The Underlying Dynamics of Student Engagement on Thesis Completion

Sivek, Nikolaj 01 April 2016 (has links)
Engagement is an increasingly important construct in organizational and educational settings. Research indicates that engagement is positively related to satisfaction, commitment, and performance in the workplace. This study investigated the relationship of Total Engagement to complete a thesis with Self-Determination Theory individual motivational constructs, the personality constructs of Psychological Capital and Core Self-Evaluations, and the experiential construct of Flow Propensity. The results indicated significant relationships between all constructs and engagement. Further, Psychological Capital and Flow Propensity explained 55% of the variance in Total Engagement to complete a thesis.

This study aimed to research the perception of the professorsabout the Psychological Captal (Psycap) of their cordinator in the degree in Administration in the Private Higher Education from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. If the cordinator promotes tHe Psycap in his followers was also analyzed. This study is characterized by being a Field reserch of qualitative and quantitative approach, which was conducted with 157 professors from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina to which was applied a eletronic survey and it was conducted using 10 Interview of Inventory of Critical Incidents, by way of content analysis technique (RICHARDSON et al., 2008). On quantitative approuch, some variables has influenced the average attributed to Psycap of these coordinators. And at the crossroads of these with the four dimensions of Psycap (self-efficacy, hope, resiliency and optimism), the following resultsemerged: the variable gender did not interfere on the results, i.e. both teachers as teachers attributed homogeneous for the average engineer Psycap. However, variables such as age, quality of relationship, length of service and if the teacher already held the position of Coordinator, presented heterogeneous responses, namely the generational factor influenced on note attributed to the course Coordinator as well as the quality of the relationship where the positive association was observed. As qualitative results, respondents showed, they realize the promotion of Psycap leadershipactions of the Coordinator, especially in the face of political and economic crisis thatthe country faces and in situations of IES evaluation by the Ministry of education and culture (MEC) through the positive performance on the test of the National Examination performance of students (ENADE). However, this still has in its mission a series of bureaucratic and operational activities, impairing performance in strategic management of course coordinates. Another factor that contributes to efficient management is the organizational culture of the IES that directly influence these actions of the leadership of the Coordinator. The results showed that the people and relationship management skills are essential for this play effective leadership Coordinator. These results allow you to flag some opportunities for improvements to the IES implementations, such as: reassessing the role of Coordinator for an innovative University management, the training coordinator to occupy a management position, have greater clarity on the requirements to fill the position of coordinator of travel and promote changes in the organizational culture of the IES, professionalizing them. The validation of the constructs was conducted via factor analysis and reliability estimation of Cronbach's Alpha by the indicator. Professors attributed an average score for the 4 course Coordinator (I kind of agree) and 5 (agree a lot) on a Likert scale of 6 points. That is, the perception of these respondents of the survey they show the Psycapof this coordinator, but none of the dimensions (self-efficacy, Hope, resiliency and Optimism) stood out positively or negatively about others. Similarly, this fact was ratified by examples in the interviews of the Events reported critical incidents.

This study is characterized by being a field research of quantitative and qualitative approach, which was conducted with 309 coordinators of private higher education from RS. This research aimed to know the perception of these managers/professors about their Psychological Capital (PsyCap) and the ability to generate it in the professors whom they work with. Thus, the PCQ (24) was applied, through electronic survey sent to participants by email and semi-structured interviews conducted with 10 coordinators. The results show that several operational activities are assigned for the manager/professor that causes him/her to have difficulties to manage the course. As for the Psychological Capital, the results pointed to a higher average in efficacy for men, while optimism was higher in women. The time as coordinator did not appear to influence the four PsyCap dimensions, but the time from experience in the university environment showed that the coordinators, who are between 5-10 years into it, were those with the best average in the four dimensions PsyCap. Regarding the ability to generate Psychological Capital in professors, through the inventory of critical incidents, applied in the second part of the interview, it was clear that the coordinators, even with involvement overload with bureaucratic processes can still stimulate, in addition to teachers, peers and also students in the four dimensions of PsyCap. These results point to a need of review by these IES about the role of higher education coordinator, his/her power, activities and competencies because higher education market is competitive and also because, a provision of courses is greater than the demand and the requirements of structural quality and organizational required by the MEC are higher. Thus, the possibility that the coordinator will come effectively act as a leader, stimulating teachers, pupils and peers in the dimensions of Psychological Capital may become a more frequent occurrence, causing the institution to gain in quality educational management and consequent improvement in work performance of this professional as well as their professors.

USING THE INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF FUNCTIONING, DISABILITY, AND HEALTH TO PREDICT PARTICIPATION IN ADULTS WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE: THE ROLE OF POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL CAPITAL

McDaniels, Brad Wayne 01 January 2018 (has links)
Participation is generally considered the ultimate rehabilitation outcome and, for individuals with progressive illnesses, elucidating the factors that impact participation is critical. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic degenerative, neurological condition affecting nearly 1 million people in the United States, making PD the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. PD has a profound negative effect on functioning and activity, but limited literature exists assessing the relationship between PD and community participation. The purpose of this study was to use the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) as a framework for explaining how PD affects participation. Additionally, because the ICF explains the impact of chronic illness and disability as consisting of interactions between different contextual and disease-related factors, this investigation also addressed whether the personal factors, Positive Psychological Capital (PsyCap), mediated the relationship between functioning with PD and community participation. A total of 114 individuals were surveyed from peer-led PD support groups in a Midwestern state. The study examined the individual and collective contributions of demographic characteristics, activities/functioning, environmental factors, and personal factors on community participation. Results from the hierarchical regression analysis suggest that demographic characteristics account for only 15% of the variance in participation, but when functioning was added to the model, 65% of the variance was accounted for. The addition of environmental and personal covariates did not result in any significant change in overall variance in participation. These results, along with the strong, positive linear correlations between functioning and participation (r = .78), indicate that functioning largely predicts an individual’s participation. The study also sought to identify any mediating effect of personal factors (PsyCap) on the relationship between functioning and participation. The results indicated that the completely standardized indirect coefficient was not significant, b = .065, SE = .0617, 95% CI = -.213, .029, with 0 falling within the CI, which confirms no significant effect of the mediator PsyCap. The study contributes new knowledge to the association between the symptoms associated with PD and one’s community participation. Clearly, functioning is the primary predictor of participation. The lack of mediation of PsyCap, again, supports the strength of the relationship between functioning and participation. Although PsyCap did not mediate the relationship, implications for future research are discussed.

Rektorers upplevelse av Positivt Psykologiskt Kapital (PsyCap) i sitt ledarskap / Principals’ experience of Positive Psychological Capital (PsyCap) in their leadership

Ellefors, Ann-Sofie, Nyman, Rosita January 2021 (has links)

The influence of selected non-cognitive factors in the flourishing and intention to quit studies of working students at a University in the Western Cape

Amadi, Winston Aligbaso January 2020 (has links)
Magister Commercii (Industrial Psychology) - MCom(IPS) / Working students encounter challenges and responsibilities at university and work. In attempting to study the books and chapters assigned, meet assignment deadlines, take part in extracurricular activities and function at work, working students may be overwhelmed sensing inadequate time to complete all their responsibilities. These may lead to certain negative outcomes for the working student, such as languishing, poor grades, taking longer than the expected time to complete studies or, in the worse scenario, quitting their studies. The primary aim of this study was to examine and understand the influence of non-cognitive factors (including PsyCap, time management, and grit) on flourishing and the working students’ intention to quit employing correlational and hierarchical regression analysis.

Positive Psychological Capital, Need Satisfaction, Performance, and Well-Being in Actors and Stunt People

Hite, Brian 01 January 2015 (has links)
Positive psychological capital (PsyCap), a second-order construct formed from optimism, hope, resilience, and self-efficacy, has predicted the performance and psychological well-being of a variety of full-time workers, and mediators of the relationships between PsyCap and performance and psychological well-being have rarely been examined. Using self-determination theory, broaden-and-build theory, and the conceptual framework of positive psychology, this study was an exploration of (a) the relationships among PsyCap, (b) basic psychological need satisfaction (i.e., autonomy, competence, relatedness), and (c) psychological well-being and performance using a sample of 103 working actors and stunt people. A serial mediation model was proposed whereby PsyCap predicted performance through need satisfaction and psychological well-being. Statistically significant bivariate correlations were found among PsyCap, autonomy, competence, relatedness, psychological well-being, and performance. Multiple regression analyses yielded indirect effects tested for statistical significance using bias-corrected bootstrapping. Results showed a total indirect effect of PsyCap on psychological well-being through need satisfaction and a specific indirect effect of PsyCap on psychological well-being through relatedness. Results showed no total indirect effect for PsyCap on performance through need satisfaction but did show a specific indirect effect of PsyCap on performance through relatedness. No statistically significant indirect effects of autonomy, competence, and relatedness on performance through psychological well-being were found. Theoretical and practical implications for future researchers, independent workers, and organizations supporting independent workers are discussed.

The Influence of Selected Non-Cognitive Factors in The Flourishing and Intention to Quit Studies of Working Students at A University in the Western Cape

The secondary objective was to make recommendations to universities and organisations on how to aid working students to develop or increase non-cognitive factors to ensure their flourishing and a reduced intention-to-quit studies. A non-probability sampling technique indicating, convenience sampling and purposive sampling were employed to recruit respondents. Respondents had to be working students (part-time students). The sample included 194 respondents (n = 194) from a university in the Western Cape. The survey instrument included a biographical questionnaire, the academic PsyCap questionnaire, mental health continuum - short form (MHC-SF) questionnaire, Grit-Perseverance of effort subscale, the time management short-range planning subscale, and a self-developed intention-to-quit questionnaire. Numerous studies confirmed the validity and reliability of these instruments. The relationship amongst the non-cognitive variables (PsyCap, grit and time management), flourishing and intention-to-quit studies were assessed through Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression analysis. The non-cognitive variables had a positive relationship with flourishing and a negative relationship with intention-to-quit studies. PsyCap was established to explain the largest proportion of the variance in flourishing and intention-to-quit studies. This is consistent with the findings of studies with similar variables. Recommendations were made for lecturers, counsellors, and university officials to collaborate to incorporate programmes that will aid in developing these non-cognitive variables into the university’s curriculum.

The relationship between psychological well-being in the Covid-19 pandemic and organizational processes for sustainable development

Seevers, Merle, Lopez Mamblona, Clara January 2021 (has links)
Psychological employee well-being is a severe challenge for companies around the world. The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated the problem and forced companies to act to ensure a healthy and productive workforce. Based on the Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R), this study examines the leader's perspective on how decision making, and communication processes have been altered in the face of the pandemic and how these alterations can promote the advancement of psychological well-being. Another central research focus is the impact of the changes in decision making and communication processes on the sustainable development of the organization. The relatively new perspective of the Psychology of Sustainability and Sustainable Development (PoS&SD) is applied to investigate these questions. A qualitative approach was chosen and a total of ten organizations were studied, half in Sweden and half in Germany. With the support of semi-structured interviews, leaders of small and medium-sized organizations in both countries were interviewed, and their perceptions were explored. The results showed that almost all companies in the study implemented changes to the two processes because they perceived deterioration in employee psychological well-being. While most leaders in Sweden indicated that they had given employees more autonomy throughout the pandemic, leaders in Germany reported a greater desire for direction and structure. The communication style likewise required adjustment to meet the new way of working and employees’ needs. Finally, it could be shown that the topic of employees’ psychological well-being will take on a higher priority in many companies in the wake of the pandemic. This is partially since companies have recognized that the fostering of psychological well-being is closely linked to sustainable development.
