Toward [Re]generative Environmental Design

Oesch, H. Frederick 18 December 2000 (has links)
Even with all the knowledge and wisdom we can acquire, combined with the best of collective intentions, it will always be the case, that ultimately we have to balance what’s desirable with what’s possible. But what’s possible always proceeds us, like a carrot in front of our nose. Yet yesterday's dreams, could have been today’s reality... and perhaps todays dreams, can become real tomorrow. “Too often budget restrictions are used as the reason why good design is not possible, but the vernacular demonstrates over and over that fine, low-budget, small-scale design is possible if the designer [builder and inhabitant] cares.” [Wayne Attoe: The Architecture of Ricardo Legorreta] In this case, the project is a new rural family residence for a couple and their son, with an adjacent cottage for their aging parents. With a collective desire to design, build and live in the most ecologically responsible manner possible, the challenge is to integrate as many environmentally beneficial principles as logistics and budget constraints will allow. The result is a collaborative choreography of site, structure, materials selection, and sequence. The appropriate criteria by which a given structural system or material should be specified, is relative to the total system performance and longevity. Optimized performance is achieved through the correct interrelationship of elements, to maximize the greatest cumulative benefit. For example, the high embodied energy and pollution from the manufacture of extruded polystyrene [XPS] insulation is undesirable. However, because of its high R-value, moisture resistance, compressive strength, and dimensional stability, it is currently the best insulation available for below grade applications. Its use makes a living sod roof practical, which may have an enormous overall positive impact, but otherwise might not even be possible. "The most elegant design solutions... those that reduce complexity while solving multiple problems... won't be found by considering each item in isolation." [Alex Wilson and Nadav Malin: Environmental Building News, 10.95] In keeping with the principles and intentions cited earlier, the decision was made to build a [passive solar / straw bale and heavy timber / living roof] home. / Master of Architecture

"Våldet har ingen åldersgräns" : En kvalitativ studie om professionella inom kvinnojourers syn på äldre kvinnors utsatthet för våld i nära relationer / "Violence has no age limit" : A qualitative study of women’s shelter professionals’ views on olderwomen’s exposure to domestic violence

Eriksson, Isabelle, Juvél, Malou January 2024 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine professionals’ understanding of older women’sexposure to domestic violence and their perspective on which circumstances that affectwhether or not older women seek and acquire support for their exposure to violence. Thestudy was conducted through a qualitative method in the form of interviews with women’sshelter professionals. The empirical data was analyzed using qualitative-content analysis. The result was analyzed using the Ecological System Theory, normalization process, ageismand the life course. The study’s result showed that older women’s exposure to domesticviolence is a widespread problem where there are many unreported cases. Older womenwere also highlighted as a particularly vulnerable group and the woman’s social networkwas shown to be crucial to her ability to change her situation. The study’s result also showedthat there are several circumstances that affect older women’s opportunities to seek supportfor their exposure to domestic violence. Former and current norms and values were shownto affect older women’s experience of being victims of violence. The preconception thatviolence does not occur within older person’s relationships affect the woman’s possibilitiesto acquire support from the society. The conclusion of the study emphasizes a need forincreased knowledge and awareness about older women’s exposure to domestic violence, both in society at large and among professionals who meet the target group, and a need todevelop support for older women exposed to violence.

Bayesian latent class modeling to evaluate the predictive value of feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus testing in apparently healthy and clinically ill shelter cats.

Urig, Hannah Elizabeth 08 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Shelters often make euthanasia or adoption decisions based on the results of FeLV-FIV point-of-care tests but given the low estimated prevalence of these diseases and imperfect test performance, this might not be a good practice because of diagnostic error. The objectives of this study were to determine the true prevalence of FeLV and FIV in apparently healthy and sick shelter cats in Mississippi, estimate predictive value of the Zoetis Witness FeLV-FIV Rapid ImmunoMigration test results at the estimated true prevalences through Bayesian latent class modeling, and formulate testing recommendations for shelters. One chapter will review the literature on FeLV and FIV. The bulk of this thesis will focus on determining the true prevalence of retroviral infection in Mississippi shelter cat populations. The last chapter will use Bayesian modeling to estimate test performance and predictive value of test results in healthy and sick shelter cat populations.

Group work with adolescent girls staying in a shelter

Netshishivhe, Tshifhiwa Marylene 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to do group work with 10 girls staying in a shelter in order to contribute to their adjustment. Lewin's field theory and the General Systems Theory were utilized to ground the group work. The epistemological framework of the study was exploratory and involved an in depth analysis of the group experiences of the participants. Unstructured interviews were also conducted with the participants. Hermeneutics as a method of analysis was applied to analyse data. The following themes captured the experiences of the girls: trust versus mistrust, connection and disconnection, alienation and isolation, emotionally overwhelmed versus security, being labeled/stigmatized, security versus insecurity, and hope versus hopelessness. This study provides a better understanding of the life worlds of girls staying in a shelter. It could also contribute to a greater awareness of the experiences of abused girls who stay in a shelter. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Magnoux, Antoine 07 1900 (has links)
Following abandonment of agricultural land, regrowth forests typically show a low diversity of tree species. One possible solution, enrichment underplanting, must consider protection against browsing, which hinders sunlight from reaching the seedlings. We examined the effects on growth of three different widths of strip opening (3, 6 or 9 meters) mixed with two protective sleeves (a small mesh and a large one). In the experiment, light levels reaching seedlings of yellow birch and burr oak range from 8 to 46 %PAR. The nine meters strip was the best to promote diameter and height growth of yellow birch, regardless of the protective sleeves used. The small mesh sleeve produced a smaller growth in all the openings, for both species in diameter and only for yellow birch in height. Burr oak diameter was also reduced by the small mesh protection. With increased light, mean length of branches and leaf area for yellow birch increased, as well as diameter for burr oak. Good growth of yellow birch makes it a species of interest for enrichment planting. A strip opening of 6 meters width could be enough to ensure artificial regeneration of yellow birch, while limiting disturbances and reducing costs. Large mesh sleeve would be best to maximize growth.

Côté, Isabelle 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the evolution of intervention practices in domestic violence shelters in the province of Québec, since their development in the mid-1970’s. More specifically, it provides an overview of 40 years of practices in these refuges, highlighting the transformations that have occurred over the years. Drawing upon a critical and feminist epistemological viewpoint and relying on a qualitative methodology, the study guiding this thesis was conducted with a total sample of 48 participants, including 8 pioneers, 7 veterans and 33 domestic violence shelter workers. Moreover, 53 documents issued by the Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale and by the Fédération des maisons d’hébergement pour femmes have also supported the current research. The conceptual framework through which the intervention practices were analyzed emerged inductively from the data and is organized around six values: security, dignity, self-determination, equality, solidarity, and social justice. Overall, domestic violence shelters in the province of Québec which drew upon a feminist perspective of the phenomenon were developed with the ultimate goal of dissolving when violence against women was eliminated. Accordingly, these resources were conceptualized as mean of social change; collectively-oriented practices were thus targeting society as a whole (Lacombe, 1990). From a “means to and end” to “an end in itself” (Murray, 1988), domestic violence shelters have been gradually structured internally with regards to the way they work with women and children, a phenomenon which can be linked to the professionalization of services. The results also suggest that the six values on which the conceptual framework of the study was built have remained deeply entrenched in the history of domestic violence shelters and are still influencing the intervention practices, as conceptualized by the pioneers and veterans during the 1970’s. However, some of the data provided in the current research suggests some shifts in existing practices are occurring. More specifically, the challenge of understanding the situation of women affected by different issues (mental health, substance abuse, aggression) through a feminist lens and the lack of theoretical references seems to further complicate the participants’ work with women who are deemed “difficult”. Moreover, the resurgence of a medical discourse, the willingness of some to involve men in shelters and the conceptualization of women in their role as mothers through a “deficit perspective” (Peled & Dekel, 2010) raises important questions about the continuing strength and influence of feminism on workers.

Le niveau A4 de Rochedane, l'Est de la France et la question des influences épigravettiennes à la fin du Tardiglaciaire / The rock shelter of Rochedane (level A4), north-eastern France and epigravettian's influences at the end of Tardiglacial

Fornage - Bontemps, Sophie 20 June 2013 (has links)
The end of glacial time is a period of change. The succession of different vegetations and faunas from the end of Lateglacial period to the beginning of the Holocene is marked by the large range and sometimes short time climatic fluctuations. Between the XIIIth and Xth millenniums BC, human societies of Western Europe experienced also significant techno-economic and social changes. This study focuses on the evolution of Younger Dryas societies and more specifically on the transformation of lithic industries and on the palaeohistoric meaning of these changes. The lithic material of the A4 level of Rochedane rock shelter (Villars-sous-Dampjoux, Doubs, France) constitutes a first rate corpus to reflect on this issue. The study of this corpus, which integrates the technological, typological and economical aspects of lithic industry, has allowed us to confirm and refine the chrono-cultural organizational model proposed those last years by A. Thévenin. Confronting results obtained from Rochedane to those groups located in bordering regions, this work has allowed the definition of “industries de type Rochedane”. The inclusion of these data within the European context has led to the understanding of population dynamics of the area and to the development of a reflection on the cultural and technical exchanges in Western Europe during the Late Glacial. Identity of “industries de type Rochedane” is double: those industries are part of epigravettian world and of Straight Blades and Bladelets Industries.

Authors such as Hannah Arendt, Paulo Freire, Dulce Critelli, M. L. Marcilio are theoretical references that allowed to reflect on the meaning of intersubjective exchanges, daily actions and social habits that develop in its context under which the humanizing conditions offers. It was developed a qualitative research inspired by phenomenology, in terms of interviews that formed six visits. The interviews were to verify the caring adults understanding about their social and educational practices when interacting with children in shelters, and took place in approximately one hour. The fed back were presented as part of the process of consultation between the researcher and interviewee and lasted two hours. This practice is conceived as an offshoot of the reflexive interview developed by Szymanski which designed to offer a span of attention and appreciation of the dialogue as a way of reflecting on educational practice activities in day-to-day. Respondents understood the moments experienced as a space for free expression of their ideas, their concepts of life, work and also, as opportunity to rethink the conditions for caregivers, educators and guardians responsible for children and adolescents who are under their care, even provisionally / Este estudo teve por finalidade investigar as práticas sócio-educativas implementadas por adultos cuidadores responsáveis pela educação de crianças e adolescentes em uma casa-lar da grande São Paulo e analisá-las como parte de um processo de socialização familiar.

Souza, Luiz Pereira de 15 June 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T20:22:53Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Luiz Pereira de Souza.pdf: 1282700 bytes, checksum: 7227c4537be96e18ed0ec2fa4621d7d6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-06-15 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The objective of this research paper is to reflect upon and comprehend the implications of the program Community based Art Education, which has been implanted in a technical assistance of the Meu Guri youth shelter, following the enactment of the Child and Adolescent Statute (Federal Law nº 8069 de 13/07/1990). As this is a new discipline for this kind of assistance, a bibliographical review, based mainly on studies of BARBOSA (1995, 1998, 1999), was done about teaching the history of Art education in formal studies. Phenomena of an interdisciplinary character, which were based on projects promoted by the shelter s assistance team, were also analyzed. The choice of a qualitative methodology sought to understand the perspectives of the participating subjects with regards to the everyday institutional life of the shelter. This way, the shelter s employees (both educators and technicians) were as much the protagonists in this process as the sheltered children and adolescents were. Thus, from our research we were able to come up with a panorama of the politico-pedagogical dynamic at the shelter, which makes evident the necessity for the promotion of new interdisciplinary assistance paradigms that prepare both the children and adolescents in this protective regimen for a more complex, equitable, and inclusive society / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo refletir e compreender as implicações da Arte/Educação Comunitária inserida no atendimento técnico do abrigo infanto-juvenil Meu Guri após a promulgação do Estatuto da criança e adolescente.
