The Social Life of the Student - A design Project / Studentens sociala liv - Ett designprojekt

Jensen, Fredrik January 2009 (has links)
<p>This report describes from start to finish how a new design and extension of the Gengras student union center at the University of Hartford was done. The report will be using a project that was made by me and explains how the whole project was planned by contacting S/L/A/M Collaborative Inc. all the way until the final outcome was presented for a final jury. It explains the whole chain process one should use when designing a building such as different analysis, precedent studies, concept development and how to approach the design project. New technologies, the feature of access and flexibility are the main influence words in the design that is being used as an example. These words can be found and felt throughout the whole building both in the façade drawings and in the plan solutions. The result was a building that is more organic and flexible in its forms and spaces than current architecture is today. A sort of architecture that comes more and more in which will shape the society in the future. My building also keeps a sense of the old façade to create a transition between the new and the old. The old and the new cooperation prove that the innovative design does not destroy the old building; it only enhances it and prepares it for the future.</p>

Estimations of Delay Costs caused by Roadworks

Wennström, Jonas January 2010 (has links)
When roadworks are performed, one of the impacts is delays in the traffic. Partly because of reduced speed limits past the work zones but mainly because of the facility's limited quality of service. This could result in significant delays for the road users with lost work and spare time as a consequence. The lost time in congestions could have been used more efficiently. It is therefore of interest to estimate these delays for different types of roadworks to calculate its macro economical impact. The estimations may be a factor in different types of planning, for example in roadwork planning, in work zone scheduling or in life cycle assessments. The estimations can be conducted using different methods, such as analytical, queuing theory or macrosimulation. However, to include the details of specific work zones an analysis method of higher detail is required. First to include varying geometric details, secondly due to the higher level of detail in the representation of the traffic. Therefore may microsimulation be a suitable analysis method. The purpose of this master thesis was to investigate microsimulations suitability for work zone analysis, by using the software AIMSUN. AIMSUN were different work zone types modeled, first of highways. Later was a 2-lane road modeled for which the traffic control was a fixed signal, then controlled by a simpler extension developed in C++ that simulated a flagger control. Using a developed helper program, the work zone models could be simulated for a large set of daily flow levels and heavy vehicle ratios. Together with corresponding results for normal conditions, it was possible to calculate the delays. The results were relationships between the total delays, for various heavy vehicle ratios. A concern with the results was deviations of the delays for different daily flows and heavy vehicle ratios. Even if the deviations will not have any greater impact on the total cost, they may be unwanted in decision models. Processing of the result may therefore be necessary. This master thesis has showed that microsimulation may be a suitable method to analyze work zone impacts. Using the high level of detail, work zones special character can be captured. Possible future work is to improve the reliability of results by performing validations of results with real work zone data to compare speeds, headways and queue lengths. Additional work may include to consider the diversion delays.

The Right Mental AttitudeCan Change an Entire Industry

Ekeskär, Andreas January 2009 (has links)
<p><em>“Knowledge is like money: to be of value it must circulate, and in circulating it can increase in quantity and, hopefully, in value.” I fallstudiens slutskede genomgick företaget en organisationsförändring och aviserade en ny vision som sträcker sig ett halvt decennium fram i tiden, i den bör knowledge management ingå som en kärnprocess för att säkerställa att värdefulla kunskaper inte går förlorade.</p> / <p><em>“Knowledge is like money: to be of value it must circulate, and in circulating it can increase in quantity and, hopefully, in value.”</em> – Louis L’Amour</p><p>Knowledge is often something taken for granted in many organizations, but the fact is that knowledge is a valuable resource which if well managed can be a tremendous resource for an organization. Knowledge management is the organizational theory that studies the retrieval of knowledge resources. Key concepts are the feedback of experience and knowledge the organization may have learnt in assignments and projects, lessons which will be passed on to other people within the organization so that they can be used by others in later projects.</p><p>The construction industry is a major industry in Sweden with almost half a million employees. The industry, however, begins to believe in matters of knowledge, skills and collaborations and is slowly but surely changing. A company that has actively worked on these issues is the technical consultant Grontmij AB, whom is described as a challenger due to their ambition to change the entire industry.</p><p>Grontmij is Europe's fifth largest consulting engineering group, working mainly in building construction, environment and energy. Since it became operational in the Swedish market it has radically changed from being a patchwork of companies with roots in the public sector, to one of the largest and most successful technology consultants. Emphasis of the work has been to change the culture to one where collaboration and business acumen are key ingredients.</p><p>The purpose of this master thesis has been to explore how technology consultant Grontmij is working with knowledge management and, hopefully, also provide other technical consultants valuable insights on knowledge management.</p><p>Empirical relevance of the enterprise and how it works with knowledge management have been collected mainly through participant observation, document analysis, conversations, interviews and a survey. Empirical relevance, along with theories concerning knowledge management have been analyzed based on the concepts of culture, organization, leadership and ICT to provide suggestions for how Grontmij can improve its work on knowledge management.</p><p>In conclusion, Grontmij has come a long way in its efforts to manage knowledge but a long journey remains. In the case study's final phase, the company undertook an organizational change, and announced a new vision that stretches half a decade into the future, in it knowledge management should be included as a core process to ensure that valuable knowledge are not lost.</p>
