Image Segmentation, Parametric Study, and Supervised Surrogate Modeling of Image-based Computational Fluid Dynamics

Islam, Md Mahfuzul 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / With the recent advancement of computation and imaging technology, Image-based computational fluid dynamics (ICFD) has emerged as a great non-invasive capability to study biomedical flows. These modern technologies increase the potential of computation-aided diagnostics and therapeutics in a patient-specific environment. I studied three components of this image-based computational fluid dynamics process in this work. To ensure accurate medical assessment, realistic computational analysis is needed, for which patient-specific image segmentation of the diseased vessel is of paramount importance. In this work, image segmentation of several human arteries, veins, capillaries, and organs was conducted to use them for further hemodynamic simulations. To accomplish these, several open-source and commercial software packages were implemented. This study incorporates a new computational platform, called InVascular, to quantify the 4D velocity field in image-based pulsatile flows using the Volumetric Lattice Boltzmann Method (VLBM). We also conducted several parametric studies on an idealized case of a 3-D pipe with the dimensions of a human renal artery. We investigated the relationship between stenosis severity and Resistive index (RI). We also explored how pulsatile parameters like heart rate or pulsatile pressure gradient affect RI. As the process of ICFD analysis is based on imaging and other hemodynamic data, it is often time-consuming due to the extensive data processing time. For clinicians to make fast medical decisions regarding their patients, we need rapid and accurate ICFD results. To achieve that, we also developed surrogate models to show the potential of supervised machine learning methods in constructing efficient and precise surrogate models for Hagen-Poiseuille and Womersley flows.

Forecasting the Present / A Media-archaeo-genealogical Inquiry into Project Cybersyn

Gómez Venegas, Diego Ignacio 14 August 2024 (has links)
This research seeks to unravel the techno-epistemological principles underlying Project Cybersyn. By reconstructing its technological archive, this study presents for the first time a detailed account of the technological events that set this project in motion. As an effort to control Chile's industrial economy under the theories of management cybernetics, Project Cybersyn is considered one of the most innovative technological undertakings of the early 1970s. Developed in the context of the Allende government and the socialist revolution in Chile, the project has usually been understood as a product of such a process. This research asks, however, whether such an understanding may hinder a more comprehensive assessment of the project and its scope. Accordingly, this dissertation examines the technological archive of Project Cybersyn in order to elucidate whether this case may have been an early concretization of a techno-episteme that, in turn, signaled an epochal shift in which our present is still inscribed. With attention to Wolfgang Ernst’s notion of the agency of the machine, this research shows that in the operational configuration of Project Cybersyn, clear technological principles can be discerned; principles that prescribe not only new modes for the configuration and circulation of information, but also for the organization and interaction between machine and human agencies. In this sense, this dissertation demonstrates that the technological archive of Project Cybersyn signals the emergence of both a techno-episteme and a techno-politics. Finally, this research shows that in the implementation of Project Cybersyn, a series of technological events gave way to a general process of collective becoming. In other words, this study of Project Cybersyn shows that this case operates as a forecast of the present.

Strategic IP Structuring in M&A of Mobile Phone Businesses-Utilizing the BenQ-Siemens Merger for Case Study

Chang,Aileen S.J Unknown Date (has links)
In 2005 and 2006, several renowned mobile phone OEM or branding companies in Taiwan were merging, sinning off and/or restructuring through their local or foreign affiliates. Except some were intended to exit the market, most were utilizing the merger and acquisition to combine various resources to grow in their sizes. In one of the cases, the merger of mobile phone business units of BenQ – Siemens, BenQ clearly indicated that through the merger, BenQ intended to acquire the intellectual property resources from Siemens including the essential patents, license of trademarks, technical supports and know-how, etc. BenQ also indicated that the acquisition of licenses of Siemens’ essential patents and brand name usage regarding mobile phone business would be the major target in the merger deal, as well as the turning point as to whether the merger should proceed along. In that case, therefore, BenQ highly expected to obtain licenses of Siemens’ essential patents and brand name regarding mobile phone business. The foregoing paragraph raises certain issues: what is the business purpose of a Taiwan mobile phone company to obtain the essential patents from other renowned and sized mobile phone branding companies? Assuming such business purpose is found, what kinds of evaluations and feasibility studies the merging company should conduct before the merger closing, in order to warrant the business purpose? Besides, what is the business purpose for the merging company to acquire from the renowned company a license to use the trademarks? If the merging company views such trademarks not as merely trademarks, but largely focuses the branding value added by the merged company with such trademarks, one would ask a question: where are the activities that have created and supported the mobile phone branding value? Through what ways, the merging company is able to successfully transfer the branding value from the merged company to the merging company and develop its business prosperously with the transferred branding value? This thesis starts with the above issues and discusses the relevant topics in various theories, using the ample business materials and facts in BenQ – Siemens merger as a base for case study so as to make the theory discussions in this thesis in a more practical sense. The research conclusion in this thesis indicates: If the major target in the whole merger deal is to acquire essential patents and trademarks from the merged business, the merging business must establish a complete feasibility assessment program in accordance with the intended business purpose (the thesis intends to provide a illustration charts for such assessment program) before the closing, and a well coordinated implementing procedures for post-closing operation, in order to higher the probability of meeting the intended business purpose while lower the possibility of spoiling a “great opportunity” into a “huge risk”. In addition and beforehand, the merging business should be able to tell the specific differences in nature between the brand names and trade marks. The merging business should also clearly identify the merged branding value, and further, ensure there is no negative impact in applying the merged branding in its business. Based on the conclusion stated in the preceding paragraph, the author thereby submits the following recommendations as a result of the research in the thesis: 1.If the specific target for a merging business seeking to combine intellectual property resources of the merged business is to obtain the essential patents from the merged business, it is advisable for the merging business to, before the merger, identify whether the patents proposed to be acquired are indeed essential patents in relevant industries, establish a clear business purpose feasibly achievable by acquisition of such patents, and establish an assessment program and a well coordinated implementing procedures operation in accordance with the established business purpose. 2.It is extremely imperative to conduct a solid and full-scaled pre-closing feasibility studies so as to reduce the business risks in merger deal. It is advisable for a merging business to devote considerable resources to conduct evaluation and information gathering before merger closing, and not to remedy and mitigate the case in post closing days. 3.It is advisable for the merging business to identify and list in detail the risks in acquiring the core patents from the merged business, and further structure through merger related contracts to effectively control and minimize such risks. 4.It is advisable for the merging business to clarify whether the proposed trademarks are having true branding value, find the factors within the merged business creating and supporting such branding value, clearly tell differences between branding value and brand popularity, and then carefully assess if the proposed brand name is powered with the true branding value or merely covered with a wide popularity. 5.After identifying the branding value of the proposed trademark, if the branding value is intended to be transferred into the merging business, it is advisable for the merging business to conduct a full examination on the previous branding value activities of the merged business, and adjust/develop the value-added items of new activities by continuing joint efforts of corporate businesses, not a flash show in the market. 6.No matter the marketing strategy is by single brand name or combined dual brand name, if the proposed trademark usage is limited by time expiration, the merging business must consider after the expiration, how to successfully transfer the branding value of the proposed trademark to existing trademark originally held by the merging business, and how to maximize or maintain the independent branding value of the existing trademark after the expiration.

Vliv decentrálních zdrojů na provozování distribuční soustavy 110 kV E.ON / The impact of distributed generation on 110 kV distribution system E.ON

Hajdú, Lukáš January 2011 (has links)
This Master´s thesis deals with problematics related to the connection of new decentralized power sources into electrical power grid. Due to advantageous legislative support of these new, especially photovoltaic power sources, a massive amount of these sources have been connected into the power grid between years 2009 and 2010. For theoretical understanding of processes during a steady-state, the initial parts of this paper are focused on a procedure which solves steady-state on every power line mentioned. When we speak of decentralized power sources connection, it is necessary to mention the connected legislative. National distribution grid operators in collaboration with national regulatory commission have decided on a legislative document Rules of distribution grid operation, which puts a set of demands and requirements on applicants wishing to connect a new power source to the grid. The text of this thesis is focused mainly on demands required after the latest change in 1/2010. Practical part of this work deals with verification of new power source influence on a related power grid and meeting the legislatively required demands. The most important demands are voltage change due to new power source operation and its transfer to other voltage levels, higher harmonics injection, power output fluctuation and last, not least, changes in load flow directions. For reasons previously mentioned an analysis is made and possibilities of reducing or removing of these influences are introduced. To achieve these goals, two computer programs, Siemens Sinaut Spectrum and NetCalc are used.

Analýza účinků zkratového proudu v rozváděči / Analysis of effects of short-circuit current in switchgear cabinet

Prokop, Jan January 2015 (has links)
The work is focusing on dynamic effects of short-circuit currents, more precisely dynamic effects of short-circuit currents on switchgear cabinet (terminal box). The work was designated to a concrete construction type of two switchgear cabinets located on rotating machines via company Siemens Electric Machines Drásov s.r.o.. The switchgear cabinets are designed for non-explosive environment where the air is used as an insulating medium. The task was to determine how the device will behave during the three-phase short-circuit and three-phase short-circuit with earth/ground connection. The following programs were used for the calculations and simulations: Ansoft Maxwell 16.0, Ansoft Maxwell 2015 and ANSYS Workbench 16.0. By using these programs the effects of forces which acts on current paths in cabinet caused by the passage of short-circuit current were simulated, statically and also dynamically. Further the effects of pressure acting on cabinet frame during the arc short-circuit have been statically and dynamically simulated. All the results are summarized in the conclusion. Conclusion also contains the final evaluation of the functionality of both switchgear cabinets.
