A metamorfose na obra de Murilo Rubião: mecanismos, símbolos e particularidades / The metamorphosis in the work of Murilo Rubião: mechanisms, symbols, and particularities

Luís Eduardo Lopes Gonçalves 27 August 2018 (has links)
The present material aims to analyze some aspects about the work of the writer Murilo Rubião (Minas Gerais, 1916 - 1991), which is comprised by 33 short stories and some scattered pieces. After providing a bibliographic review of the critics on the trajectory of his production, it is intended to deepen and to give new perspectives on investigating the occurrence of metamorphosis, a frequent feature in almost all his narratives and essential to understand the particularity of the \"fantastic literature\", such as it appears in his creations. Since the metamorphosis is recurrent in that genre and its variants, this study seeks to exhibit its singularities in Murilo Rubião\'s writing and to track its defining characteristics. Furthermore, a comparative exercise is to be done between the most remarkable power lines of the metamorphosis in Rubião\'s works - its symbolizing strength and its tendency to be mere artifice.

Arland nouvelliste, poétique du recueil / Arland novelist, poetics of the collection

Proot, Helene 14 September 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study is to enlighten the topic of «  Whole  of  short  stories  »  within  the  Marcel Arland’s works. Awarded with the « Prix Goncourt » thanks to his novel L’Ordre,  this author abandoned this literary genre, chose instead of it the «  shortstory » one and finally claimed the « collectionwhole ». Using  a corpus which he himself considered as a triptych composing a  stained glasswindow : ʺLes plus beaux de nos Joursʺ, ʺIl faut de tout  pour  faire  un  Mondeʺ  et  ʺLes  Vivantsʺ,  we  will  intertwine  the  narratological,  onomastic  and  receptive  approaches  in  order  to  uncover the recurrences which are forged from short-story to shortstory. These are unobtrusive and they don’t use the return of an  identifiable  main  character.  Intermingling  biographical  traumas  and fictional narrative, Arland invites his reader to discover the moments of grace that humble characters, with, often, morbid existences, are living. Under a faultless classical quill, Arland instils  irony  and  tragedy  within  his  shortstories  in  order to let the attentive reader glimpse a world that time at last soothes. The «  collectionwhole » allows Arland to build a world in which the living and the dead become united in a common singing.

Arizhio: Tales of Glorious Manifest Destiny

Craig, Clinton 01 July 2017 (has links)
This is a book of short stories with a critical introduction. In theme, the stories seek to find the border between the Midwest and the Southwest of America by focusing on Ohio and Arizona. Some of the stories seek to exemplify “experimental” fiction, while the critical introduction seeks to define “experimental.” In addition, the introduction theorizes about the role of setting in linking collections and characterization.

Ecrire dans les marges : (r)évolutions de la nouvelle centraméricaine contemporaine (1970-2000) / Writting in the margins : (r)evolutions of the Central American contemporary short story (1970-2000)

Perdu, Vanessa 29 June 2018 (has links)
If Central American literature seems to be emerging from the ghetto it has been confined to until recently, its writers don’t equally benefit from this improvement of the isthmus’ cultural practices’ visibility. Starting from the study of the short-story or cuento, a literary genre widely developed in Central America, our research seeks to identify the multiple intra and extratextual processes which allow discerning a coherent whole inside different productions from marginalized writers, a whole that could be identified as a writing of the margins. Through a regional and transnational approach, we analyse the historical marginalization of indigenous and afro-descendant populations as well a women, before gazing at the transfer of this marginalization from reality to fiction in the literary texts. Afterwards, we take an interest in the evolution of the literary representations of these marginalized groups, allowed by the (r)evolutions of the Central American societies, relying on the confrontation between a pre-corpus of short-stories that recount the representations of the alterity from the outside, and a corpus made of eight collections of short-stories by writers coming from these marginalized groups. Finally, we observe through these collections by the Panamanian Moravia Ochoa, the Afro-Costa-Rican Quince Duncan, the Guatemalan Kaqchikel Luis de Lión, the Belizean Garifuna Zoila Ellis, the Salvadoran Jacinta Escudos, the Nicaraguan Marisela Quintana, the Honduran Lety Elvir, and the Guatemalan K’iche’ Humberto Ak’abal, how this coherent whole of writings of the margins causes a destabilization of the literary canon by trembling or even inverting its hegemonic values.

Possibility-Space and Its Imaginative Variations in Alice Munro's Short Stories

Skagert, Ulrica January 2008 (has links)
With its perennial interest in the seemingly ordinary lives of small-town people, Alice Munro’s fiction displays a deceptively simple surface reality that on closer scrutiny reveals intricate levels of unexpected complexity about the fundamentals of human experience: love, choice, mortality, faith and the force of language. This study takes as its main purpose the exploration of Munro’s stories in terms of the intricacy of emotions in the face of commonplace events of life and their emerging possibilities. I argue that the ontological levels of fiction and reality remain in the realm of the real; these levels exist and merge as the possibilities of each other. Munro’s realism is explored in terms of its connection to possibilities that arise out of a particular type of fatality. The phenomenon of possibility permeates Munro’s stories. An investigation of this phenomenon shows a curious paradox between possibility and necessity. In order to discuss the complexity of this paradox I introduce the temporal/spatial concept of possibility-space and notions of the fatal. I describe the space that materializes in the phenomenal field between text and reader, and where the constitution of possibility becomes visible. This is typically seen in the rupture that is the event, where the event in itself offers a moment of release and epistemic certainty to the characters. I argue that through this release and certainty the characters obtain a radical, audacious sense of freedom and intensity of life. The stories examined have been grouped in a conceptual order that brings into view the central qualities of Munro’s fiction such as lightness, newness and sameness. These qualities are related to the act of recognition; they are elaborated through readings of a large number of stories from all the collections, including three stories published recently in The New Yorker. The dissertation concludes by highlighting these qualities in the tour de force “Post and Beam.” I argue finally that Alice Munro’s fiction recognizes life as possibility in a moment when it shows itself in its own remarkable sameness.

Lifting the Veil Between George Eliot's "The Lifted Veil" and Henry James' "The Beast in the Jungle

Abitz, Dan 03 December 2013 (has links)
This thesis works towards establishing a legacy of influence between George Eliot’s “The Lifted Veil” and Henry James’ “The Beast in the Jungle.” Through an exploration of James’ relationship to Eliot’s oeuvre and a close study of the two works in tandem, it will become apparent the influence Eliot’s slight Gothic story held on James’ celebrated short story. Furthermore, this thesis will introduce another chapter of the growing critical tradition of studying the relationship between George Eliot and Henry James.

January 2011 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Our research tries to indicate the relationship between literature and society in the short stories of À sombra do cipreste (1999) and A coleira no pescoço (2006) by Menalton Braff, contemporary Brazilian author. The sociological reading arose because Menalton's short stories, while providing an intimate reading because of the characters' crises, poetic language, stream of consciousness, use of impressionist and expressionist technique in writing, among others characteristics, also make implicit the ways in which social relations, values and ideological orientations interfere with the characters and contribute to the economy of the text. To show the connections between text and context, we've used the analytical method of Antonio Candido, the sociological critic, based on the books Literatura e sociedade (1965) and Formação da literature brasileira (1997). Our theoretical framework also focuses on other authors that interact, directly or indirectly, with Candido's sociological critic, as João Alexandre Barbosa (A leitura do intervalo. Ensaios de crítica, 1990, e Alguma crítica, 2002), René Wellek and Austin Warren, (Teoria da literatura, 1965), Luiz Costa Lima (Teoria da literatura em suas fontes, 2002) and Octavio Paz, (O arco e a lira, 1982). We have also proposed a division of the corpus into four thematic fronts, Death/Memory, Family Relationship, Abandonment/Loneliness and Social strike, as method which would help the reading of the short stories (thirteen in total). This division, however, sought to point the main theme in each story, but did not propose a reading of each theme tight, because each narrative moves among the four groups. To accomplish this division we've used Tomachevski ("Temática", 1973) and the Dicionário de termos literários, by Massaud Moisés, 1974. From these theoretical assumptions, we sought to ascertain which social... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

January 2011 (has links)
The research is based on three theories about irony: Muecke's Irony and the Ironic (1995), Linda Hutcheon's Irony's Edge: The Theory and Politics of Irony (2000), and Beth Brait's Ironia em perspectiva polifônica (2008). The following theories about parody and laughter were also studied: Linda Hutcheon's A Theory of Parody (1995), and Henri Bergson's Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic (1987). The short-stories "Rosa, Rosa, Rosae", "Um homem de cabelos cinza", "Dôia na janela", and "Os sete palmos do paraíso" present a different use of irony, ranging from humorous to dramatic through the absurd to construct a critical perspective between the literary text and the reality to which it refers / Mestre

Searching for the Living Utterance. Elements for a Poetics of the Short Story in Marios Hakkas.

Bouyer, Jacques 06 October 2017 (has links)
In the three collections of short stories published by Marios Hakkas (1931-1972) between 1966 and 1972, the discrepancy between the texts is obvious. Too often overlooked by critics, it can be explained by a wide range of enunciative approaches: discourse-short stories establish themselves at the expense of narrative-short stories. Formally built as a narrative, the short story looks more and more like a first-person speech. The aim of the thesis has been from then on to study what determines the evolution from the narrative form, sometimes conventional and ideologically committed, to a non-dogmatic speech, focused on the subject and relieved from the narrative’s formal constraints. The heterogeneity of narrative forms is related to both the transformation of story actors, namely the narrator and the characters, and to the short story being focused on a search of knowledge. For it is a subject-enunciator who takes over from the narrator without being clearly known whether he is the author himself, affected by a cancer, or a fictional being. Engaging in an interpretation through the chaos of signs where he nearly disappears, he tries to grasp his own identity, thus contributing to the short story’s rebuilding. This genre ends up taking root in a material and on a structure, that are both mobile, turning away from any predetermined and unequivocal form, privileging in any case an organization which is open to affects and to the possible. The short story comes back to life and becomes a living utterance.
