The Peasant Imagined : Social Imaginary and Social Order in Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Century SwedenHåkansson, Jakob January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate how the Swedish peasantry was perceived by the Swedish Burgher, Clerical, and Noble Estates during the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. By studying the Diet protocols of each Estate from three Diets, and by applying the concept of social imaginary, it considers what a peasant was perceived to be, who was perceived to be a peasant, and how these perceptions changed. The period under investigation is a time when the orders of society began to change and the peasantry underwent a process of radicalization. It is also a time when the way people perceived themselves changed, from a perception of “the self” heavily influenced by the collective, to a more individualistic one. These circumstances made the Estates question the traditional ideal of what a peasant was, re-writing the social script of the peasantry to include new attributes, duties, and virtues than it did a century earlier. Three main categories are used and aims at exploring the peasantry’s perceived social dignity, political role, and economic function, each representing its respective order in estate society. The study has shown how the Estates perceived peasants to be simple, uneducated, and foolish in the early stages of the Age of Liberty (1718–1772), and that the social dignity of a peasant was fundamental in conceptualizing what and who a peasant was. This changed towards the end of the century and became much more diverse and complex during the early nineteenth century. By the early 1820’s, the Noble and Clerical Estates perceived them as competent, responsible, and as being capable of betterment and upward mobility in a spiritual and worldly sense. The Burgher Estate perceived them as self-righteous, rustic, and intrusive as they had begun to invade their cities, steeling their livelihood, and thus threatening their entire existence as an estate. The economic transformations of the period also proved how the economic function of the peasantry was now to a larger degree emphasized as the determinative factor of what social dignity and political role they should have. / <p>The author has changed name to Jakob Starlander.</p>

Shadow and Voice: The Vampire's Debt to Secular ModernityMaynard, Luke R. J. 18 December 2013 (has links)
The past few years have seen a renewed critical interest in the vampires and vampirism of English literature, owing both to their growing influence in popular culture and a more inclusive reordering of the literary canon. Much of this recent work has typically approached vampirism through a psychoanalytic lens inherited from Gothic criticism, characterized by a dependence on Freud, Lacan, and Foucault, and often by a model of crisis in which these supernatural figures of terror are supposed to symbolize cultural anxieties with varying degrees of historicity.
This dissertation builds upon the narrative of secularization set out in Charles Taylor’s recent work, A Secular Age, to answer the need for a new and alternative narrative of what function the vampire serves within English literature, and how it came to prominence there. The literary history of vampirism is reconsidered in light of the new sociological observations made by Taylor, hinging upon two key methodological principles: first, that Taylor’s new secularization narrative has the potential to reshape the way we think of literature in general and our literary relationship to the supernatural in particular; and second, that the fiction generated during this period of upheaval has much more to tell us about secularization, broadening our understanding of the ideological shifts and changing relationships to the supernatural that brought forth this uniquely modern monster in literature.

The era, the discourses, the love : structural and historical approach of indifeerence to things of loveVictoria, Bernard 11 July 2015 (has links)
Based on the works of Jacques Lacan and Cornelius Castoriadis, we propose an articulation of structure and history in order to build a psychoanalytic approach of the impacts of our era — in its dual determination by consumerist market logic, and the scientific discourse — on loving relationships. We have been able to propose a psychoanalytic, structural and historical approach of the causes, the conditions and consequences of indifference to things of love induced by capitalist discourse structure and the socio-historical purview witch is linked to it.

Análisis de la influencia del hedonismo en centennials mediante la construcción de personajes retratado por la serie sex education / Analysis of the influence of hedonism on centennials through the construction of characters portrayed by the Sex Education seriesRoca Yucra, Carla Pierina 10 June 2020 (has links)
Hedonism and Centennials are two words that converge to create an actuality in which sex has been trivialized and diverse new forms of communication have been created based on fixed characteristics of today's adolescents.
This work aims to show the manifestation of hedonism in the construction of the Centennial characters, portrayed by the Sex Education series, and justified on the basis of the social imaginary of characters and their evolution. In this sense, the specific objectives are, firstly, the identification of the centennial characters and their relationship with hedonism; secondly, the identification of the character's construction with respect to its identity and context. The research provides different perspectives on the presence of hedonism in the new generation and the effects it generates in their social relations and their imaginary world. Five out of eight chapters of the first season of the Sex education series are analysed, chosen according to the criteria studied, such as the use of stereotypes for the construction of characters and the evolution of characters according to the evolutionary process and their relationship with a sexual problem.

Since 1989, nationalism has once again become a major discursive theme in European public and political spaces. Nationalism has thus become “banalised” (according to Michael Billig), relegating the complexities of social histories to mere cultural ‘Others’. The common origin of the resulting social and symbolical tensions can be found in the promotion of State-centred nationalist discourses. The dominant discourse on national identity aims for the reproduction of a continuity of traditional national values and histories in reaction to the threat it perceives in the presence of multiple ‘Others’. This transversal study presents a social-historical analysis of the endurance of national imaginaries and of the modern paradigm of exclusion they reproduce. By elaborating a theoretical framework as an open system (Edgar Morin) to make sense of the complex relations between texts, ideology and the social imaginary, the aim of the thesis is the analysis of the dynamic symbolic promotion, expression and contestation – negotiations of social signification – of national imaginaries. Basing on the study of texts expressing these negotiations, the formation and consolidation of British, French and Polish national imaginaries in the late modern period is articulated through this framework. The analysis then focuses on mainstream political discourses in Britain, France and Poland between 2004 and 2009 which is contrasted with the analysis of contemporary texts of popular culture.

Previous issue date: 2006-02-03 / Pontif?cia Universidade Cat?lica de Campinas / The present investigation takes part in a group of psychoanalytical researches on the social imaginary, focusing on the problems regarding adoption. Articulation happens around fieldwork constituted by individual encounters, with teachers of elementary and high school education, during which the procedure of picture story with a topic was used as a dialogic mediator. Psychoanalytical narratives from these encounters allowed a comprehensive elaboration of the communications obtained, from which are distinguished unconscious fields organizers of the imaginary: abandonment, lies, the uncanny and the psychopathology. Abandonment is inserted in a net that finds, in the issues of delivery of the child for adoption and in the experiences of helplessness and rejection, other significant knots. Lies are connected to the conducts of hiding the story of the adoption and the family truths. The uncanny seems to be projected in the adoption as a form of leaning over the unknown, possibly in consonance to the dimensions feared of self. At last, the last campo points to the phenomenon of creation of psychopathological theories, through which insuperable emotional frailties are attributed to the adopted children. Such verifications make us question ethically the current social practices prevalent regarding the adopted child.

Previous issue date: 2014-08-08 / Instituto Presbiteriano Mackenzie / This dissertation presents a study of the theology of worship proposed by John Calvin, seeking to highlight the aspects that foster the preponderance of the community as opposed to the individuality seen in contemporary worship, and, whenever possible, pointing out the reasons why the Reformer excelled in the emphasis of the collective. The research moves between two fields of knowledge, Religious Studies and Theology. The text, in principle, focuses on the Religious Reformed Movement of the sixteenth century, describing the synthesis in Calvin s thought, especially his understanding of worship. We also make an examination of the evolution, or modification, of Calvin's theology of worship, particularly in England, Scotland and the USA, together with a comparative analysis of the Genevan Calvinist Worship and Puritan Worship, showing that the second, with its individualistic theological nuances, modified the first, and thus significantly gave special contribution to individualism seen in the liturgy of the contemporary Calvinist worship, and influenced in building the social imaginary of the followers of this branch of Calvinism and its heirs.

Construção de saberes e significações imaginárias na trajetória de vida de uma alfabetizadora cega / Knowledge construction and imaginary significations in the life trajectory of a blind literacy class teacherOliveira, Biviane Moro de 28 March 2008 (has links)
This paper has been developed in the research line called Teachers Education, Knowledge and Professional Development, of the Post-Graduation Program in Education, at the Federal University of Santa Maria. It has attempted an approximation to imaginary significations and knowledge constructed throughout the life of a blind literacy class teacher. The main theoretical references have included the social imaginary, teacher s knowledge, the visual deficiency and the use of life histories as research sources. To carry out this study, the qualitative approach and the biographical method of life history have been employed to search for this teacher s history of knowledge construction and imaginary significations, through her autobiographical narratives and memories of her experiences as a blind literacy class teacher who has worked with the Braille system. From social imaginary theoretical contributions, it has been concluded that the subject of this research mobilizes her students, peers, school and the Association of Blind People to establish instituting significations, so as to show, from her life experience, some possibilities of instituted significations, which deny possibilities of professional exercise to the visual impaired and which, in a certain way, prevent both their social inclusion and total citizenship. In relation to the teacher s knowledge, it was verified that this knowledge is built through both personal and teaching experiences. Because of that, personal and experiential knowledge has prevailed. This research has also pointed out specific issues related to educational aspects of visual impairment, such as literacy through the Braille system, orientation and mobility, and use of specific resources. This study has enabled this life history, in its singularity, to contribute towards new proposals in terms of teachers education, teaching as a profession, and inclusion.
