A History of Latter-Day Saint Screen Portrayals in the Anti-Mormon Film Era, 1905-1936

Polygamy was the key issue which acted to popularize opposition to the Latter-day Saint Church during the years 1905-1936. As a result of the continuing controversy over the so-called "Mormon Question," secular moviemakers in this period planned or actually produced nearly forty motion pictures containing Mormon characterizations. Although several important pro-LDS movies were made (some with Church assistance), the anti-Mormon photoplay dominated the silent film era portrait of the Saints. Murder and polygamy as basic themes provide clear reference to traditional literary and theatrical images. Early attempts by Utah and Church officials to censor the offending pictures were unsuccessful. Following World War I, U. S. Senator Reed Smoot was able to effect the suppression of a number of anti-Mormon productions. After the Church reaffirmed its plural marriage ban in the mid-1920s, the anti-polygamy movement died out. As the polemical film aimed at the Church was abandoned, the Saints gradually took on a more favorable screen image.

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy

My primary aim for this study is to illuminate the Ransom trilogy's inherent psychological and spiritual themes, as well as demonstrate how these themes clarify Lewis's philosophical and political goals for the text. Specifically, by investigating Lewis's mythic imagery and suffering motifs in light of psychoanalytic and theological literary criticisms, I elucidate the reasoning behind Lewis's unique—and at times, horrific—portrayal of fear, violence, and death. I also investigate how Lewis integrates his theology with the horrors of personal and intrapersonal suffering, as well as how he utilizes imagination and myth to explicate the practical (or political) implications of his theodicy. As a whole, I present a systematic study of the relationship between the Great War, myth, and the three Ransom novels, one which reveals how Lewis manipulates his personal traumatic experiences to fashion a romantic Christian understanding of evil and violence in the modern world

The Silent University at Tensta konsthall : From educational platform to community building activities

This thesis analyzes the decade-long collaboration between The Silent University and Tensta konsthall, investigating its role as a lasting, solidarity driven, educational, socially engaged art project within an art institution. Utilizing qualitative methods and institutional ethnography, the study examines the relationship between The Silent University within Tensta konsthall. The research uses three guiding questions: 1) How can The Silent University and its integration into Tensta konsthall be interpreted as a socially engaged, transformative, and performative artwork?; 2) How has the implementation of The Silent University at Tensta konsthall evolved since its inception?; 3) What is the current status of The Silent University as a socially engaged project and artwork within the context of Tensta konsthall? The first question is answered by employing Umberto Eco's concept of "open" works and Claire Bishop's analysis of socially engaged art and uses secondary sources as material. The second question is approached through interviews with Fahyma Alnablsi and Emily Fahlén. Drawing from Michel de Certeau’s concepts of "tactics" and "strategies," as well as Sara Ahmed's notions of the "stranger" and community building, the second chapter explores the project's evolving dynamics and potential tensions since its establishment. In response to the third question, the discussion synthesizes The Silent University's journey at Tensta konsthall, underscoring its evolution and present condition. Findings highlight The Silent University's classification as an "open" and transformative artwork. It has transitioned from a primarily educational focus to a more socially engaged approach within the framework of Tensta konsthall. The project's sustainability is closely intertwined with Alnablsi’s involvement and engagement, thus posing both a strength and a challenge. In essence, this thesis dissects The Silent University's role within Tensta konsthall, delving into its transformative artistic, educational, and social facets, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of the interplay between socially engaged art, institutions, and community dynamics.

This master thesis investigates the integration of stakeholder analysis into the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) for green industries, with a particular focus on its relevance within the framework of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). With a deadline for compliance by large companies operating in the European Union by 2025, urgency surrounds the need to comprehensively understand the Impacts, Risks and Opportunities (IROs). The study centers on H2 Green Steel (H2GS), a pioneering green industry in Sweden, to examine two of its key stakeholders, the society and the planet. As a silent stakeholder, the planet requires a unique approach within the DMA process. By utilizing action research methodology, stakeholders representing society and the planet are studied, offering insights that can be applied as a model for other companies undertaking similar assessments. Through a combination of data collection methods including mapping H2GS’s value chain, conducting semi-structured interviews, and utilising stakeholder analysis tools, such a power-interest grid, the study identifies key stakeholders and assesses their relationships with the company. Additionally, the study evaluates IROs related to the planet through a comparative analysis of methods outlined by the DMA guideline, ensuring comprehensivecoverage of the silent stakeholder’s perspective. The findings underscore the critical role ofcivil society stakeholders, particularly in the context of large industries within small communities. Continuous dialogue is essential for integrating societal perspectives into corporate strategies. Moreover, for planetary stakeholders, a multifaceted approach combining global research, local assessments, engagement with proxy organizations, and validation by expert groups is recommended to ensure a comprehensive understanding of related IROs. Engagement with indigenous communities, such as the Sámi in Sweden, is emphasized to address social implications effectively. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of stakeholder engagement in the DMA process, offering insights and methodologies that can aidcompanies in assessing their impacts comprehensively, thereby contributing to corporatesustainability and regulatory compliance. / Denna masteruppsats undersöker integrationen av intressentanalys i Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) för gröna industrier, med särskilt fokus på dess relevans inom ramen för Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Μελέτη κινητικών προκλητών δυναμικών με διακρανιακό μαγνητικό ερεθισμό σε ασθενείς με σχιζοφρένεια

H TMS διακρίνεται έναντι άλλων εργαλείων απεικόνισης λόγω της ικανότητάς της να ενεργοποιεί νευρώνες σε επιλεγμένες φλοιϊκές περιοχές. Η παρούσα μελέτη προσπαθεί να διερευνήσει το νευροφυσιολογικό προφίλ της μυικής προκλητής απάντησης διάμεσου διακρανιακής μαγνητικής διέγερσης (TMS) σε ένα σεβαστό αριθμό ασθενών με σχιζοφρένεια υπό φαρμακευτική αγωγή. Σε 51 ασθενείς υπό φαρμακευτική αγωγή και διάγνωση σχιζοφρένειας και 51 υγιείς μάρτυρες απόλυτα σύμφωνους ως προς το φύλο, το ύψος και την ηλικία με τους ασθενείς που συμμετείχαν καταγράφηκαν κινητικά προκλητά δυναμικά (ΜΕΡ) από τον απαγωγό μυ του αντίχειρα μετά τον ερεθισμό του αντίπλευρου κινητικού φλοιού με ένα κυκλικό πηνίο. Μετρήθηκαν: w RMTh (resting motor threshold): Ο ουδός κινητικής ηρεμίας w SI-max (stimulus intensity for maximum MEP): Η ένταση ερεθίσματος που χρειάζεται για την καταγραφή του μέγιστου κινητικού προκλητού δυναμικού w Post-stimulus silent period: Την ανερέθιστη περίοδο που επάγεται μετά από ένα ερέθισμα που προκαλεί συγκεκριμένη μυική δραστηριότητα w MEP Latency: Λανθάνον χρόνος των κινητικών προκλητών δυναμικών MEP amplitude: Το εύρος των κινητικών προκλητών δυναμικών. Συμπεράναμε, ότι οι αλλαγές στις παραμέτρους που μετρήθηκαν, μπορούν να εξηγηθούν από βασικές μεταβολές της ενδοφλοιϊκής ευοδωτικής κινητικής δραστηριότητας που ακολουθείται από διαφοροποιήσεις της φλοιϊκής αναστολής, οι οποίες μπορούν να αποδοθούν είτε στην σχιζοφρένεια είτε στην φαρμακευτική αγωγή ή στην αλληλεπίδρασή τους. / Trancranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) provides a non-invasive means for exploring physiological alterations of central motor control in a variety of neuropsychiatric diseases. The present study aimed to assess the neurophysiological profile of muscle evoked responses to a standard TMS procedure in a considerable number of medicated patients with schizophrenia. Fifty-one patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia and 51 sex- and age-matched healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Motor evoked potential (MEP) from abductor pollicis brevis muscle was elicited by stimulation of the contralateral motor cortex with a circular coil. The hot-spot was marked. Were measured: ¨ the resting motor threshold (RMTh), ¨ the stimulus intensity for maximum MEP (SI-max), ¨ the post-stimulus silent period of voluntary muscle activity and ¨ MEP latency and amplitude. The main findings were the significantly higher than normal values for RMTh and SI-max, which are both indices of neuronal excitability. In particular, patients who had ziprasidone in their therapeutic regimen demonstrated the highest SI-max for both hemispheres and highest RMTh for left hemisphere, patients receiving olanzapine demonstrated the lowest RMTh for left hemisphere and those on quetiapine showed intermediate values. Silent period was longer in the patients as opposed to controls when a RMTh-related SI was used and did not differ between the two groups when a fixed SI was used. We concluded that the observed TMS changes could be interpreted by primary alterations of intracortical motor excitability followed by defects of cortical inhibition and should be attributed to schizophrenia, antipsychotic medication or the interaction between both factors.

Les débuts du cinéma en Corée : entre projection et spectacle vivant

Cette recherche est une étude sur les débuts de l'histoire du cinéma en Corée des premières projections de films dans ce pays jusqu'en 1935, année pendant laquelle les Coréens ont commencé à produire des films parlants. Dans la première partie, nous avons étudié l’arrivée du cinéma en Corée, quand et par qui il a été introduit dans ce pays. Puis, quels films ont été vus par le public coréen et quels effets ils ont produits sur ce public.Dès les premiers temps du cinéma, chaque région du monde a essayé de surmonter les manques du film muet. Aussi, la deuxième partie s’intéresse à la particularité de la projection des premiers films muets en Corée. Le mot « spectacle cinématographique » se réfère, d’abord, à la représentation de films dans les premiers temps des débuts du cinéma. Le spectacle cinématographique sous-entend la possibilité d’un accompagnement supplémentaire, surtout sonore. En effet, les premiers films étaient « muets » et le moyen de mettre du son sur la pellicule n’avait pas encore été trouvé. De plus, souvent, il y avait aussi un concert ou un court spectacle secondaire (clown, bonimenteur, etc.) pendant, avant ou même après la projection des films. Cet ensemble autour de la projection de films représentait un véritable « spectacle cinématographique ». Nous avons étudié ce spectacle mixte présenté depuis 1919 à Séoul en Corée, et qui combine concert, projections de films, théâtre occidental moderne et boniment appelé Chosŏn Sinp'a Hwaltong Yŏnswaegŭk ou Chosŏn Kino-drama.Dans la troisième partie, nous avons présenté et analysé les données sur les films muets coréens dont nous avons pu retrouver les traces. / This research is a study of the history of cinema in Korea from the first motion pictures screenings until 1935, the year in which Koreans began making their talking films.In the first part, we study the arrival of cinema in Korea, when and by whom was the motion picture introduced in this country. Then, what films were seen by the Korean public and what effects they had on this audience. From the early times of cinema, the diverse regions of the world have tried to overcome the lack of the silent motion picture. The second part is focused on the specificity of the first silent motion pictures screenings in Korea. The Spectacle cinématographique can refer to the form of the representation of the motion pictures in the early days of cinema. The word Spectacle cinématographique implies the possibility of an additional accompaniment, especially the sound. The first films were "silent" and the way of putting sound on films had not been found yet. At that time, there was a concert or a short secondary show (clown, pitch, etc.) during, before or even after the screening of the films. We study the Spectacle cinématographique called Chosŏn Sinp'a Hwaltong Yŏnswaegŭk or Chosŏn Kino-drama which was presented since 1919 in Korea that combines the pitch, the concert, the modern western theater and the motion pictures screenings.In the third part, we report all the data concerning silent Korean films of which we still found the traces.

Duwamish history in Duwamish voices: weaving our family stories since colonization

Duwamish people are “the People of the Inside,” “the Salmon People”—Coast Salish people who occupied a large territory inside the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade range. Ninety Longhouses were situated where Seattle and several neighbouring cities now stand. Today, over six hundred Duwamish are urban Indigenous people without legal recognition as an American Indian tribe, still battling for rights promised by the Point Elliott Treaty of 1855. Portrayals of Duwamish history since the time of colonization are often incomplete or incorrect. A tribe member myself, I set out to record and present family stories concerning the period 1850 to the present from participants from six Duwamish families. I gathered histories told in the words of the people whose family experiences they are. It is history from a Duwamish perspective, in Duwamish voices. Collected family stories are recorded in the appendices to my dissertation. In my ethnographic study, I inquire as to what strengths have carried Duwamish people through their experiences since colonization. The stories reveal beliefs and practices which have supported the Duwamish people, and hopes for the future. Data was gathered using multiple methods, including fieldwork—visiting a master weaver; attending tribal meetings; and visiting historic sites—reading existing documents by Duwamish authors and by settlers, and interviewing, including looking at photos to elicit information. Five themes emerged from the data: Finding a True History; What Made Them Strong; Intermarriage; Working for the People; and Working with the Youth. These themes together constitute what I term the Indigenous Star of Resilience (see Figure One in Chapter Six). In the history of exegesis 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1 Timothy 2:11-15 have functioned as the heavy artillery against women in the ministries. From the 4th century BC, when the Church really started to develop from a dynamic underground movement of believers to a state Church organised in the image of the Roman Empire and so became the Catholic Church, women were more and more suppressed under the influence of deeply rooted Hellenistic anthropological ideas that were read into these passages. Only in the second half of the Twentieth Century, under the influence of changes in society after the sexual and feminist revolutions, changes set in that sparked the discussion about the role of women in the Church. This discussion is still continuing – in the Reformed tradition at least. These two passages, however, seem to oppose an overwhelming number of biblical themes and data that at least bring a strong nuance to the picture the two passages seem to portray. The creation of man and woman in the image of God and the protection for women against the arbitrariness of men clearly picture an original and principal equality of men and women. In the circle of disciples around Jesus Christ this becomes even more manifest. This attitude is also visible in the earliest churches. Paul expresses this in Galatians 3:28: In Christ there is no … male nor female. The passages that seem to limit the rights of women in the Church do not actually oppose this picture, but show that for the sake of the proclamation of the gospel not everything is (immediately) allowed. This dissertation attempted to interpret these two passages with the help of the grammatical-historic method. In 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 Paul personally intervenes in the apparent chaotic meetings of the cosmopolitan and charismatic congregation. He requires from different categories of participants – among them the married women that have a Christian husband – to not burden the fellowship with – in the case of the aforementioned women – their (otherwise rightful) participation in the discussion of the prophetic message during the worship service. In 1 Timothy 2:11-15 he gives his friend and student Timothy, the young pastor and teacher of the congregation in Ephesus, tools to call upon the members of the congregation not to start a revolution but to conquer the world for Christ by living an exemplary life. The context of this directive is a heresy that was particularly influencing some women that developed a prominent and domineering attitude in the Church. None of these directives or instructions of Paul talk about special ministries in the Church. It is all about attitude. For the sake of the steady progress of the gospel this attitude is to be determined by discipline and humbleness.
