Irlandés in the Americas: Irish Themes and Affinities in Contemporary Spanish American Narrative

Cunniffe Peña, Kathleen January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation examines Irish characters, themes and literary affinities in modern and contemporary Spanish American literature (1944-2011), focusing on novels and short stories by eight authors: El otro Joyce by Roberto Ferro, “Dublín al sur” by Isidoro Blaisten, El sueño del celta by Mario Vargas Llosa, selections from Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges, Entre gringos y criollos and Quema su memoria by Eduardo Cormick, selected stories by Viviana O’Connell, La importancia de llamarse Daniel Santos by Luis Rafael Sánchez, and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz. As the above list of authors suggests, Irish themes, characters, and intertextualities are present throughout the region’s Spanish-language literature, from some of its most celebrated writers like Borges and Vargas Llosa to contemporary authors such as O’Connell and Cormick. The prologue introduces the historical context of the Irish in Latin America as well as a theoretical framework to support the analyses in subsequent chapters. Each chapter is then dedicated to a different facet of the Irish-Latin American literary connection. Chapter 1 explores the translation of James Joyce into Spanish and the way in which contemporary Argentine writers dialogue with Joyce, problematizing the act of translation. Chapter 2 focuses on the ambiguous nature of Irish characters in Borges’s Ficciones and Vargas Llosa’s historical fiction El sueño del celta. Chapter 3 is dedicated to Latin American writers of direct Irish descendance and their expression of Irishness in the Americas. Finally, Chapter 4 analyzes echoes of Oscar Wilde in Caribbean Latino literature. The central question is how and why these Irish connections manifest themselves in contemporary Spanish American narrative. Ultimately, this dissertation argues that Irish characters and themes present a broader, more hybrid vision of Latin American identity, recognizing the multiplicity of languages, narratives, and selves. / Spanish

Connecting "Ray Brown's Bass Method" (1963) to "We Get Requests" (1964): A Comparative Analysis

Hitt, Eric 07 1900 (has links)
This research serves two main purposes: to create an analyzed edition of Ray Brown's bass lines from the Oscar Peterson Trio's 1964 recording We Get Requests, and to better understand Brown's lines through the lens of Ray Brown's Bass Method. This comparative analysis identifies significant events in the recorded music that closely relate to or resemble exercises from the book. By analyzing the music from the lens of Ray Brown's Bass Method, performers, students, and educators will gain a stronger understanding of the application of select technical devices provided by Brown in his book. The most prominent techniques discussed include scales and intervals, major triads, minor triads, and chords, exercises in tenths, rhythm patterns with drops, and diminished patterns. These evidence-based conclusions have significant applications in jazz bass pedagogy by revealing potential relationships between technical ideals and practical use. Although these conclusions may seem of concern only to jazz bassists, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the connection between pedagogy and performance.

Présences paradoxales chez Oscar Wilde et Samuel Beckett / Paradoxical presences in Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett's works

Degroisse, Elodie 17 June 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims at highlighting a deep literary continuity from Wilde to Beckett, through a poetic of the presence which keeps their works in a permanent instability, verging on the impossibility of interpreting, while underlining the specificities of the poetic ways they undertake. The absence is a strangely dense presence in the works of those two writers who get ghostly remainings, questioning the possibility of representation, of perception and otherness. Between presence and absence, death is at the core of works which reinvent the gothic legacy to express which leads to two crossed aesthetics of decomposition. The Wildean text is a hinge leading to the Beckettian representation of the disappearance of the frontiers between life and death. The presence also structures on a metatextual mode : through mise en abyme and metatheatricality, the representation becomes fragmentary in order to show the weaknesses of a paradoxical presence at the heart of a spectral theatre. The supremacy of art over reality and of style over substance appear : between exhaustion and profusion, their writings are characterized by precision and consistency while describing the wavering of certainties and conventions. Their ambivalent relationship to Ireland brings forth a text existing in the intermediary space between English, French and Gaelic. Their works foster the experience of presence verging on disapppearence, leading to an in-Between writing to dismiss frontiers, to find new passages and invent new ways.

Marquise do Ibirapuera: suporte ao uso indeterminado / Ibirapuera Park´s great marquee: support to the indefinite use

Gurian, Eduardo Pereira 09 May 2014 (has links)
This study aims to analyze the design, formalization and occupation of the Ibirapuera Park\'s Great Marquee, through a trajectory that begins with the definition of the architectural brief for the IV Centennial of the city of São Paulo celebrations in the 1950\'s. Then was the decision to undertake the construction of what would be the largest public park in the city, plus a built set centralizing most of the proposed activities during the festivities. At lhe same time this great work should show the strength of the State\'s progress, it would serve as a legacy to future generations. Thus, the construction of functional program and subsequent architectural design of Oscar Niemeyer and team, show up as a source of fundamental analysis to understand the emergence of the connecting element, a large marquee, between the proposed thematic pavilions. Showing the evolution of the design, its precedents and adversities during the construction period. Conforming the first part of this work. The second part of the work is concerned with the observation and data collection of the activities performed under this great cover upon completion of its construction. Demonstrating, through a significant sample size, its architectural ability to provide support to a number of uses, whether preprogrammed or spontaneous, over the last 60 years. Overcoming its initial briefing as a connection and support to the pavilions, it consolidates itself as a place of intense social life and meeting, open to unpredictability, to the indefinite use.

Preservação e sustentabilidade: restaurações e retrofits / Preservation and sustainability: restorations and retrofits

Silva, Roberto Toffoli Simoens da 20 September 2013 (has links)
A matéria é atual e urgente. / The fields of the Historical Monument Preservation and the Sustainability in the Civil Construction, although distinct, present certain degree of integration. They are areas that share of eminently collective processes in the advance of the knowledge, and that if contemporaries consecrate as important cultural traditions for the confrontation of the deterioration of the urban spaces. The substance is current and urgent. However, the debate on the architectural project in this area is incipient. How to evaluate the current interventions in degraded buildings? Which the relevance of the Theory of the Restoration and Sustainability in the construction of the recent cultural scenario? How to reintegrate abandoned buildings to the urban dynamics? These are complex issues that deserve attention. Therefore we consider the analysis of three interventions in eclectic buildings in the city of São Paulo, and whose strategies of occupation keep it summons usual relation with the adoption of uses and occupations. We will debate, therefore, a residential project - the condominium Américo Simões, and two academicals buildings - the Institute Oscar Freire of the College of Medicine of the USP, and the FAU - Vila Penteado, of the same university. Each in case were analyzed through a system of values, where the individual and collective dimensions of projects are articulated in intention to produce a vision of set of the proposals. The first value is called cultural, that is, it has its definitions attributed to the historical and aesthetic research and attributes to the real properties common values of interest to all the society. As, on the other hand, it receives the name from authorial value and turns it the recognition of the contemporary decisions, of the responsible architect for the proposal, and that they are gifts in the party architectural of the restorations. Of our point of view this methodology offers to learning possibilities technician and ethical of this debate in particular, where we believe to be desirable the approach enters the trends of Preservation and Sustainability in the architectural projects.

Design do mobiliário moderno brasileiro: aspectos da forma e sua relação com a paisagem / Brazilian modern furniture design: format aspects and how it relates to the landscape

Melo, Alexandre Penedo Barbosa de 03 April 2008 (has links)
This thesis outlines a visual reading regarding the history of modern furniture in Brazil and how it relates to tropical nature. It identifies how the furniture shape construction was affected by the presence of tropical landscape and vegetation surrounding the Brazilian homes by considering the first pieces and designs for the works of Gregori Warchavchik, Flavio de Carvalho, Lucio Costa, and Oscar Niemeyer. It extracts from the drawings and speeches of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright delivered in Brazil and also from other local events the conditions imposed by the Carioca landscape (in the city of Rio de Janeiro) as well as its influence onto the built space, of which the qualities are mirrored on the furniture shape. The work of Joaquim Tenreiro, in 1942, as a precursor of modern furniture in Brazil, was followed by a number of initiatives of local and radicated foreign architects to link tropical nature and home environment to address a design method unit. It concludes identifying the key characteristics of furniture shape and its exponents systematized in chronological map.

The art of playing chess without being able to observe your opponent : A qualitative research subsidized by Oscar Properties and Aros Bostad during the housing development crisis

Zandi, Mounes, Norberg, Agnes January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine how Crisis Management can be applied when formulating crisis communication, and whether there is a distinct difference in how regular communication is built. This thesis consists of a case study subsidized by two companies in the housing industry, Oscar Properties and Aros Bostad, during the crisis on the housing development market 2018. Four qualitative semi-structured interviews with active experts in crisis communication are carried out with the aim of supporting and developing the analytical basis of the study. After completing the study, the authors have compiled and presented a model based on Crisis Management's three different phases and combined it with dimensions from the Expressiveness Quotient-model. The models structure has changed to be circular and defines crises like a cycle. The cycle is carried out without any clear delimitations between the different crisis phases, since the study shows difficulties in distinguishing these. The purpose of a model like this is to remind the organization that they do not operate in a context separate from the outside world but that these factors may affect the organization anyhow. An example from this study and the housing development industry is the government's introduction of amortization requirements, an external factor that the organizations had to consider and came to influence the market. Another example of an external factor which is difficult to plan and predict, is media coverage and how it will affect the organization's reputation.
