Examining ethics from a moral point of view framework: a longitudinal analysis

Walker, Kent R. 27 July 2007 (has links)
By use of interview data, this thesis investigates how two moral points of view, the Conventional and Radical, held by study participants relate to: 1) factors that influence ethics; 2) role models of a self-defined well-lived life; 3) factors that help and hinder participants from living their well-lived life; and, 4) experience of pressures to compromise and freedom to live out their ideals within organizations. A longitudinal analysis is applied comparing participant moral point of view as students, to participant perceptions since entering the workforce as university graduates. The results show differences and similarities within the four areas of interest based on moral point of view. The implications of finding differences in participant perceptions based on moral point of view are discussed, and areas for future research are offered. / October 2006

Raising Ladies at Longbourn : What Impact Does the Bennet Couple's Treatment of Their Daughters Have in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice?

Smedbakken, Christina January 2012 (has links)
This study investigates the childrearing skills of the fictional characters Mr. And Mrs. Bennet in Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, as well as their impact on the storyin general and on their children in particular. The spouses are first presented anddescribed individually, then as a married couple and finally as parents. This final andmajor part of the discussion conentrates on the oldest and the youngest of the Bennetdaughters especially, but touches briefly upon the other three as well. In performing thisanalysis, behaviouristic and psychoanalytical theories have been employed, in additionto biographic material on the author and historical accounts on childrearing, in order todetermine what aspects of the Bennet children's personalities and conduct should beascribed to their parents' handling of them. The results show that the Bennet parets failalmost completely in raising their daughters into healthy individuals, which should betheir aim according to the psychoanalytical model, and also in training them to becomethe functional, marriable ladies that they would have to be for their parents to beconsidered successful from a behaviouristic perspective. Their failure to secure a stableeconomy for their daughters adds to this. Not all the Bennet couple's efforts result infailure, however, and they both have traits to recommend them. Still, their treatment oftheir daughters affect both them and the course of events in the novel negativelly.

Nätverk och förebilder : en studie om betydelsen för entreprenöriella kvinnor / Networks and role models : A study on what role they play for entrepreneurial women

Ekman, Åsa, Yanya, Amina January 2011 (has links)
Background: Of those who start companies, only about 30 % are women. Women's companies also often have both fewer employees and lower turnover. Several efforts are therefore being made to try to influence and encourage more women to start businesses and to get them to expand. Two of these ventures are special network for women and about women entrepreneurs as role models, something that also the theories believe is very important for a more egalitarian business. While entrepreneurship is encouraged for growth in the community, it also has a male character, something that needs to be considered. Purpose: As both the EU and the Swedish government through measures such as Tillväxtverket, is investing large sums to promote networking and role models, we intended to analyze the importance of networking and role models for entrepreneurial women. We also intended to study entrepreneurship in women and as a minor part in the study, also examined the investments which the entrepreneurs themselves would like to see in order to promote female entrepreneurship in Sweden. Research method: We conducted the study based on a qualitative method with a deductive approach. We have chosen to do so since we wanted to be close to the theories and at the same time allow for a deeper analysis. In total, we retrieved information from seven respondents as a primary source through interviews which were transcribed and then worked upon together to try to keep a high level of credibility. Conclusion: The entrepreneurs in the study have loosened up the entrepreneurship definition to include a broader more multi-dimensional image of the entrepreneur. The entrepreneurs also felt that the role models certainly could be useful to counter the invisibility of women entrepreneurs, but they themselves made no use of any particular role models. They were all in consensus with the positive effects of networks but also in that these would ideally be composed of both women and men. The entrepreneurs would not like to see any special initiatives for just women, but rather for all entrepreneurs, and in particular efforts to provide better understanding and greater security for the entrepreneurs.

An Investigation into High Quality Leader Member Exchange Relationships and their Relation to Followers' Motivation to Lead

Rossi, Michael 01 January 2011 (has links)
This research further investigates the motivation to lead (MTL) construct and its antecedents. While existing research has investigated culture, personality, and direct experience as an antecedent to MTL, the indirect experience of observing an effective leader has not been studied. It was hypothesized that having an effective supervisor would be related to followers' leadership self efficacy and MTL. It was also hypothesized that this relationship would be moderated by the quality of the relationship between leader and follower. Little evidence was found supporting these hypotheses. In addition, the existing research into MTL has failed to establish the link between MTL and leader performance. Using leadership 360 ratings as a proxy for leader performance, no support was found linking MTL with leader performance. Academic and applied implications are discussed.

Coach's [sic] influence on the career development of student athletes / Coaches' influence on the career development of student athletes

Buckley, Shannon K. January 1997 (has links)
The goal of many institutions of higher education is to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful citizens of society. For college student athletes an athletic coach can play a vital role in the collegiate experience. The thesis, Coach's Influence On The Career Development Of Student Athletes, examined the extent, if any, an athletic head coach influenced the career planning process encountered by college student athletes. The study was original in nature as it attempted to investigate a head athletic coach's influence on a student athlete's career development. The participants of the study were 163 male and 92 female student athletes attending a Midwestern, NCAA division 1, mid-sized, public university. The 40 question, scaled, survey instrument was created by the researcher and field tested before the actual administration of the instrument. Significant findings were found for male head coaches influencing the career development of male student athletes. Other significant findings are also discussed. Recommendations of the study direct coaches and athletic administrators to be aware of the career-related challenges faced by college student athletes, and to create an environment that promotes healthy career choices. / Department of Secondary, Higher, and Foundations of Education

Pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes toward role modeling selected health behaviors

Santabarbara, Todd C. January 2004 (has links)
The problem of this study was to examine the relationship between pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes toward role modeling and the health behaviors they practice. Using a 26-item questionnaire modified from several instruments, a convenience sample of 166 pre-service elementary teachers enrolled in health education course at Ball State University, voluntarily completed the questionnaire in Spring semester 2004. A panel of expert jurors reviewed the instrument for face validity. A pilot test was conducted to confirm instrument reliability. Data were analyzed using both unviariate and bivariate analysis. Bivariate correlations indicated a statistically significant association between pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes toward role modeling and their attitudes toward role modeling healthy behaviors. Additionally, a statistically significant association was indicated between pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes toward role modeling healthy behaviors and the actual health behaviors they practice. Results confirmed that while elementary teachers believe role modeling healthy behaviors to their students is important, they are not consistently practicing healthy behaviors. / Department of Physiology and Health Science

Varför spelar de? : En intervjustudie om olika drivkrafters betydelse i valet av musik och instrument. / Why do they play? : An interview study of how different driving forces affect the choice of music and instrument.

Kelemen, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)
This is a study of how role models and idols affect the choice of instrument and music, with focus on the electric guitar, and which other driving forces that affect this. The intention with the study is to achieve knowledge about different driving forces that affect the will of playing an instrument. The theoretical point of the study is the sociocultural theory. Earlier studies on the subject are about social values, the affect role models have on people, and the frames of teaching and learning. I have used qualitative interviews, and my informants are electric guitarists with varied age and musical background. The result shows that growing-up environments and the affection from media affect the choice of instrument, but a stronger ambition is needed to keep on playing after the youth has passed. The discussion enlightens for example the positive and the negative sides of idolizing, and how the demand for idols changes through time. One conclusion is that role models are important but also changing conditions for sustained motivation in playing.
