The Reproduction of Patriarchal Ideological Hegemony in Soap Opera: A Case Study

Howard, Rose Allison 08 1900 (has links)

This research analyzes the reproduction of patriarchal ideological hegemony in the soap opera Another World using Stuart Hall's theory of the mass media and his conceptualization of ideology. A structural analysis of five one hour video-taped episodes of Another World reveals how the soap opera text constructs meaning fulfilling the three functions of the mass media, and thus, reproducing patriarchy's hegemony. This research confirms Hall's theory of the mass media and the propositions which flow from his conceptualization of ideology. Moreover, this research is the first attempt to systematically apply Hall's theory to the study of soap opera. It goes beyond the generalizations of his theory to look at the particularities of soap opera which contribute to the reproduction of patriarchal ideological hegemony. However, it is seen that what is problematic to this research, and all research on soap opera, is a lack of a theory of the reader.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Barbie

Gale, Taylor Michelle 22 November 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The stereotypes placed over men and women throughout various forms of media, including film and TV, song, printed media, and even through objects like toys, have a large impact on society as a whole. Kumari and Joshi (2015) explain that media plays an important role in sharing information concerning what deems to be the fabric of contemporary culture, which can aid in changing, or perpetuating long standing societal norms. This study identifies how Greta Gerwig's Barbie (2023) approaches the themes of the portrayal of women in the media through the Barbie film, examining themes such as objectification, self-objectification, and the ultra-thin body ideal. While the film critiques societal expectations of women, it paradoxically reinforces the same beauty standards it seeks to challenge, highlighting the complexity of media portrayals. The contrast between Barbie Land's matriarchal utopia and patriarchal dominance underscores the toxic effects of rigid gender roles, particularly on Ken's transformation. Ultimately, this thesis explores how the film encourages women to embrace their femininity and men to reject hyper masculine norms, contributing to broader discussions on gender, power, and identity in popular culture.

Blaming the victim : patriarchal anthropology and the legal culpability of female rape victims

Lawton, Amy 01 January 2007 (has links)
Discussions of rape inevitability tum to the actions of the victim. This thesis documents some of the ways that American law tends to blame rape victims for the crimes against them, rather than blame the perpetrators of rape. This study contends that such an anti-victim reaction arises because patriarchal anthropology, the philosophy of living which grows out of patriarchal theology, proclaims that women are not only sinful but the very cause of sin. The central focus of this thesis is American case law pertaining to rape, critiqued through the lens of patriarchal anthropology. The cultural bias against the victim extends into the heart of the American legal system. This study seeks to demonstrate that patriarchal anthropology and the normalization of rape culture has created a justice system in which blaming the victim is acceptable, and in which the state of mind, previous actions, or appearance of the victim are inappropriately considered when deciding the innocence or guilt of an alleged rapist.

Religious affiliation and religiosity : variations on the perceptions of domestic violence

Carey, Amelia Brooke 01 January 2010 (has links)
As the rate of domestic violence hovers around 27% of violent crimes in the U.S., and approximately three million men and women are victims of domestic violence per year, it is apparent that this epidemic is still prevalent in our homes (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2007). Social scientists remain interested in risk factors and correlates of domestic violence even after more than three decades ·of research. One area of investigation is the correlation between religion and domestic violence. The factors related to religion which have been suggested to contribute to domestic violence include a patriarchal social structure and the socialization of gender-specific roles (Pagelow, 1984). This project's aim is to conduct analyses on perceptions of domestic violence held by different religions, and people of varying levels of religiosity.. Through secondary data analysis of the Perceptions of Homelessness and Domestic Violence Survey(Institute of Social and Behavioral Sciences, University of Central Florida, 2009), the research will evaluate the relationship between myth-based and empirically based domestic violence statements and the respondent's religious affiliation and religiosity. The project's hypotheses are that those of more conservative religions and of a higher level of religiosity will be more likely to endorse myth-based victim blaming statements. It is hoped that these conclusions will lead to a more thorough understanding of the implications of patriarchal beliefs and gender-specific roles customarily found in religious teachings.

Det handlar om att bygga broar mellan de kulturella enklaverna och samhället : En kvalitativ studie om hedersrelaterad utsatthet och integration / It's about building bridges between the cultural enclaves and society : A qualitative study of honor related vulnerability and integration

Chachan, Mariham, Henriksson, Susanne January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine how professionals in some of Swedens shelterhomes describes what honor related vulnerability involves on an individual and structural level and how the honorcontext and society affect men 's and women's opportunities for inclusion and participation in the Swedish society. Individuals living in the honourcontext live with a double vulnerability. This means that these individuals are doubly oppressed, both from the context in which they live but also the society has a contributory role of the vulnerability. We have come to the conclusion that there are a lot of embedded discrimination in society. The integration of individuals within the honorcontext is also affected by factors that can be related to the individuals within the context and societies treatment of individuals. Honour related vulnerability has often been associated with cultural norms and violence against women, this paper wants to illustrate how the honorproblems and the integration of these individuals can look like from an individual - and societal perspective. The essay will have a qualitative perspective where we answer the purpose by interviewing professionals from six of Sweden's shelterhomes. The interviews were semi-structured, which contributed to rich stories when interviewees themselves were able to influence what they regarded as important to highlight. The reason we chose sheltershomes was that they could provide the necessary information about honor related vulnerability and integration. We have taken the help of five theoretical bases to explain the problems that exist in some of Sweden's families and to understand how the honorkontext and society affect integration. These theories include the theory of patriarchy and gender, ackultivisation, socialization and the theory of structural discrimination.

Honour killings: a thematic analysis within European newspapers

Coelho, Rita January 2017 (has links)
Honour killings are considered by the perpetrators the only path to maintain theirs and their family honour, preventing other's to follow behaviours that move away from traditional patriarchal values. With the aim of exploring how honour killings are characterised, a qualitative study within three European newspapers, in three different languages, was conducted. The findings showed that often the victims are characterised as young women and girls that want to live independently from their birth cultures or that acted in a way considered to be a dishonour to their family culture. Perpetrators are often described as family members, mostly males to whom honour is worth more than life. However, some of the news articles launch the debate of the thin line that divides honour crimes and domestic violence making this not a cultural problem but a widespread cross-cultural reality.

Vliv patriarchální ideologie na mediální konstrukci vegetariánství: diskurzní analýza genderově zaměřených titulů / Influence of Patriarchal Ideology on Media Construction of Vegetarianism: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Gender-Oriented Magazines

Sedláčková, Radana January 2014 (has links)
This paper examines the influence of the dominant masculine-hegemonic ideology and gender- compliance on agenda setting and framing texts in the context of a healthy diet, respectively vegetarianism, which is considered a healthy alternative if this diet is balanced. With reference to the already existing academic work on the topic of health discourse in the context of patriarchal ideology, this thesis aims to uncover through discourse analysis of texts in Czech lifestyle magazines for men and for women latent and subtle ideological structures supporting the social status quo and at the same time reveal the influence of the social construction of masculinity and femininity to the discourse of vegetarianism.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodrigo Garcia da Costa.pdf: 581645 bytes, checksum: 0a59ed1a1ed3ac7c6b62012aa4d297e4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The family is the basic institution of society. However, its conceptualization has been changing drastically in recent years, especially after the anti-cultural movements initiated in the mid-1960s and the erosion of patriarchal ideology and modernity, as well as the weakening of religious influence in Brazilian society. This mutation, which includes enlargement and socio-cultural changes, has effects in several areas of the humanities that reflect, as it could not be, the Law. The concept of family, in the legal and legislative spheres, is indicative and can be used to reflect social demands. In this way, the present work makes a historical progression of the origin of the Modern and Democratic State of Law, in order to examine the contemporary conceptualization of the family from the point of view of the country's legal scholars, the principles protected in our legal system and then, a legal definition of family will be proposed.
