O presente estudo trata das fotografias resultantes da expedição realizada pelo bávaro Christoph Albert Frisch (1840 1918), na extensão brasileira do rio Solimões a pedido da Casa de Leuzinger, ativa cidade do Rio de Janeiro durante o início da segunda metade do século XIX e interessada na comercialização de imagens do exótico e do longínquo para a venda, principalmente a viajantes estrangeiros. O objetivo deste trabalho foi a investigação de indícios, nas fotografias, de elementos do discurso colonial que enfatizam a inferioridade racial do outro por meio de estereótipos que fixam identidades e legitimam, apoiam-se e contribuem para a manutenção dessa dominação. Além disso, o presente trabalho pretende dimensionar as fotografias analisadas com o imaginário de hipérboles e riquezas que, desde os primeiros relatos de europeus sobre a Amazônia, direcionaram as representações sobre a ela. Tais representações reverberaram na Exposição Universal de Paris, em 1867, onde o Brasil apresentou-se como de fornecedor de matérias primas visando à atração de investimentos estrangeiros. Em nossa investigação, valemo-nos das fotografias como fonte principal, bem como o catálogo produzido pela Casa Leuzinger para acompanhar as fotografias de Frisch. / The present study deals with the photographs resulting from the expedition carried out by the Bavarian Christoph Albert Frisch (1840-1918) in the Brazilian extension of the Solimões River at the request of the Leuzinger House of photographies, an active city of Rio de Janeiro during the beginning of the second half of the 19th century. interested in commercializing images of the exotic and distant for sale, mainly to foreign travelers. The objective of this work was to investigate evidence in the photographs of elements of colonial discourse that emphasize the racial inferiority of the \"other\" through stereotypes that establish identities and legitimize, support and contribute to the maintenance of domination. In addition, the present work intends to scale the analyzed photographs with the imagery of hyperboles and riches that, since the first reports of Europeans about the Amazon, directed the representations about it. Such representations reverberated at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867, where Brazil presented itself as a supplier of raw materials to attract foreign investment. La poétique de l’étrangeté est l’une des expressions d’un “retour au corps” du roman contemporain, par lequel celui-ci interroge sa propre capacité à représenter le monde social. Dans l’oeuvre de Suzette Mayr, de Marie NDiaye et de Yoko Tawada, le corps apparaît comme un objet étrange, dont l’évidence naturelle ne va plus de soi. Il est caractérisé par sa malléabilité voire par ses métamorphoses ; en même temps, il porte les marques des catégories de la domination. La poétique de l’étrangeté peut être interprétée comme une traduction littéraire du tournant théorique « matérialiste queer », qui s’efforce de penser à la fois la dynamique du pouvoir à partir de la production des subjectivités et le caractère structurel de la domination à partir de bases économiques. Au sein du corpus, le corps est à la fois « dénaturalisé » et ressaisi comme le signe d’une histoire intersectionnelle, déployée par le processus narratif. Il n’est pas tant l’expression d’une vérité de l’identité que la construction fictionnelle d’un « point de vue situé ». C’est pourquoi son étrangeté est indissociable de sa valeur narrative : c’est à partir d’un corps fictif que s’écrit une certaine perception du monde, que se redéfinissent les formes romanesques, et que se crée un usage « étrange » de la langue. Ces mutations esthétiques rendent compte, dans des termes propres au corpus, d’une possible rupture épistémique, à partir de laquelle la nature même du corps se voit réévaluée. En s’appuyant sur un dialogue entre la théorie et la fiction, qui prend source dans leur étrangeté réciproque, il s’agit d’ouvrir quelques pistes de réflexion sur l’imaginaire contemporain du corps. Par-là, c’est aussi une certaine reconfiguration littéraire du monde social qui est impliquée. / The poetics of strangeness is one of the expressions of a “return to the body” in contemporary fiction, a return through which fiction questions its own ability to depict society accurately. In the works of Suzette Mayr, Marie NDiaye and Yoko Tawada, the body appears as a strange object, the natural evidence of which can no longer be taken for granted. Its main characteristics are its plasticity, or even its tendency towards metamorphosis, and the fact that it bears the signs of domination. The poetics of strangeness can be viewed as the literary translation of the “queer materialist” turn operated in feminist studies to show how the production of subjectivity affects the dynamics of power while at the same time exposing the economically-determined, structural forms of domination. In the texts under study, the body is de-naturalized and simultaneously used as the sign of an intersectional history that shapes the narrative process. It is not so much the expression of a true identity as the fictional construction of a “situated standpoint”. That is why its strangeness cannot be separated from its narrative value : the description of a fictitious body allows to capture a certain perception of the world, to redefine narrative models, to create a “strange” use of language. These aesthetic mutations reflect, in terms proper to our corpus, a possible epistemological rupture, that leads to the reevaluation of the very “nature” of the body. Through a dialogue between theory and fiction based on their reciprocal strangeness, this thesis seeks to offer new perspectives on contemporary representations of the body and shed light on the literary reconfiguration of the social world it entails.

Chapter 4 considers the gendering of the colonised nation and the maternalisation of roots, drawing on theories of nationalism as a gendered discourse. Chapter 5 examines the issue of hybridity and the relationship between Koreanness and Whiteness, which are related to the notions of third space, mimicry and passing. Linked to studies of national division, reunification and family separation, Chapter 6 looks at the adopted Koreans as symbols of a fractured and fragmented nation. Chapter 7 focuses on the emergence of a global Korean community, with regards to theories of globalisation, diasporas and transnationalism. Canadian Literatures Beyond the Colour Line: Re-Reading the Category of South-Asian Canadian LiteratureLobb, Diana Frances January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines current academic approaches to reading South Asian-Canadian literature as a multicultural “other” to Canadian national literature and proposes an alternative reading strategy that allows for these texts to be read within a framework of South Asian diasporic subjectivities situated specifically at the Canadian location. Shifting from the idea that “Canada” names a particular national identity and national literary culture to the idea that “Canada” names a particular geographic terrain at which different cultural, social, and historical vectors intersect and are creolized allows for a more nuanced reading of South Asian-Canadian literature, both in terms of its relationship to the complex history of the South Asian diaspora and in terms of the complex history of South Asian encounters with the Canadian space. Reading prose, poetry, drama, and theatrical institutions as locations where a specifically South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity is reflected, I am able to map a range of individual negotiations among the cultural vector of the “ancestral” past, the cultural vector of the influence of European colonialism, and the cultural vector of this place that demonstrate that the negotiation of South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity and its reflection in literature cannot be understood as producing a homogenous or “authentic” cultural identity. Instead, the literary expression of South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity argues that the outcome of negotiations between cultural vectors that take place in this location are as unique as the individuals who undertake those negotiations. These individual negotiations, I argue, need to be read collectively to trace out a continuum of possible expressions of South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity, a continuum that emphasizes that the processes of negotiation are on-going and flexible. This dissertation challenges the assumption that Canadian literature can be contained within the limits of a Canadian nationalist mythology or ethnography. Instead of the literature of the Canadian “nation” or the Canadian “people,” Canadian literature is best understood as the literature produced in this location by all the “minority” populations, including the dominant “minority.” Reading Canadian literature, then, is reading the differential relationships to history and community that occur in this place and which are inscribed in these collectively Canadian texts.

Ce travail de recherche propose une lecture de l’œuvre littéraire de l’écrivain sarde Sergio Atzeni selon une perspective postcoloniale. Sergio Atzeni étant une personnalité novatrice dans le panorama littéraire de la Sardaigne contemporaine, nous l’avons choisi du fait que sa production – narrative, poétique et critique – se prête bien à une analyse utilisant les critères des études postcoloniales. Nous avons ainsi développé notre discours autour de trois parties : la première est consacrée à repérer, au sein des Postcolonial Studies, une série de concepts-clés qui nous ont paru les plus pertinents pour notre étude. Ces thèmes sont repris et explorés lors de la deuxième partie, qui constitue le centre de notre travail et qui porte sur une étude approfondie de la postcolonialité thématique de notre auteur. Notre but a été de montrer qu’un certain nombre de questions et de motifs qu’Atzeni aborde dans ses textes littéraires et critiques sont éclairés par une lecture de type postcolonial. La troisième et dernière partie porte sur la traduction, Atzeni ayant été également un traducteur. Nous nous sommes penchée sur la conception de l’écriture de l’auteur, avant même d’examiner sa position traductive. Après ces réflexions initiales d’ordre théorique, nous avons analysé un premier cas de traduction : celui du roman Texaco, de Patrick Chamoiseau, qu’Atzeni a traduit en 1994. Notre travail de recherche se termine par une analyse des traductions françaises des ouvrages d’Atzeni. / Our research tries to read the literary work of the Sardinian writer Sergio Atzeni according to a postcolonial perspective. Sergio Atzeni was a pioneer personality in the panorama of Sardinian contemporary literature and we have chosen him because his narrative, poetic and critical work can be analyzed following the approach of the Postcolonial Studies movement. Our study is divided into 3 parts: the first one aims at analysing in the Postcolonial Studies a series of questions appearing relevant for our research. We can mention some topics, such as opposition to dominant power, the concept of Subalternity, Transnationalism, Hybridity, Migration, female representations, and many others. These topics have been examined in the second part, which is the core of our research, dedicated to an extensive study of Atzeni’s thematic Postcoloniality. Our purpose was to show that some questions Atzeni talks about in his literary and critical works lend itself to a Postcolonial reading. The third and last part of our thesis focuses on translation, as Atzeni was also a translator. We looked into his linguistic conceptions, before analyzing his thought concerning his translation activity. After these theoretical considerations, we have analyzed a first translation case, that of Texaco, Patrick Chamoiseau’s novel, translated by Atzeni in 1994. The last part of our research focuses on Atzeni’s French translations.

Previous issue date: 2015-07-14 / Capes / O presente texto é fruto da pesquisa de Mestrado desenvolvida na linha de pesquisa de Formação de Professores e Práticas Pedagógicas do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. A investigação buscou compreender quem são os estudantes evadidos da EJA e o que os leva a se evadirem das escolas do Território Campesino do Município de Caruaru. Objetivou em específico: identificar os perfis das/os estudantes evadidas/os (etnia, gênero, idade, ocupação profissional) da Educação de Jovens e Adultos em Escolas do Campo do Município de Caruaru – PE; identificar e caracterizar as causas da evasão das/dos estudantes da EJA sujeitas/os da pesquisa; identificar e caracterizar a influência do Patriarcado para a evasão das mulheres Sujeitas da pesquisa. A lente teórico-metodológica utilizada para fundamentar o trabalho foi a dos Estudos Pós-Coloniais Latino-Americanos (QUIJANO, 2005, 2007; MIGNOLO, 2005; TUBINO, 2012; WALSH, 2008, 2009, 2010). Diante da lente teórica adotada, tomamos como categorias teóricas centrais da pesquisa: Educação do Campo (ARROYO, 2012; FERNANDES, 2004; CALDART, 2004) e Educação de Jovens e Adultos (PAIVA, 1973; HADDAD, 2001; DI PIERRO, 2010; JANUZZI, 1979; CURY, 2000; ARROYO, 2011; FREIRE, 1978, 1987). O campo da pesquisa foi o Município de Caruaru – PE, que possui maior e mais representativo número de escolas situadas em áreas rurais do interior do estado de Pernambuco. A eleição do Território Campesino se deu pela compreensão de que este espaço é duplamente silenciado pela lógica da Colonialidade e consequentemente as/os jovens e adultas/os da EJA que se evadiram das escolas localizadas neste território. Neste contexto, foram eleitas as duas escolas do Território Campesino de distritos diferentes que tiveram o maior índice de evasão na EJA no ano de 2013. Foram eleitas/os oito Sujeitas/os da pesquisa, quatro de cada distrito, sendo estas/es evadidas/os da EJA em 2013 e que não retornaram aos bancos escolares. A coleta de dados se deu através do levantamento dos índices de evasão nas escolas, questionário de identificação e entrevistas semiestruturadas. No tratamento e na análise dos dados utilizamos a técnica da Análise de Conteúdo (BARDIN, 1977) via Análise Temática (VALLA, 1990). Concluímos que as causas da evasão estão relacionadas a dois elementos: i) aspectos socioeconômicos e culturais; ii) aspectos didático-pedagógicos da sala de aula. Os primeiros evidenciam a influência do trabalho e do Patriarcado (NARVAZ; KOLLER, 2006) para a evasão. Os segundos apontam a ausência de práticas pedagógicas que dialoguem com os saberes Outros que são produzidos neste espaço. / The following text is a result of a Master’s degree research developed in the line of research Teacher Training and Pedagogical Practices of the Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Pernambuco. The study aimed to comprehend who are the students who drop out the Youth and Adults Education courses and which are the reasons why they drop out the Peasantry Territory’s schools of Caruaru - PE. The specific objectives were to identify the profile of the students (ethnicity, gender, age, occupation) who drop out Youth and Adult Education in the city of Caruaru – PE and; to identify and distinguish the causes of these dropouts; identify and distinguish the influence of the Patriarchy on the dropouts of women Subjects of the research. The article’s theoretical background were the Latin-American Postcolonial Studies (QUIJANO, 2005, 2007; MIGNOLO, 2005; TUBINO, 2012; WALSH, 2008, 2009, 2010). Considering this theoretical background, the following theoretical categories were selected Peasantry Education (ARROYO, 2012; FERNANDES, 2004; CALDART, 2004) and Youth and Adult Education (PAIVA, 1973; HADDAD, 2001; DI PIERRO, 2010; JANUZZI, 1979; CURY, 2000; ARROYO, 2011; FREIRE, 1978, 1987). The Data was collected in the city of Caruaru – PE, which has the largest and most representative number of schools in rural areas in the interior of Pernambuco state. The choice of the Peasantry Territory was made for the comprehension that this space is double silenced for the Coloniality logic and consequently the young and adults of Youth and Adult Education who drop out the schools in this territory. In this context, it was elected the two schools in the Peasantry Territory of different districts that had the highest dropout rates in adult education in 2013. Eight collaborators who drop out Youth and Adult Education schools in 2013 were chosen, four of each district; those who drop out school in 2013 and did not return to the school benches. Data collection included the gathering of dropout rates in schools and the application of identification questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The Content Analysis technique (BARDIN, 1977) through Thematic Analysis (VALLA, 1990) were used on the data treatment and analysis. We concluded that the cause of the dropouts are connected to two elements: i) socioeconomic and cultural aspects and; ii) didactic-pedagogical aspects of the classroom. The first ones highlights the influence of work and Patriarchy (NARVAZ & KOLLER, 2006) regarding the dropout rate. The second ones highlights the lack of pedagogical practices that speaks to the Other knowledge that are produced inside this space.

Cette thèse se propose d'interroger l'écriture littéraire de l'esclavage dans une perspective diachronique et comparée entre la France et ses colonies et les États-Unis, et en regard de la construction de la mémoire de l'esclavage transatlantique et de sa transmission. La dimension diachronique vise à éclairer l'écriture contemporaine de l'esclavage, notamment à partir d'un constat initial : plusieurs centaines de témoignages d'esclaves – regroupés sous le terme générique "slave's narrative" – ont été publiés aux États-Unis, plus rarement en Angleterre, à partir du XVIIIe siècle ; aucun texte de ce type n'a été recensé dans la sphère francophone. Une disparité saisissante qui a semblé un signe fort à analyser, posant la question des causes ou de l'origine de cette disparité, mais aussi de ses conséquences sur la mémoire et surtout sur l'écriture de l'esclavage. En effet, la littérature africaine américaine est souvent présentée comme une héritière de ces témoignages. Sous la désignation de « neo-slave narratives », la critique américaine a même réuni et analysé nombre de romans africains-américains portant sur l'esclavage depuis la fin des années 60. Point d'aboutissement de ce travail, l'écriture caribéenne francophone de l'esclavage est ainsi appréhendée au regard de la production africaine-américaine et de sa différence notable quant à l'héritage mémoriel et discursif des slaves' narratives. Constatant leur absence dans le champ critique francophone, il s'agit également de proposer les premiers jalons d'un appareil critique et d'une analyse de l'écriture caribéenne francophone contemporaine de l'esclavage ainsi qu'une terminologie générique : récit d'esclave francophone. / This thesis proposes a two-fold examination of the literary writing of slavery in France and its former colonies, and in the United States, using both a diachronic and comparative approach. It also takes into account the perspective of the construction and transmission of the memory of transatlantic slavery. The diachronic dimension adopted in this work aims to enlighten on the contemporary writing of slavery. Indeed, several hundreds accounts of slaves– known as “slave narratives” – had been published in the United States, more rarely in England, as early as the 18th century, but there were no such narratives in the francophone world. This striking disparity turned out to be a case worth analyzing to find out about its causes, its origins and its consequences on both the memory and the writing of slavery. As a matter of fact, African American literature bears the direct influence of these testimonies. Identified as “neo-slave narratives”, African American novels dealing with slavery have been collected and analyzed by critics since the 1960's. The last part of this dissertation focuses on the Francophone Caribbean writing of slavery. It is examined in comparison with the African American production and the striking difference noted in the historic and discursive heritage of the slave narratives. This lack in the francophone critical field led us to prepare the ground for the analysis and the review of the contemporary Francophone Caribbean writing of slavery, and for a generic expression: francophone slave narratives.
