Religious education in a multicultural society : an examination of the expanding context of religion and multiracial families

Wilson, James R. 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / In this study, an attempt was made to examine the impact that the multiracial identity is having on the institutional Church and in its attempts to address the problem of racism in the United States. An effort will be made to explore the emergence of anti-racist paradigms that both- move outside the social construction of race and an ideology of racial hatred and which empower people of all hues, ethnic an linguistic groups. Particular emphasis will be placed on those approaches which de-emphasize majoritianism and a need to assert one's superior, moral, historic and pragmatic claims. A strong challenge is given to the Church to re-orientate its imagination away from the chimera of achieving a physically integrated institution in a color blind society and towards a clearer vision of empowerment in a fair and just society, incorporating pluralism in a shared framework. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Religion, identity and community : the religious life of Portuguese women in Durban

Pereira, M. Victoria (Maria Victoria) 11 1900 (has links)
This descriptive study investigates the link between religion, (institutional and private) identity (ethnic and personal) and the community (Portuguese and South African) in the context of religious and cultural pluralism. It analyses sixteen Portuguese women in Durban - nine Roman Catholics, five Protestants and two agnostic and it is executed within the framework of the theory of conditionalism or 'radical relationality', as expounded by J.S. Kruger. The religious practice, experience and identity of the participants are explored, and their social integration as well as famiIy and marital relationships (with special reference to submissiveness) are examined in the light of Catholic Feminist theology. The influence of their experiences on their religion and vice-versa, as well as the fluidity of their identities are analysed. The. results of the study highlight the paradoxical role of religion, as well as a decline in ethnic identity and Catholicism. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M. Th. (Religious Studies)

Taljaard, Dirk Cornelis 12 1900 (has links)
Praise and worship, central to every church service, as a grateful response to God's goodness and mercy, is frequently met with scepticism within the Reformed tradition. This is, partly, due to different definitions, resulting in a variety of subjective interpretations. It deprives the faith community of the joy and warmth expected to be experienced at gatherings. It furthermore results in youth having to seek alternative pastures for their specific needs. This research focuses on the Scriptural and theological foundation of praise and worship, as well as the needs of the youth, relevant trends influencing their needs, their preferences and dislikes as well as their attitude towards life in general. Aspects such as culture and the so called Generational theories and types of spirituality will come under scrutiny. Lastly recommendations are made for planning and presentation of Scriptural sound praise and worship, whilst, at the same time, empowering them to take joint responsibility. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. African Christian leadership : cultures and theologies in dialogue

Wilhelm, Hans-Martin 11 1900 (has links)
Spiritual leadership for the church in Africa is facing a crisis. While much of traditional African leadership shares the same basic values found in the Scriptures; modern manifestations of African leadership have been corrupted by various influences. This has resulted in traditional African leadership being grossly misunderstood and culturally unappreciated. Through the use of dialogue between cultures and theologies, and utilizing leadership theory as analytical tools and a frame of reference, this study looks at biblical leadership models, and aims toward a rediscovery, an appreciation, and a mature reappropriation of traditional African leadership values and practices for the African Church. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. A representação social do kanaimî, do piya'san e do tarenpokon nas Malocas Canta Galo e Maturuca

Manoel Gomes Rabelo Filho 30 March 2012 (has links)
Our study aims to understand the social representations of Kanaimî, the shaman and the people Tarenpokon Macuxi, in Canta's Galo and Maturuca's Villages, located in northeastern Roraima. Aimed to deepen the ideas that the Indians of these places have these characters on the culture in order to make their meaning and relate them to the religion. The initial research was literature in order to observe how the Kanaimî understood, and the shaman Tarenpokon in the past. We conduct interviews, which were used to support the verification of representations today, and analysis with reference to the theory of social representation. The Kanaimî, spiritual and starring as a character constant violent attacks, manifests and promotes terror to Indians. This causes the Indians to perform a series of rituals in order to keep them away from their paths. The shaman, as a trustee for many health and spiritual problems of the indigenous Macuxi, media to solve these problems together with the spiritual beings as possible. The Tarenpokon also as a healer capable of providing health, conducts prayer sessions that acts on the various "bichos" (bugs) to keep them or convince them to heal people. We relate these explanations to the cosmovision of the Macuxi to understand its religious manifestations. We have based historical studies and socio-anthropological aspects of the existing religious Macuxi that relate to the characters - Kanaimî, shaman and Tarenpokon - expanding their social representations and specifying the meanings they have

Interpretação constitucional e religião : uma contribuição possível

Melo Filho, João Alfredo Beltrão Vieira de 24 August 2010 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao_joao_alfredo.pdf: 846823 bytes, checksum: 9fcdde5a914fb9fec8cfe00783f12005 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-08-24 / This research aims to demonstrate and discuss the relevance of religion as a cultural element which is based on a pluralistic post-modern western society, and hence the right, in counterpoint to recent anti-democratic tendencies which advocate the withdrawal of the religion of the public arena, because of an alleged breakdown of its worldview as a constituent element of this society. It is highlighted the influence of the religion in the emergence of modern democracy as a source of political elements of the pre-constitutional state, it is also punctuated the dialogue between faith and reason and the possibility of relationship between religion and law mediated by the language of human rights. The author argues that the religious vision of the world can contribute to the interpretation of normative statements that express constitutional values, so religious denominations appear as vehicles of religious discourse in public space and pluralistic. The author chooses the procedure for judicial review as an abstract singular moment when the religious discourse can legitimately get into the democratic constitutional interpretation and implementation activity. The figure of the amicus curiae is quickly investigated, pointing to their characteristics and performance before the Supreme Court, pointing to the procedural aspects of the performance of religious faiths for the betterment of democracy / A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo demonstrar e discutir a relevância da religião como um elemento cultural no qual está fundamentada a sociedade pluralista ocidental e pós-moderna e, consequentemente, o direito, em contraponto a recentes tendências antidemocráticas que propugnam uma retirada da religião da arena pública, em razão de uma suposta superação de sua cosmovisão como elemento constitutivo e orientador dessa mesma sociedade.

Hierarchy Attenuating/Enhancing Organizational Environments and Intergroup Attitudes: Relationship of Racism, Classism, and Sexism in Multiracial and Monoracial Churches of the United States

Kim, Ye Jung 12 1900 (has links)
As Yancey (2003) has pointed out, the intentional character of racially integrated churches tends to lessen the social distance between Whites and minorities. The purpose of this study is to examine how racially hierarchy-attenuating and hierarchy-enhancing environments affect classism and sexism attitudes among congregations. The finding shows that multiracial churches promote H-A environment for class and race diversity, but not for gender equality. The class and race diversity is affected by organizational structure; on the other hand, gender equality is influenced by theologies. This study finds the answers to this discrepancy from the effect of biblical teachings on classist and sexist attitudes and the cumulative effect of structured domination of women.
