Time value of Covered Warrants in Taiwan Stock Market

Lin, Hsuan-chun Unknown Date (has links)
Warrants has been traded in Taiwan for seven years, and provides more opportunities for participants to arbitrage, hedge and speculate in capital market. Warrant gives holders the right to buy stocks at certain price during a period of time. The premium (price) to long warrants is contained intrinsic value and time value. Other things being equal, the longer the time to expiration day, the higher the value of warrants, since there is larger probability for investors to get more return. However, would any other terms expect time to expiration affect the variations of time value, or if we can find some variables could provide other content of information and result the change of time value. This is what the study focus on. Followings are the results of this study: 1. There are not all thetas of warrants in this sample decreasing simply by the time to expiration. It seems to be other variables would cause the change of theta. Besides, some warrants had serious time-decay in a short period of time. 2. Intrinsic value, time to expiration, trading volume, whether underlying stock in electronic industry or not and the market condition all have obvious effects on decrease of time value and serious time-decay. 3. It is still impossible to use issue information to identify if this warrant will have time-decay in its life.

O papel de efeitos locais e remotos em variabilidades do sistema de ressurgência ao largo da costa oeste da América do Sul durante o El Niño / The role of the local and remote effects on the upwelling system variabilities along the western coast of South America, during El Niño

Maita, Rosio Del Pilar Camayo 02 April 2008 (has links)
Off the western coast of South America, the coastal upwelling system presents an exceptional productivity, a result of the high efficiency of the biological ecosystem in converting the primary production into biomass. These chemical and biological processes are strongly modulated by the physical environment. For instance, during El Ni~no events the fishery productivity is strongly impaired in response to an inhibition of the coastal upwelling. In spite of this fact be widely known since pre-Colombian times, much doubts still persist about the mechanism by means of which the coastal system is affected by the large scale phenomena. The present work was idealized with the intention of contributing for this knowledge, studying how occurred the changes in the system during recent El Ni~no events, with emphasis on the intraseasonal scale. In this investigation, different methodologies of data analysis were used to identify the nature of the forcing which produced significant oscillations observed during the El Ni~no 1997-1998. Also, it was investigated if these oscillations were remotely forced and propagated along the coast as coastal trapped waves; what were their spatial and propagation properties. The first part of the work consists of an analysis of the temporal variability and the characterization of the low-frequency fluctuations occurred during the El Ni~no events. This analysis uses the wavelet spectrum applied to time series of sea level data collected off southern Equador, Peru and northern Chile. The cross wavelet spectrum and coherence spectrum were used to evaluate the relative importance of local and remote forcing of the sea level, associated with effects of the 1997-1998 El Ni~no. In the second part, the fluctuations remotely forced wer compared with results of simple linear models and with the model of Brink and Chapman (1987), in order to obtain the coastal trapped waves properties during that extraordinary El Ni~no event. One important conclusion of these analyses was the confirmation that the intraseasonal variability observed offo Peru during the 1997-1998 El Ni~no was, in part, the result of remote and local forcing, associated with equatorial waves and the wind effect, respectively.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Doutorado Maria Inez Miguel.pdf: 1466295 bytes, checksum: cab4a04224edf6b54669d1e1fa9d3e99 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-10-25 / This researche concentrates on the teaching and learning of the Poisson s Model, whose questioning refers to the use of the Mathematical Modeling, to the steps to be considered and to the results both in the didactic interaction and in the acquisition achieved and mistakes made by the participating pupils. We considered the hypotheses that pair-work, computer use and practical experiments might favor the development of the didactical situations in order to validate it or not. For that purpose, a teaching sequence was elaborated based on our interpretation of the Mathematic Modeling Process suggested by Henry (1997) and it was applied to a group of University undergraduates students from the second year of the College of Electric Engineering and Computer Science. We adopted the Didactic Engineering as methodology, which allows for the validation of hypotheses through the confrontation between the two analysis, a priori and a posteriori, and favors the realignment of the activities during the process. The theoretical framework was constructed with some elements of Chevallard s praxeology and Godino s ontological-semiotic approach to cognition and mathematic instruction; the first guided the analysis of the didactic books and the elaboration and presentation of the proposed tasks in the intended sequence; the second was the basis for the determination of meaningful elements in Poisson s Model to be considered in the teaching and guide the result analysis, allowing for the identification of the knowledge acquired that were in accordance with the intended institutional guidelines and those that could be considered learning mistakes. This research lead to the conclusion that not only the use of the Mathematic Modeling is favorable for the study carried out but also that it made it possible for all the modeling steps to be interpreted, adapted and considered essential for the purposes to be achieved, emphasizing that the experiment carried out should be carefully chosen to serve as motivation for the target public and, if possible, contemplate interdisciplinary. Among the several significant elements of Poisson s Model taken as reference, many were acquired by the group of participating pupils. However, some difficulties related to the use of the software, to the interpretation of terms such as: at least, at most, etc and to the symbolic representation persisted throughout the whole process. The construction of Poisson s Model as hypotheses about the experiment carried out proved to be a viable and efficient strategy, guaranteeing relative easiness in the application the model in the most varied situations, including those with proximity with the Binomial Model; that result allows for the suggestion of the introduction of the mentioned model in the way it is presented, replacing the classical way, consisting of definition, example and exercises, or even, through the proximity with the Binomial Model. The use of a software proved to be efficient to expedite the representations and to make it easier for the visualization of properties; however, learning to handle the software cannot be simultaneous to learning the target content under the risk of compromising it. Pair work proved that information exchange, enriched and complemented by the backgrounds of the two individuals involved, allowed for the emergence of new questions and guaranteed greater reliability in the execution of the proposed tasks.

Desirability, Values and Ideology in CNN Travel -- Discourse Analysis on Travel Stories

Laine, Emmi January 2013 (has links)
Title: Values, Desirability and Ideology in CNN Travel -- a Discourse Analysis on Travel Stories Author: Emmi Laine Course: Journalistikvetenskap, Kandidatkurs, H13 J Kand (Bachelor of Journalism, Fall 2013), JMK, Stockholm University, Sweden Aim: The aim is to examine which values and ideologies CNN Travel fulfills in their stories. Method: Qualitative discourse analysis. Summary: This Bachelor ́s thesis asks what is desirable, which are the values of CNN Travel, the major U.S. news corporation CNN ́s online travel site. The question has been answered through a qualitative discourse analysis on 20 chosen travel stories, picked by their relevancy, diversity, and their expressive tone. Due to the limited space and the specific textual method, the analysis was restricted to the editorial texts of these stories. The chosen method was discourse analyst Norman Fairclough ́s model of evaluation, which revealed the explicit and implicit ways the media texts suggest desired characteristics. These linguistic devices took the readers ́ agreement for granted, as they imposed a shared cultural ground with common values, which is a base for a mutual understanding. After identifying the explicit and implicit evaluations, they were organized according to some major discursive themes found in the texts, and finally analyzed in order to expose their underlying values. The results showed how these certain values brought forth certain ideologies, to some extent in keeping with recent research of tourism and travel journalism. As the study has been put into a larger context of related research, the following pages will first explain some larger concepts of discourse analysis, such as representation, cultural stereotypes, ideology and power. A cross-section from older to more contemporary theories in culture studies has been utilized; moving from Edward Said ́s postcolonial classic Orientalism, an example of cultural stereotyping, to the more recent topics of ‘promotion culture’ and consumerism, and tourism researcher John Urry ́s ideas about the consumption of places and the ‘tourist gaze.’ In the end, the study considers what kind of power does travel journalism possess over the represented tourism destinations. Finally, when questioning the travel journalists ́ legitimacy and power to represent the travel destinations, poststructuralist Michel Foucault ́s theory about the ‘regime of truth,’ as well as Antonio Gramsci ́s ideas of ‘hegemony,’ theory of dominance through consent, were discussed and confirmed.

Polyhedra-based analysis of computer simulated amorphous structures

Kokotin, Valentin 25 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Bulk metallic glasses represent a newly developed class of materials. Some metallic glasses possess combinations of very good or even excellent mechanical, chemical and/or magnetic properties uncovering a broad range of both industrial and vital applications. Besides all advantages metallic glasses have also significant drawbacks, which have to be overcome for commercial application. Apart from low critical thicknesses, brittleness and chemical inhomogeneity one important problem of metallic glasses is the lack of an appropriate theory describing their structure. Therefore, the search for new glass forming compositions as well as the improving of existing ones occurs at present by means of trial-and-error methods and a number of empirical rules. Empirical rules for good glass-forming ability of bulk metallic glasses have been established in recent years by Inoue and Egami. Two of these rules, (i) Preference of more than 3 elements and (ii) Need of more than 12 % radii difference of base elements, seem to be closely related to topological (geometrical) criteria. From this point of view topological parameters contribute essentially to the glass-forming ability. The third rule (iii) demands a negative mixing enthalpy of base elements and refers to the chemical interaction of the atoms. The generalized Bernal’s model (hard-sphere approximation) was used for the simulation of monatomic, binary and multi-component structures. Excluding chemical interaction, this method allows the investigation of topological criteria of the glass-forming ability. Bernal’s hard-sphere model was shown to be a good approximation for bulk metallic glasses and metallic liquids and yields good coincidence of experimental and theoretical results. • The Laguerre (weighted Voronoi) tessellation technique was used as the main tool for the structural analysis. Due to very complex structures it is impossible to determine the structure of bulk metallic glasses by means of standard crystallographic methods. • Density, radial distribution function, coordination number and Laguerre polyhedra analysis confirm amorphism of the simulated structures and are in a good agreement with available experimental results. • The ratio of the fractions of non-crystalline to crystalline Laguerre polyhedra faces was introduced as a new parameter . This parameter reflects the total non-crystallinity of a structure and the amount of atomic rearrangements necessary for crystallization. Thus, the parameter is related to the glass-forming ability. It depends strongly on composition and atomic size ratio and indicates a region of enhanced glass-forming ability in binary mixtures at 80 % of small atoms and atomic size ratio of 1.3. All found maxima of parameter for ternary mixtures have compositions and size ratios which are nearly the same as for the binary mixture with the maximum value of . • A new method of multiple-compression was introduces in order to test the tendency towards densification and/or crystallization of the simulated mixtures. The results of the multiple-compression of monatomic mixtures indicate a limiting value of about 0.6464 for the density of the amorphous state. Further densification is necessarily connected to formation and growth of nano-crystalline regions. • The results of the multiple-compression for binary mixtures shows a new maximum of the density at the size ratio of 1.3 and 30 % to 90 % of small atoms. This maximum indicates a local island of stability of the amorphous state. The maximal receivable density without crystallization in this region is enhanced compared to neighbouring regions. • The comparison of the parameter and the density to the distribution of known binary bulk metallic (metal-metal) glasses clearly shows that both parameters play a significant role in the glass-forming ability. • The polyhedra analysis shows regions with enhanced fraction of the icosahedral short-range order (polyhedron (0, 0, 12)) in the binary systems with the maximum at 80 % of small atoms and size ratio of 1.3. Comparison of the distribution of the (0, 0, 12) polyhedra to the distribution of known binary metallic (metal-metal) glasses and to the parameter shows that icosahedral short-range order is not related to the glass-forming ability and is a consequence of the high non-crystallinity (high values of ) of the mixtures and non vice versa. Results for the ternary mixtures confirm this observation. • A new approach for the calculation of the mixing enthalpy is proposed. The new method is based on the combination of Miedema’s semi-empirical model and Laguerre tessellation technique. The new method as well as 6 other methods including the original Miedema’s model were tested for more than 1400 ternary and quaternary alloys. The results show a better agreement with experimental values of the mixing enthalpy for the new model compared to all other methods. The new model takes into account the local structure at atom site and can be applied to all metallic alloys without additional extrapolations if the atomic structure of the considered alloy is known from a suitable atomistic structure model.
