Ancient quarrels and current perspectives in the relationship between poetry and philosophyVerwey, Len 11 1900 (has links)
Beginning with Plato's expulsion of the poets in the Republic, this dissertation
looks at the often hostile, yet also symbiotic, relationship between poetry and
philosophy. Aristotle's 'response' to Plato is regarded as a significant origin of
literary theory. Nietzsche's critique of Western philosophy as being an attempt to
suppress its own metaphoricity, leads to a revaluation of truth and consequently
of the privileging of philosophy over poetry. Post-structuralism sometimes
overemphasizes this constitutive force of metaphoricity, at the expense of
conceptual modes. However, Derrida's notion of philosophy as play retains a
balance between concept and metaphor: there is no attempt to transcendentally
ground philosophy, but neither is it reduced to a merely metaphorical discourse.
Finally, Wittgenstein's notion of meaning as determined by use can help us
distinguish pragmatically between poetry and philosophy by looking at the
contexts in which they function. / English Studies / M.A. (English)

The portrayal of women in Xitsonga literature with special reference to South African novels, poems and proverbsMachaba, Rirhandzu Lillian 09 1900 (has links)
The new dawn that brought about democracy in South Africa in 1994 and the social and political experiences have since changed the expectations of women’s roles in society. Literature is the important part of this experience because it mirrors and interprets the experience from the point of view of those who write about it. This study, therefore, attempts to examine the image of women in Xitsonga literature, to investigate whether there is a link in the expected cultural roles of Vatsonga women and their roles as characters in Xitsonga literature; and whether there is a shift in the way women characters are portrayed to represent the current social and political reality.
The study employs African feminist literary criticism as a tool in critically analysing the various literary genres. It also adopts purposive sampling of Xitsonga novels, poetry and proverbs that have women characters in them and analyse how these women characters have been portrayed. The naming of female characters is examined in relation to their roles in the texts and the titles of the texts are also investigated and critically analysed to establish whether they portray any gender stereotypes. The themes of the selected texts are also examined to establish if there is any gender biasness. Both male and female-authored texts have been investigated to explore whether male authors depict women differently from their female counterparts.
The study concludes that there is gender-biasness in the manner in which women characters are depicted that do not reflect the current political and social order, however, some women authors, unlike their male counterparts do not reflect gender-biasness in their depiction of female characters. / African Languages / D. Aspects of a deconstructive study of AM Maphumulo's poetryNdlovu, Bheka Stanley 02 1900 (has links)
This research examines the poetry of A.M Maphumulo by utilising selected strategies from the deconstructive literary theory. The exploration involves a critical analysis and application of deconstruction to isiZulu poetry, and more specifically to a selection of Maphumulo’s poems. This research shows that deconstruction does not constitute a traditional analysis of poetry, but that the theory attempts to interplay various meanings at the same time without giving prominence to a singular meaning. Perceptions regarding deconstruction are highlighted such as that the readings merely dismantle creative works without contributing much to its value. This research sets out to prove this observation wrong by first providing a deconstructive thematic reading of two themes of Maphumulo; that of death and education. Furthermore, the deconstruction approach is outlined and applied with specific attention to the multiplicity of meaning in Maphumulo’s poetry. Intertextuality and influence are also examined as it is evident that the poet Maphumulo was influence by his culture, the Bible and nature, amongst other influences. It is shown how the poet synthesises different influences and styles of poetry into a new original mode. Although this research focuses on selected aspects of the deconstructive procedure in analysing isiZulu texts, it is finally recommended that more research should be effected on deconstruction, and especially on Maphumulo’s poetry. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

In this study, we propose a renewed understanding of Dante Alighieri¿s work based on the hypothesis that his first book, the Vita Nova, offers a representation of the irruption of modern lyric. Initially, we try to determine the meaning of this irruption (and, then, of this representation) inspired by Walter Benjamin¿s theory of origin (Ursprung). After, we insist on the pertinence of a reconstruction of the concept of modernity, since its first formulations still in the Middle Ages, as we have Dante¿s work in view, and more specifically the Vita Nova. Finally, we analyze the Vita Nova from four fundamental figures it bequeaths ¿ not just as thematic axes, but as elements of formalization ¿ to the forthcoming lyric: Memory, Love, Secret, Death / Doutorado / Literatura Geral e Comparada / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Like any text, the epigrams of the Latin poet Martial (c. A.D. 38 ¿ c. 104) are composed by the absorption and assimilation of other texts, with which they dialogue and to which they allude in very different ways and in very different mechanisms. When these allusions or intertexts incorporate into the Martial¿s texts elements of form or content brought from the texts alluded, they create new meanings in the poet¿s epigrams, so that reading grows richer and gripping. At the same time, the reading of the texts alluded ¿ the models ¿ is also enriched and influenced by the epigrams. In this thesis, we study the intertextual relationships between the Martial¿s epigrams and the works of the Latin poets Catullus, Virgil and Ovid; then, we try to show how the poet from Bilbilis incorporated into his texts borrowed material from those authors and how that material enriches the reading of all texts involved with new meaning / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística
