Information practices in midwifery: a case study of an antenatal and intrapartum care environment in the Western Cape, South AfricaMustafa, Alrasheed January 2015 (has links)
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology in Information Technology in the Faculty of Informatics & Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology / Research on health informatics has seen a steady increase during this decade as the role of information technology in the health sector becomes pertinent. Findings of previous research in this domain have uncovered vast information needs of health workers, particularly in developing countries. However, there is a need to continue with multidisciplinary research in priority areas such as midwifery practice and in the environment of marginalised settings. This study explores the significance of the information needs and information-seeking behaviour or practice of midwives during the antenatal and intrapartum care within the environment of a midwifery unit. Additionally, the researcher obtained permission from Faculty of Informatics and Design – CPUT and Health department authority – Western Cape Government in South Africa, to conduct research in the Elsies River Midwifery Obstetric Unit (ERMOU). The research was carried out as case study in a Midwifery Obstetric Unit in the Western Cape, South Africa. The investigator conducted semi-structured interviews and observations to collect qualitative data of the antenatal and intrapartum care environment. The data was transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis and essomenic modelling.
The findings comprehensively point to the importance of this research context. The study found that midwives acquired patients’ information from a handwritten Maternity Case Record (MCR) book and midwives’ colleagues, and often during handovers. In addition, midwives also communicate with each other during care activities in the ERMOU. It was apparent that the use of such communication practices is inadequate, and midwives did not always have sufficient information to make appropriate decisions in the ERMOU. All patient information, referral notes, and reporting is paper-based.
In addition, essomenic models were used to depict the midwives’ work activities in the antenatal and intrapartum care environment in the Unit. Furthermore, essomenic models defined all the systematic processes that occur in the ERMOU which is described by midwives’ activities and work environment. To improve communication, future research is recommended to consider the importance of the continuity of the education of midwives. Further research will be on the implementation of nursing informatics and the electronic health record system in the Elsies River Midwifery Obstetric Unit.

Orientador: Marco Antonio Compagnoni / Banca: Francisco de Assis Mollo Junior / Banca: Claudio Rodrigues Leles / Resumo: O ato de deglutir tem sido empregado, clinicamente, durante a reabilitação protética, principalmente na etapa de determinação e registro das relações intermaxilares por se considerar que a deglutição de saliva levaria a mandíbula a uma posição que coincidiria com a relação central (RC) e com a dimensão vertical de oclusão (DVO) do paciente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar quantitativamente, em indivíduos dentados e portadores de próteses totais bimaxilares, três medidas associadas à posição mandibular durante a deglutição de água:1) separação intermaxilar no eixo vertical; 2) desvio ântero-posterior; 3) desvio lateral. Dois grupos foram formados: GI - composto por 40 indivíduos (22 homens e 18 mulheres) dentados naturais com média de idade de 45,27 anos; e GII - composto por 40 indivíduos (29 homens e 11 mulheres) desdentados totais bimaxilares, portadores de próteses totais, com idade média de 63,92 anos. A análise foi realizada empregando-se um sistema eletrônico K6 I Diagnostic System (Myotronics Research, Inc., Seattle, WA, EUA) acoplado a um sistema operacional (Microsoft Windows 4.1) que fornece registros tridimensionais dos movimentos e posições mandibulares. Os indivíduos foram avaliados pela deglutição de um volume reduzido de água (20 mL), e a posição de maior fechamento durante a deglutição foi registrada em três eixos (vertical, lateral e ântero-posterior). Esse registro foi executado três vezes, e o valor médio foi utilizado para este estudo. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que, durante a deglutição: 1) a separação intermaxilar vertical e os desvios horizontais foram semelhantes em ambos os grupos; 2) em média, houve separação intermaxilar significativa no sentido vertical; 3) nos eixos ântero-posterior e lateral, os resultados demonstraram um desvio moderado em relação à MI. / Abstract: The act of swallowing has been used as a clinical method in prosthodontics, specially for determining and recording jaw relationship, considering that swallowing saliva guides the mandible to a position coincident with centric relation (CR) and vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). The aim of this study was to evaluate, quantitatively, in dentate subjects and complete dentures wearers, three measurements associated to mandibular position during water swallowing: 1) intermaxillary distance on vertical axis; 2) anteroposterior deviation; and 3) lateral deviation. Two groups were selected: GI - composed by 40 subjects with complete dentition (22 males and 18 females - mean age 45,27 years); e GII - composed by 40 bimaxillary edentate subjects, complete denture weares (29 males and 11 females - mean age 63,92 years). A kinesiograph instrument (K6 I Diagnostic System(Myotronics Research, Inc., Seattle, WA, EUA) connected to a computer operational system (Microsoft Windows 4.1) was used for analysis, providing tridimensional records of mandibular movement and position. Each subject was tested during swallow of a small amount of water (29 mL), and the closest mandibular opening was recorded on vertical, lateral and anteroposterior axis. Three records were taken for each measurement and a mean value were obtained, these mean value was considered for this study. It was conclude that, during deglutition: 1) intermaxillary distance on vertical axis and horizontal deviation were similar for both groups; 2) there was a significant intermaxillary distance, on vertical axis; 3) for anteroposterior and lateral axis, results showed moderate deviation in relation to MI. / Mestre

This study aims at identifying the way Fundamental Education teachers have been applying and developing Educational Assessment. It aims at analyzing current assessment conceptions among Fundamental Education teachers of a selected public school and identifying, from their different types of evaluation records and methods, those reflecting or coming close to Educational Assessment conceptions. To that effect, I chose for research locus a Laboratory School/In-service Teacher Training College in the federal Fundamental Education public school system in Minas Gerais State, as I understood that its teaching work unequal conditions - dispensing education, research and extension - could provide a framework favorable to a top-notch and educational training practice. The methodological approach was qualitative research with Case Studies. The investigation was carried out in 2012/2014. Data collection was made by means of documentary analysis, questionnaire and structured interview. The documentary analysis was made in two phases. The first phase comprised: analysis of school documents, such as: its pedagogical and political project, charter of principles, school portfolio, school agenda, research carried out by the school, among others. The second phase comprised: analysis of materials produced by teachers and pupils, such as portfolios, classroom work, planning work, tests, logbooks, memory books, text production books, diagnostic activities, class diary, among others. Data on the assessment proposed in the school documents reveal discrepancies and gaps and indicate some difficulty in developing a collective assessment work. Another aspect the study focused on was the use of different types of record and assessment methods made by teachers, which showed that theoretical and practical approaches to educational assessment, or also, evaluation intentions were in opposition to the conception of assessment rating. In this sense, an assessment conception where participation, autonomy, authorship, collaboration, as well as the process itself and work building by all those involved in the educational process, which prioritizes the strengthening of a dialog, less conflicting and more emancipatory-based relationship between the subjects and objects of knowledge, became evident. / O presente estudo tem como objetivo identificar de que forma a avaliação formativa tem sido empregada e desenvolvida pelos professores da Educação Básica. Busca-se analisar as concepções de avaliação vigentes entre os professores da Educação Básica e identificar, a partir dos diferentes tipos de registros e métodos avaliativos utilizados por esses professores, quais deles retratam concepções de avaliação formativa, ou que se aproximam dessa perspectiva. Para isso, foi escolhida como lócus da pesquisa uma escola de Educação Básica pública federal, no contexto de um Colégio de Aplicação em uma cidade de Minas Gerais, a partir do entendimento de que as condições diferenciadas de trabalho docente, no qual se prevê o ensino, a pesquisa e a extensão, poderiam oferecer condições favoráveis para uma prática pedagógica diferenciada e formativa. O caminho metodológico ancorou-se na pesquisa qualitativa, tipo Estudo de Caso. A investigação foi desenvolvida no período de 2012 a 2014. Utilizaram-se a análise documental, o questionário, a entrevista por pautas, como formas de construção dos dados. A análise documental foi desenvolvida em duas etapas: a análise de documentos da escola como: Projeto Político Pedagógico, Carta de Princípios, portfólio da escola, agenda escolar, pesquisas realizadas na escola; e a análise dos materiais produzidos pelos professores e por seus alunos como portfólios, cadernos de classe, cadernos de planejamento, provas, diários de bordo, caderno de memórias, cadernos de produção de texto, atividades diagnósticas, diário de aula, entre outros. Os dados revelam discrepâncias e lacunas, no que diz respeito à avaliação idealizada nos documentos da escola, bem como apontam a dificuldade de desenvolver um trabalho avaliativo coletivo. Outro aspecto analisado no estudo foi a utilização por parte de docentes, de diferentes tipos de registros e de métodos de avaliação que apresentam aproximações teórico-práticas com a avaliação formativa ou ainda, com intenções avaliativas que se contrapõem à concepção classificatória de avaliação. Nesse sentido, evidenciou-se uma concepção avaliativa que valoriza a participação, a autonomia, a autoria, o processo, a construção e a colaboração de todos os envolvidos nos processos educativos e que tem como prioridade o fortalecimento de relações mais dialógicas, problematizadoras e emancipatórias entre os sujeitos e os objetos de conhecimentos. The aim of my work was to find out the specific features of Czech medical reports in terms of the possibility of extracting specific information from them. For my work, I had a total of 268 anonymized narrative medical reports from two outpatient departments. I have studied standards for preserving electronic health records and for transferring clinical information between healthcare information systems. I have also participated in the process of implementing electronic medical record in the field of dentistry. First of all, I tried to process narrative medical reports using natural language processing (NLP) tools. I came to the conclusion that narrative medical reports in the Czech language are very different than a typical Czech text, especially because it mostly contains short telegraphic phrases and the texts lack typical Czech sentence structure. It also contains many misspellings, acronyms and abbreviations. Another problem was the absence of existence of the Czech translation of the main international classification systems. Therefore I decided to continue the research by developing the method for pro-processing the input text for translation and its semantic annotation. Questionário de frequência alimentar quantitativo em pacientes com diabetes melito tipo 2 : desenvolvimento e validação de instrumentoSarmento, Roberta Aguiar January 2012 (has links)
Objective: To elaborate a quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for patients with type 2 diabetes. Design: Dietary data using 3-day weighed diet records (WDR) from 188 outpatients with type 2 diabetes were used to construct the list of usually consumed foods. Foods were initially clustered into eight groups: “cereals, tubers, roots, and derivatives”; “vegetables”; “fruits”; “beans”; “meat and eggs”; “milk and dairy products”; “oils and fats”, and “sugars and sweets”. The frequency of food intake and the relative contribution of each food item to the total energy and nutrient intakes were calculated. A food was included if it contributed at least 80% to total energy or nutrient content in its respective food group. Portion sizes were determined according to the 25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentiles of intake for each food item. Setting: GNE - Group of Nutrition in Endocrinology - cohort - Southern Brazil. Subjects: Outpatients with type 2 diabetes. Results: A total of 62 food items were selected based on the 3-day WDR and another 27 foods or their preparation options and nine beverages were included after the expert examination, and accounted for 95% of total energy and nutrient intakes. Also, a portfolio with food photos of each included food item and its portion sizes was created to support the patients in identifying the consumed portion. Conclusions: We developed a practical quantitative FFQ and portfolio with photos of 98 food items covering the past 12 months of the most commonly consumed food items. This dietary method will be valuable to assess the usual diet pattern of patients with type 2 diabetes in Southern Brazil.

O tempo geológico no ensino fundamental e médio: os estudantes e os livros didáticos / The geological time in elementary and high school: students and textbooksJeferson Botelho de Oliveira 04 April 2006 (has links)
A análise das colunas geológicas consultadas a partir de diferentes livros didáticos, possibilitou compreender como o tempo geológico aparece no ensino de evolução, junto à disciplina de biologia do ensino médio e na disciplina de geografia do ensino fundamental, enfocando a origem e as transformações do relevo terrestre ao longo das eras geológicas. Foi possível observar inúmeras informações heterogêneas e problemáticas didáticas, revelando problemas de ordem estrutural e cognitiva, que podem prejudicar professores e alunos no entendimento do tempo profundo, apresentando eventos desorganizados ou omitidos. Procurou-se ressaltar os principais marcos da construção da coluna geológica assim como os principais personagens envolvidos; citando James Hutton, John Playfair, Charles Lyell, Charles Darwin. Responsáveis estes parcialmente pelas modificações do pensamento filosófico-científico da Europa durante os séculos XVIII e XIX, destituindo o antigo pragmatismo dominante da crença de um planeta com 6000 anos de idade. As escalas temporais envolvidas como o mega-intervalo Pré-Cambriano, com 4,0 bilhões de anos de duração ou representando cerca de 85% do tempo geológico, muitas vezes foi apresentado graficamente diminuído ou omitido nas colunas geológicas analisadas. Detectou-se também problemas gráficos visuais com o Eon Fanerozóico, exibindo superdimensionamento das eras e períodos sem nenhuma justificativa aparente, e ressaltando com freqüência, graficamente, a Era Cenozóica com distinto grau de importância, apesar desta apresentar o menor intervalo de tempo registrado na coluna geológica, aproximadamente 65 milhões de anos. A compreensão cognitiva do tempo geológico é complexa e os livros didáticos pouco ajudam seu aprendizado. As evidências fósseis são tomadas como decisivas para a compreensão do tempo geológico. Como parte do trabalho, foram analisadas entrevistas com crianças e adolescentes moradores de jazigos fossilíferos, a fim de compreender como as evidências que lhes são próximas possivelmente influenciaram as idéias que elaboravam sobre o passado do planeta. O trabalho termina discutindo implicações didáticas de diferentes perspectivas. / The analysis of the geologic column consulted from different didatic books hás made possible comprehend how the geologic time appears in the evolution teaching, as a discipline of the biology in the high school, and in the discipline of geography in the school focus in the origin and the transformation of the earth through the geologic era. It was possible to observe uncountable heterogeneous information, and didatic problems, revealing troubles of structural and cognitive order, which difficult teachers and students in the understanding of the deep time, introducing unordered and ommited events. It was highlighted the main steps of the construction of the geologic column as well as the characters involved: citing James Hutton, John Playfair, Charles Lyell, Charles Darwin. These were responsible by the changes of the cientific-filosofic thinking of the Europe during the XVIII and XIX, destroying the old pragmatism of the faith of a planet with 6000 years old. The temporal scales involved with the Pre-Cambrian mega interval, with 4.0 billion years or representing circa 85% of the geologic time, many times was presented graphically shorted or omitted in in the geologic columns revised. It has been detected too graphic troubles with the Eon Fanerozoic, showing over dimensioning of the era and periods without any real motive, and highligting frequently the Cenozoic Era with distinct degree of importance, however it has one of the shortest length in the geologic column, with about 65 million years. The cognitive comprehension of the geologic time is complex and the didatic books softly help your learning. The fossil evidence are considered decisive to the comprehension of the geologic time. As part of the work, it was analyzed some interviews with children and teenagers living near animals and plants fossils samples, to comprehend how the neighborhood evidence could had influence the ideas that made it about the planet past. The manuscript and discussing didatic implications, from different perspectives.

As alterações acontecidas na paisagem do Bairro modificaram constantemente o registro arqueológico ao longo dos séculos, chegando a causar dificuldades nas interpretações obtidas através da sua análise. Assim sendo, a partir do estudo das transformações do Bairro do Recife, dos relatórios finais de pesquisas arqueológicas realizadas na área e dos fragmentos de louças coletados durante o acompanhamento arqueológico do Habitacional do Pilar ali localizado, buscou-se informações quanto as transformações desse registro arqueológico e as limitações que podem trazer ao arqueólogo. / The Bairro do Recife, throughout its existence, has undergone several transformations. The changes taken place in the local landscape constantly changed the archaeological record over the centuries, coming to cause difficulties in the interpretation obtained through its analysis. involving essential factors in property protection requirement or exclusivity resulting from
intellectual activity in the industrial, scientific, literary and artistic. The brand is characterized
as an element of intellectual property, since the registration of a trademark and its dissemination
in the industrial scenario can become synonymous with reliability when it becomes identified
as a benchmark for quality, durability of strength, status, and security for the customer's product
or service. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the benefits for small and medium-sized
companies that decide to register your trademark, specifically in the design of the registration
of marks in Sergipe industries. For field research were used the information obtained in the
questionnaires used in the industries of manufacturing segments, wood and furniture,
information technology, metalworking, food, chemicals, ceramics, oil and gas and others,
seeking to identify the importance attached for them to brand management. It was noted that
there is a lot of resistance by entrepreneurs register their brands, especially the little knowledge
about the importance of registration and the bureaucratic system involving the legal formalities. / A Propriedade Intelectual é um instrumento que garante ao autor a proteção de seus direitos
legais que envolvem fatores imprescindíveis no requisito de proteção da propriedade ou
exclusividade resultante da atividade intelectual nos campos industrial, científico, literário e
artístico. A marca caracteriza-se como um elemento da Propriedade Intelectual, já que o registro
de uma marca e, consequentemente, sua divulgação no cenário industrial pode se tornar
sinônimo de confiabilidade, quando esta passa a ser identificada como uma referência de
qualidade, de durabilidade, de resistência, de status, e de garantia para a clientela do produto
ou serviço. Sendo assim, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar os benefícios para as
pequenas e médias empresas que decidem registrar sua marca, especificamente na concepção
do registro das marcas nas indústrias sergipanas. Para a pesquisa de campo foram utilizadas as
informações obtidas nos questionários aplicados nas indústrias dos segmentos de confecção,
madeira e móveis, tecnologia da informação, metal-mecânica, alimentos, produtos químicos,
cerâmica, petróleo e gás e outros, procurando identificar a importância atribuída por elas à
gestão da marca. Notou-se que existe muita resistência pelos empresários em registrarem suas
marcas, principalmente pelo pouco conhecimento sobre a importância do registro e o sistema
burocrático envolvendo os trâmites legais.
