Rademeyer, Gerrit Johan 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation is to determine the differences between the Yepes and Segovia editions by comparing selected studies. In order to determine the correctness of the Yepes and Segovia editions both are compared to the facsimile edition as well. Yepes and Segovia both introduced a number of changes. The most typical of these are indicated and possible reasons for their inclusion in the two editions are discussed. The conclusion is that Yepes as well as Segovia had very definite reasons for including alterations to the facsimile edition in their own editions. Both have in their own editions an individual and highly personal approach which leaves us with the unique gifts of the two editions, and the guitar student with a variety of possibilities in the performance of these studies. / Department of Musicology / M.Mus.

Vélez Marquina, Roberto Elio 08 November 2019 (has links)

Martínez Waman, Catalina January 2013 (has links)

Born in San Miguel de Nepantla in 1651. At the age of nineteen she left the court's protection and opted to profess the Order of Jeronimas, where she produced most of her literary work in prose, verse, theater, novels, sonnets, love poetry, carols, letters, philosophical and theological writings. She wrote latin and castilian poems in the mexican language and in several dialects of the region. Maria clared to discuss and claim for the women of her time, the right to study and knowledge. Moreover, their knowledge in several areas of science were considered extraordinary for the occasion. She came to challenge in writing the Sermon of Mandate on the jesuit priest Antonio Vieira, with serious repercussions and ramifications at the time but whose discussion on the subject extends to the present day. From these initial observations, we examine how Sor Juana would have represented some notions of Mary's figure, especially in her carols in honor of the Conception and the Assumption of our lady and part of her prose writings, articulated how these notions in a particular type of narrative that sometimes tends to acquire a specific meaning. The intention is to analyze the relationships between these narratives and the context lived by religious woman in wich contex we understand as strongly shaped by the Christian faith, but also discussions, beliefs, theological challenges, literary and political. Therefore, this study intends to integrate different areas such as history, philosophy and the baroque literature of New Spain. From this research, we intend to contribute by bringing to the debate a topic and a time that are also part of the history of the Church and the religious and cultural thinking that permeated Mexico of XVII century, and adds a feminine name to the Scholastic Colonial Latin America.

Finding a Room of One’s Own: Veronica Franco and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz

Unknown Date (has links)
During the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, both in the Old and the New World, the patriarchal social structure had created a set of fixed gender rules based on gender roles to control female sexuality, female voices, and their social freedom because it was considered a threat to male superiority. The Venetian Veronica Franco and the Mexican Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz are two extraordinary women from different places and a hundred years apart who, with their elaborated writing and body-related techniques, escape the gender patriarchal constrains and give voice to their new authorial persona in a female liminal environment. Veronica Franco and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz represent the two facets of the same coin that symbolizes the phallocentric patriarchal structure in which these two women happened to live, struggle, and write. These women were pushed to the margins of society, confined in convents, brothels/patrician houses, or the streets, to silence their personae and reinforce their inferiority and, at times, inexistence. There are no works that focus on the comparison between the well-known Mexican nun and the forgotten Venetian courtesan. Therefore, this dissertation aims to analyze the writings of Veronica Franco and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz through the lens of feminist theory (Cixous, Irigaray etc.) and the concept of the body as an instrument of subversion and female liberation. In their respective time and marginal places of confinement (the patrician house and the convent), both women were able to create a liminal space that allowed them to go beyond the rigidity of gender binaries and explore different venues of freedom. In this liminal space both Veronica Franco and Sor Juana stopped “performing” the fixed gender roles imposed by the patriarchal social order and created new female creatures at the margins of patriarchal society; a new type of woman who could, through her body and writing, destabilize the patriarchal gender identities and go from a passive silence object to an active writing subject. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION AND PARALLEL COMPUTING FOR THERMAL TRANSPORT MECHANISM DURING NANOMACHINING

Kumar, Ravi R. 01 January 2007 (has links)
Nano-scale machining, or Nanomachining is a hybrid process in which the total thermal energy necessary to remove atoms from a work-piece surface is applied from external sources. In the current study, the total thermal energy necessary to remove atoms from a work-piece surface is applied from two sources: (1) localized energy from a laser beam focused to a micron-scale spot to preheat the work-piece, and (2) a high-precision electron-beam emitted from the tips of carbon nano-tubes to remove material via evaporation/sublimation. Macro-to-nano scale heat transfer models are discussed for understanding their capability to capture and its application to predict the transient heat transfer mechanism required for nano-machining. In this case, thermal transport mechanism during nano-scale machining involves both phonons (lattice vibrations) and electrons; it is modeled using a parabolic two-step (PTS) model, which accounts for the time lag between these energy carriers. A numerical algorithm is developed for the solution of the PTS model based on explicit and implicit finite-difference methods. Since numerical solution for simulation of nanomachining involves high computational cost in terms of wall clock time consumed, performance comparison over a wide range of numerical techniques has been done to devise an efficient numerical solution procedure. Gauss-Seidel (GS), successive over relaxation (SOR), conjugate gradient (CG), d -form Douglas-Gunn time splitting, and other methods have been used to compare the computational cost involved in these methods. Use of the Douglas-Gunn time splitting in the solution of 3D time-dependent heat transport equations appears to be optimal especially as problem size (number of spatial grid points and/or required number of time steps) becomes large. Parallel computing is implemented to further reduce the wall clock time required for the complete simulation of nanomachining process. Domain decomposition with inter-processor communication using Message Passing Interface (MPI) libraries is adapted for parallel computing. Performance tuning has been implemented for efficient parallelization by overlapping communication with computation. Numerical solution for laser source and electron-beam source with different Gaussian distribution are presented. Performance of the parallel code is tested on four distinct computer cluster architecture. Results obtained for laser source agree well with available experimental data in the literature. The results for electron-beam source are self-consistent; nevertheless, they need to be validated experimentally.

Scheid, Emil Daniel January 2015 (has links)

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: In this work we review certain biographical and historical data concerning Sor Juana and María Luisa, Condesa de Paredes. In addition, we have chosen Ovillejos 214, Romance 61, Redondillas 90 and 91 as poems that provides important insight into their relationship of patronage and friendship. In order to delineate theoretically both aspects of this relationship --the public and the personal-- we make use of the concept of ekphrasis proposed by Frederick de Armas. This concept is applied to the analysis of Romance 61, which is in the tradition of the lyrical Petrarchan portrait. Redondillas 90 and 91 are examined from the theoretical perspective of Cicero's amicitia, which serves to define an alternative model of feminine amicitia. In constructing this model, we review the written criticism surrounding María de Zayas' comedy, La traición en la amistad (1635). This criticism insists on a certain configuration of feminine friendship necessary for understanding the relationship between the two women. As is demonstrated in the analysis of the poems, the two women developed a mutual and permanent affection for one another until the death of Sor Juana in 1695. The Condesa de Paredes also provided practical support to Sor Juana for the publication of her first book, Inundación castálida (1689), which launched her to literary fame. To date there have been no critical studies that apply the concepts of ekphrasis and feminine friendship to the study of anecdotal clues found in the poems of Sor Juana for analyzing the nature of her relationship with the Condesa. This is the contribution of the present work. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Spanish 2014

Tracking the incivility footprint : an experience-sampling smartphone application measuring workplace incivility

Connolly, Catherine Mary January 2017 (has links)
On an everyday basis, employees may be subjected to low intensity negative behaviours from those they work with. Uncivil behaviours may cumulatively add up over time to have detrimental effects on employees’ wellbeing and commitment to stay with their organisation. Since most of the research has been cross-sectional, capturing a snapshot in time, knowledge regarding the day-to-day effects of experiencing workplace incivility is limited The broad aim of the present research was to develop a new data collection tool in the form of a digital diary Smartphone app, to explore these day-to-day effects, measuring face-to-face and online workplace incivility. Three studies were conducted to develop and test the app. The first pilot study sought to test the proposed measures for use in the app. In particular, the commonly used Workplace Incivility Scale (WIS) was adapted to apply to online as well as face-to-face interactions. Statistical analysis of this pilot confirmed that both the face-to-face and online versions of the WIS were reliable and valid, and determined that experiencing workplace incivility via both modes was significantly associated with emotional exhaustion, and intentions to quit. On the basis of the first pilot, the app was developed and its feasibility tested in a second pilot focusing on the usability of the new app, which resulted in minor design changes being implemented prior to the final launch. The main research study sought to validate the new app and test a series of hypotheses about the day-to-day effects of workplace incivility. Participants completed an initial web-based survey and were then instructed to complete the questions on the app for one month. Multilevel analyses revealed that employees experienced higher levels of emotional exhaustion, and intention to quit on days when they were exposed to face-to-face or online incivility. The amount of incivility that participants experience on a day-to-day basis (Level 1) predicts emotional exhaustion, and intention to quit on a daily basis, and the average amount of incivility (Level 2) that participants experience also predicts their emotional exhaustion, and intention to quit when not considering other factors. Anger and fear were found to mediate the relationship between both forms of incivility and intention to quit. For the rumination-mediated models, the relationship between both forms of workplace incivility and emotional exhaustion is significantly mediated by rumination. Theoretically, this research contributes by providing insight into workplace incivility and its effects on a daily basis. Methodologically, this research advances the field by providing a new reliable and valid repeated measures data collection tool that other researchers may share to overcome and build upon the limitations inherent in cross-sectional studies.

The scientific reality of the 17th century in Nueva Espa?a is an arrow targeting the glimmer of the Baroque art produced in Mexico in the 1600s. In order to offer a reading of Neptuno Aleg?rico, this research is founded upon three investigative theoretical frameworks that observe the work in its varied forms of writing and aesthetics. The first of these grasps the baroque and its theories/researches from the earliest ones like in Heirich W?lfflin (1888) to the most contemporary like in Jos? Antonio Maravall (1997), Severo Sarduy (1989), Eug?nio d?Ors (1990), Gilles Deleuze (1991), Lezama Lima (1988), Walter Benjamin (1984) and Fernando Rodr?guez de la Flor (2002) in order to locate them near the experimental-scientific baroque poetics of the erudite nun in the America of the Golden Century; the second line of theory aims at perceiving the emblematics in Neptuno Aleg?rico stemming from the ideas of Andrea Alciato (1531) and his contemporary revisiting by means of the studies by M?rio Praz (1963) and again by Fernando Rodr?guez de la Flor (1995), so as to achieve an emblematic reading of the artistic descriptions in the canvases/paintings/lienzos elaborated by Sor Juana In?s de la Cruz; last but not least a third framework that points to understanding the work Neptuno Aleg?rico as it nears the mathematical combinatory investigation of Sebasti?n Izquierdo (1659) inserting it in other contemporary scholarly works that deal with art and science.
