Modular Vehicle Design Concept

Rue, Timothy James 23 January 2015 (has links)
Outlined herein is the Modular Vehicle [MODV] concept as a cost effective, utilitarian, and highly functional vehicle concept for the changing demands placed on a MAGTF [Marine Air-Ground Task Force] or SP-MAGTF [Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force] in the 21st century. A large focus is put on the importance of modularity and cost effectiveness of having a 24 hour configurable vehicle to a specific mission and area of operation. Off-road vehicle progression through history is presented and successful design features are noted in order to develop underlying goals for the modular vehicle. The thesis emphasizes recent technology advancements that can shift the foundations of vehicle design including wheel hub motors, high capacity batteries, solid oxide fuel cells, autonomy, structural health monitoring, energy harvesting shock absorbers, non-pneumatic tires, and drive-by-wire options. Predictions on the outlook for the technology progressions is discussed to give insight into the viability of basing a vehicle concept on these technologies. Finally, physical design bounds are presented to provide a foundation for the future design of such a vehicle. / Master of Science

Pohybové divadlo a pantomima na Slovensku / Slovak mime and physical theatre

Henzelyová, Rita January 2016 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is Slovak mime theatre. It begins with the connections to the period of its foundation and introduces topic about founder of Slovak mime theatre - Milan Sládek. The next part of the thesis focuses on Slovak amateur theatre artists and their work at the time when professional mime theatre didn't exist in Slovakia. These artists used to experiment with different kinds of theatre technics, including mime theatre. Last part is based on analysis work and performances of the modern authors - Miroslav Kasprzyk, Štefan Capko, Juraj Benčík, Tomáš Kasprzyk, Valéria Daňhová, Barbora Debnárová, Pavol Seriš and modern theatre companies - Puppet Thetare Žilina, Debris Company, Teatro Tatro and Theatre Silent Sparks. It describes how the character of Slovak mime theatre has changed within more than fifty years of existence.

An analysis of silence as an instrument for control in The Vegetarian and brown girl dreaming

Guldbacke Lund, Linnéa January 2018 (has links)
Silence, voice and power are the main themes in this essay. The purpose is to analyze how the silence is used as an instrument for control, and how it can be used strategically to take power, but also as a resistance against the power. The novel The Vegetarian by Han Kang and the autobiography novel on verse, brown girl dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson are the core of this essay. This essay focuses on how the characters break the silence, and how they use the silence strategically to find their voice in a society that systematically works to keep women, children and men silent.      The silence works in specific ways in all kinds of situations, to explore the complexity of the power dimensions a comparative analysis allows the themes to emerge and enlighten each other’s diversity. With help from Rebecca Solnit in Alla frågors moder, Audre Lorde in Your silence will not protect you and Michel Foucault’s Diskursens ordning, among other voices, the essay aims to search for how the silence can work as a strategy and what it means to speak. The essay shows how the oppressing silence is broken in brown girl dreaming, and how the voice becomes the power, but also how the silence was used in the African-American Civil Rights Movement as an act of resistance. The essays also analyze the female main character in The Vegetarian, who makes a journey from an oppressed woman where the patriarchal men violate her silence and forcing her to speak, to an existence where silence, life and growth thrives.     The silence has its own language and sometimes, it’s louder than words.

Engagement in Reading and Access to Print: The Relationship of Home and School to Overall Reading Achievement Among Fourth Grade English Speakers

Allaith, Zainab A. 03 October 2013 (has links)
The present study puts forward two models which examine the relationship between at home at school variables of (1) engagement in shared and independent reading and (2) access to print with reading achievement. Participants were fourth grade English speakers from Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia), New Zealand, England, and USA. Data from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) questionnaires and reading achievement test were used to design the two models, and Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used to analyze the data where students (Level-1) were nested within classrooms (Level-2). The results of the Engagement in Reading Model demonstrate that activities of shared reading at home and at school did not statistically significantly relate or related negatively with reading achievement. Parents helping their children with school readings emerged as the strongest negative predictor of reading achievement in the entire model. However, the relationship between how often participants talked with their families about what they read on their own and reading achievement was positive. Additionally, independent reading at school, reading for fun at home, and reading printed material (books and magazines) at home predicated reading achievement positively; reading for homework did not predict reading achievement; and reading for information and reading on the internet at home predicted reading achievement negatively. The results of the Access to Print Model demonstrate that while access to books and other reading material at home related positively with reading achievement, access to books and other reading material at school did not overall relate to students’ reading achievement. Additionally, access to the library, generally, did not relate to reading achievement; and when statistical significance was found it was not replicated in all or even most of the countries. Based on the results of the present study, it is recommended that fourth graders be given ample opportunities to read books of their own choosing independently at school, and to develop students’ habits and motivation to read for leisure during their free after school time. Additionally, children should be provided with ample access to reading material at home which is geared towards their interests.

Sentimental spectacles : the sentimental novel, natural language, and early film performance

Hart, Hilary, 1969- 03 1900 (has links)
Advisor: Mary E. Wood. xii, 181 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm. Print copy also available for check out and consultation in the University of Oregon's library under the call number: PS374.S714 H37 2004. / The nineteenth-century American sentimental novel has only in the last twenty years received consideration from the academy as a legitimate literary tradition. During that time feminist scholars have argued that sentimental novels performed important cultural work and represent an important literary tradition. This dissertation contributes to the scholarship by placing the sentimental novel within a larger context of intellectual history as a tradition that draws upon theoretical sources and is a source itself for later cultural developments. In examining a variety of sentimental novels, I establish the moral sense philosophy as the theoretical basis of the sentimental novel's pathetic appeals and its theories of sociability and justice. The dissertation also addresses the aesthetic features of the sentimental novel and demonstrates again the tradition's connection to moral sense philosophy but within the context of the American elocution revolution. I look at natural language theory to render more legible the moments of emotional spectacle that are the signature of sentimental aesthetics. The second half of the dissertation demonstrates a connection between the sentimental novel and silent film. Both mediums rely on a common aesthetic storehouse for signifying emotions. The last two chapters of the dissertation compare silent film performance with emotional displays in the sentimental novel and in elocution and acting manuals. I also demonstrate that the films of D. W. Griffith, especially The Birth of a Nation, draw upon on the larger conventions of the sentimental novel.

Combining checkpointing and other resilience mechanisms for exascale systems / L'utilisation conjointe de mécanismes de sauvegarde de points de reprise (checkpoints) et d'autres mécanismes de résilience pour les systèmes exascales

Bentria, Dounia 10 December 2014 (has links)
In this thesis, we are interested in scheduling and optimization problems in probabilistic contexts. The contributions of this thesis come in two parts. The first part is dedicated to the optimization of different fault-Tolerance mechanisms for very large scale machines that are subject to a probability of failure and the second part is devoted to the optimization of the expected sensor data acquisition cost when evaluating a query expressed as a tree of disjunctive Boolean operators applied to Boolean predicates. In the first chapter, we present the related work of the first part and then we introduce some new general results that are useful for resilience on exascale systems. In the second chapter, we study a unified model for several well-Known checkpoint/restart protocols. The proposed model is generic enough to encompass both extremes of the checkpoint/restart space, from coordinated approaches to a variety of uncoordinated checkpoint strategies. We propose a detailed analysis of several scenarios, including some of the most powerful currently available HPC platforms, as well as anticipated exascale designs. In the third, fourth, and fifth chapters, we study the combination of different fault tolerant mechanisms (replication, fault prediction and detection of silent errors) with the traditional checkpoint/restart mechanism. We evaluated several models using simulations. Our results show that these models are useful for a set of models of applications in the context of future exascale systems. In the second part of the thesis, we study the problem of minimizing the expected sensor data acquisition cost when evaluating a query expressed as a tree of disjunctive Boolean operators applied to Boolean predicates. The problem is to determine the order in which predicates should be evaluated so as to shortcut part of the query evaluation and minimize the expected cost.In the sixth chapter, we present the related work of the second part and in the seventh chapter, we study the problem for queries expressed as a disjunctive normal form. We consider the more general case where each data stream can appear in multiple predicates and we consider two models, the model where each predicate can access a single stream and the model where each predicate can access multiple streams.

Biographie d'un artiste dramatique oublié : romuald Joubé (1876-1949) / Biography of a forgotten artist : Romuald Joubé, 1876-1949

Joubé Poreau, Martine 28 March 2014 (has links)
This project has been conceived to get out of oblivion Romuald Joubé (1876-1949). He was a professional dramatic artist and an ancestor of mine. Because of this familial and collective forgetting of the great works of Joubé, the main goal of this thesis is to reveal his biography. He became a famous and talented theatre and silent movie actor by crossing two world wars. This biography presents the evolution of Joubé as a young stage actor as well as the evolution of theatre and cinema during the first part of the twentieth century. From Saint-Gaudens (France) to Paris, and from Odéon to the Comédie-Française, Joubé met some of the great actors such as André Antoine, Sarah Bernhardt or Abel Gance. Even if he became famous at Paris, he did not forget his native region: Southwest of France and the Pyrénées. He created an open-air theater in this region. Until the end of his life, he promoted the open-air theatre. Joubé could play many different roles. He was also a silent film actor. Then in 1936, he got interested in radio. He accepted then sound films with Sacha Guitry. Tradition and modernity characterize this major and forgotten actor of the twentieth century. The biography of Joubé also brings us into the lives of artists of this period. Finally, Joubé, as an actor but also as a painter, a draughtsman and a defender of Gascon language. He will fight up to his dead to defend the quality art for all, without over forgetting his family and his region.

Repeating Despite Repulsion: The Freudian Uncanny in Psychological Horror Games

Jespersdotter Högman, Julia January 2021 (has links)
This thesis explores the diverse and intricate ways the psychological horror game genre can characterise a narrative by blurring the boundaries of reality and imagination in favour of storytelling. By utilising the Freudian uncanny, four video game fictions are dissected and analysed to perceive whether horror needs a narrative to be engaging and pleasurable. A discussion will also be made if video game fictions should be considered in the literary field or its own, and how it compares to written fiction in terms of interactivity, engagement, and immersion.

See the wallflowers : Primary school teachers’ views on how the learning environment can include quiet pupils in conversations

Degiorgi, Cecilia, Jonsson Rathjen, Mikaela January 2023 (has links)
