Associação entre os níveis ambientais de poluição atmosférica e mudanças na razão sexual na cidade de São Paulo: uma abordagem epidemiológica e experimental / Association between ambient levels of air pollution and changes in the sex ratio in the city of \"São Paulo\" an epidemiologic and experimental approach

Lichtenfels, Ana Júlia de Faria Coimbra 10 October 2006 (has links)
Some studies have observed abnormal sex ratios in industrial polluted areas but a direct association between urban levels of air pollutant and sex ratio at birth has not hitherto reported. To examine whether this relationship held true, we evaluated how ambient air pollution interferes on female/male ratio in human and mice models. The effect of air pollution was addressed by determining SSR (secondary sex ratio) across pollution gradients in the city of São Paulo, using inhalable particles (PM10) as a proxy variable for overall pollution levels. To provide biological plausibility to the foregoing epidemiological observation, we designed an experimental study exposing mice in controlled chamber conditions. Results disclosed a significant negative between SSR and PM10, within a relatively narrow range of PM10 levels (31 to 61 ?g/m3). In the least polluted area the sex ratio was 51.7% (106.8) for 34,795 births recorded, and for the most polluted area the proportion decreased to 50.7 % (102.9) for 48,023 births recorded, indicating a difference of 1% in total male births. This result corresponds to a 1,180 unborn male offspring in the highest polluted areas. The group of male Swiss mice housed 10 days after birth in open top chambers exposed to air pollution, where they mate mature and non-exposed virgin female mice, produced an offspring with a 0.86 male/female ratio. The offspring of the group of mice concurrently raised in similar but filtered open top chamber was significantly (p<0.042) higher (1.34). A remarkable result was the testicular histological morphometry with a significant (p<0,020) reduction in the number of elongated spermatids and total cells (p<0,032) of exposed males. In association, a decrease in sperm concentration in the caudal portion of the epidydimus was also found in the exposed mice (46,95x106 /ml) compared to the non-exposed (54,60x106 /ml). In conclusion the findings in our study support the concept that ambient air pollution may interfere with sex distribution of exposed populations

Hatchling sex ratios and nest temperature-sex ratio response of three South Florida marine turtle species (Caretta caretta L., Chelona mydas L., and Dermochelys coriacea V.)

Unknown Date (has links)
South Florida's loggerhead (Caretta caretta), green (Chelonia mydas) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) sea turtles hatchling have environmentally determined sex. The in situ nest mean hatchling sex ratios (SR) were highly female-biased : loggerhead F=0.89) and green turtle F=0.81; leatherback's SR was nearly balanced (0.55F). Nest temperatures and SRs differed between leatherbacks and loggerhead and green turtles. The latter two did not differ. The loggerhead response parameters were estimated within biological limitations by both 50-65% of incubation and mean middle 1/3 temperature. The maximum middle 1/3 temperature was the best-fit predictor for green turtles. No best-fit sex ratio-temperature response could be identified for leatherbacks. Clutches incubating under natural conditions can vary greatly in SR ; TRT differences may account for differences among species' sex ratios. / by Micah Marie Rogers. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Gender differences in demography and labor markets

Paik, Myungho, 1971- 29 August 2008 (has links)
Gender differences in labor markets and within households have been investigated by researchers for a long time. This dissertation adds new findings to the body of gender-related empirical studies on labor markets and demographic decisions. The first essay deals with the firm size selection behavior of workers and the firms' employment patterns by size in the United States. Using the Current Population Survey, I find that the changes in firm size distribution show different trends by gender between 1987 and 2001. While the percentage of female workers in large firms has increased gradually, that of male workers has hardly changed over time. These trends are not explained by changes in the distribution of demographic and job characteristics alone. I also find that the gender gaps in size-wage premia of workers in large firms decline over the period studied. Using these results, I show that gender wage convergence is partly accounted for by the changes in size distribution and size premia. The second essay examines how internet use affects job search and match outcomes of young workers in South Korea. Using the Youth Panel surveyed in 2001, I find that workers successfully employed through internet search have a significant wage premium over those employed through traditional methods, except for referrals or social networks. The positive wage effect is pronounced among women and previously unemployed workers. I also find that new employees who have ever searched online for jobs are more likely to search for other jobs. The third essay focuses on an idiosyncratic social norm and its effects on demographic outcomes. South Koreans have traditionally considered that the year of the Horse bears inauspicious implications for the birth of daughters. Using monthly longitudinal data at the region level between 1970 and 2003, I find that in the year of the Horse, the sex ratio at birth significantly increases while fertility decreases. The last essay examines how family cultural values, proxied by lunar calendar use for birthday, affect young individuals' marriage and fertility decisions in South Korea. Employing the Youth Panel, I find that young people with lunar birthdays, regardless of gender, are more likely to be married. More interestingly, young married men with lunar birthdays are more likely to have children, while young married women are not influenced by the tradition. These results are consistent with the hypotheses that young men from more traditional families enter into early marriages and that they are more likely to have offspring at earlier ages. / text

Daoust, Simon P. 10 1900 (has links)
Landscape fragmentation and homogenization are considered to be the main causes of the worldwide decline in biological diversity. The degradation of habitat quality is mainly caused by the expansion and intensification of human land-use activities, primarily for agricultural purposes. Many studies documented the impact of landscape fragmentation and agricultural intensification on the overall fitness of animals across various taxa, but few works have studied this phenomenon in relation to trophic interactions. Here, we investigated the effects of landscape structure on the tri-trophic interactions between a bird host (the Tree Swallow Tachycineta bicolor (Vieillot)), its blowfly ectoparasites (Protocalliphora Hough), and their parasitoid wasps (Nasonia Walker) along a gradient of agricultural intensification covering 10, 200 km2 in southern Québec, Canada. The first objective was to describe the assemblages of Protocalliphora and Nasonia species found in Tree Swallow nests within our system. The prevalence of nest infestation by Protocalliphora was of 70.8% in 2008 and 34.6% in 2009. The percentage of nests containing Protocalliphora pupae parasitized by Nasonia spp. was of 85.3 % in 2008 and 67.2% in 2009. Three species of Protocalliphora were collected (P. sialia, P. bennetti and P. metallica) and two species of Nasonia (N. vitripennis and N. giraulti). Secondly, I evaluated the impact of landscape structure and agricultural intensification on the number of Tree Swallow fledglings, number of Protocalliphora per nest and the level of hyperparasitism by Nasonia. Our results revealed that organisms from different trophic levels perceived the landscape at distinctive spatial extents. This perception, however, differed based on whether the proportions of intensive or extensive culture in the landscape were considered. Furthermore, the number of Tree Swallow fledglings, the abundance of P. sialia and the level of hyperparasitism by N. vitripennis all decreased with an increase in the proportion of intensive culture in the landscape. Protocalliphora and Nasonia were more susceptible to extinction within highly intensive landscapes as they are confronted with both the direct effect of habitat degradation on their populations and the indirect effect of habitat degradation on their host populations. The last objective was to investigate how parasitoid wasps respond to environmental variability. We showed that the size of the P. sialia pupae hosts decreased in more intensive landscapes. Wasps clutch size was shown to increase within increasing host size and the sex ratio of offspring produced by N. vitripennis became more male biased as the proportion of intensive culture increased in the landscape. In addition, both female and male size was influenced by resource availability (size of host and number of competitors). Our data indicate that by producing smaller male biased clutches in the smaller hosts within intensive landscapes, females were able to respond to poor environments and maximize the size of their offspring. To conclude, this work highlights the importance of considering the landscape context of trophic interactions, as these interactions dictate local biodiversity and ecosystem function.

Specimens were collected at two-months intervals from October 2012 to August 2013, using sampling effort of two collectors for 1 hour during spring low tides. The hermit crabs collected were identified and had their carapace shield length measured (mm). All occupied gastropod shells were identified and had their shell biometric parameters (aperture width, aperture length and internal volume) measured (mm). A total of 576 individuals ofClibanarius antillensis was obtained of which 191 were males (33.16%), 140 nonovigerous females (24.31%), 125 intersex (21.70%) and 120 ovigerous females (20.83%), using seven species of gastropods. Cerithium atratum and Stramonita haemastoma were the most occupied shells, with 69.97%, and 24.31%, respectively. The average size of male ranged from 1.43 to 9.64 mm of CEC (4.29 ± 1.56 mm); 1.6 to 6.88 mm for non ovigerous females (3.79 ± 1.18 mm); 1.42 to 8.38 mm for intersex (3.69 ± 1.36 mm) and 2.1 to 7.27 mm for ovigerous females (3.76 ± 1.09 mm). Sexual dimorphism was recorded by the larger average size attained by males in relation to females (ovigerous and non-ovigerous) and intersexes. The shells of C. atratum had higher frequency of occupation by smaller organisms, especially in the size class 3.00 -] 4.00mm, while Stramonita haemastoma housed larger organisms, predominantly in the size class 4,00--] 5.00mm. There were differences in the pattern of occupation by males, not ovigerous females, intersex and ovigerous females. Males were significantly higher than the other categories. The size difference strongly influenced the shell utilization pattern, principaly in S. haemastoma, which has the largest Shell volume, being preffered by males. The other categories have occupied most significantly shells of C. atratum due to small size and lower width of the apperture width and length of the shells. Annual size-frequency distirbutions were unimodal, with non-normal distribution. The overall sex ratio was 1: 1.36 (M: F) and did not differ significantly from the expected sex ratio of 1: 1. Ovigerous females were present in all year-round. The fecundity of the studied population was of 178.14, with an average number of eggs of 178.14 ± 85.61 ranging from 51 eggs (CEC = 3.21 xvi mm) to 325 eggs (CEC = 6.77 mm), being much smaller than that of subtropical popultions of this species. The regression analysis shows that the number of eggs increase linearly with the increase of crabs shield lenght and internal volume of shells. Regression analysis showed a positive correlation between the dimensions of hermit crabs and the utilized shells.

We evaluated the following parameters: sperm quality, embryo development, the viability after cryopreservation and sex ratio of bovine embryos produced in vitro. Four treatments were performed: percoll group (90 and 45%) 4 mL, centrifuged at 700xg for 20 min; minipercoll group (90 and 45%) 800 &#956;L, centrifuged at 700xg for 5 min; miniisolate group (90 and 45%) 800 &#956;L, centrifuged at 700xg for 5 min; and minioptiprep group (30,28 and 26%) 1,2 mL, centrifuged at 900xg for 15 min. Different gradients did not affect the semen characteristics compared with the evaluation immediately after thawing (P>0,05). It was only observed a decrease in total motility in minioptiprep group (P<0,05). The cleavage rates were similar among the percoll and miniisolate groups (P>0,05). Minipercoll and minioptiprep groups were lower to percoll (P<0,05) and similar to isolate (P>0,05). At Day 7 the developmental rates were higher in miniisolate group than other groups (P<0,05). But at D8 the developmental rates of minigradients were similar to percoll (P>0,05). Among the minigradientes, the miniisolate was higher to minipercoll and minioptiprep (P<0,05). The treatments did not affect the sex ratio expected of 50:50% (P.0,05) and there was no difference among the four groups (P>0,05). Also, there was no difference in survival rates after vitrification (P>0,05). In conclusion, the miniisolate and the minioptiprep groups, in the concentration and volume used in our experiment, reached similar results to the percoll group. So, they are alternatives to the gradient of Percoll® in the routine of IVP bovine embryos.

The link between brain size, cognitive ability, mate choice and sexual behaviour in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

Corral López, Alberto January 2017 (has links)
Competition over access for mates has led to the evolution of many striking examples of morphological traits and behaviour in animals. The rapid development of the sexual selection field in recent decades have dramatically advanced our understanding of what traits make individuals more successful in attracting mates and how preferences for mates evolve over time. However, till now, research in this field has put less emphasis on the mechanisms that underlie variation in mate choice and sexual behaviour. Cognitive processes could potentially be key drivers of individual variation in mating preferences and sexual behaviours and therefore deserve further investigation. In this thesis, I used guppies artificially selected for relative brain size as the model system to study the association between brain size, cognitive ability and various aspects of mate choice. Previous studies in this model system showed that large-brained individuals of both sexes outperformed small-brained individuals in cognitive tests. Here I quantified their sexual behaviours and mating preferences to provide novel empirical data concerning the association between brain size, cognitive ability and sexual selection. In dichotomous choice preference tests based on visual cues, comparisons between large-brained and small-brained guppies showed important differences in their assessment of mate quality. These results are not driven by pre-existing visual biases caused by the artificial selection since further investigation of the visual capacity of these fish detected no differences between large-brained and small-brained individuals in their sensitivity to colour or in their capacity to resolve spatial detail. I also quantified sexual behaviour in male guppies artificially selected for relative brain size and found no difference in the behaviours of large-brained and small-brained males in a single male-single female non-competitive scenario. On the contrary, in a more complex social setting I found a reduction in large-brained males in the rate of courtship towards females and dominance displays towards other males when exposed to different degrees of predation threat and different numbers of male competitors. However, this reduction in behavioural intensity did not result in a lower access to copulation with females for large-brained males. I likewise evaluated female sexual behaviour and found that large-brained females had higher behavioural flexibility such that they decreased their receptiveness towards males more strongly under higher levels of predation threat. Together, these results provide novel empirical evidence that brain size and cognitive ability are tightly linked to mating preferences and sexual behaviours. These findings suggest that brain size and cognitive ability might be important mechanisms behind variation in mating preferences and in sexually selected traits across and within species. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Manuscript.
