A transpersonal exploration of the mother-daughter relationship in transitional life cycles

De Villiers, Marleen 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The mother-daughter relationship and the feminine principle in the process of individuation are explored in this study. The mother-daughter relationship as the focus of the study is presented as the womb where the stories and experiences are in gestation. In presenting this research as a transpersonal exploration, the principles and practices of transpersonal psychology and transpersonal research are used as the lens through which the process of research is viewed. The study tells the stories of adolescent daughters and their menopausal mothers and their lives as girls and women in transitional life cycles. It also tells the stories of the author's mother and of herself, and offers their shared experiences of being daughters, and remembering that they are also the daughters of daughters, the mothers of whom have passed away a long time ago. The stories are presented in the mode of a narrative inquiry, becoming an exploration in itself. The author looks into the stories of what has been written by those who have mapped the territory of the transpersonal and narrative landscapes in psychology, education, research and psychotherapy. A research collage of the mother-daughter relationship, transitional life cycles, and also of aspects of the feminine and the process of individuation is created. Images of alchemy, archetypes, mythological figures and archetypal goddesses are added to allow this collage to become its own story. The study combines research methods used in transpersonal research and narrative inquiry. Data were gathered by making use of journal writing, mandala drawings, interviews, visual imagery and photographs, collage, writing letters, personal documentation, dreamwork, working with words and personal mythology. Transpersonal principles such as meditation, reflection, mandala drawings, intuitive listening and so forth were applied in working with the data. The researcher also used principles of narrative inquiry to assist in the process of processing the information and finding the stories. The research findings that emerged indicate that a mother and daughter can hold up a mirror to each other in order to see that there are experiences of abandonment and dependency in their relationship; another mother and daughter pair related to each other from a basis of limiting self-experience; and yet another mother and her daughter were seen to have a relationship that contains powerful potential for individuation through the process of growth and transformation. These findings may be relevant to the therapeutic and educational spheres of psychology, in training and in application. This research journey is an adventure that can be seen as symbolically walking the labyrinth, following the circular path towards the centre, and then back again, out into life. This journey is symbolic of the process of individuation as based on the mythology of the serpent Ouroboros that swallows its tail in order to become whole. The process of alchemy in psychology forms the container for this journey into wholeness. Like Theseus, beloved of Ariadne of antiquity, I took the golden thread in hand and stepped into the labyrinth. The journey could begin …

Patienters erfarenheter av att delta i forskning : En litteraturöversikt / Patients’ experiences of participating in research : A literature review

Blommé, Nina January 2015 (has links)
Background: Research and development is conducted in many areas of health care. This means that many patients seeking care and treatment may be asked to participate in research. A person who is ill and in need of care can experience him/herself, in the role of patient, ending up in a position of dependence in relation to health care professionals. The patient is seeking help and health care staff are those who by virtue of knowledge and ability to help patients have a stronger position. Being a patient and participating in research may thus imply receiving increasing attention, but also inferiority or dependency. Aim: The aim was to describe patients’ experiences of participating in research. Method: A literature review was performed based on results from ten qualitative articles, limited to adult patients with experience of participating in research. Results: The results are presented in four categories; exploring the decision to participate in research, Meaningfulness of participating in research, Perception of barriers related to research and from the feeling of support – to the feeling of abandonment. Discussion: The result has been discussed in relation to the life-world perspective according to Dahlberg and Segesten. Three main aspects of the results will be discussed; Barriers for participating in clinical trials versus willingness to participate, dependency on health care professionals – a risk factor both for the patient and the research trial, and the patient’s autonomy and participation in the decision-making about research.

Des éléments pour un enseignement de la "culture française courante" aux apprenants chinois plutôt sensibles à une "lecture interculturelle de l'environnement" / Elements for a teaching of the "current French culture" to the Chinese learners rather sensitive to an "intercultural reading of the environment"

Dong, Xiao 27 February 2018 (has links)
As different cultures have different world outlook and measure standards, it is quite different between teaching a native language and teaching foreign languages when two languages are combined with their cultures. Thus it is hardly possible to establish a standard which can be used in two teaching modes, especially when the two kinds of languages and cultures are totally different (such as China and France). However, the more difficult it is, the more it is worth exploring. Making efforts in understanding two kinds of languages and cultures, we are trying to establish such a standard by bringing in the concept of “Intercultural”. When a student is surrounded in an environment which is quite different from his mother tongue, culture is very important in his foreign language learning. That’s why we focus on Chinese students studying in France in this thesis. Without the help of the outside world, it would be really tough for an oversea student to adapt himself to the culture shock between two countries. Language varies in different contexts, moods, ages, genders, social backgrounds, regions and countries, let alone there are gestures, proverbs, historical allusions, customs and other hidden information which are even harder for a foreign student to understand. It is a great test for an oversea student to get along with the new language, socializing and the new culture. All the relevant knowledge in daily life is “culture”, more precisely, “daily culture” proposed by R.Galisson. We aims Chinese students studying in France as our studying objects. We collected and analyzed their daily lives and personal experiences through interviews. Then we are trying to use a teaching method emphasizing on “French daily culture” to help Chinese students adapt to the learning life in France.

Exploring HIV/AIDS stigma in the workplace : voice of the stigmatised

Jugdeo, Nesheen (Ramroop) 07 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to explore HIV/AIDS stigma in the workplace, with a special focus on the stigmatised. The sample consisted of 10 HIV/AIDS positive employees. A qualitative interview schedule was designed. The interview guide was used to facilitate one-on-one interviews with each participant. An analysis of the data revealed that the majority of the participants were shunned by family, friends and partners. Others were too ashamed or afraid to reveal their positive status. The majority of the participants did not feel comfortable revealing their positive status to their line managers and to their co-workers. All participants felt that others viewed people living with HIV/AIDS as dirty and unclean and many had been exposed to stigmatising behaviours towards them due to their HIV/AIDS positive status. As a coping mechanism, most participants noted that they would walk away if stigmatised against. Recommendations were made to address HIV/AIDS stigma in the workplace. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. A. (Industrial and Organisation Psychology)

Samlade upplevelser av self-compassion och dess inverkan på kost : En integrerande sammanställning av det kvalitativa forskningsläget / Collected experiences of self-compassion and its impact on diet : An integrated compilation of the qualitative research field

Bengtsson, Emma, Lidholm, Saga January 2023 (has links)
Backround: Dietary habits and the relationship to dietary habits are influenced by several factors and self-compassion has an impact on both according to previous research. Selfcompassion is based on three components which are self-kindness, mindfulness, common humanity. Aim: The aim of this study was to create a deeper understanding of the perceived connection between self-compassion and diet. Method: A literature review in the form of an integrative compilation of qualitative research. Result: The results report three themes: self-compassion affects the relationship to diet, selfcompassion affects dietary behaviors and self-compassion is a constantly ongoing work. Conclusion; Self-compassion has given different experiences such as increased awareness, increased presence, as well as increased focus on needs, nutrition and feelings related to diet compared to before. Everyday behaviors around diet have improved through self-compassion as people ate more slowly and overeat to a lesser extent. However, self-compassion takes work. Participants generally felt that self-compassion affected them positively.

Finding an educational niche for our son with PDD : an auto-ethnography

Hanekom, Pauline Wilna 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / Includes bibiliography / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: At birth every human being is at the starting point of many different journeys: journeys of discovery and change, and journeys of mental and physical growth. Most children follow a similar path of physical and mental growth to adulthood, achieving predetermined milestones at approximately the same age. But what happens to a child who cannot follow this path, a child born without a map? How do the diagnosis and subsequent educational journey of the child affect the parents of that child, parents who find themselves disabled by their experiences of parenthood and life? This study is an autoethnography. It was undertaken to reflect on the physical and emotional journey two parents experienced in finding an educational niche for their son who was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Delay – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), an Autism Spectrum Disorder. In an attempt to engage and involve the non-academic audience, while at the same time addressing the analytical needs of the researcher audience, evocative autoethnographic co-constructed narratives were combined with analytic autoethnography. Not only did I aim to fill in some of the gaps in researcher knowledge about South African parents’ experiences in finding educational support for their children with pervasive developmental delays, but I also wanted to provide knowledge, hope and encouragement to other parents, especially those parents who are at the start of a journey leading to a brighter future for their child with special needs. Hierdie studie is ‘n outo-etnografie.

Huard, Delphine 03 1900 (has links)
This research is an analysis of the perception on their activities of eight women of different age groups who have undertaken or are still practicing various forms of remunerated sexual activities in an indoor context. Most common forms of remunerated sexual activities addressed by women in the study include nude dancing with and without contacts, escort services, massage parlours and the phenomenon commonly known as "sugar daddy", when women exchange services for remuneration with a particular client. Even though street prostitution was not specifically addressed in the study, two female participants in the sample practiced both indoor and outdoor activities. The term “remunerated sexual activities” has been chosen to ensure a neutral perspective. We wanted to focus on an unbiased approach that encompasses both common views on prostitution, on the one hand, the one that is known to be the abolitionist vision, which maintains that prostitution is a form of exploitation and of sexual violence committed primarily against women, and in that sense, it should be decriminalized for women but criminalize customers and pimps. On the other hand, the “pro-sex work” vision, arguing that "sex work" is a choice and it is a job like any other, deserves to be decriminalized completely, even for customers and pimps. Our approach was used essentially to get the subjective visions, that might be more nuanced than what we hear in the writings and debates on the subject, a way of giving a voice to those women we do not hear a lot about. The theoretical framework that underlies our analysis is the intersection of discrimination. The main sources of discrimination that emerged in our sample were those of age, social and economic status and ethnicity, for one person. Those sources of vulnerabilities increased the probabilities for women to go toward those practices, to stay in it and to return after a break, sometimes to meet their basic needs, to be able to pay for drugs or to reimburse some debts and/or afford luxury. The aim of the study is to discover and understand the perception of women regarding their experience in various forms of indoor remunerated sexual activities. To achieve this, we describe, understand and analyze the path that led women into engaging in remunerated sexual activities; identify and understand their journey and experiences based on their type of practice, more or less intense, more or less varied and more or less extended in time, of remunerated sexual activities and finally, place their perspective on the continuum of the social debate surrounding the phenomenon, whether it is more a way to exploit women versus a form of work like any other or somewhere in between, where we could locate the perspectives of women on a continuum where many of them found their way into more nuanced visions of their reality. A qualitative methodology was used where semi-structured interviews were conducted. It allows to discover nuanced perspectives among them, and for others, to validate their perspective among the polarized visions we often hear in the actual debates and studies, meaning some of them situate their realities more in a form of sexual exploitation and others in a common form of work.

Exploring factors that influence beginning teachers’ self-efficacy to teach in diverse classrooms

Haider, Fizza 01 December 2021 (has links)
Teacher self-efficacy for teaching in diverse classrooms is an important factor in the successful implementation of inclusion. Quantitative examinations of teacher self-efficacy have found the construct to be correlated with both contextual and teacher-related factors. In-depth qualitative exploration into type, quality, and nature of experiences that shape teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs is scarce. This research aimed to qualitatively examine potential sources of teacher self-efficacy and generate an explanation for the complex growth pattern it follows during the early years of practice. Seventy-eight beginning teachers across Canada (i.e., graduating teacher candidates and new teachers who are in the first three years of their practice) participated in 139 semi-structured interviews conducted over four years to address questions regarding the factors and experiences that influence their self-efficacy or confidence to teach in diverse classrooms. Ten factors which either had a positive or negative connotation emerged from a qualitative content analysis of their interviews. The Positive-Negative Experiences Balance (PNEB) model was conceptualized to understand and represent how these ten factors interactively, simultaneously, and collectively influence the development of beginning teachers’ self-efficacy for inclusive practice in the initial years of their careers. Through a comparison of frequency counts of codes, it was noted that beginning teachers differentially relied on experiential factors to enhance their self-efficacy when they were graduating, or were in the first three years of their teaching. The results are discussed in light of the relevant extant research. Implications of these results for teacher education programs and school leadership are also shared. / Graduate
