A comparative study of Roy Campbell's translation of the poetry of Federico Garcia LorcaLockett, Marcia Stephanie January 1994 (has links)
Roy Campbell (1901-1957), who ranks among South Africa's leading poets, was also a
gifted and skilled translator. Shortly after the Second World War he was commissioned by
the Spanish scholar Rafael Martinez Nadal to supply the English translations for a planned
edition of the complete works of the Spanish poet and dramatist, Federico Garcia Lorca, to
be published by Faber and Faber, London. However, most of these translations remained
unpublished until 1985, when the poetry translations (but not the translations of the plays)
were included in Volume II of a four-volume edition entitled Campbell: Collected Works,
edited by Alexander, Chapman and Leveson, and published in South Africa. In 198617,
Eisenberg published a collection of letters from the archives of the Spanish poet and
publisher Guillermo de Torre in a Spanish journal, Ana/es de Literatura Espanola, Alicante,
which revealed that the politically-motivated intervention in 1946 of Arturo and Ilsa Barea,
Republican supporters who were living in exile in London, prevented the publication of
Campbell's Lorca translations. These poetry translations are studied here and compared with the work of other
translators of Lorca, ranging from Lloyd (1937) to Havard (1990), and including some
Afrikaans versions by Uys Krige (1987). For the analysis an eclectic framework is used that
incorporates ideas from work on the relevance theory of communication (Sperber and
Wilson 1986) as applied to translation theory by Gutt (1990, 1991) and Bell (1991), among
others, together with Eco's (1979, 1990) semiotic-interpretive approach. The analysis shows
that although Campbell's translating is constrained by its purpose of forming part of a Lorca
edition, his versions of Lorca' s poetry are nevertheless predominantly oriented towards the
target-language reader. In striving to communicate Lorca's poetry to an English audience,
Campbell demonstrates his skill and creativity at all levels of language.
Campbell's translations that were published during his lifetime earned him a place
among the best poetry translators of this century. The Lorca translations, posthumously
added to the corpus of his published work, enhance an already established reputation as a

This work is comprised of an Introduction and two Parts. Part One treats, by way of
historical review and evaluation, the disestablishment of the Christian worldview in a postmodern
age. Part Two proposes the means by whichthe Christian worldview might be reestablished. The
reestablishment includes the use of some of the benefits of postmodernism by Christians as well as
a return to the responsible reading of texts, especially the biblical text.
Part One, The Disestablishment of the Christian Worldview, is composed ofthree chapters.
Chapter 1chronicles the change that has occurred in Western culture because of the ascendency of
postmodernism. It isbest described as a change in authorityfrom the logocentric metanarrative which
has characterized Christianity to the deconstructionist rejection of worldviews by postmodern
literary critics. Chapter 2 reviews the paradigm shifts that have occurred in belief
systemsthat have occurred in the West as a result of this change,and Chapter 3 shows the effects of
all this in the culture's principal institutions.
Part Two, The Reestablishment of the Christian Worldview, is also composed of three chapters.
Chapter 4 shows the impact that postmodernity has had on the efforts now being made on behalf of
reestablishing the Christian worldview as a viable intellectual position in Western culture.
Chapter 5 is occupied with the negative and positive responses of certain Christian
scholars to the challenge of postmodernism, and Chapter 6 closes the study with an extended
treatment of the factors that must be in play for a reestablishment of the Christian worldview to

The literary science of the 'Kafkaesque'Troscianko, Emily Tamarisk January 2009 (has links)
This study provides a precise definition of the term 'Kafkaesque' by enriching literary criticism with scientific theory and practice, including an experiment on readers' responses to Kafka. Dictionary definitions justify taking the term back to its textual origins in Kafka's works, and the works can fruitfully be analysed by investigating how readers engage with them through cognitive processes of imagination. Modern scientific developments posit that vision, imagination, and consciousness should be conceived of not in terms of static pictorialism – reducible to the notion of 'pictures in the head' – but in terms of enaction, i.e. as an ongoing interaction with the external world around us. Most traditional nineteenth-century Realist texts are based on pictorialist assumptions, while Kafka's texts evoke perception non-pictorially and are therefore more cognitively realistic. In his personal writings, Kafka wrestles with problems entailed by pictorialist conceptions of vision, imagination, and the function of language, and comes to enactivist solutions: evocation of perception that does not result in painting static tableaux with words. In his fictional works, Kafka correspondingly evolves a cognitively realistic way of writing to evoke fictional worlds that directly engage the cognitive processes of their readers; Der Proceß is a prime example of the 'Kafkaesque' text and reading experience, defined by being compelling yet simultaneously unsettling. Modulations in narrative perspective and evocation of emotion as enactive also contribute to the experience of the 'Kafkaesque' as compelling; yet Kafka's texts simultaneously unsettle by preventing straightforward emotional identification with the protagonists, and destabilising deep-rooted concepts of selfhood as singular and unified. The theoretical discussion of the 'Kafkaesque' experience as compelling yet unsettling is complemented and refined by an experiment testing readers' responses to a short story by Kafka. The term 'Kafkaesque realism' denotes Kafka's compelling yet unsettling non-pictorial evocation of perception of the fictional world. Kafkaesque realism falls into the broader category of 'cognitive realism', which provides a framework for analysing fictional texts more generally.

基於生理、心理與社會因素,女性愉悅較男性複雜。本論文試圖藉由美國當代暢銷作家尼克拉斯‧史派克的愛情小說為文本,結合許多性別相關的理論去探討女性愉悅。史派克的羅曼史是當代文本,唯美的純愛是其特色,然而,這些帶來美好感受的愛情故事,是否是讀者們真心嚮往的美好愛情? 讀者在享受閱讀文本的當下,或許也默默地被一種僵化的愛情公式所限制,所謂的快樂,也許只是一種暫時的麻痺。
本篇論文從幾個不同角度切入去分析女性愉悅和羅曼史的關聯,第一章以丁尼斯坦的理論為切入點,就心理與社會層面探究為何女性在選擇伴侶上比男性有著更多限制,其理論也連結到嬰兒期由母親養育對於不同性別成年後伴侶關係有影響 ; 第二章以史派克這三本羅曼史<<手札情緣>><<瓶中信>><<分手信>>文本為主,並結合性別理論去分析羅曼史,探討其女性在羅曼史中的真相為何,文本裡也有許多部份展現出女性的許多壓抑;第三章以讀者回應為主要分析,藉由社群網站臉書的讀者真實回應,並結合過去其他做過相關讀者回應的理論與實際田野調查,分析不同時候讀者都藉由羅曼史得到快樂,不同的讀者群有共同與相異的讀者回應;第四章從這三本羅曼史的書信體形式,研究他者的缺席如何帶來快樂與痛苦,遠距離的愛情造就書信的存在,這其中的等待與期待,盼望與失望,主體不斷找尋失落客體的過程,都不斷創造失落與愉悅;第五章結論綜合前四章論點,提出女性要真正愉悅的努力方向。 / Due to biological, psychological and social reasons, female pleasure is seen as much more complicated than male pleasure. In this thesis, I try to analyse female pleasure by applying gender theories to the romances of Nicholas Sparks. Sparks is a contemporary writer mainly producing pure love stories. Are these love stories the ideal that readers pursue? When readers get pleasure from reading romance, they may be brainwashed unconsciously and limited by a fixed pattern of love. So-called happiness might be a temporary escape.
This thesis attempts to analyse the relationship between female pleasure and romance from several perspectives. Chapter 1 assesses Dorothy Dinnerstenin’s viewpoint that women face more psychological and societal constraints when choosing a partner. The mother takes care of children when they are infants, leading to differentiation of the opposite sex as they grow up. Chapter 2 examines three of Sparks’ romances – The Notebook, Message in a Bottle and Dear John – in the context of various theories to analyse the truth in romance and how repression is reflected in these texts. In Chapter 3, readers’ responses are the main focus. I have used readers’ responses gathered from Facebook and have made a connection with other romance reader responses. I have also attempted to combine both the similar and different viewpoints in Radwan’s Reading Romance and Linda K. Christian-Smith’s Becoming a Woman through Romance with my own analysis. In Chapter 4, I have used the epistolary form of these three romances to research how the lack of the other brings pleasure and pain. The epistolary form stems from long distance relationships, and during the process of waiting letters, the subject keeps finding the lost object and acquires pleasure and pain again and again. Chapter 5 is my conclusion and proposes a way for women to find real pleasure.

Previous issue date: 2011-12-20 / O objetivo principal desta pesquisa é analisar o segmento denominado literatura infantil sob a
perspectiva das tradições culturais decorrentes da prática de leitura no Brasil e nos EUA; da
influência desta espécie literária no processo de formação do indivíduo, e dos percalços
linguísticos enfrentados na tradução de livros estrangeiros para o mercado nacional. Para
tanto, far-se-á uma apresentação do contexto histórico-cultural da espécie literária, de suas
raízes nos contos orais indo-europeus até chegar ao que se considera a nascença da
literatura infantil brasileira no Século XX. Como complemento ao estudo cultural, avaliar-se-á
obras canônicas e textos doutrinários usando como suporte teórico da narrativa e da literatura
em geral: Gaston Bachelard, Peter Hunt, Ana Maria Machado, Terry Eagleton, Nelly Novaes
Coelho, Regina Zilberman, Marisa Lajolo, entre outros. Um enfoque especial será dado ao
conceito norte-americano e brasileiro de cultura de leitura e mediadores de leitura para
comparar o processo de formação do indivíduo em ambos os países. Como parte desta
abordagem, será mostrada uma análise dos conceitos de multiculturalismo e pluriculturalismo
as quais serão apresentadas para apontar sua importância e influência no leitor dentro da
sociedade. O último capítulo da pesquisa dar-se-á sobre o tema tradução e suas implicações
linguístico-culturais enfrentados pelo tradutor literário, assim como a migração do hábito de
leitura dentro das salas de aulas de L2 para fomentar a aquisição de uma segunda língua.
Analisar-se-á aspectos do texto original que se perdem numa adaptação ou tradução dando
uma ênfase especial aos conceitos de domesticação e estrangeirização para melhor atender às
necessidades do leitor final usando como suporte as teorias tradutórias de George Steiner,
Lawrence Venuti, Eugene Nida, Jeremy Munday, John Milton, Mona Baker, Zohar Shavit,
Susan Bassnett, Riitta Oittinen, entre outros. Como base de análise literária, o corpus desta
pesquisa será composto de alguns exemplos de cânones, focando especificamente dois livros
norte-americanos e suas traduções brasileiras: Where the Wild Things Are (Onde Vivem os
Monstros) de Maurice Sendak e Mr. Peabody´s Apples (As Maçãs do Sr. Peabody) da
Madonna.

Counterfactual Thinking and Shakespearean Tragedy: Imagining Alternatives in the PlaysKhan, Amir 10 July 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is the application of counterfactual criticism to Shakespearean tragedy—supposing we are to ask, for example, “what if” Hamlet had done the deed, or, “what if” we could somehow disinherit our knowledge of Lear’s madness before reading King Lear. Such readings, mirroring critical practices in history, will loosely be called “counterfactual” readings. The key question to ask is not why tragedies are no longer being written (by writers), but why tragedies are no longer being felt (by readers). Tragedy entails a certain urgency in wanting to imagine an outcome different from the one we are given. Since we cannot change events as they stand, we feel a critical helplessness in dealing with feelings of tragic loss; the critical imperative that follows usually accounts for how the tragedy unfolded. Fleshing out a cause is one way to deal with the trauma of tragedy. But such explanation, in a sense, merely explains tragedy away. The fact that everything turns out so poorly in tragedy suggests that the tragic protagonist was somehow doomed, that he (in the case of Shakespearean tragedy) was the victim of some “tragic flaw,” as though tragedy and necessity go hand in hand. Only by allowing ourselves to imagine other possibilities can we regain the tragic effect, which is to remind ourselves that other outcomes are indeed possible. Tragedy, then, is more readily understood, or felt, as the playing out of contingency. It takes some effort to convince others, even ourselves, that the tragic effect resonates best when accompanied by an understanding that the characters on the page are free individuals. No amount of foreknowledge, on our part or theirs, can save us (or them) from tragedy’s horror.

Intertextuality reinterpreted : a cognitive linguistics approach with specific reference to conceptual blendingVan Heerden, Chantelle 30 June 2008 (has links)
In this dissertation, I investigate the cognitive processes integral to intertextual readings by referring to the cognitive linguistics framework known as conceptual blending. I refer to different genres of intertextual texts and then explain these intertexts in terms of cognitive principles and processes, such as conceptual blending networks. By applying the framework of conceptual blending to intertexts within different genres, I suggest that the underlying cognitive processes are universal for the interpretation of any type of intertextual text.
My findings indicate that conceptual blending underpins intertextuality which is cognitive, creative and dynamic in nature. This means that the meaning we construct from intertexts is dependent on the context in which they appear and cannot be studied in isolation. Investigating intertextual texts from a cognitive linguistics perspective reveals new inferences (such as the influence of implicit knowledge as a type of intertext) and the creativity involved in the meaning-making process. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Linguistics)

Text in Afrikaans / Hierdie studie is 'n herskepping van die wereld van die Afrikaanse roman van 1934-1939. Al die
romans is bekom en gelees. Die beskikbaarheid van hierdie romans word aangedui. 'n Sketsmatige
beeld van elke roman word gegee, waarin die aard daarvan aangetoon word ten opsigte van die
volgende aspekte: milieu, tema en konflik (moreel, religieus, maatskaplik, polities). Die lotgevalle
van hierdie romans is nagegaan aan die hand van tydgenootlike resepsiegeskiedenis, sowel as die
van die literatuurgeskiedskrywing tot op hede. Hieruit het dit geblyk dat sekere romans aanvanklik
hoog aangeslaan is, maar nie in die kanon opgeneem is nie. Moontlike redes hiervoor word
ondersoek. Na my oordeel verdien Die loutering van Petrus deur Ella Fischer en Die jare daarna
deur Aletta Steyn 'n herbesoek. Albei romans is boeiend en interessant, die karakters "lewe" en dit
wat hul beleef en ervaar, spreek steeds tot die leser van die negentigerjare / This study is a recreation of the world of the Afrikaans novel of 1934-1939. All the novels were
obtained and read. The availability of these novels is indicated. A schematic account of each novel
is given, in which the nature of each is explicated in respect of the following aspects: milieu, theme
and conflict (moral, religious, social and political). The fate of these novels was researched in the
context of their contemporary reception history and that of literary historiography to date. From
the study it appears that certain novels were initially highly acclaimed, but were not included in the
canon. Possible reasons for this are investigated. It is my opinion that Die loutering van Petrus by
Ella Fischer and Die }are daarna by Aletta Steyn need to be re-evaluated. Both novels are
absorbing and interesting, the characters are lifelike and their life experiences are still relevant to
