The artist as researcher : a narrative case study of Lead Pencil Studio

This thesis is a narrative case study that examined the studio art practice of Lead Pencil Studio, a Seattle-based artist collaborative that explore our spatial relationships with architecture through site-specific installations. The case study specifically focused on the work of Daniel Mihalyo and Annie Han (Lead Pencil Studio) while they were at the Visual Arts Center in The University of Texas at Austin for a spring 2013 artist-in-residence program. The research focused specifically on the artists’ day-to-day process, examining the thoughts and actions that went into creating their work, Diffuse Reflection Lab, a two-story plywood structure that examined reflection’s effect on architecture through various vignettes. Through concentrated observations of the Lead Pencil Studio’s work and three semi-structured interviews, this thesis examined how traditional research practices are integrated into the studio art process. By examining the art/research relationship the author also situates this work in the field of practice-based research. While this work specifically focused on the research conducted by a pair of professional artists, it also extends to a broader argument about the role of research in art lessons. Since this thesis is based in art education, it connects the themes observed in the artists’ studio practice to interdisciplinary learning and arts integration. The author ultimately argues that Lead Pencil Studio’s art/research practice can be used in the classroom as an example of transdisciplinary learning and that it models a rigorous approach to creativity within other disciplines. / text

Apprentissage et annulation des bruits impulsifs sur un canal CPL indoor en vue d'améliorer la QoS des flux audiovisuels

Le travail présenté dans cette thèse a pour objectif de proposer et d'évaluer les performances de différentes techniques de suppression de bruit impulsif de type asynchrone adaptées aux transmissions sur courants porteurs en lignes (CPL) indoor. En effet, outre les caractéristiques physiques spécifiques à ce type de canal de transmission, le bruit impulsif asynchrone reste la contrainte sévère qui pénalise les systèmes CPL en terme de QoS. Pour remédier aux dégradations dues aux bruits impulsifs asynchrones, les techniques dites de retransmission sont souvent très utilisées. Bien qu'elles soient efficaces, ces techniques de retransmission conduisent à une réduction de débit et à l'introduction de délais de traitement supplémentaires pouvant être critiques pour des applications temps réel. Par ailleurs, plusieurs solutions alternatives sont proposées dans la littérature pour minimiser l'impact du bruit impulsif sur les transmissions CPL. Cependant, le nombre de techniques, qui permettent d'obtenir un bon compromis entre capacité de correction et complexité d'implantation reste faible pour les systèmes CPL. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons dans un premier temps d'utiliser un filtre linéaire adaptatif : le filtre de Widrow, nommé aussi ADALINE (ADAptive LInear NEuron), que nous utilisons comme méthode de débruitage pour les systèmes CPL. Pour améliorer les performances du débruitage effectué à l'aide d'ADALINE, nous proposons d'utiliser un réseau de neurones (RN) non linéaire comme méthode de débruitage. Le réseau de neurones est un bon outil qui est une généralisation de la structure du filtre ADALINE. Dans un deuxième temps, pour améliorer les performances du débruitage par un réseau de neurones, nous proposons un procédé d'annulation du bruit impulsif constitué de deux algorithmes : EMD (Empirical Mode Decomposition) associé à un réseau de neurones de type perceptron multicouches. L'EMD effectue le prétraitement en décomposant le signal bruité en signaux moins complexes et donc plus facilement analysables. Après quoi le réseau de neurones effectue le débruitage. Enfin, nous proposons une méthode d'estimation du bruit impulsif utilisant la méthode GPOF (Generalized Pencil Of Function). L'efficacité des deux méthodes, EMD-RN et la technique utilisant l'algorithme GPOF, est évaluée en utilisant une chaîne de simulation de transmission numérique compatible avec le standard HPAV.

Paper&Pencil Skills in the 21st Century, a Dichotomy?

There is a worldwide development, better to say a non-development: We teach paper & pencil skills in primary schools almost like we did 30 or 50 or 100 years ago. Till today the primary school teachers spend up to more than 100 hours in the class room to teach and to train old fashioned algorithms though in daily life situations and for business purposes everybody uses a calculator. Why do we waste so much time of our children to teach them things which later on they will not need? We see an emotional dichotomy. Despite the research results from many research projects in many countries there still is the fear that the use of calculators in primary grades will harm mental arithmetic and estimation skills. To explain and to overcome that fear we will reflect the nature of number sense and of paper&pencil skills more carefully. We realize that the development of number sense is an intuitive and unconscious mental process while the ability to get an exact calculation result is trained logically and consciously. To overcome the above dichotomy we must solve the hidden dichotomy number sense versus precise calculation result. We need a new balance. Different types of examples will be given how we can further the development of number sense in a technology dominated curriculum.

Représenter un objet géométrique complexe par un ensemble de primitives simples est une tâche souvent fondamentale, que ce soit pour la reconstruction et la réparation de données, ou encore pour faciliter la visualisation ou la manipulation des données. Le choix de la ou les primitives, ainsi que celui de la méthode d'approximation, impactent fortement les propriétés de la représentation de forme qui sera obtenue.Dans cette thèse, nous utilisons les boules comme seule primitive. Nous prenons ainsi un grand soin à décrire les unions finies de boules et leur structure. Pour cela, nous nous reposons sur les faisceaux de boules. En particulier, nous aboutissons à une description valide en toute dimension, sans hypothèse de position générale. En chemin, nous obtenons également plusieurs résultats portant sur les tests d'inclusion locale et globale dans une union de boules.Nous proposons également une nouvelle méthode d'approximation par union finie de boules, l'approximation par boules à (delta,epsilon)-près. Cette approche contraint l'union de boules à couvrir un sous-ensemble de la forme d'origine (précisément, un epsilon-érodé), tout en étant contenu dans un sur-ensemble de la forme (un delta-dilaté). En nous appuyant sur nos précédents résultats portant sur les unions de boules, nous démontrons plusieurs propriétés de ces approximations. Nous verrons ainsi que calculer une approximation par boules à (delta,epsilon)-près qui soit de cardinal minimum est un problème NP-complet. Pour des formes simples dans le plan, nous présentons un algorithme polynomial en temps et en espace qui permet de calculer ces approximations de cardinal minimum. Nous concluons par une généralisation de notre méthode d'approximation pour une plus large variété de sous-ensembles et sur-ensembles. / Describing a complex geometric shape with a set of simple primitives is often a fundamental task for shape reconstruction, visualization, analysis and manipulation. The type of primitives, as well as the choice of approximation scheme, both greatly impact the properties of the resulting shape representation.In this PhD, we focus on balls as primitives. Using pencils of balls, we carefully describe finite unions of balls and their structure. In particular, our description holds in all dimension without assuming general position. On our way, we also establish various results and tools to test local and global inclusions within these unions.We also propose a new approximation scheme by union of balls, the (delta,epsilon)-ball approximation. This scheme constrains the approximation to cover a core subset of the original shape (specifically, an epsilon-erosion), while being contained within a superset of the shape (a delta-dilation). Using our earlier results regarding finite unions of balls, we prove several properties of these approximations. We show that computing a cardinal minimum (delta,epsilon)-ball approximation is an NP-complete problem. For simple planar shapes however, we present a polynomial time and space algorithm that outputs a cardinal minimum approximation. We then conclude by generalizing the approximation scheme to a wider range of core subsets and bounding supersets.

Evaluation of proton treatment strategies for head and neck cancer and lung cancer based on treatment planning studies

The clinical introduction of proton therapy requires an extensive analysis of its benefits compared to conventional radiotherapy and a detailed analysis of possible uncertainties which might have serious consequences for patient treatment. In the first part of the presented thesis, the expected toxicities were evaluated for a treatment of head and neck cancer patients using a biologically adapted dose escalation schedule with photon and proton therapy. The feasibility of the dose escalation schedule could be demonstrated for both photon and proton therapy, since only a small increase in toxicity risk occurred for most toxicities. However, the expected toxicity risks were in most cases smaller with proton therapy. Furthermore, a higher benefit was found for patients with primary tumour locations in the upper head and neck area, who thus might be preferably referred to proton therapy. In the second part of this thesis, an extensive analysis of the impact of tumour motion in lung cancer treatment with active-scanning proton therapy was conducted. It could be shown, that dose degradations were small for tumour motion amplitudes below 5 mm. Parameters like the target volume concept, the optimisation approach, changes in the motion pattern and application sequence times had additional impact on the dose degradation. However, their magnitude was patient specific. Since not all parameters can be assessed before treatment, e.g. the motion pattern during treatment, prospective estimations should be supplemented by retrospective analyses. / Die Einführung der Protonentherapie in die klinische Praxis erfordert umfassende Analysen ihrer Vor- und Nachteile im Vergleich zur konventionellen Photonentherapie sowie detaillierte Untersuchungen der Auswirkungen von Unsicherheiten in der Therapieapplikation. Im ersten Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden die zu erwartenden Nebenwirkungen bei der Behandlung von Patienten mit Kopf-Hals-Tumoren mit einem biologisch-adaptierten Fraktionierungsschema inklusive Dosiseskalation mit Photonen- und Protonentherapie evaluiert. Dabei konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Dosiseskalation sowohl mit Photonen- als auch Protonentherapie angewandt werden kann, da die Wahrscheinlichkeit für das Auftreten von Nebenwirkungen in den meisten Fällen kaum erhöht wurde. Weiterhin wurden die Nebenwirkungswahrscheinlichkeiten mit der Protonentherapie im Vergleich zur Photonentherapie reduziert. The thesis consists of three main parts. In the first part the basic theoretic concepts of the Model-Based Frequency Analysis are described. The second part serves as a user manual for the super-resolution spectral analysis in the Signal Processing Toolset. The last part describes the application of the theory introduced in the first part, by means of testing the properties of the methods used by the Toolset.

Syftet med studien är att genom en kvalitativ metod bidra till befintlig forskning om olika strategier som elever i årskurs 1 och 2 använder sig av vid handskrivning. I studien använder jag mig av individuella intervjuer med både lärare och elever, samt observationer av elever när de skriver med penna. Fenomenografi har använts som metod vid databearbetningen. Genom en kvalitativ metod och ”embodied cognition” som teoretisk utgångspunkt får jag både höra vilka strategier eleverna beskriver att de använder sig av, men även se vilka kroppsliga rörelser och strategier de uppvisar. Det framkommer även hur lärarna beskriver sin skrivundervisning och att de inte har tid att notera elevernas kroppsliga uttryck. Resultatet åskådliggör att eleverna uppvisar många kroppsliga rörelser vid handskrivning. Med stöd i tidigare forskning visar sig dessa rörelser vara både kognitiva och kroppsliga strategier, vilka hjälper eleverna i deras skrivprocess. Ibland signalerar även rörelserna behov av hjälp, trots att eleverna inte själva är medvetna om dem. / The purpose of this study is to, through qualitative methods, contribute to existing research about different strategies that pupils in grades 1 and 2 make use of in handwriting. In the study, I carry out individual interviews with both teachers and pupils, along with observations of pupils when they are writing with pencils. The method used in data processing is phenomenography. Through a qualitative method and “embodied cognition” as a theoretical starting point, the pupils describe which strategies that they use, but also which body movements and strategies they show. The result also shows how the teachers describe their writing instruction and that they do not have time to take note of the pupils’ bodily expressions. The result illustrates that the pupils display many bodily movements during handwriting. Drawing on earlier research, this study shows that these movements are both cognitive and bodily strategies, which help pupils in their writing process. Sometimes the movements signal a need of help, even though the pupils are not aware of it themselves.
