fernandez (2001), there are three important categories of concerns for online users: privacy concern, third party fraudulent behavior concern ("system security"), and online website fraudulent behavior concern ("security"). Kim, Sivasailam, and Rao (2004) proposed a similar categorization for web assurance dimensions. They argue that online websites are supposed to address users' privacy, security, and business integrity concerns to decrease user concerns. Although several researchers tried to answer how different factors affect these concerns and how these concerns affect users' behavior, there are so many ambiguities and contradictions in this area. This Essay I in this work develops a comprehensive map of the role of online privacy concern to identify related factors and categorize them through an in-depth literature review and conducting meta-analysis on online privacy concern. Although users have concerns about their privacy and security, there is still growth in the number of internet users and electronic commerce market share. One possible reason is that websites are applying assurance mechanisms to ensure the privacy of their users. Therefore, it could be an interesting research topic to investigate how privacy assurance mechanisms affect users concern and, consequently, their behavior in different concerns such as e-commerce and social networking sites. Different types of web assurance mechanisms are used by websites. The most prevalent among these assurance mechanisms include web assurance seals and assurance statements and privacy customization features. Essay II and III aims to address how these mechanisms influence e-commerce and social networking sites users' behavior. Essay II applies the procedural fairness theory by Lind and Tyler (1988) to explain how and why the web assurance mechanisms affect consumers' perceived risks. Essay III addresses the issue of self-disclosure on social networking sites. Applying protection motivation theory, this study aims to evaluate the effect of web assurance mechanisms on online privacy concern and self-disclosure behavior on the social networking sites.

Can functions from cryptocurrencies improve the Riksbank’s proposed E-krona?

Nilsson, Viktor, Guregård, Oscar January 2021 (has links)
Title: Can functions from cryptocurrencies improve the Riksbank’s proposed E-krona? Authors: Oscar Guregård and Viktor Nilsson Supervisor: Mikael Knutsson Background: As digitalisation develops, the use of physical banknotes and cash decreases. The Riksbank is responding to this by exploring the possibility of issuing digital cash, the E-krona. As this is uncharted territory for the Riksbank and the project is still in development, there are challenges with the proposed functions that the E-krona is expected exhibit. Research in the development of Central Bank Digital Currencies, CBDC, suggests that cryptocurrencies, an alternative to centralized payment structures, have a variety of functions that may be well suited for CBDC’s. The study aims to analyze various features and functions of the cryptocurrencies Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple in order to determine whether they can improve the proposed E-krona or not. Purpose/object: The aim of the study is to identify weaknesses and problem areas in the current proposal for a technical solution for the E-krona based on the goals and objectives presented by the Riksbank, and to then analyze whether functions from cryptocurrencies can remedy these. If a function from a cryptocurrency can solve a problem with the E-krona, the study must examine in what way the function meets the Riksbank’s objectives to a greater degree than the current proposed solution. Methodology: A qualitative methodology has been used to gather previously researched data on the phenomenon CBDC and the Riksbank’s own reports on the aspects of the E-krona in order to find problem areas through interviews with critics of the project. These problem areas have been analyzed along with functions from Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple to determine whether the cryptocurrencies’ functions are better suited to meet the E-krona’s goals than the Riksbank’s own proposals. Results: The study finds that the E-krona’s biggest problem areas are based on excessive complexity. The cryptocurrencies that have been examined and their functions will probably contribute to even greater complexity in the functions of the E-krona instead of creating simpler solutions, something that the critics value.

Fog Computing based traffic Safety for Connected Vulnerable Road Users / Assurer la sécurité des usagers vulnérables de la route connectés grâce à leur Smartphones et au concept de Fog Computing

Jalew, Esubalew Alemneh 25 October 2019 (has links)
Annually, millions of people die and many more sustain non-fatal injuries because of road traffic crashes. Despite multitude of countermeasures, the number of causalities and disabilities owing to traffic accidents are increasing each year causing grinding social, economic, and health problems. Due to their high volume and lack of protective-shells, more than half of road traffic deaths are imputed to vulnerable road users (VRUs): pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Mobile devices combined with fog computing can provide feasible solutions to protect VRUs by predicting collusions and warning users of an imminent traffic accident. Mobile devices’ ubiquity and high computational capabilities make the devices an important components of traffic safety solutions. Fog computing has features that suits to traffic safety applications as it is an extension of cloud computing that brings down computing, storage, and network services to the proximity of end user. Therefore, in this thesis, we have proposed an infrastructure-less traffic safety architecture that depends on fog computing and mobile devices possessed by VRUs and drivers. The main duties of mobile devices are extracting their positions and other related data and sending cooperative awareness message to a nearby fog server using wireless connection. The fog server estimates collision using a collision prediction algorithm and sends an alert message, if an about-to-occur collision is predicted. Evaluation results shows that the proposed architecture is able to render alerts in real time. Moreover, analytical and performance evaluations depict that the architecture outperforms other related road safety architectures in terms of reliability, scalability and latency. However, before deploying the architecture, challenges pertaining to weaknesses of important ingredients of the architecture should be treated prudently. Position read by mobile devices are not accurate and do not meet maximum position sampling rates traffic safety applications demand. Moreover, continuous and high rate position sampling drains mobile devices battery quickly. From fog computing’s point of view, it confronts new privacy and security challenges in addition to those assumed from cloud computing. For aforementioned challenges, we have proposed new solutions: (i) In order to improve GPS accuracy, we have proposed an efficient and effective two-stage map matching algorithm. In the first stage, GPS readings obtained from smartphones are passed through Kalman filter to smooth outlier readings. In the second stage, the smoothed positions are mapped to road segments using online time warping algorithm. (ii) position sampling frequency requirement is fulfilled by an energy efficient location prediction system that fuses GPS and inertial sensors’ data. (iii) For energy efficiency, we proposed an energy efficient fuzzy logic-based adaptive beaconing rate management that ensures safety of VRUs. (iv) finally, privacy and security issues are addressed indirectly using trust management system. The two-way subjective logic-based trust management system enables fog clients to evaluate the trust level of fog servers before awarding the service and allows the servers to check out the trustworthiness of the service demanders. Engaging omnipresent mobile device and QoS-aware fog computing paradigm in active traffic safety applications has the potential to reduce overwhelming number of traffic accidents on VRUs.

Promoción de los derechos en salud en Perú: una aproximación desde la perspectiva de acción de la Superintendencia Nacional de Salud / Promotion of health rights in Peru: an approach from the perspective of The Peruvian National Health Authority

Mezones-Holguín, Edward, Díaz-Romero, Ricardo, Castillo-Jayme, Jackeline, Jerí-de-Pinho, María, Benítes-Zapata, Vicente A., Marquez-Bobadilla, Edith, López-Dávalos, César, Philipps-Cuba, Flor de María 09 1900 (has links)
In Peru, The National Health Authority (SUSALUD) is granted the responsibility to promote, protect and defend the health rights of every citizen. However, in the Peruvian Health System (PHS) there exists an insufficient culture of health rights, a low level of knowledge of health rights by the population, and a limited degree of cooperation between users, providers and funders. In light of this limited popular participation in the health rights of the citizenry, it has been necessary for SUSALUD to pursue various activities in order to promote the exercise of health rights by Peruvians. Among the strategies implemented are the development of Organized Boards of Users (OBU) and a Program of Integrated Actions for the Promotion of Health Rights (PIAPHI). The aim of both interventions is to increase the level of trust between citizens and government, which fosters and strengthens the capacity of citizens to pursue their health rights. In this article we begin with a brief presentation on the state of knowledge, attitudes and practices of users of the health system regarding their rights. Then we explain both programs, their goals and procedures, and a general description of their activities. Also, some indicators of process and some results are presented along with discussion and future prospects. We believe that the gradual implementation of the OBU and PIAPHI programs will enhance the participation of Peruvians in their health system, and will contribute positively to their empowerment and the pursuit of their health rights. / In Peru, The National Health Authority (SUSALUD) is granted the responsibility to promote, protect and defend the health rights of every citizen.
