Historie, fikce a ideologie: analýza románu Salaì má pochyby / History, Fiction and Ideology: Analysis of the Novel "The doubts of Salai"

This thesis analyzes the historical novel The Doubts of Salaí in terms of purpose, which the authors have clearly declared in the study attached to the novel. This purpose is both to ridicule the excessive confidence in the pulp and obvious fakes, and literary demythologization of myths - associated primarily with the Pope Alexander VI., Leonardo da Vinci, renaissance humanists or Tacit's Germania - which have settled in the historical discourse. Thus the thesis, through the narratological analysis, examines the procedures that are used within these purposes, and notes the implications for theories of the historical and literary discourses relationship. Plea-bargaining and sentencing agreement is a worldwide phenomenon. Most of the jurisdictions more particularly in the so-called developed countries have adopted and incorporated into their criminal justice system the concept of plea-bargaining and sentence agreement. Same has properly been legislated and documented. In the United States for example, more than 80 per cent of the criminal matters are disposed of through plea-bargaining between the prosecution authority and the defendants. This system of disposing of criminal matters through plea-bargaining and sentence agreement has saved states resources and saved courts’ time. Although the system causes the accused to face a dilemma whenever he or she is supposed to make a choice between waiving his or her constitutional right to trial and pleading guilty. The subject matter of master disseration is rational behavior. Its dedicated to the following questions: what kind of behavior can be named “rational”, and how we can model it in strict logical terms (and then in program languages). These questions were raised earlier in Artificial Intelligence researches, and very soon the modeling of human behavior for computers encounters some problems. The general name of these problems is the frame problem.The main aim of the research work is solution of the frame problem from deontic logic point of view. I find this formalism the most suitable for investigation of human (rational) behavior. The work contain historical consideration of the frame problem and its strict definition in terms of basic formalism, as interconnection of two correlated problems: ramification problem and qualification problem. The ramification problem is given an option to solve it by extending the basic formalism (with adding of notion of state constraints, influence information and, most importantly, the laws of causal relationships). To solve the problem of qualification the formalism is extended by introducing possible worlds semantic. We consider the properties of this model and offers a solution to the problem of qualification through valuation by the expectation degree, and introducing normative modal operators on this basis. / Общая тема магистерской диссертации - рациональное поведение. Рассмотрение последнего в рамках Искусственного Интеллекта с точки зрения моделирования в строгих логических терминах (для последующего воспроизведения в языках программирования) привело к выявлению ряда трудностей. Общее название им - проблема фреймов. Главная цель данной работы - решение проблемы фреймов с точки зрения логики деонтических модальностей. В диссертации проводится историческое рассмотрение проблемы фреймов, дается строгое её определение для введенного базового формализма (как двух взаимосвязанных проблем — проблемы ветвлений и проблемы квалификации). Рассматривается проблема ветвлений, дается вариант её решения за счет расширения базового формализма (добавляются понятия ограничений состояний, информации о влияниях, и, самое главное, законов причинных связей). Рассматривается проблема квалификации, базовый формализм расширяется посредством введения для него семантики возможных миров, рассматриваются свойства этой модели и предлагается вариант решения проблемы квалификации за счет оценки по степени ожидаемости, и вводящихся на этой основе модальных нормативных операторов.

BEST POSSIBLE SELF IN REAL-WORLD CLASS SETTINGS: WHAT WORKS OR NOT AND IMPLICATIONS

<p>Best possible self (BPS) is one of the most widely used positive psychology interventions shown in the laboratory to effectively improve participants’ overall well-being in both the short- and long-term. However, limited research has been conducted in real-world contexts. This dissertation aims to explore the practical application of BPS integrated into the instructional design for reflective activities in real-world class settings. Three papers were included in this dissertation conducted in both undergraduate (preservice teachers) and graduate (novice instructional designers) classes: the first paper examined BPS’s effects in promoting preservice teachers’ overall well-being through a quantitative method; the second paper measured BPS’s effects in improving preservice teachers’ attitudes towards technology integration through a quantitative approach; the third paper explored novice instructional designers’ attitudes towards BPS and the relationships with their well-being (gains) and personality through mixed methods. </p> <p>The first paper (chapter 2) examined BPS’s long-term effects in improving participants’ overall well-being compared with the control group through a quasi-experimental design. Results from a 2 × 3 mixed ANOVA indicate that BPS did not significantly improve the participants’ well-being over time compared with the control group. In fact, the control group performed better than treatment one month after the intervention. This result aligns with findings of well-being during COVID-19. </p> <p>The second paper (chapter 3) measured BPS’s effect in improving preservice teachers’ attitudes towards technology integration. Even though the results show that BPS did not improve participants’ attitudes towards technology integration statistically significantly compared with the control group (possibly because of impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic), the results are promising because: first, inside the treatment group, the result shows BPS improved participants’ attitudes significantly; second, under the pandemic, literature reported that BPS was not as effective as in normal situations; however, the activities in the control group might be more effective under the pandemic.</p> <p>The third paper (chapter 4) explored novice instructional designers’ attitudes towards BPS and the relationship between attitudes, well-being, and personality. Pearson correlation results show significant correlations among attitudes, subjective well-being (gains), and openness to experience. In addition, the results from open-ended questions confirmed participants’ positive attitudes towards the BPS. Taken together, the findings from three papers contribute to the practical application of BPS in real-world class settings, especially under the unique pandemic situation. More studies are needed to explore the application of positive psychology interventions in instructional design in real-world settings.</p>

The Fictional World of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea: Emic and Etic Perspectives on its Worldbuilding

Reading is a past time activity that is popular all around the world. It is something thathelps us escape reality and put our focus elsewhere. When immersing yourself in afictional world, it can be intriguing to think of how it was created. When we think ofworld-building, we think especially of fantasy works such as The Lord of The Rings orSF classics such as Dune takes place. But what about fictional worlds that are closer tothe world known by its readers? Ernest Hemingway based his novel The Old Man andThe Sea on the actual world, which makes it believable and relatable. Most previousstudiesfocus on underlying meanings of the narrative, on metaphors orstylistic choices.It is a novel that is narratively limited to one man and a fish out in the open ocean, butit still feels as if the world surrounding them is vast. Hemingway was known for usinga simple style when creating his fictional worlds and this essay will try to comprehendhow he managed to create such an intricate world by following one simple fishermanand his struggle with the biggest fish of his life. In this essay I will argue that the useof an emic point of view – using the perception of the protagonist Santiago – invitesthe reader to recenter to one point in this vast world, while the occasional intrusion ofan etic perspective establishes a connection between the narrator and reader thatlocalizes Santiago’s point of view.

This thesis aims to explore possible alternatives to the current neoliberal development by developing, implementing, and analyzing one possible alternative way of framing participation. Working under the name of Fluke, I have co-developed a research project using participatory action research from the bottom-up that creates a more engaging and inclusive urban co-production process using play and games. By exploring this process from a practical perspective, I argue that playful co-design processes applied at the local scale have potential to allow people opportunities to ensure what Lefebvre calls the ‘right to the city’ — their right to be not only consumers, but also their right to become a co-producer of urban space.  Situating our action research in our student housing neighborhood of Stockholm, Sweden, I hope to articulate that urban co-design processes have the potential to explore the boundless possible urban futures in an inclusive manner. Within our process, we developed playful urban planning tools like a place analysis Easter Egg Hunt, a playful visioning workshop, and a place prototyping game. Through this five-month period, over 300 residents participated in different manners with the co-creation of a temporary festival exploring the possibilities of urban space: Lappis Summer Dream Day. Through this participatory exploration, we co-produce alternative valuations of urban space that fulfill social and creative needs, not just the needs of capital, to co-create what Hou (2018) calls the ‘new commons’.

L2 Anxiety In Spanish-speaking Adult Esl Populations: Possible Causes And Cultural Influences

Anxiety has been identified as a plausible factor affecting second language (L2) acquisition. However, more research is needed on how anxiety may influence Spanish-speaking adult English as a Second Language (ESL) populations. Determining precisely what causes anxiety in Spanish-speaking adult ESL populations should be of interest not only to L2 researchers but also to ESL instructors who may have adult Spanish-speaking English language learners (ELLs) in their classes. This study researched L2 anxiety in Spanish-speaking adult ESL learners. Specifically, it considered possible causes and cultural influences of L2 anxiety in 10 Spanish-speaking adult ESL students at a university English language institute (ELI). Participants were given a choice of completing an English or Spanish version of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and then participated in follow-up interviews. Results were documented and evaluated. A total of 14 causes of L2 anxiety were identified, including incompatible goals, using English in professional contexts, the native country, and the need for error correction. Finally, contrary to the literature, collaborative group work was found to cause L2 anxiety in Spanish-speaking adult ESL students enrolled at a language institute.

I denna uppsats analyseras spelen Howling Dogs och 16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds ur ett narratologiskt perspektiv. Huvuddelen av analysen fokuserar på hur hypertextens mediala förhållanden påverkar relationen mellan spelaren och narrativet samt på förhållandet mellan berättare och lyssnarinstans. Analysen baserar sig på metoder med utgångspunkt i possible worlds theory, formulerat av Alice Bell. Uppsatsen exemplifierar hur man går till väga i analys av texter med ett starkt deiktiskt förhållande mellan texten och läsaren. Syftet är att undersöka existerande metoder och att förbättra dem, tillika en, möjligtvis naiv, förhoppning om att komma ett steg närmare ett större litteraturvetenskapligt intresse gällande vad spel kan tillföra litteraturvetenskapen. / This essay contains narratological analyses of the games Howling Dogs and 16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds. The analyses are focused on the hypertext’s medial impact on the relations between user and narrative as well as narrator and narratee. The work is based on methods using possible worlds theory, created by theorists such as Alice Bell. A main purpose here is to further exemplify how to analyze texts having a deictic effect between themselves self and their readers. The purpose here is thus to test existing methods and further develop them. This purpose is also motivated by a, possibly naïve, hope of getting one step closer to a wider acknowledgement of how games can contribute to the subject of literature.
