Ontologies and knowledges of autonomous resistances in Barcelona: An ethnographic analysis of Can Batlló

Ferrer Sanz, Maria N. January 2018 (has links)
This research is born from a conscious reflection on the roles and judgements that traditional scientific analyses imprint in its objects of study, especially in the field of social movement theory. It aims to understand whether and, to which extent, autonomous resistances knowledges constructed on the ground challenge the academic interpretations of those movements. For this reason, the first part of this dissertation focuses on unravelling how traditional ontologies have been built and underpin majoritarian scientific analyses. Thus, I review most current debates in the field. Traditional social movement research tends to focus on dualist discussions related to new and old social movements, European and American approaches, behavioural or cost-benefits views, structural and agency approaches, identity-based interpretations, etc. In opposition to that, I argue for an ontology breaking with dualist views, placing Deleuze’s concept of difference at the centre of my argument and feminist ontologies of the body as the medium affecting the political experience. I propose an autoethnographic method focused on presenting a cartography of urban resistance movements composed by difference and rhizomatic relationships in opposition to the homogenisation of ideas and demands of academic research for pilling up patterns, variables or categories. Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the BwO is presented here as a theoretical tool that helps to introduce the case study in relation with its contexts, relationships, affects and networks. The second part of this research narrates and analyses how the proposed theory is unwrapped in the field. In doing so, I analyse my participation with and from within one of those collectives, Can Batlló and, more specifically, a project named La Fondona. Can Batlló is an autonomous and self-organised social centre in the neighbourhood of La Bordeta in Barcelona with which I worked during six months between 2013 and 2014. Throughout this period, I participated actively not only in Can Batlló but also in the actions and events that took place in the neighbourhood of Sants-Montjuïc and Barcelona. Hence, I present an analysis of the internal processes, relations and knowledge-practices as well as the relationships that this collective maintains with the community, its sociopolitical space and historical context. I argue those relations are constructed through rhizomatic principles as well as drawing from feminist approaches which put life and the body at the centre of their arguments. These outcomes will be finally reflected in chapter IX of this dissertation under the lenses of the research question posed in this thesis. That is whether current urban resistances challenge majoritarian social movements’ analyses. / Marie Curie Fellow Program and University of Utrecth

THEORIZING WHEN USER REACTION TO IT IMPLEMENTATION IS NEITHER RESISTANCE NOR ACCEPTANCE, BUT CONSTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR: A CASE STUDY OF HEALTHCARE IT IMPLEMENTATION

Mohajeri, Kaveh 01 January 2014 (has links)
The prevailing discourse of “resistance vs. acceptance” in IT implementation research mostly personalizes the issue as “users” versus IT implementers (e.g., managers, CIOs, CMIOs, etc.). This kind of discourse has created an IT-implementer-centric attitude among IS scholars and practitioners. The IT-implementer-centric attitude, while embraces “acceptance” as a desirable reaction almost unconditionally, frequently holds for minimizing or more conservatively suppressing “resistance” to IT implementation. In other words, the mainstream IT implementation research, almost completely, treats “users” as passive recipients whose choices, as they face pre-developed/pre-designed/pre-rolled-out technology being implemented, can only be defined on a spectrum from “acceptance” to “resistance.” The current research study, however, offers an alternative perspective that views the “resistance vs. acceptance” duality “from the other side,” i.e., from the perspective of the supposed “resistors” or “acceptors” themselves. Through a review of the literature, this study first identifies major drawbacks of the extant theories and models of IT implementation research. Next, drawing on an interpretive paradigm of research (more specifically, phenomenological sociology), this study investigates a real world case of healthcare IT implementation. The results of the aforementioned literature review and case investigation subsequently form the basis for the study’s proposed theoretical account, which provides an unprecedented understanding and explanation of how actors representing different stakeholder groups, among which people who are routinely called “users” are but one group, experience IT implementation as they live their everyday lives. The proposed theoretical account is lastly used as a guide for crafting both practical and research prescriptions with respect to managing IT-involved change occasions.

Att arbeta för och med elever med språkstörning / To work for and with pupils with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

Anderlund, Anna, Jönsson, Marika January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the present study is to examine how schools organize the work with and for pupils with language disorder.  Further, it aims to find which role the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and principal, respectively may have in the work with the pupils and give an insight into what knowledge about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) personnel in schools have. The background of the study is that knowledge about DLD begins to diffuse at schools in Sweden today, but there is still a great deal of ignorance about what the diagnosis entails and how to work inclusive with these students in the classroom. The study was conducted with a qualitative method, semi-structured interviews with six special needs coordinators and five principals. The theoretical framework consist of Etienne Wenger’s Social theory of learning and the analysis was performed through a thematic content analysis. The results of the study indicate that none of the schools in the study have a particular organization for pupils with DLD. Half of the informants argue that they would like increased collaboration with speech therapists. The collaboration with guardians is another area that needs to improve in the schools. Enterprise in relation to engagement is most prominent in the schools, according to the analysis based on Wenger’s social theory of learning. All informants recognize gaps of knowledge regarding the definition of DLD, and how to work with pupils with the disability. Further education on the subject was requested by all informants.

Economia, cultura e normatividade. / Economy, Culture and Normativity: the discussion of Nancy Fraser and Axel Honneth about recognition and redistribution

Bressiani, Nathalie de Almeida 18 August 2010 (has links)
The debate about redistribution and recognition has as its central theoretical references, Nancy Frasers and Axel Honneths work and, mainly, the book Redistribution or Recognition? A political-philosophical exchange, a work that gathers contributions from both of them. Each of these authors ascribes, though, a different meaning to those two concepts that are, besides, mobilised by them in distinguished ways. With the aim to explore this debate within and from Fraser-Honneth controversy, we seek to discuss the comprehension that both authors sustain regarding the relations between redistribution and recognition, in its different levels of analysis. Establishing as our guiding line the question concerning the possibility that the set of existing injustices be comprehended only through the concept of recognition, or if to do so is necessary to call upon the conceptual par redistribution and recognition, we aim to pinpoint that although questions regarding the normative basis of their theories and the importance or character they assign to the social conflicts might be of fundamental importance the dispute between the monism endorsed by Honneth and the dualism advocated by Fraser has its center the different social theories developed by those authors, through which they seek to understand the relations between culture and economy and to bring foreword theories of power that can diagnose the existent social pathologies or injustices. Injustices that, according to them, need to be properly analysed within social interactions, also pervaded by power relations.

It is important to reach such universe for it s the first step to the effort of elaborating public policies towards this segment, as well as thinking of strategies to include them into society in a warm manner. Thus, a brief study on the history of childhood from its conception since Feudal Ages until Contemporary times was carried out, outlining whatsoever the aspects of childhood in Brazil and in the city of Goiânia. The methodology was based upon the social-historic approach as proposed by Vigotski, developing a documental research followed by an empirical research. The first utilized the scholar applications of 203 children from a nongovernmental institution (Sociadade Cidadão 2000). The empirical part consisted of the evaluation of 81 questionnaires and the interview of 12 children (of both genders), picked from the ones who answered the questionnaires. The questionnaires were intended to allow a better comprehension of the routine and lifestyle of the surveyed children, while the interviews provided in depth information based on the questionnaire answers, allowing for a new direction on the constitution of these children subjectivity - as it was noticed that childhood playing and household duties are central in their socializing process. The surveyed children presented diverse family patterns, where grandparents are present and important figures in their lives, whereas the mothers are the most referred to concerning child education. These children associate positive feelings concerning their family, cooperate on household duties and have child playing as part of their routine. Most of these children report suffering some kind of violence, but define being a child as being able to play and have fun. By child playing they socialize with their pairs, learn rules and deal with limits previously established by the society they belong to in a playful, and yet serious, manner. The household duties are also part of their socializing process, however gender issues play an early role in this matter.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Reginaldo Pereira Franca Junior.pdf: 1819541 bytes, checksum: 6d1fc9ffc4c52297fd062845de058ee3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-06-01 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The objective of this work is to review the process of ownership and objectification in Marx s social theory and its ethical-political effects on the social workers ethical-political professional project. It is also intended to analyze the contribution of Marx s social theory for the profession and its subsequent materialization in daily life of professional work. It is a study of qualitative approach, including a literature review and a field research, through semistructured interviews with three social workers one of the healthcare area, another a teaching and a third of the Judiciary in the city of Uberaba, MG, in the year 2012. This work was justified by questioning the forms of appropriation of the Marx s social theory by social workers and the forms of objectification of the ethical-political professional project in daily professional work. It was noted that there is a degree of ownership of Marx s social theory by social workers, as well as obstacles in the process of vocational training that fell on these theoretical-methodological bases deficiencies. The limitations for the objectification of professional project in daily work come from the relative difficulty in taking ownership of Marx's theory. The subjects understand the centrality of contemporary Social Service professional project, but they are limited in this objectification, given the social relations of capitalist production and institutional boundaries. It was noted that the difficulty in joining the class project cannot be attributed solely to institutional or capitalist limits; that project is to be thought of as a compromise to overcome the determinations and locate man as the measure of all things / Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o processo de apropriação e da objetivação da teoria social de Marx e seus rebatimentos no projeto ético-político profissional junto aos assistentes sociais.

Work and social theory in collective health: an analysis of the Marxist interpretation on health work

Souza, Helton Saragor de 11 June 2019 (has links)
The present thesis refers to the theoretical research about the main works of authors of the current of classic Marxist interpretation of work and social theory in health. In this sense, the central elements of this chain are approached with reference to the bibliography of authors from the intellectual contexts, French and Italian. It follows from the research that the incorporation of other intellectual means enabled the development of an original health social theory from pluriparadigmatic associations of critical theories of modernity, in which the contradictions stemming from the rational domain of corporeal nature and its environment in capitalist sociability are central elements of the social process of medicalization and commodification. The interpretative hypothesis developed suggests that two main theses of the Frankfurt School, the criticism of Walter Benjamim\'s progress and the critique of instrumental technical rationality of Adorno and Horkheimer, are fundamental in the elaboration of the social health theory that constitutes the interdisciplinary field of collective health. From the perspective of a critical balance of Marxist interpretation, we highlight the analytical transition from medical practice to the theory of the health work process with the identification of contributions and limits for the apprehension of the work of occupations in health in the contemporary process of work and social relationship in health.

Erving Goffman

10 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Implementing New Generation Catalog in an Academic Library : Users’ Views and Wishes

Trianti, Alexandra January 2015 (has links)
In an accelerating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) environment, academic libraries’ catalogs have always been part of students’ and faculty members journey of resources discovery. The master thesis intents to focus its interest in Information Systems (IS) ground related to the implementation of a new search engine at the University of Piraeus Library. The Library wants to change the search features of its traditional online services and to implement a new discover tool with Web 2.0 characteristics. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate users’ views and desires interest according to their scholarly needs and expectations about VuFind in order to facilitate the Library to customize the integration. Therefore, critical systems theory will be employed for “therapeutic” reasons to enlighten the Library’s users about their current situation. Qualitative analysis is expected to recognize discrimination against traditional Library’s search engines. Qualitative data of the user impression and reaction when operate with the VuFind interface will lead to recommendations for enhancement and improvements. Findings will assist implementers to modify the discovery layer by meeting users’ needs of the academia community. The research will collect data through qualitative method on how participants operate with the VuFind search engine merging librarians’ professional views and users’ expectations and propositions. Participatory Design (PD) will be built upon Future Workshop method.
