The work that follows seeks to elucidate the social history of rock and roll musical genre in Brazil. This genre has been treated with indifference by critics and historians of popular music, reducing its social history the seemingly random waves of popularity, marked by the “Jovem Guarda” and the emergence of “BRock” in the 1980s. The treatment of the rock and roll produced in Brazil in the 1970s is residual, including the academy, contributing to the building of an undersized image of the musical production from that period. The research begins with a reconstruction of the Brazilian popular music production course of the 1960s, in which is included the incipient Brazilian rock in order to understand how this foreign genre is received and interacts with other popular genres which it contended with. A track analysis based on the rock band “A Bolha” (The Bubble), that had to face the lack of space for the genre as well as the lack of interest of the media and the music industry throughout the 70’s follows hereupon. It is intended to uncover the existing social structures constricting the development of the genre in that period. That was a time marked by restrictions on civil rights due to the military regime that ruled the country from 1964 to 1985, which was undoubtedly a key factor for shaping the musical production field of those years. The 1970s saw the consolidation of Brazilian popular music as the dominant musical genre owing to, among other factors, the prestigie accumulated by the Brasilian Pop Music Festivals shown on TV at that time, the facing off agaisnt the political regime adopted by the artists that joined it in, and yet, the acceptance of review critics and public consumers for their greater affinity with former Brazilian musical traditions. Through a structural analysis of the music production field to the Bourdieusian way, I intend to place the tax agents of the constitution of social representation built around the rock and roll genre in Brazil, so that you can understand how this segment, which threatened the MPB area in the mid-1960s, was to occupy only the channels and independent spaces of cultural production that make up the so-called "underground scene."

In this project, I investigate the use of the cello in Brazilian popular music, taking as reference the work of the cellist Jaques Morelenbaum (also arranger and composer), who has the longest and most relevant career in this specialty in Brazil. Through analyzes of selected performances of this artist in audio and video recordings, I discuss the differences and similarities between cello performance practices in the fields of classical music, popular music and their intersections. In his style of performance, I observe the use of the cello in both bow and pizzicato performing the role of bass line, main melodic lines and secondary contrapuntal lines, in which elements of performance practices of Brazilian music (popular and erudite) and jazz are noticeable, specially a strong influence of the style of João Gilberto, a major symbol of Bossa Nova. I also point out strategies, adaptations and instrumental emulations on the cello, taking into account the idiomatic language of the instrument, while raising interpretive elements that allow us a better understanding of its context and performance.

Three essays in the economics of music: reputation and success of musicians

Ceulemans, Cédric 10 July 2013 (has links)
The music industry is a market of superstars, that is a market where a relatively small number of people earn enormous amounts of money and dominate the activity in which they engage (Rosen,1981). Theories on the superstars phenomenon suggest that luck (Adler, 1985) or talent (Rosen, 1981) are the driving forces behind success. Thus, the “superstars models” left performers with no “active” role: successful artists are either endowed with an innate talent far above the average or are extremely lucky. However, all musicians (talented or not; lucky or not) take continuously decisions that affect their career. Chapter 1 and 2 of this dissertation analyze in details some of these decisions and their influence on success.
Chapter 1, Rock Bands: Matching, Recording & Work Organization,4 investigates the impact of partnerships, matching, and work organization on the success of rock musicians using a unique database of 1,494 albums released between 1970 and 2004. We show that rock bands differ in their work organization because the agreements between the members of band are different. These agreements can be seen as implicit contracts. Drawing on this observation, we develop a model where agents (musicians) with different levels of creativity match (to form a band) and produce a joint output (a song). We show that the way agents match (positively or negatively) is correlated with success and depends on the (in)completeness of contracts. The theoretical results are supported by the data.
Chapter 2, Musical Characteristics and Success in Commercial Music, analyzes the relationship between musical characteristics, that can objectively be measured, and different types of success (commercial success, critical success, and success assessed by music lovers). We show that the strength and the direction (positive or negative) of the relationship between success and musical characteristics vary with the measure of success.
The third chapter goes in a slightly different direction than the two others as it deals with long term reputation of composers rather than commercial success of pop-rock musicians. Chapter 3, The Formation of the Canons of the Baroque Music, analyzes the reputation of baroque composers over time. The dataset makes it possible to describe the evolution of composers’ reputation and of the baroque canon. The entries in seven important musical dictionaries written between 1790 and 2000 are used to measure reputations. We provide evidence that a consensus exists between musicologists, who often rely on their predecessors’ work.

References:
Adler, M. (1985). Stardom and talent. 'n Missiologiese evaluering van 'n aantal musiekvideos

De Bruyn, Jacob Philippus Johannes 11 1900 (has links)
Hierdie videos speel veral 'n vemame rol by die jeug as sub-kultuurgroep. / Missiology / D.Th. (Missiology)

"Insh Allah, you'll find your way" : En innehållsanalys av muslimsk popmusik

Jazzar, Lucinda January 2016 (has links)
This paper has three aims: to identify how Islam and Muslims are pictured in Muslim popular music, to examine if the message has been adjusted dependig on the listener, and if the music can be used in the construction of identities. To achieve this aim, music by the artists Sami Yusuf and Maher Zain have been analyzed. The research questions are; which images of Islam and Muslims are being portrayed through the music of Sami Yusuf and Maher Zain? Are there any differences in the images and the messages depending on who the listener is? What meaning can the music have for the constuction of individual and collective forms of identity? The material consists of 52 song lyrics which have been studied using the method of content analysis. The data were analyzed in relation to Mediatization Theory as described by Hjarvard, Schofield Clark and Lövheim, as well as Ammerman's theory on identity and religion. The result of the study shows that Muslim popular music portray Islam as a religion of love that promotes peace. According to the themes that were identified Muslims are pictured as people who have gone through hardships, who have left their old life behind them and found inner peace with the help of Allah. Muslims are portrayed as people who love their families and the Prophet Muhammad, and they worship Allah and believe in an afterlife. Only small differences in the music's message depending on the receiver were found. One difference is that songs in English tend to contain a smaller amount of references to religion than songs that are sung in for example Arabic. The result show that muslim popular music can help the construction of identities because it portrays a different kind of image of Islam compared to the negative image portrayed by the media. The music also provides the listener with biographical stories to identify with and invities people to Islam. Moreover, the songs challenge both Western modernity and traditional Islam.

Sångundervisning i olika genrer : En jämförande studie av sångundervisning inom klassisk sång och pop-sång / Singing Education in Different Genres : A comparative study of singing education in the classical and popular music traditions

Proba, Rebecca January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how voice teachers, when following the Classical and Popular vocal traditions, approach private singing, and how they design the instruction. Data has been collected through interviews with four voice teachers, all of whom are active at the post-secondary school level. Two of the informants primarily teach the Classical tradition, while the other two teach the Popular music tradition. The interview form used was the qualitative interview, with open follow-up questions. The analysis was performed from a perspective of design theory. The result shows that the resources used by the informants are similar regardless of genre. Emphasis is placed on the ability to design the conditions for learning in the encounter of each individual student. The result also shows that vocabulary varies according to genre, and that the difference in preferred sound between genres leads to differences in methods, as well as musical focus. The discussion reflects on the ideals of the two genres, and how they affect the transfer of knowledge.

Over recent years, Brooklyn has become a global epicenter for the production of alternative popular music known as « indie music ». Using ethnographic methods, this thesis examines the role of mediators in the definition of the socio-musical network of the Brooklyn’s indie music scene in New York. It emphasizes the way in which, historically, Williamsburg has come to be an important neighboorhood for musicians and how hipsters, as a community, use different practices in order to manage a hegemonic relationship with the majors. At the center of this analysis is a discussion of the « do it yourself » ethic and the place of New York in the world, musically speaking. Finally, the way some medias define and structure the musical field is also of a part of the analysis.

Skupinová hra v hudební výchově Využití hudebně výrazových prostředků moderní populární hudby v činnostní hudební výchově / Group Performance in Music Education Use of Epressive Means of Modern Popular Music in Music Education

Vepřek, Jan January 2011 (has links)
Modern popular music is worldwide spread and it is developing rapidly. Therefore it is important for the music teachers to react to this fact. They should offer students the possibility to find their bearings in the great amount of newly developing popular music and also in the new expressive means of music. Of course, this can be done through lectures and suited listening, but I argue that both these activities should be accompanied by learning-by-doing musical activity, because it gives the students the opportunity of practicing the new information and of understanding it in context. My thesis therefore focuses on this issue. It deals with the possibilities of implementing group music performance using the expressive means of modern popular music in music education. It could also be used as a set of practical advices for creating suitable music arrangements for students. The author defines key terms, most important of which are undoubtedly the concept of modern popular music and defining the group of students. The second chapter lists suitable instruments and their description. It focuses on instruments suitable for participating in the rhythmic section. We use some of the Orff instruments as well as some other user-friendly instruments. The third chapter deals with playing in a group in music...
