Examining the Literature of Resistance: The Politics and Poetics of Chinese American Identity in the Works of Frank Chin and David Henry Hwang

Cheang, Kai Hang 01 December 2012 (has links)
In my thesis, I argue "against the grain," asserting that the war over authenticity among first-wave and second-wave-Asian-American writers is in fact a red-herring argument. The diversity within Asian American literature--be it nationalist, multiculturalist, or globalist--is initiated by a subversive kernel borne out of Asian American writers' frustration at the manner in which Asians had, up until now, been portrayed in popular culture. This thesis will pay particular attention to how Chinese American writers, namely Frank Chin and David Henry Hwang, contest the emasculated stereotype of Asian American identity by reclaiming historical agency, demanding representational authenticity, and urging for political equality in their literature. Following a discussion of Charles Taylor's location of the originality of identity in dis/re-covery, this thesis will commence with a Freudian and Benjimanian analysis of history in Chin's Donald Duk (1991) and Hwang's Golden Child (1996). This thesis then examines the role of Chinese literature in the composition of Chinese American literature, especially in Donald Duk, Gunga Din Highway (1995), FOB (1983), and Dance and the Railroad (1983). I ascertain that the similarities/differences yielded between the "ur-myth" of Guan Gong, a general warlord who served under Liu Bei during the Three Kingdoms era, and the Asian American depictions of Guan symbolically indicate Chin and Hwang's political beliefs on how Asian American literature should be interpreted in a post-civil-rights-movement era. To continue exploring the matrix of Asian American identity in a multicultural context, I contend that post-hyphenated identity is a conscientious performance of self by drawing on Chin's The Chickencoop Chinaman (1972) and Hwang's Yellow Face (2009) as examples.

Theater of jambands: Performance of resistance / Performance of resistance

Allaback, Christina L., 1976- 06 1900 (has links)
x, 181 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Jambands were born in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco with the Grateful Dead, who dominated this musical genre until the mid-nineties. Jamband expert Dean Budnick coined the term shortly thereafter to describe bands that perform long, improvised jams during their live shows. As these improvised shows have increased in popularity, they have become great spectacles, featuring light shows, filmed images, dancing, storytelling, and short plays. While the performance happening inside the arena deserves study, there is an equally interesting performance that takes place in parking lots before and after the shows. This is the performance of the identity of the jamband fan. How is jamband fan performance maintained and negotiated in the environment of the jamband show? Why do people need to perform this identity? Do they resist or contribute to the society that formed this subculture? Is it possible to resist society and perform "utopia," or are these fans' philosophies and styles always recuperated back into the society they try to resist? This dissertation seeks to analyze this performance as fans express behavior during pre- and postconcert activities. I will limit my study to fans of the four largest American arena jambands: the Grateful Dead, Phish, The String Cheese Incident, and Widespread Panic. While Performance Studies have sought to compare everyday life to theater, my dissertation seeks to use performance studies and subculture studies to examine whether a performance of an identity or membership within a group can be resistant to or contributing to society. This examination may help us gain a greater understanding of our social experiences. / Committee in charge: John Schmor, Chairperson, Theater Arts; John Watson, Member, Theater Arts; Theresa May, Member, Theater Arts; Daniel Wojcik, Outside Member, English

Perverse Fascination: Medium, Identity, and Performativity in the Art of Kara Walker

DiTillio, Jessica 11 July 2013 (has links)
Kara Walker is one of the most successful and widely known contemporary African-American artists today--remarkable for her radical engagement with issues of race, gender, and sexuality. Walker is best known for her provocative installations, composed of cut-paper silhouettes depicting fantastic and grotesque scenes of the antebellum South. This thesis examines Walker's work in silhouettes, text, and video in order to establish the unifying logic that unites her media. Walker's use of racist stereotypes has incited vehement criticism, and the debate over the political meaning of her work has been worked and reworked in the voluminous literature on her artistic practice. This thesis focuses on how Walker's defense and explanation of her own work functions as a performative and political component of the art itself. Walker's construction and performance of an artistic identity is an integral and intentional part of her overall practice and a key component to the interpretation of her work.

Performatividade da linguagem e heterogeneidade enunciativa em Machado de Assis: Esaú e Jacó e Memorial de Aires / Performativity of the language and enunciative heterogeneity in Machado de Assis: Esaú e Jacó e Memorial de Aires

João Batista Louzada 31 March 2010 (has links)
The aim of this work consists in the proposal of conceiving performativity and heterogeneity as general and inseparable principles of the linguistic activities of human beings. This inseparability permeates, in the enunciation plan, any linguistic-discursive manifestation. With regard to the performativity principle (< performative utterance), the present work is based on John Langshaw Austins studies (1962), and the heterogeneity principle relies on Jacqueline Authier-Reveuzs works (1982). Regarding the notion of heterogeneity, this includes both the linguistic expressions that explicitly admit, or not, the marks of a discourse other in the discourse (= shown heterogeneity), as those in which the exterior voices can only be seized from their resonances (inter)discursive (= constitutive heterogeneity). In relation to the principle of performativity, it is a global concept of language as a function of any act of enunciation, as this always constitutes an instrument of the human action on the world and on humanity. However, in the present thesis, the conceiving of performativity inherent in acts of language dialogues not only with Austins principle of to say is to do, but also with the formulas interactionist theory (Van Dijk, 2000) to say is to do doing. With regard to the corpus selected as a source of illustration of the principles mentioned, the present work includes the novels Esaú e Jacó (1904) and Memorial de Aires (1908), by Machado de Assis

Primary headteachers : perceptions on standards, accountability and school context

Burnitt, Michael Thomas January 2016 (has links)
The continuing improvement in standards and the associated direct school accountability has been at the forefront of school policy since the introduction of the Education Reform Act of 1988. Its introduction brought both top down curriculum control and the opening up of primary schools in England to neo-liberal market reforms. To facilitate direct market competition and raise standards, measures of performance were introduced, in the form of annually published national assessments (SATs) and from 1992 inspection by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education). These measures took on board the status of High Stakes Testing (HST), since their outcomes directly impacted upon the professional lives of all those working within primary schools. Prior to 1988, central government had started to address underachievement, for example, Better Schools (DfES 1985), but now, for the first time, individual schools and their leaders were to be directly responsible for the achievement, or otherwise, of their pupils through the publication of attainment data and regular inspection reports. The notion of performativity (Ball 2003) was introduced into English primary schools, where performance measures and judgements (HST) were used as a means of top-down regulation and policy enforcement. This study investigates current primary school headteachers’ perceptions of their own professional accountability. It further explores the continuing focus on standards and the constant pressures and conflicts heads currently face in terms of maximising pupil attainment outcomes. The fieldwork was carried out within thirty four state funded primary schools across the North of England. A questionnaire was used to survey headteachers’ current perceptions; this data located heads on to a conceptual framework (Figure 5.5). Heads are located into one of four positions regarding their perceptions of the Standards Driven Agenda (SDA) and HST. Heads from each of the positions were then interviewed, which formed the prime data collection tool. The research further examines the inter-relationship between socio-economic context and HST outcomes, addressing the question of the equality of the application of identical floor targets for all primary schools, regardless of circumstance. Schools falling within areas of high and low deprivation were identified, using the income deprivation affecting children index (IDACI); each area’s headteachers’ perceptions were then compared and contrasted, in order to identify any effects of context. Ranson’s (2003) typology and Ball’s (2003) conceptualisation of accountabilities were developed in order to explore the identified trend of heads resisting what they view as a ‘data dictatorship’, and seeking to reinstate a previous age of professionalism. A clear plea for a change was evident with a call for a shift away from the current focus on standards in English and maths to the adoption of a more balanced and creative curriculum, where both the academic and social needs of the children are being met. The desire to return to Grace’s (1995) notion of the cult of the ‘headmaster tradition’, with the reinstatement of higher levels of professional autonomy and trust, was evident within many of the participating heads, along with a strong sense of moral guardian and leadership. All heads are aware of the need to be accountable for the tax payers’ money used to fund their schools, accepting the need for accountability measures. However, both sets of heads acknowledge that when a school’s effectiveness is solely measured by means of HST, it fails to be a level playing field. Factors such as parental support and education, housing and income were all identified as significant contributing factors in pupil attainment, resulting in heads reporting that these factors were not taken into account when the performance of their school was judged. The study contributes to the knowledge of how serving heads balance the needs of their children, parents and staff, whilst ensuring that they continue to improve standards, as defined by successive governmental policy and thus meet the requirements of HST.

Performatividad de la ficción en la novela argentina contemporánea : relaciones de género en Griselda Gambaro, Sylvia Molloy, Perla Suez / Performativité de la fiction dans le roman argentin contemporain : rapports de genre dans les oeuvres de Griselda Gambaro, Sylvia Molloy, Perla Suez / Performativity in the contemporary Argentinian novel : gender correlations in Griselda Gambaro, Sylvia Molloy and Perla Suez

González, José 12 December 2016 (has links)
The concept of performativity has been developed by different approaches, ranging from speech act theory (J. L. Austin) to anthropological studies (Victor Turner), and has been considered an epistemological model known as “performative turn”. The performative theory has turned into an analytical category that aims to investigate cultural phenomena as a representation of acts and discourses, reaching its peak by gender studies as created by Judith Butler and the Performance Studies as a tool to analyze dramatic performances. However, its application to narrative phenomena has been scarce and there hardly exists any perspectives that would allow to consider gender as a performance within a novel.Based on the theory of gender performativity (Butler) and drama performance as modifiers of spectators’ realities, the present work aims in the first place to fuse both concepts and establish an epistemological framework that allows the analysis of gender performances in narrative fiction. Among these concepts the anti-essentialist ones by Butler about sex and gender, taboo, gender libretos and parody, stand out, as well as the elements of every performative act as depicted by Erika Fischer-Lichte in her theory on performance: unpredictability, perception and ambivalence.A corpus of contemporary Argentine literature was used to put into practice this theory. It consists of the novels Ganarse la muerte by Griselda Gambaro, El común olvido by Sylvia Molloy and “Letargo” by Perla Suez. The authors of these texts make use of a wide range of narrative strategies whose analysis will prove how gender is performed in novels.

This thesis, developed within the Postgraduate Education of the Faculty of Science and Technology of Universidade Estadual Paulista Program, Research Line "Training of education professionals, educational policies and public school" aims to analyze the influence of managerialism and performativity in education management of the state of São Paulo.
