Organizational Justice And Workplace Deviance: The Role Of Organizational Structure, Powerlessness, And Information Salience

McCardle, Jie Guo 01 January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate both individual and structural factors in predicting workplace deviance. Deviant workplace behavior is a prevailing and costly phenomenon in organizations. It includes a wide range of negative acts conducted by employees to harm the organization and its members. In the first section, I conducted a comprehensive literature review. In the review, I first review the current state of research on the relationship between organizational justice and workplace deviance by presenting the various theoretical frameworks, as well as empirical findings. Next, I summarize existing research patterns and identify research challenges that must be overcome in order to advance our understanding of this topic. Finally, I offer future directions researchers should undertake in justice-deviance research. Specifically, I suggest the development of more comprehensive models that include potential moderators and mediators that may better explain how and why justice judgments can lead to deviant behaviors and when the negative effect is most damaging. In the second section, I developed a theoretical model that proposes the relationship between organizational justice, organizational structure (centralization and organicity), employee perceived powerlessness, information salience about each type of justice, and workplace deviance. In the third section, I tested the model and presented the findings. Results of HLM analysis show that (1) organizational justice, perceived powerlessness, and centralization exert direct effects on workplace deviance, (2) organicity exerts direct effects on justice information salience; (3) perceived powerlessness partially mediates the relationship between centralization and organizational deviance; (4) information salience of procedural justice strengthens the effects of procedural justice on interpersonal deviance. Conclusions are drawn from the theory and findings, highlighting implications for future workplace deviance and organizational behavior research.

Violence, power and participation: Building citizenship in contexts of chronic violence.

Pearce, Jenny V. January 2007 (has links)
Yes / This paper is about civil society participation in two contexts of chronic violence: Colombia and Guatemala. It explores the extent to which civil society organisations can build citizenship in such contexts and simultaneously address violence. It argues that civil society organisations can play a vital role in building citizenship and confronting violent actors and acts of violence. However, in order to address chronic, perpetuating violence and interrupt its transmission through time and space, it is important to clarify the relationship between power and violence. Conventional forms of dominating power correlate with violence. Loss of such power or a bid to gain it can lead to violence, particularly where social constructions of masculinity are affirmed by such behaviour. The paper asks whether the promotion of non-dominating forms of power are needed if we are to tackle the damaging effects on human relationships and progress of willingness to inflict direct physical hurt on the Other. Non-dominating forms of power focus on enhancing everyone¿s power potential and capacity for action and promoting communication. If non-violence and non-dominating power gradually become the social norm, this might enhance citizenship and participation in ways that tackle other forms of violence, such as structural violence.

"Construção e validação de um instrumento para avaliação do sentimento de impotência" / Construction and validation of the instrument for assessment powerlessness

Braga, Cristiane Giffoni 02 April 2004 (has links)
Powerlessness is a concept accepted as clinical focus of nursing practice. The aims of this study were: to develop and test a measure of powerlessness in adult patients; to verify whether powerlessness is a construct distinct from locus of control and to analyse the association between powerlessness and locus of control. Items were developed from the powerless dimensions of the White, Roberts (1993) model and from the defining characteristics of powerlessness according to the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (2002, 2003). Content validity was supported for 23 itens through the rating of six experts following criteria established by Pasquali (1998). Intelligibility test was performed in 25 patients and 21 items were retained. The instrument was tested with 210 adult patients of medical-surgical wards for item selection, reliability and validity. Through item analysis nine items were discarded. The remaining 12 items were tested for reliability and validity. Three subscales generated by factor analysis (Ability to Perform Behaviors, Ability to Make Decisions and Emotional Responses to Personal Control) did not confirm the White, Roberts model, and demonstrated internal consistency ranging from .58 to .85. Total scale alpha was .80. Initial estimates of criterion-related and construct validity were documented with associations between the developed measure and a general statement on personal control perception (p<.000), and correlation with internality scores generated from scores on Health Locus of Control Scale (p=-.33).Items of Health Locus of Control were well discriminated from the powerlessness items through factor analysis, suggesting they are distinct concepts. With refinement the Measure of Powerlessness for Adult Patients will provide a basis for assessing this psychosocial response, definition and evaluating clinical interventions designed to enhance the emotional comfort of adult patients.

Core self-evaluations as a moderator for the effects of role overload and powerlessness on ill-health / Margaretha Elizabeth Bonnet

Bonnet, Margaretha Elizabeth January 2007 (has links)
Employees in the Occupational Risk Division (ORD) of a large petrochemical company experience many difficult situations on a regular basis. This division of the company comprises the emergency services, the security and the occupational health divisions of the company. Even though every precaution is taken to ensure the safety of employees in the company, accidents and incidents do happen. The employees of the ORD are confronted with gruesome accidents, dangerous accident scenes where they have to enter when everyone else is evacuated, and security breeches where they may have to enter and resolve serious conflict situations. The possibility that their work climate may contributed to their mental health status is suggested. It is suspected that the stress of the job affects the mental health of the employees of the OCD, and ways need to be found to reduce these effects. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between core self-evaluations, role overload, powerlessness and health indicators of employees in the ORD of a large petro-chemical company and to determine whether core self-evaluations act as a moderator in the relationship between role overload and powerlessness on the one hand and health indicators on the other hand. A cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of 299 employees from the Occupational Risk Division of the organization. Age, gender and level of education were included as control variables. A comprehensive survey containing the measuring instruments was administrated. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Results obtained indicated that some of the scales were not reliable. Powerlessness was dropped from the analysis and qualitative and quantitative role overload were collapsed into a total overload measure. The results showed that a negative relationship exists between role overload and core self-evaluations. A positive relationship exists between role overload and neuroticism, poor health and depression. Self-esteem, self-efficacy and locus of control are negatively related to neuroticism and health, and neuroticism is positively related to poor health. Depression was predicted by experiences of overload, levels of self-efficacy, locus of control and negative affect (Neuroticism). General health was predicted by experiences of overload, locus of control, neuroticism and the interaction between overload and self-esteem. None of the scales predict medication use to a significant degree. Results further indicated that only self-esteem acts as a moderator in the relationship between role overload and general health, but none of the variables of core self-evaluations act as a moderator between role overload and depression or between role overload and the use of medication. By way of conclusion, recommendations for future research were made. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

To care for patients with drug abuse : Nurses and nursing students experiences and attitudes – a literature review

Jonsson, Paula, Johansson, Jennifer January 2022 (has links)
Background: During recent years there has been an increase of drug use. Except different consequential diseases, drugs can be fatal. Drug abusers are exposed to stigma from healthcare staff and from society. It is important for nurses to have a respectful approach and give individualized care.  Aim: The aim of this literature review is to describe the experiences and attitudes of general nurses and nursing students to provide care for drug abusers in the somatic facility.  Method: The study was conducted as a literature review with a qualitative approach. The data analysis was performed according to Fribergs five steps, and twelve articles were used for the result. Results: The main categories that were found were “knowledge and education to provide a better care” and “challenges of providing care”. The under categories describe experiences and attitudes that were common in the care context.  Conclusion: Gaps in knowledge, negative attitudes and insufficient support were common in the care context. Many nurses experienced a professional failure and powerlessness when providing care for the patients. At the same time many nurses experienced that it was easier to provide care when gaining more knowledge. It was also important for the nurses to receive support from their workplace and to have distinct guidelines

Närståendes upplevelse av besöksförbudet och besöksrestriktioner på särskilt boende för äldre under covid-19 pandemin- en kvalitativ intervjustudie / Relatives experiences of the restraining order and visit restrictions on nursing homes during the covid-19 pandemic - a qualitative interview study

Carlsson, Anna, Erkstam, Charlotta January 2021 (has links)

Childhood Iconography in Humanitarian Aid: A comparative analysis to understand the academic discourse generated by visual representations of suffering children : The Use of Childhood Iconography in Humanitarian Aid

Dupraz, Emma January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims at providing a literature review of the academic debate regarding the use of childhood iconography in the humanitarian sector. This topic is not new and has been broadly discussed by academics since decades. Therefore, by using the alreadyexisting literature on the subject, this paper provides an in-depth understanding of the main arguments and controversies that have been made regarding the use of such images in the humanitarian field. In order to do so, it analyzes two famous pictures which produced considerable discussion in the research field: “The Struggling Girl” taken by Kevin Carter in South Sudan, in 1993 and “Alan Kurdi” photographed on a Turkish beach by Nilüfer Demir, in 2015. Overall, the study of the discourses generated by these two photographs exemplifies the diverging opinions of scholars on the topic and sheds light on the power relations and stigmas that persist within the humanitarian sector.

Nolet, Anne-Marie 07 1900 (has links)
This study aims at understanding feelings of powerlessness of the helper and its place in the development of the therapeutic alliance with youths. The workers perceptions about the feeling of powerlessness and the possible consequences it has on their practice are analyzed. A number of solutions are proposed, based on strategies developed by workers. With a qualitative methodology, the twenty-five interviews from the research «Alliance building interventions with youth offenders», conducted by Louis-Georges Cournoyer, professor at the University of Montreal’s School of Criminology, are used. In order to complete this data, a focus group was held with community workers. The therapeutic alliance ruptures, who is mediated by team’s support and worker’s self-perceived role and control, can engender the feeling of powerlesness. This feeling might lead to a positive self-questioning. However, it might also lead to the development of learned helplessness, which manifest itself by cognitive, motivational and affective deficits. Among the other consequences of the feeling of powerlesness, is a struggle that is expressed by withdrawal, anger and control, whom are not suitable in an intervention context. By focusing on the team’s support and on the self-perceived role and control of the worker, it is possible to prevent and counter the feeling of powerlessness.
