How a government subsidized garment can help solve the sustainability issue in the fashion industry

Fast, Amélie January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this project is to identify issues plaguing the fashion markets poor record of sustainability andprovide a solution. This is done by identifying the issues, why they happen, how they can be solved and what the solution should look like. Thus, the project asks itself: “How would a modern revision of the concept of government clothing look like and affect us today?”. Aiding in this mission are our historic examples, sustainable development and circular economy. Historically there have been several attempts with varying success, some like the failed Utility Clothing project or the successful Kånken. Products deriving from these concepts become sustainable and healthy for the economy, the people, and the environment. To facilitate this development this study uses interviews and a self-built toolkit based on the “Dream device” where users can test, build, and mixtogether their dream garment. To create the products, sketching methods and test garments are sewn to project the design requirements into reality. This all results in four pieces of one outfit and support material that fulfills the sustainability requirements.

Martin, Anabelle 08 1900 (has links)
In these days, artisanal-looking objects often symbolize ecological qualities such as natural materials and ethical production. The aims of the study were to explore perceptions towards artisanal looking objects and that, in order to recognize what ecological qualities are attributed to them, while trying to understand the reasons behind these associations. A study of users allowed to explore all the qualities that can be associated with this type of object, considering specifically the relationship between these environmental qualities and their planned lifespan. To do so, topics such as long-term appreciation, meaning and consideration of cultural diversity were examined during individual interviews. Results show that artisanal-looking objects are caracterized as objects being made of materials that are natural and safe for users. As well, their patina stimulates the perception of having a « story », and their originality gives the perception of the object having « soul ». Lastly, because they are considered as being made by independent designers, these objects are associated with ethical working conditions and are perceived as having the capability to drive the local economy. Among other things, the information gathered can inform theory and practice in the field of industrial design on the ability of artisanal-looking objects to be appreciated. Information can also shed light on their planned lifespan in regard to user’s level of emotional attachment, and on the desire of users to preserve and to bestow them upon future generations. This project stands as a first inventory of perceptions pertaining to this type of object, a field of research not yet well documented although it is in line with the current environmental and social context. The obtained results, therefore, contribute to the ongoing project of a more sustainable design, production and consumption.

Snålandsstolen : Snåla with material resources

Bessing, Johan January 2019 (has links)
This is a project about how the furniture industry could become more sustainable intheir waste handling. The project is based in Småland both geographically and interms of heritage and history in order to encourage locally produced products. Thecollaborators for this project are the two furniture companies Swedese andStrömslunds Snickerifabrik AB. Both companies have their production in Vaggeryd,Småland. Both companies are struggling with the waste that they produce. The aim ofthis project is to find a sustainable solution for their waste issue. In order to find asolution two theories are applied. The first one is industrial symbiosis which meansthat several industries can, by collaboration, profit from each other’s resources. Thesecond theory is circular economy which encourage remake, reuse or recycling of aproduct once it has reached its end of life. To prove that this solution would be possiblea hunting chair was made by combining the waste material that was gathered fromSwedese and Strömlunds. The decision to make a hunting chair was made to connectthe chair with the heritage of hunting and foresting in rural Småland. The making ofthe chair was different in the way that instead of that the designer would tell thematerial what was possible it was instead the material that decided the limitationsand possibilities. The final product fulfils its purpose and works perfectly for outdooractivities, even though some minor design decisions could have been changed. Theoutcome proves that Swedese and Strömslunds could benefit from working more withcircular economy and start cooperating in order to work as an industrial symbiosis.

Assisting decision making in component design for sustainable manufacturing

Eastlick, Dane, 1985- 15 March 2012 (has links)
Current life cycle assessment tools are often deficient in assisting design for sustainable manufacturing efforts. Integrating an improved assessment method into a decision support framework will provide a means for designers and engineers to better understand the impacts of their decisions. A unit process modeling-based sustainability assessment method is presented to assist design decision making by accounting for and quantifying economic, environmental, and social attributes. A set of these sustainability metrics is defined as a basis for comparison of component design alternatives. The method is demonstrated using two titanium component production alternatives that represent typical design for manufacturing scenarios. The modeling method significantly increases the resolution of sustainable manufacturing metrics over conventional assessment techniques, and is one aspect of the overall decision support framework developed. Additionally, fixed sum importance weighting, weighted sum modeling, and scenario analysis were selected as easily employed and transparent design decision techniques to provide the remaining elements of the framework. The demonstration of the decision support framework for titanium component manufacturing illustrates that the sequential approach developed can assist engineers in developing more sustainable components and products. / Graduation date: 2012

Förpackning med förbättrad miljö- och säljaspekt : Ett projekt i samarbete med Primus Sverige AB / Packaging with improved environmental and sale aspects : A project in collaboration with Primus Sverige AB

Lundqvist, Alexander, Eklund, Henrik January 2010 (has links)
This work of examination describes an environmentally oriented product development aimed to develop new packaging with improved environmental and sale aspects of the products from Primus Sweden AB. The report covers the design process from the first collection of facts to the final results with a description of all methods involved in the work. The focus has been on a clear environmental awareness and the report contains a deepening of the concept life cycle assessment (LCA) for product development. In the process, the consumers’ opinions of the brand Primus and environmental profiling formed the basis for the packaging to communicate the right values such as quality, technology, environmental awareness and adventurer’s first choice. The deepening of the life cycle analysis shows that composting and other alternative treatment of the biological cycle is not possible to implement in a satisfactory way in the design process. The work results in two final concepts. The first concept consists of a protective packaging made from natural fibres, which are vacuum - thermoformed to produce attractive and unique shapes. The raw material is waste from other industries which otherwise would be of no use. The packaging can be composted but also recycled among cardboard. The second concept is both packaging and commercial product in the form of a seat pad. An outer packaging is thus replaced with a seat pad with the same life span as a Primus stove. The material is recommended to be polyamide 6.6, which can be fully recycled and has qualities that meet all customer requirements. The material can be recycled among other plastics, but a take-back system is recommended to fully recover the properties of materials. The two concepts follows the Cradle to Cradle philosophy in which polyamide 6.6 is part of the technical life cycle, and the natural fibre is part of the biological life cycle. A clear common layout have been developed to distinguish Primus and their products on the market. Arbetet resulterar i två slutkoncept.

Defining GeoDesign and the emergent role of the sustainable sites initiative (SITES) for integrative project management

Risinger, Emily Diane 16 March 2015 (has links)
This report is a discussion of the multifarious applications of the modern day geographic information system and how the universal merit of the technology across disciplines has led to the emergence of GeoDesign. The purpose of this Master’s Professional Report was to retrace the core conceptual framework and landmark events occurring in the evolution GIS technology, and how these factors have led to recent creation of new performance based rating systems and evidence-based design techniques. The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES), a new performance based rating system that has emerged in response to the call for increased knowledge and best practices lacking in LEED, is discussed; along with integrated project management. This professional report was intended to be an exploratory discussion of the larger theoretical implications fueling the shift towards mandating greater standards for sustainable design. It offers some ideas for how we should continue evolving GeoDesign moving into the next century; and outlines the importance of all new rating systems needing to acknowledge the growing importance of GeoDesign and ever advancing imagery technologies in understanding complex system processes in the future. / text
