As casas de Oscar Niemeyer - 1935-1955

Almeida, Marcos Leite January 2005 (has links)

Although there are several researches on Niemeyer’s works, few have looked carefully into the geometric procedures for defining curvilinear and free forms. The analysis procedures of this study were: the two-dimensional redrawing of the projects, the parametric modeling, the interchange of parameters, the three-dimensional geometric modeling, a geometric analysis, and the digital fabrication. This research aimed to evaluate, three-dimensionally, the selected building’s curvilinear geometry, through digital visualization and physical prototyping. The goal was to portray the process for defining curvilinear forms, and to demonstrate the compositional principles that offer unity to the two architectural complexes. This research contributed to the comprehension of Niemeyer’s work, through the use of different digital technologies. The produced prototypes allowed the investigation and analysis of the architectural spaces designed by Niemeyer, and the interpretation of its geometry.

A Study of Art and Aestheticism in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray

Siméus, Jenny January 2004 (has links)
My twofold aim with this essay is, firstly, to examine the ideas about art expressed in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by the Victorian author Oscar Wilde. Secondly, I analyse how Oscar Wilde has implemented the philosophy of aestheticism throughout his novel. I achieve this by discussing the novel from the perspectives of the arts of painting, acting and literature. I examine the ideas expressed through the three main characters Dorian Gray, Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton. I give occurrences of alliteration, epigrams and theatrical traits of the novel as examples of how the novel in itself is a beautiful work of art. With this essay I wish to highlight the need for all types of art mentioned in The Picture of Dorian Gray to be included in any discussion about art in the novel. My thesis statement is that the philosophy of aestheticism is promoted throughout the novel. This philosophy states that art should only be seen as something beautiful. Art should not be expected to teach its audience any moral lessons. The over-all conclusion is that it is indeed the philosophy of aestheticism that is promoted in The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the ideal of male beauty in particular.

Taking Issue with History: Empathy and the Ethical Imperatives of Creative Interventions

Vera, Monica A 01 January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to contribute to a dialogue that considers the relationship between history, literature, and empathy as a literary affect. Specifically, I explored sites of literature’s transformative potential as it relates to cultural studies and the ethics of deconstruction. Via a deconstructive, post-colonial reading of Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, I considered how subjects in our current socio-political moment can feel history. Emerging from a post-structurally mediated engagement with history, signification, and feeling, I argued that empathy, as it is contentiously presented in the context of deconstruction, is not necessarily a reductive or essentialist approach towards relating or “being-with” an-other. Instead, I proposed that the act of reading historiographical novels that take constructions of the Atlantic Slave Trade to task might generate an affective empathy, which could in turn engender a more empathetic relationality and way of being-in-the-world.

Epicurean aestheticism: De Quincey, Pater, Wilde, Stoppard

Emilsson, Wilhelm 11 1900 (has links)
This is a study of what I argue is a neglected side of Aestheticism. A standard definition of Aestheticism is that its practitioners turn away from the general current of modernity to protest its utilitarian and materialistic values, but this generalization ignores the profound influence of contemporary philosophical and scientific thought on such major figures of British Aestheticism as Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde. This study focuses on Aesthetes who are not in flight from modernity. I call their type of Aestheticism "Epicurean Aestheticism" and argue that since this temperament is characterized by a willingness to engage with the flux of modern times it must be distinguished from the more familiar, escapist form of Aestheticism I call "Platonic Aestheticism." I propose that Aestheticism be viewed as a spectrum with Epicurean Aestheticism on one side and the Platonic variety on the other. While Platonic Aesthetes like W. B . Yeats and Stephane Mallarme continue the Romantic project of trying to counter modernity with various idealist and absolutist philosophies, Epicurean Aesthetes adopt materialist and relativistic strategies in their desire to make the most of modern life. I argue that the first unmistakable signs of Epicurean Aestheticism are to be found in Thomas De Quincey, that the sensibility is fully formulated be Pater, continued by Wilde, and finds a current representative in Tom Stoppard. All Aesthetes are dedicated to the pursuit of beauty, but Platonic Aesthetes seek beauty in an eternal and transcendent realm, while Epicurean Aesthetes have given up such absolutist habits of thought. Pater writes: "Modern thought is distinguished from ancient by its cultivation of the "relative" spirit in place of the "absolute." Epicurean Aesthetes want a new aesthetic that will parallel the paradigm shift from absolutism to relativism. While a nostalgic, quasi-religious longing for a purely ideal realm characterizes Platonic Aesthetes, Epicurean Aesthetes accept that the high, idealistic road to eternal beauty is closed. Instead of lamenting this fact, they start looking for beauty among the uncertainties of the phenomenal world: by viewing life as an aesthetic spectacle to be observed and experimented on with playful detachment they become Epicureans of the flux of modernity. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

LA CERÁMICA ARQUITECTÓNICA EN LA OBRA DE OSCAR NIEMEYER: COLOR, MORFOLOGÍA E INTENCIONES

Torre Fornés, Irene de la 06 November 2017 (has links)
Architectural ceramics have been a legitimizing resource for the inaugural discourse of the Modern Movement architecture in Brazil. Understood as an element that connects with the tradition of that country, and therefore fully identifiable with it, architectural ceramics have been reinterpreted to assume a prominent, sometimes decisive, role in shaping the most important works of this movement. Oscar Niemeyer, a key architect in the recent history of Brazil, has used ceramic tiles throughout his career with different purposes that are linked both to the artistic context around him and to his own personal interests. The present research aims to rescue and to highlight the role that architectural ceramics play in his work as a compositional resource that provides it with significant values and cultural references. The present study has focused on those among the most emblematic Niemeyer buildings in which the use of tiles is more apparent. Analyses are made under an eminently visual perspective, discussing the chromatic, morphological and symbolic characteristics of the ceramic pieces contained in every building, often in relation to the work of the renowned artists who designed them. Also, the contextualization of these works -both architectural and ceramic- has allowed to check the evolution of the intentions and characteristics of the ceramic material in parallel with the professional trajectory of Niemeyer. All this previous inquiry has brought us to formulate a series of conclusions about the (sometimes interwoven) motivations that led the architect to the conscious use of the ceramic material in his creations throughout each stage of his life. Those motivations range from the visual dematerialization of the surfaces to the artistic interests of Niemeyer himself through the allusion to the Brazilian tradition understood as vindication and signification. To sum up, architectural ceramics have played an unquestionable role in some of the most important works of Oscar Niemeyer and have provided constructive, aesthetic and cultural values to them, contributing (sometimes discreetly, other times with unavoidable presence) to the originality of his architecture.

Bylund, Jakob January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis I will describe the process of working with a piano trio. The trio consisted of Jonny Ek on piano, Uno Dvärby on bass and, me, Jakob Bylund on drums. This process included choosing musicians, studying influences, rehearsing, and the selecting and arranging songs.  I will also reflect on my role as the drummer and band leader of the trio. The main purpose was to investigate what happens to a trio that does not only rehearse often, but also puts in a lot of work in to studying their role models, such as Oscar Peterson trio and Ahmad Jamal trio, by listening and transcribing arrangements played by them.  By using these methods, the trio hoped to achieve a greater understanding of what these references were actually playing, and using that knowledge to develop its own interplay, dynamics and sound.  The impact of role models is analyzed by comparing the Oscar Peterson trio and Ahmad Jamal trio to each other, and to my own trio, finding the uniqueness of each group as well as the similarities between them.  During this project I have learned a lot as a drummer, arranger and band leader. Because of our many rehearsals and the way we studied our role models, I have gained a deeper understanding of my tendencies when drumming. I’ve also learned that the drummer in a piano trio could determine the direction of the music with very subtle but efficient ways, and therefore has a lot of power and responsibility to take care of the music.  As a result of using these methods the trio managed to get a deeper understanding of why its role models sounded like they did and use that information to develop in their footprints. / <p>Jonny Ek - Piano.</p><p>Uno Dvärby - Kontrabas.</p><p>Jakob Bylund - Trummor.</p><p></p><p>"Where Or When" - Richard Rodgers</p><p>"Long Ago And Far Away" - Jerome Kern</p><p>"Black And Tan Fantasy" - Duke Ellington</p><p>"I Was Doing All Right" - George Gershwin</p><p>"In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" - David Mann</p><p>"Avalon" - Al Jolson, Buddy DeSylva, Vincent Rose</p><p>"Con Alma" - Dizzy Gillespie</p><p>"It's Only A Paper Moon" - Harold Arlen</p><p>"Easy Living" - Ralph Rainger</p>

Arthur Breisky a Oscar Wilde: kritika, maska, mystifikace / Arthur Breisky and Oscar Wilde: Criticism, Mask, Mystification

Bláhová, Šárka January 2017 (has links)
The thesis is devoted to the following two representatives of literal decadence, Oscar Wilde, British dramatist, prose writer, poet and essayist, and Arthur Breisky, Czech prose writer, literary critic and translator. The thesis opens with providing a basic insight into the life and work of both authors. They were both influenced by decadence, which was not only an artistic trend, but also a specific spirit of the time that was reflected in the psychological and social roots and opinions of both authors. The thesis works with the basic assumption that the Czech decadent Breisky was significantly influenced by Wilde in his opinions and activities. The thesis sets up three areas to explore that mingle and influence each other: criticism, masque and mystification. The main similarities between Wilde and Breisky are analyzed in the thesis. Based on the comparison of individual motives, it is possible to trace how Breisky builds on Wilde's ideas and what, on the other hand, he invents newly or differently. Apart from the comparison of both authors, the thesis also provides a comprehensive overview of Breisky's opinions on literature and art at the theoretical level. Key words: Arthur Breisky, Oscar Wilde, decadence, critique, art, masque, mystification, dandysm
