This dissertations aims to analyze the structure and writing style of the writer Nina Horta, from her first publication in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo to her book Não é sopa: crônicas e receitas de comida, by the publisher Companhia das Letras. The relationship between literature and gastronomy found in the book is based on the conclusion that feeding is a part of people’s routine – which is, for its part, a source of inspiration for the short stories themselves. In order to achieve such purpose, we will outline a history of the short story, presenting its development and importance in Brazil, as well as its connection to newspapers. We will try to establish the transformations which happened in Nina Horta’s traditional cooking column, so as to bring it closer to the short story genre. We also intend to map the way the author connects usual facts and situations, to which everyone is subject, to the recovery and record of collective memory. For the research, the theoretical foundations about short stories will be based on Antonio Candido, Jorge de Sá and Joaquim Ferreira dos Santos. Walter Benjamim, Maurice Halbwachs and Pierre Nora will be some of the theoreticians studied in order to approach the concept of collective memory.

The construction of the character and the emergence of fantastic in romantic short stories (Charles Nodier, Joseph von Eichendorff)

Vest, Jocelyn 10 November 2017 (has links)
At the beginning of the 19th century, the instability of the world lead to a crisis of representation and to the development of what Todorv called the fantastic genre. Unlike Hoffmann's grotesque or discordant visions, Charles Nodier's and Joseph von Eichendorff's stories are characterised by a dreamlike fantastic that is close to the supernatural. This kind of fantastic is connected with the intimate life of the subject and reveals their hidden desires. Contrary to traditional criticism, it will not be analysed through the prism of the event, but through the prism of the characters and their relations. By analysing romantic short stories, we aim to contribute to a general fantastic poetry and to shed a new light on the relations between French and German romanticisms. The first part of the study brings out the presence of typical roles and recurrent modalities of character construction: their names, their physical and psychological traits, their idiosyncraties. The fantastic story focuses on the relationship between a fantastic figure and a subject. Two stereotypes evolve around the latter: a character that defends a supernatural interpretation of the facts and a character that questions their reality. The fantastic effect not only results from ontological characteristics, but also from the interactions between the characters and between the various diegetic levels. The study of these interactions reveals a form of manipulation which serves an anthropological and esthetic aim. This is how, it reveals similarities but also differences between French and German romanticisms concerning the relation between literature and religion or the consideration of dreams or madness.

[en] GRANDE SERTÃO : VEREDAS: PACT AND PROMISE / [pt] GRANDE SERTÃO: VEREDAS: PACTO E PROMESSA

LEONARDO VIEIRA DE OLIVEIRA 16 June 2010 (has links)
[en] Guimarães Rosa used to say that one can only talks about the “sertão” by means of the tale, or the legend. Considering Grande Sertão: Veredas a big-sized tale, I defend the importance of this form as an essay that seeks for the rediscovery of the New Land, by means of an illiterate, former jagunço’s speech. If our History was not strong in the sense of a philosophical contribution, geography, realm of tales, announces the thinking as a force, whose founding gesture is based on the power to make a pact with the quotidian, giving birth to Literature.

Postavy indických muslimů v povídkách hindské spisovatelky Násiry Šarmové / Characters of Indian Muslims in the short stories by Hindi writer Nasira Sharma

Čvančarová, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
The thesis aims to describe and evaluate the depiction of Indian Muslims in the series of short stories by Nasira Sharma. The writer is one of the Muslim authors who chose to write in Hindi. In her works, Sharma shares in detail but also in discretion her unique insight into the private matters of Muslim families and their coexistence with the Hindu majority on various levels. Rather than focusing on politics, she inspects the human nature and the difficulties the Muslim communities face. As a minority, they live in more challenging conditions compared to the population of purely Muslim countries. Sharma repeatedly draws attention to the root of many of these difficulties, i.e. the voluntary isolation of Islamic communities and their strict observance of traditions. Key words: Muslims, India, Islam, Nasira Sharma, Hindu literature, short story

Márcia Maria de Moraes 24 April 2012 (has links)
Even though Portuguese teachers are aware of the necessity of intensifying reading activities, they lack research material, time and more specific information for the development of reading proposals which cater for the demands of the official documents and of the reference matrix of external evaluation. Starting from this necessity, the aim of this research is to show possibilities of classroom reading activities involving the discursive genre short story so as to subsidize didactic-pedagogic proposals about this genre. The reading of short stories is recommended in Elementary, Junior and High Schools by the official documents. According to PCN (Brazil, 1998), Literature provides the possibility to confront languages in social practices and History; explore language resources and recognize social and human values. Our specific aims are: 1) identify the characteristics and specificities of this genre short story which should be considered in classroom reading activities; 2) show reading abilities that can be explored by means of the given genre, taking into account the reading abilities suggested by Reference Matrix of the Elementary School National Evaluation System and by the PISA reading proficiency levels; 3) based on a corpus composed of five short stories, give examples of reading activities developed according to the documents mentioned above, exploring the potentialities of this genre. The theoretical foundation for this research are literary studies of short stories; Bakthins socio-enunciative conception of language, especially the concept of discursive genre and dialogism; the sociocognitive reading approach and the pedagogical work with discursive genres proposed by Dolz and Schneuwly. The theoretical framework mentioned provided us with the necessary subsides for a qualitative analysis of our data, which was developed within a project called OBSERVATÓRIO/UNITAU 2011 2014 Competências e habilidades de leitura: da reflexão teórica ao desenvolvimento e aplicação de propostas didático-pedagógicas, sponsored by the Programa Observatório da Educação CAPES/INEP sob n 23038010000201076. The result of this research is the development of a didactic sequence as a suggestion for the reading of short stories which will help develop classroom reading activities since the reading of literary works, such as short stories, promotes great possibilities for dialogue between senses and knowledge. In conclusion, we believe that the work with reading didactic sequence in projects contribute to the development of students reading competence. By exploring reading abilities, the didactic sequence can favor knowledge appropriation in a significant way, enabling youngsters to become critical and to act in society.

A volta do Horla: a recepção de Guy de Maupassant no Brasil / The Horla return: the critical reception of Guy de Maupassant in Brazil

Angela das Neves 21 September 2007 (has links)
The dissertation The Horla Return studies the critical and creative reception of Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) in Brazil, the most representative French storyteller of the 19th century. This writer was read, translated and commented in newspapers Gazeta de Noticias, Correio Paulistano, Jornal do Commercio, O Estado de São Paulo (A Provincia de São Paulo, up to 1889), between 1880 and 1921, as well as in the main critical and bibliographical studies of Brazilian Literature historians, which compose the corpus of this research. Its presence is also found in ficcional works in the period which includes Brazilian Realism-Naturalism and Pre-Modernism, of which the story books of Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948) are examples. This corpus, here analysed and interpreted, discloses diverse readings made for the various critical current in vogue in Brazil. It has as background literary or nonliterary criteria, stimulated for the vast production and internal variety of the work itself and by the knowledge difusion of author\'s life. It is allowed here, therefore an additional moment of critical reading of this writer, depicted through the eyes either forgotten or unknown of Guy de Maupassant\'s scholars.

Slang in literature?: Freddy Macha`s short story `Check Bob`

Bertoncini-Zubkova, Elena January 1995 (has links)
We shall investigate the use of Swahili slang in Freddy Macha`s tiny collection of short stories Twen `zetu Ulaya (DSM 1984), and especially in his short story Check-bob This is arguably the only epistolary short story in modern Swahili literature; in fact, epistolary novels are uncommon in anglophone Afiica as a whole. In this narrative two former lovers show abuses on each other and their four letters - two by each character - unfold the story of a selfish young woman who shamelessly exploited her boyfiiend and the manner in which he paid her back with her own coin. It is interesting to note how the same events are presented from two different perspectives and hence evaluated differently.
