Persistence of difference : a history of Cornish wrestling

Tripp, Michael January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this study was to provide an historical analysis of Cornish wrestling and in particular to address the following key questions: How has Cornish wrestling developed as a sport? Why is Cornish wrestling ‘different’? Why has Cornish wrestling survived? It was argued that in order to provide an adequate historical analysis it was necessary to locate the sport within an appropriate and relevant conceptual framework. Two fields of enquiry were identified as having the potential to provide this; mainstream British sport history and the ‘new Cornish Studies’. The main ideas and debates that form the basis for these two areas were reviewed and it was argued that British sport history offered only a partial interpretation for the history of Cornish wrestling as the evidence suggests it is different from other sports. It was further argued that with its emphasis upon ‘difference’ the ‘new Cornish Studies’ in general and Payton’s ‘centre-periphery model’ in particular offers a more appropriate conceptual framework, which is also rooted in a relevant local context. Payton developed his model to answer a number of questions relating to Cornwall’s distinctiveness: Why is Cornwall ‘different’? Why has this persisted? Why is there a strong sense of ‘Cornishness’ and separate identity which has survived until today? He concluded that Cornwall’s ‘difference’ has persisted because of its historical experience, which in each period has been distinct from other areas of Britain and has led directly to a unique identity. In Payton’s model, the privileged ‘centre’, which is the location of power and influence, is based largely in London and the south-east of England; whereas the ‘periphery’ is geographically remote from the ‘centre’, but dependent upon it. Payton proposed three phases of peripherality: ‘First’ or ‘Older Peripheralism’, characterised by geographical and cultural isolation from the centre; ‘Second Peripheralism’, which recognises the central importance of industrial change, producing economic and social marginality and ‘Third Peripheralism’ characterised by a ‘branch-factory’ economy promoting a process of ‘counter-urbanisation’. The structure of the thesis follows the phases of peripherality and argues the evidence is consistent with Payton’s ‘centre-periphery model’. The evidence also demonstrates that Cornish wrestling is ‘different’ and that ‘difference’ has persisted over time because of Cornwall’s historical experience, which in each period of peripherality has been distinct. Furthermore, throughout the entire period of the study, Cornish wrestling has been, and still remains, an important icon of Cornishness, which has ensured its survival.

Faktory rozhodování o místě trvalého bydlení ve vybraných periferiích Česka: příklad mladých rodin / The decision-making factors on the permanent place of residence in the selected Czechia's peripheries: the case study of the young families

Vrána, Petr January 2014 (has links)
This thesis tries to find out the causes of the permanent residence location choice and decision-making within the potentially different peripheral area of the Czech Republic, respectively Moravia, with the continuous demographic development. In this case, it is focused on the young families which could explain the current issue of the permanent residence location choice with regard to the significant likelihood recently finalised or proceeding residential mobility. For the purposes of the master thesis, it has been carried out the questionnaire survey within the designated peripheries of the Midwestern Moravia and the Eastern Moravian Slovakia in 2012 and it has been carried out the analytical operations using the statistic programme on the basis of the data obtained. At first, this thesis analyses the variability of the decision-making factors preferences, examines common and differentiating latent features of the decision-making process on the basis of the factors explored and observes the modality level of decision-making process according to the the residential mobility theoretical concept developed by Ero (2002). The second part is focused on the potential causalities of the decision-making factors and socio-cultural features of the areas observed, respectively is about the causalities of the...

Teatro e transformações sociais: arte e política semeando a cena periférica / Theater and social transformation: art and politics to seed the peripherical scene

Ulian, Eduardo Salles 20 September 2016 (has links)
The art is the result of historical and social development, overall it has always been combined to the social transformations, especially the theater and its expression forms. Understand this process of formation and itself unfoldings, is essential to understand, how and what are the ways the dramatic art, which pursued in each historic time and how these changes have impelled new expression forms somehow, tightly in an international context marked by deepening of neoliberal politics, the advances of the named globalization and its consecutive dispute for speeches and space of performance from the peripheries. Amongst these protagonists groups which fight for acknowledgement, the theatrical movement has placed itself in a bruising way seeking out acknowledgement spaces and affirmation of the peripherical identities. Many are the proposals of artistic groups, however, the theater practice in community which presupposes to build and conceive a space that valorize the social, the reinsertion, the team labor, the communal practice and the social justice have raised large interests, specially, on Latin American groups, because have increased the perspectives of groups from empowerment idea and networking labor. From this sphere, the historic and social development of theater, its transformations and the consecutive appropriation of the groups from peripherical regions, from towns before a practice denominated theater in community that we lean over trying to explain the important character of this labor accomplished on towns peripheries in Latin American, to direct this sight to the São Paulo City periphery, in Cidade Tiradentes district for Pombas Urbanas Group, its history and actions, seeking out to perform along this process the significant transformations occurred on theater shape along the history, the possible unfoldings, seeking out for aesthetics concept until the appearance of the theater in community practice; the Pombas Urbanas touch to this practice and the results obtained in last years, as of a radical contextualization lightened of Cultural Studies Theories and the Latin American critic thought, seeking out to understand how the peripherical perfoming can make significant social transformations from theater in community practice

A voz, o lugar e o olhar: culturas e periferias em Subúrbio de Chico Buarque / The voice, the place and the look: cultures and peripheries in Subúrbio by Chico Buarque

Rodrigues, Sandra Salavandro 26 July 2013 (has links)
The current dissertation aims to verify the approach of the outlying areas through the analysis of the poetic song Subúrbio, by Chico Buarque (Carioca, 2006), in order to analyze the poetic subjects enunciative place. Our hypothesis is that in the song there is an enunciator whose look distances itself from the themed matters and this approach is an aspect that prevails in almost of the reffered poet`s songbook

The periphery and its elites : conduits of political order or change ?

Azoulay, Rivka 27 June 2016 (has links)
Since the unfolding of the Arab revolts in 2011, we have witnessed the rise and revolts of marginalized communities at the periphery of power everywhere in the MENA region. Kuwait too has witnessed since the start of the millennium the rise of its periphery, its naturalized tribesmen, latecomers to the nation’s fabric. In this study, I analyzed this phenomenon and placed it in its deeper historical and political context. I explained that the implications of socio-political change happening within Kuwait’s badu population can only be understood if the nature of the authority structure of the Al-Sabah’s monarchy is properly comprehended. The novelty of the thesis lies in its historical sociological approach to decipher the nature of political order and authority in Kuwait. It argued that the core aspects of the contemporary authority structure of the Al-Sabah’s monarchy can be traced back to the original tribal dynasty functioning according to the logics of political power of Arabian dynasties as analyzed by the early Muslim scholar, Ibn Khaldun in his Al-Muqaddimah.

Mulheres e periferias como fronteiras: o tempo-espaço das moradoras do Conjunto Habitacional José Bonifácio / Women and peripheries as borders: the time-space of the dwellers of the Housing Complex José Bonifácio.

Carolina Alvim de Oliveira Freitas 19 October 2018 (has links)
This research intends to understand the crossroads between the transformations of the periphery space and the transformations of women\'s social roles. To do so, it is dedicated to investigate the case of the Housing Set José Bonifácio (known as Cohab II) in Itaquera, east side of São Paulo. The history of twentieth-century urban planning and the public-private plans of the twenty-first century seem to compose a movement of continuities and discontinuities that does not allow interpreting the production of space with the same eyes of brazilian classical urban thinking on the periphery. If the peripheral space of the metropolis is today a frontier for the expansion of capital, the same can be inferred in relation to working women, since the traditional representations of women seem to be being directed towards new roles. Entering through the urban space and the female body, therefore, appears as a double way of accumulation of capital. Feminist theory considered the split between the public space and the private space as the basis of the sexual division of labor that consolidated the capitalist mode of production and industrial society. In the transition to urban society, there is a shift of this persistent division, shuffling the functions and forms of the public and private spheres by the processes of fragmentation, homogenization and hierarchization of space. This means that it is not only the process of production\'s and work\'s restructuring, derived from the neoliberal rationality, that responds to the changes in relations between the sexes, but also the production and reproduction of space assume the induction of these relations. In this sense, we try to perceive the existing link between processes of exploitation (of work), oppression (sex and race) and espoliation (urban, real estate and financial) whose unity is woven by the totality. And it is with this totality that the method of field research in the José Bonifácio Suite is applied, seeking to understand the concrete socio-spatial practices of Cohab dwellers in their daily life. The scales of the apartment, the condominium and the Conjunto are referenced to develop the conclusions about the conception, the experience and the perception of the space by these women.

Kilowatts, megawatts and power : electric territorialities of the state in the peripheries of Ghana and Tanzania

Cuesta Fernández, Iván January 2018 (has links)
Recent years have brought a resurgence of state-led plans to expand access to electricity over African polities. Nonetheless, and in line with deep-seated patterns of infrastructural and general abandonment by the centre, very few of those plans have seriously addressed poor, distant, sparse and scarcely endowed peripheral regions. Those rare instances have received scant attention in the literature, despite their precious value to single out key interactions between national electricity regimes and core-periphery political linkages. Addressing that gap, this thesis pays attention to schemes of peripheral electrification to better understand how African states govern their peripheries. To that end, it scrutinizes two schemes of electrification: northern Ghana from 1989 to 2012, and southeastern Tanzania from 2004 to 2015. The thesis argues that in northern Ghana central rulers embarked upon electrification against the odds of geographical determinism, guided as they were by political motivations, chief amongst them the extraction of narrow electoral rents. By contrast, in southeastern Tanzania central rulers endeavoured to tap into the abundance of gas, governed by a determination to advance business models inscribed in the national electricity regime. Ultimately though, the central rulers in Tanzania were forced to re-politicize electrification to appease the deep local resentment caused by the very extraction of gas flowing toward the capital. Both cases thus illuminate varying trajectories in the interplay between national electricity regimes and core-periphery political linkages, that shaped the territorial strategies of electrification. In addition, this thesis also offers two revelations. One first revelation is that sub-national units exert significant mediations in the linkages between core and periphery, via alterations of distributional settlements. This goes against a stream of literature that pays attention exclusively to vertical strategies engineered from political rulers in the centre. The second revelation is that over the long-term electrification alters the political linkages between core and periphery. This squares well with the predictions of theories about the infrastructural power of the state. All in all, this work affords an embryonic analytical elaboration on the strategies of territoriality in the electrification of regional peripheries in Africa. From a political geography perspective, this helps to illuminate how sub-national electrification can simultaneously redraw and reinforce long-entrenched political linkages between core and periphery.

The Valuable Organisation : A study of how activities are calculated, controlled and made valuable

Christner, Carl Henning January 2015 (has links)
This thesis asks the question: how do organisational activities become valuable? This is one of the most central questions in organisational life. Members and students of organisations devote a great deal of time pondering what activities and strategies organisations should pursue. They tackle practical questions such as what performance measures and standards to use in the evaluation of people and activities, which products to bring to market, and how to define a valuable balance sheet. The thesis investigates how organisations deal with such questions, and how organisational activities become valuable in practice. The question of how organisational activities become valuable is addressed using a three-part longitudinal case study in a listed multinational manufacturing company. In particular, the study traces the multiple and changing valuations of three central organisational activities: corporate strategy, product development and production. Drawing on recent work within the technological turn in economic sociology, the analysis uses the concept of framing to explain how calculative agencies emerge and valuations change. It is argued that this conceptualisation of how organisational activities become valuable has implications for established theoretical understandings of the relationship between accounting, control and value in the social studies of accounting. The thesis argues for an alternative understanding of how economic calculations are performed and control is exercised in practice. In particular, it proposes an approach for how to make questions of value the focus of analysis in accounting research, without taking the vantage point of any implied centre. / <p>Diss.
