A longer working life for Australian women of the baby boom generation? � Women�s voices and the social policy implications of an ageing female workforce

With an increasing proportion of older people in the Australian population and increasing health and longevity, paid work after the age of 65 years may become an option or a necessity in the future. The focus of this research is on Australian women of the baby boom generation, their working futures, and the work-retirement decision. This is explored both from the viewpoint of women and from a social policy perspective. The research draws on Considine�s model of public policy, futures studies, and Beck�s concept of risk society. The research comprises three studies. Using focus group research, Study 1 explored the views of Australian women of the baby boom generation on work after the age of 65 years. Study 2 aimed to explore current thinking on the research topic in Australia and overseas. Computer-mediated communication involving an Internet website and four scenarios for the year 2020 were used for this study. Study 3 consists of the analysis of quantitative data from the Healthy Retirement Project, focusing on attitudes towards retirement, retirement plans, and the preferred and expected age of retirement. The importance of choice and a work � life balance emerged throughout the research. Women in high-status occupations were found to be more likely to be open to the option of continuing paid work beyond age 65 than women in low-status jobs. However, the women were equally likely to embrace future volunteering. The research findings suggest that policies for an ageing female workforce should be based on the values of inclusiveness, fairness, self-determination, and social justice, and address issues of workplace flexibility, equality in the workplace, recognition for unpaid community and caring work, opportunities for life-long learning, complexity and inequities of the superannuation system, and planning for retirement. Further, providing a guaranteed minimum income for all Australians should be explored as a viable alternative to the current social security system.

Age of Activism in the Face of Fascism : Mobilizing Grandmotherhood through the Movement Identity of OMAS GEGEN RECHTS

In critical times of reawakening right-wing ideologies in Germany, the social movement OMAS GEGEN RECHTS (transl. ‘Grannies against the far right’) sets a determined, yet by many unexpected, political statement against fascism. This thesis draws on collective identity theory and symbolic interactionism to conceptualize the activists’ communicative and strategic use of the grandmother self-designation. Based on semi- structured interviews, photo elicitation method, participant observation, and song lyrics, the work explores the expressive and symbolic meaning of their collective action, communicative objects and processes. The grounded analysis points to four themes of identity negotiations – (1) loudness, (2) visibility, (3) commemoration and (4) peacefulness versus ruthlessness – to reveal how OMAS GEGEN RECHTS re-appropriate grandmotherhood. With the lens of feminist gerontology, it becomes apparent that the activists’ self-designation ‘OMA’ extends far beyond anti-fascist commitment by challenging traditional images of female ageing. / In kritischen Zeiten wiedererstarkender rechter Ideologien in Deutschland setzt die soziale Bewegung OMAS GEGEN RECHTS ein entschlossenes, wenngleich für viele unerwartetes politisches Zeichen gegen den Faschismus. Mit Theorien der kollektiven Identität und des symbolischen Interaktionismus konzeptualisiert diese Arbeit den kommunikativen und strategischen Gebrauch der Selbstbezeichnung ‚Oma‘. Deren expressive und symbolische Bedeutung in Form von kollektiver Aktion sowie kommunikativer Objekte und Prozesse wird auf Grundlage von Interviews (mit visueller Unterstützung), teilnehmenden Beobachtungen und Liedtexten untersucht. Die fundierte Analyse verweist auf vier Themen der Identitätsverhandlungen – (1) Lautstärke, (2) Sichtbarkeit, (3) Gedenken und (4) Friedfertigkeit versus Wehrhaftigkeit. Die Themen zeigen auf, wie OMAS GEGEN RECHTS den Begriff der ‚Großmutterschaft‘ neu interpretieren und ihn sich aneignen. Aus der Perspektive der feministischen Gerontologie wird deutlich, dass die Selbstbezeichnung der Aktivistinnen ‚OMA‘ weit über antifaschistisches Engagement hinausgeht, indem sie traditionelle Bilder des weiblichen Alterns in Frage stellen.

The central problem in this dissertation entails how the concept volksmoeder (mother of the nation) gradually developed to secure a place in the Afrikaans drama. Chapter 1 determines the hypothesis of this dissertation. Chapter 2 focusses on the volksmoeder characteristics. The conclusion reached in Chapter 2 is that Maria in Langenhoven’s Die vrou van Suid-Afrika (1918) reveals similarities and contrasts with female characters in Dutch plays. Chapter 3 ascertains that characteristics of female personages as mothers of the nation determine their positions in patriarch/volksmoeder relationships in W.A. de Klerk’s Die jaar van die vuur-os (1952). Different types of volksmoeder appear in the above-mentioned farm play and in H.A. Fagan’s Ousus (1934). Chapters 4 and 5 identify how the present day volksmoeder in recent plaasdramas such as Deon Opperman’s Donkerland (1996), André P. Brink’s Die jogger (1997), Ek, Anna van Wyk (1986) and Die koggelaar (1988) by Pieter Fourie, indicate a further development in the concepts patriarch and volksmoeder. In the latter’s Koggelmanderman (2003) the man and woman are removed from the idea of gender. / Die sentrale probleem in die verhandeling behels hoe die konsep volksmoeder met verloop van tyd in die Afrikaanse drama neerslag gevind het. Hoofstuk 1 bepaal die hipoteses van die verhandeling. Hoofstuk 2 fokus op die kenmerke van die volksmoeder. Die gevolgtrekking in hoofstuk 2 is dat Maria in Langenhoven se Die vrou van Suid-Afrika (1918) ooreenstem en kontrasteer met Nederlandse vrouefigure. Hoofstuk 3 stel vas dat vrouefigure se kenmerke as volksmoeders hul posisie binne die patriarg/volksmoederverhouding in W.A. de Klerk se Die jaar van die vuur-os (1952) bepaal.
