Guidelines for a training and development programme for managers at the Haven Right Shelter welfare organisationKamfer, Anne Ruth 28 February 2005 (has links)
The growth and expansion of the Haven Night Shelter Welfare Organisation has been accompanied by a pattern of emotional and negative dismissals and resignations of senior managerial personnel. The research project explores how the management capacity of the managers could be enhanced through training, development and maintenance functions of human resource management. The literature study focused on reviewing outcomes-based education, training and development methodology. The empirical study involved examining the biographical information of the research participants. It also sought to explore the organisational culture by identifying managerial competencies of skills, interpersonal relationships, management style, attitudes and beliefs. Investigating the knowledge base of participants, included exploring human resource management practices, training and development legislation and labour relations. The conclusions and recommendations are based on the findings of the survey as completed by the participants. The guidelines for a training programme include outcomes-based learning principles to raise morale, skill and knowledge. / Social work / M. Diac. (Social Work)

Perceptions, challenges and coping strategies of social work managers regarding their management functionsGunda, Edison 02 1900 (has links)
The goal of this study was to explore the perceptions, challenges and coping
strategies of social work managers regarding their management functions.
Management is vital for growth and survival of the social welfare sector and this can
be realized if social work managers understand and are able to execute their
management functions. This study utilized a qualitative research approach to
unpack the perceptions and challenges of social work managers. Explorative,
descriptive and contextual research designs were used to explore how social work
managers cope in their settings. Data were collected from social work managers in
the NGO sector and the Department of Social Development, through semistructured
interviews. A sample was selected by using purposive sampling. Data
were analyzed using Creswell’s (2007:150) analytical spiral model, and data was
verified using Guba’s model in Creswell (2007:150). Relevant social research ethical
issues were fully considered in this study. The study revealed that there were social
work managers who had the basic understanding of what social work management
entails, whilst there were also those who did not understand what is meant by the
concept ‘social work management’. In this study it was found that social work
managers perform key management functions and roles such as planning,
organising, leading, controlling, supervision, fundraising and financial management,
coordination of services and performance management. The study revealed
common challenges which are faced by social work managers. These challenges
include a shortage of human resources, physical resources shortage, a lack of
knowledge on management and a lack of adequate funding. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

Transformation management in a welfare organisationVenter, Hendrik Jacobus 30 November 2002 (has links)
The research study focuses on transformation management in a
welfare organisation and is aimed at developing a framework for
a prospective model for management of a transformation process
in a welfare organisation.
The research was directed by two components, the nature, and the
management of transformation, and was initiated with a literature
study on these two concepts. The research study is limited to
the Gauteng area, and only child and family welfare organisations
which were already active participants of a transformation
process were targeted.
Data collection process was initiated by means of a structured
interview schedule, completed by managers/senior social workers/
Board chairpersons (the target group). Results of the study
indicate that a majority of the twenty targeted organisations had
undergone an unstructured transformation process. A structured,
well formulated, and planned transformation management process
was required as a guideline, with a view to developing a
prospective model for the management of a transformation process
in a welfare organisation.
Results and conclusions drawn from this study can be generalised
in the broader spectrum of welfare organisations for the
management of a transformation process. Further research is
needed to develop the required model. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Social Work)

Bestuurstake van vrywilligers as lede van Afrikaanse Christelike Vroue vereniging bestureVan der Merwe, Christina Geretta 30 November 2004 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The purpose of the study is to examine the extent and demands volunteers have in a managerial function. Volunteers are responsible for the management of the branches of the ACVV, functioning in a specific environment. The variables of these environments have a definite influence on the functioning of a branch and place specific demands on the members. The group of respondents consisted of chairpersons of branches of the ACVV in the West Coast region. The findings of the empirical studies are that all levels of the environment bring pressure to bear upon volunteers. The demands placed upon them have a bearing on the managerial tasks and have a negative effect on the willingness of volunteers to serve as board members. It is imperative that training and development of volunteers, in welfare organizations, must be ongoing in order to empower and give them confidence for these managerial tasks. / Social Work / M. 'n Kultuursensitiewe benadering tot supervisie in maatskaplike werkStoltz, Wilma 28 February 2004 (has links)
The importance of supervision and the influence of this relationship on the process of supervision, is often underrated. In order for this process to be implementede success-fully knowledge of the different functions including the administrative- educational- and supportive functions is of the utmost importance. It is also becoming increasingly impor-tant that note should be taken of the impact that cultural differences has on supervisor-relationships, the supervisional process and the effectivity of rendering of service as so-cial service organisations increasingly consists of diverse staff members rendering service to a diverse clientelle.
This descriptive study has as goal to describe the impact of cultural differences on the practice focussing on the function of supervision and the establishment of diverse organisations and problems arising in this connection. Carefull attention will be paid as to how respondents experience cultural differences in the working environment, their problems and their opinions of how to solve these problems effectively.
Conclusions and recomendations were made, which focussed on problems arising as result of cultural differences. The compilation of tentative guidelines which could be usefull in establishing supervision services with greater cultural sensitivity were given. / Social Work / M.Diac (Maatskaplike Werk-Rigting)

”Distinguishing features of visionary non-profit organisations”Berry, Regan 30 June 2005 (has links)
The researcher undertook exploratory research to see whether characteristics of visionary organizations, as discovered in research undertaken by Collins and Porras (2000), are present and applicable to non-profit organizations in Gauteng, South Africa.
The characteristics are:
- a core ideology (core purpose and core values)
- big hairy audacious goals
- a cult-like culture
- purposeful evolution and continuous self improvement
- management continuity
- alignment.
A schedule was used to interview directors of ten non-profit organizations. Some staff in each organization were given a questionnaire to see whether their answers correlated with the director responses.
The research indicated that most characteristics are present, to some degree, in the non-profit organizations. These characteristics could however be explored more thoroughly in further research. The research includes recommendations for management of non-profit organizations to implement, to become visionary organizations. / Social work / M.A. (Social Work)

An evaluation of governmental health and welfare interventions in response to HIV/AIDS in South Africa: 1997–2005Mphou, Lejone Jonas 11 1900 (has links)
The point of departure in this study was to find a logical structure to answer the research question. In order to do this, the central concept adequate was defined, clarified and linked to the research question while on the same score, concepts related to it were also defined and clarified. The objectives of the study and the conceptual instruments were combined and thereafter linked to HIV/AIDS as a real life phenomenon. The literature reviewed assisted in accessing sources relevant to the topic, in setting the theoretical framework for the study and selecting appropriate tools to measure and evaluate the adequacy of governmental health and welfare interventions. The theoretical framework of the study is informed by the idea that the Government has obligations in terms of a social contract with society. On this basis, a conceptual instrument was built, bearing in mind section 2 of the 1996 Constitution. The evaluation criteria used involves collection and sifting through information and data while on the same score, making judgements about the validity of information obtained and deriving inferences from such information. / Public Administration and Management / M. Veranderingsbestuur in 'n welsynsorganisasie / Change management in a welfare organisationPienaar, J. J. (Jacobus Johannes) 11 1900 (has links)
is onderneem.
The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of the process of change on the
functioning of a welfare organisation. A literature and empirical study was done. Research
showed that reasons for change were primarily of an external kind, that a high percentage
of respondents not always understand the necessity or reasons for change, and that most
of the respondents experienced the communication channels and information not always
as open and clear. The research shows that motivation of ground level social workers by
managers must under no circumstances be under-estimated. The way in which
information was given, was experienced positively, but workers needed more support with
it from management. During the research a limited degree of resistance was further
found. Resistance experienced by workers became less when they were part of the
process, are prepared for change, their security not threatened and the reasons for
change are known to them. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Maatskaplike Werk-rigting)

'n Beplannings- en beheermodel vir welsynsorganisasies / A planning and control model for welfare organisationsReynolds, Coenraad Christoffel 06 1900 (has links)
welsynsorganisasies. Die ondersoek is onderneem binne die konteks
van die ontwikkelingsnavorsings- en benuttingsparadigma.
Die proses van die ontwikkelingsnavorsingsparadigma verloop
volgens 'n analise-, ontwerp-, ontwikkelings-, evaluerings-,
beplanning en beheer as bestuurfunksies.
beplanning en beheer by agt welsynsorganisasies gedoen. Agt
iii
omgewingsveranderings te reageer / Social Work / D. Phil. (Maatskaplike werk)
