A game of appearances : the mask of Oscar Wilde

Gravem, Bruna Cardoso January 2013 (has links)
Ali são examinadas as primeiras tragédias e, a seguir, as obras que o tornaram um autor polêmico na Inglaterra Vitoriana: “The Portrait of Mr. W. H” e The Picture of Dorian Gray. / This dissertation examines how three strings tangle together in Oscar Wilde’s art: the person, the author and his literary works. The goal of this research is to understand the creative process of this author, whose plays go from irreverent to polemic. The polished humor and wit applied in his analysis of social behavior, trademarks in Wilde’s writing style, approximate the ability shown by the author, as well as by his characters, to adapt to different circumstances through the use of masks, or personas, that enable them to escape intricate situations. The concept of mask is supported on Carl Gustav Jung’s theory. This paper is constructed in three chapters, in which it is analyzed aspects and circumstances of the author’s life that contributed to his unique writing style and is reflected on his literary works. The first chapter deals with the person Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde, and the movements that he partook in so that his strong personality and the strict Victorian environment could harmonize themselves in his life. This paper approaches the ways the society he was brought up into affected him, pointing out aspects in which he affected this society in return. Throughout this process Wilde created many masks that he would use his whole life to be able to navigate through different groups he was related to however he wished. The second and third chapters present the author Oscar Wilde and the sequence of different literary works written by him, evaluating how the circumstances in his personal life shaped him, creating the author’s writing style. Not only this paper considers the Aesthete in Wilde, but also the reception of his works by the public that was contemporary to him. In the second chapter it is presented the concepts of mask and shadow, and how they reflect on Wilde’s work and personal life. It is also examined his first tragedies and the literary works that made him become a polemic author in Victorian England: “The Portrait of Mr. W. H.” and The Picture of Dorian Gray. In the third chapter it is mentioned the brightest moments in his career, his comedies of society, as well as his soberest, with the work he wrote in prison and in the last few years of his life. Still in the third chapter, it is discussed the legacy left by Wilde, commenting on the social changes that led to a new reception of his works, as they continue to be relevant even a century after their creation. On my final considerations, I reiterate the goal of this research, which is to contribute with a reading on the style of this great writer, based on the analysis of the relation between this eccentric Irish man and the unmerciful Victorian society that he lived in.

The purpose of this study is to compare the context of publication of the only novel by Oscar Wilde, \The Picture of Dorian Gray", in England and in Brazil. "Pegar primero: he ahí la ley" : Estereotipos de género en una obra de Oscar Castro / "To hit first: that’s the rule" : Gender stereotypes in one work of Oscar Castro

Cotal San Martín, Nirvana January 2016 (has links)

Současné podoby kultury chudoby / Tepito and its transformation since 1960 to the present. The present forms of the culture of poverty

Omastová, Kristýna January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis I describe the transformation process of Tepito, the "brave neighbourhood" in Mexico City, from 1960 to the present day. In this microhistory, I intend to explore how the great socio-economic changes, that have occurred in Mexico in the last 60 years, have been reflected locally. I especially focus on the incorporation of the traditional Mexican society into the modern and globalized world; The process of corporatization of the popular sector into the politics of the single party; The transition from the stabilizing development economic model (characterized by the Import substitution industrialization) to neoliberalism; The gradual rupture of the social fabric hastened by the urban planning in the 60s and 70s, the 1985 earthquake and the proliferation of drug trafficking and armed violence; And the beginning of the digital era. I also try to explore the validity of the Culture of Poverty theory which was formulated by the anthropologist Oscar Lewis during his field research in Tepito in the late 50's of the last century and I describe which of the aspects of the theory have changed.

Rojas Prudencio, Hardy January 2017 (has links)
Tesis

Lied versus Oper – Pole musikalischer Gattungen bei Oscar Bie

Ringendahl, Elisa 29 October 2020 (has links)
A comparison of Oscar Bie’s monographies Die Oper and Das deutsche Lied shows that opera and ‘Lied’ are two extremes in Bie’s understanding of musical genres. While opera according to Bie is an “impossible work of art” which arises from countless contradictions, the low-conflict ‘Lied’ forms an opposite pole. Bie’s perception influences the way he deals with the two genres in writing: while opera is suitable for an adequate feuilleton, ‘Lied’ is not. Bie’s comparison gives him the possibility to break with established patterns of genres. It becomes apparent that for him opera takes on a special role in that it represents the culmination of the basic features of music. As a critic, Bie demands utmost congruence between object and written representation. Writing about music means to be an artist who deals with the same work of art but in another medium.

Offshore Outsourcing of the United States Semiconductor Manufacturing: Management Approaches and Strategies

Mostofi, Oscar 01 January 2017 (has links)
The United States manufacturing employment decreased 33% from 1985 to 2014. During the same period, the United States semiconductor manufacturing, accounting for 1.7% of the total of the United States manufacturing workforce, lost 35% of its employees. The decline in semiconductor manufacturing jobs began in 1985 when semiconductor firms began offshoring product manufacturing overseas because of low cost of qualified labor force and facilities. This qualitative case study explored the analytical approaches and strategies business leaders of semiconductor firms that offshore manufacturing use in making informed strategic outsourcing and offshoring decisions conducive to sustainability and profitability of operations. The location theory provided the conceptual framework for this research study. Semistructured interviews were conducted using video conferencing with 5 midlevel managers who conducted offshoring or were currently offshoring semiconductor manufacturing. There were 10 themes identified and analyzed from transcription software. The themes were manufacturing cost, onshore manufacturing, offshoring site selection, competitive cost analysis, offshoring advantages, offshoring disadvantages, national manufacturing program, offshoring, reshoring, and social Impact. The findings showed that offshoring of the semiconductor product manufacturing will continue because of lower cost of operation. Social change could ensue if the leader of firms, together with the educational institutions and lawmakers, establish a national program for the industrial type of knowledge to build skills in the United States.

Cultural Value Differences in Arguments Between Presidents Ronald Reagan and Oscar Arias

Flores, Juan Carlos 01 January 1989 (has links)
Costa Rica embodies many of the characteristics which the United States would like to foster in Central America and elsewhere. In recent years, however, misunderstandings have often been present in the development of relations between both nations, and leaders. These differences have been particularly visible between Presidents Reagan and Arias when carrying out their foreign policies towards Central America. Recent developments in warfare, social and political unrest and economic crises in the region added to the emergence of a Central American political leadership--independent of U.S. decision making-have increased international misunderstandings between both political speakers. These misunderstandings are shown by Reagan and Arias' through their public discourses which have revealed deterioration in communication and cooperation between them. Since Reagan and Arias come from different cultures, their values are different, making it difficult for the two men to communicate effectively. Towards discovering the differences m cultural values underlying arguments between them, this study uses the Toulmin model to provide a critical and interpretative analysis of the exchange of political arguments from both leaders concerning Central America. Data were collected from public discourses by Reagan and Arias. An intercultural communication perspective is then used to assess the effects of the arguments on international understanding. This research was successful in isolating a number of political arguments concerning Reagan and Arias' respective policies toward Central America, it revealed consistently different underlying cultural values. These differences in cultural values may affect the mutual understanding between the two political leaders, since their discourses did not acknowledge each other's cultural values or patterns of thinking. At the core of Reagan and Arias' disagreements is the ethnocentric assumption that each is similar to the other. This assumption is not a recommended strategy for intercultural interaction. Because of the novelty of this type of interdisciplinary interpretative research, the results can not be compared adequately with previous research on values in public discourse. Further investigation in this area should support the worth of studying political argumentation from the combines approaches of rhetorical analysis and intercultural communication.

Kunskapspalatset : Ett vuxengymnasium i norra Fatbursparken / Palace of Knowledge

Rydving, Martin January 2018 (has links)
Tänk om man kunde stiga in i Kunskapspalatset ... / Imagine, a place, a palace, made for knowledge. A building made for learning, understanding and insight. A Palace of Knowledge! The Palace of Knowledge is a building for adult education, for grown-ups taking up courses from ordinary school. It is at the same time a building for conferences, trade fairs, events, meetings, lectures and other means of the growth of knowledge. As an outset for the project I took inspiration from Rafael’s School of Athens, where knowledge is to be felt in the air. The Palace of Knowledge is an attempt to, in present time, make it a reality. The building lets the park outside in while at the same time giving it room. It is inspired by a combination of antique architecture and postmodernism. In order to link to the antique, I have had in mind Vitruvius’ elements of architecture: firmitas (strength) utilitas (utility) venustas (beauty), that together form a unified whole. Among the variety of architectural styles, it is the antique, with its classical columns, that perhaps is most readily associated with dignity and pride—something that adult education deserves more of. Through a playfulness with architectural traditions and a thoughtful relationship with its context, a building is formed that makes a bold mark while simultaneously giving room, and the combination of the antique and classical with the postmodern and original is thereby given. The constant flow of people along the central path through the park between the two nodes Medborgarplatsen in the east and Södra Station in the west is now greeted by the Palace of Knowledge and its front with what I have termed “inverted pillars”. The building is clean, as if cast in one piece, without protruding parts. A building that triggers thinking. Adult education is now standing with pride and dignity in the heart of Södermalm. If only one could step inside the Palace of Knowledge ...

Machismo, Carnival, and the Decolonial Imagination in the Writings of Junot D<Ã>az

Price, Joshua Evans 01 March 2018 (has links)
This work explores Junot Daz as an author of decolonial imagination, and more specifically, how the carnivalesque nature of Dominican machismo as influenced by Trujillos el tguere masculinity creates liminal space for self-determination in opposition to colonial imagination. In exploring Dazs primary masculine characters, Oscar de Leon and Yunior de Las Casas, I trace the initial decolonial turn engendered by tigueraje performance, namely its projective creation of self outside of colonial domination. El tguere machismo as empowering for Dominican males, however, is problematized by its reciprocal domination of both women and men who fail to meet the tigueraje ideal. It becomes an attempted cure that is ultimately symptomatic of the extent to which the effects of insidious ideologies and political policies, in this case, imperialism, perpetuate themselves across time, space, and perhaps most significantly, cultures. Ultimately, identifying Junot Daz as decolonial author is a misrepresentation; though Daz writes to break free of coloniality, his failure to largely acknowledge in his writing the cost and damage done to Dominican women reveals a narrow focus antithetical to the larger goals of decoloniality.
