Jag är norsk men min pappa är från Kuba : En studie av tvärkulturella uppväxtförhållanden / I'm Norwegian but my dad's from Cuba : A study of cross-cultural upbringing

Ruud, Linda January 2018 (has links)
My aim of this study is to investigate and describe cross-cultural upbringing. The purpose of the essay is to study how children are formed by growing up with two cultures, ie where the child's/children's parents come from two different cultures and one culture is not represented during the child's/children's upbringing. The issues from this are; What does the parent convey to the child/children of this culture? What hopes does the parent have regarding the meaning and consequences of the cross-cultural upbringing? The literature study shows that in a cross-cultural upbringing one must first see what the culture carries with it, which cultural traditions and attitudes that exist in the respective cultures. Do they, for example, have a foundation in group or individual orientation where different views are advocated and rewarded, and where these take different forms in parents’ views and during the children’s upbringing? Concepts that involve cross-cultural upbringing are identity, socialization, ethnicity and nationalism. Several studies also show the importance of language for socialization and cultural identity. Who you are and who you become are affected by language and also reflected in the language. The results of the study's interview survey and auto-ethnography point to, among other things, the importance of contacts with family and relatives through audiovisual aids via the internet, to keep a positive image of the other parent, and to visualize the culture through photographs and objects.

Doing graduate school in a second language : resituating the self through language socialization in computer-mediated classroom discussions

Ha, Myung Jeong 27 April 2015 (has links)
This dissertation adds to the growing body of research on L2 academic discourse socialization in classroom contexts. Although the importance of students' writing in socializing them into their target discourse communities has been well documented, much less has been made of how students learn through online activities when the division between more and less knowledgeable individuals are blurred. Addressing this gap, this qualitative extended case study explored the experiences and perspectives of novice L2 graduate students in academic literacy practices that involved online writing activities. The focal participants included five first-year female graduate students from different cultural backgrounds enrolled in a graduate class during fall 2008 semester. Data sources included interviews with focal students and with the professor, class observations, field notes, questionnaires, handouts, and students' reflective essays. Anchored in language socialization theories (Duff, 1996, 2003; Schieffelin & Ochs, 1986) and the notion of community of practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991; Wenger, 1998), this study provides an ecological perspective on these five L2 students' socialization into academic literacy activities. The findings revealed how the students negotiated competence, relations, and identities to participate legitimately as competent members of their classroom communities. This study also contributes to an understanding of the changing role of novice learners in a given academic community by analyzing how they variably exercise their agency and develop their subject positioning in academic literacy activities that are imbricated in social, cultural, and discoursal contexts. Ultimately, this study enriches the notions of academic discourse socialization by demonstrating the dialogic and transformative nature of academic literacy practices mediated by online discourses in order to highlight ever more contextual information. / text

Sociologie des féministes des années 1970 : analyse localisée, incidences biographiques et transmission familiale d’un engagement pour la cause des femmes en France / Sociology of 1970’s feminist activists : local approach, biographical consequences and family transmission of a commitment for women’s cause in France

Masclet, Camille 20 June 2017 (has links)
The feminist movements that arose in the 1970’s, promoting a radical contestation of patriarchy and committed to “women’s liberation”, helped challenge gender relations in many areas. Built upon an empirical research that combines archival work, questionnaires and interviews, my dissertation focuses on the women who took part in these mobilizations in France. It aims to understand how the involvement in this movement, characterised by the politicization of the private sphere, transformed “common” activists’ trajectories and those of their children. Using a local and comparative approach, this work first analyses the contexts in which the feminists evolved and were socialised. By tracing the feminist mobilizations that unfolded in Lyons and Grenoble between 1970 and 1984, it also revisits the history of the “second wave” French women’s movements. The study of the feminists’ activist careers then highlights the lasting socialising effects of their commitments and the impact they had on different areas of their life. Likewise, the use of sequence analysis reveals the trajectories they followed until present day, both from a political and personal prospect. Finally, a deeper focus on the activists who became mothers uncovers how intergenerational transmission of feminism occurred and which political contents the children inherited. In particular, this dissertation proposes several factors that help understand the differentiated appropriations of this heritage among the second generation.

Same although different: Social beliefs in the cultural canalization of twins’ development / Iguales, pero diferentes: creencias sociales en la canalización cultural del desarrollo de gemelos

Oliveira Machado, Alessandra, Uchoa Branco, Angela 25 September 2017 (has links)
This paper investigates ideas and expectations by the mother, grandfather and teacher of monozygotic twins  about  their  development,  considering  the sociocultural constructivist perspective. Through an interpretive-qualitative analysis, categories were constructed inferred from participant’s narratives. Results show that: a) cultural and educational prac- tices carried out within school and family contexts depend on adults’ beliefs about twinship;b) such practices may have fundamental impact over the development of subjectivity of each child; c) there are divergences about beliefs and expectations held by family and school contexts about twins’ behaviors and performances; d) there is a dialogical tension between promoting similarity and/or individuation/differentiation processes.

Leaving street life : How can centres assist street children in leaving the street life?

Karlsson, Linnea January 2015 (has links)
This is qualitative study about Kenyan street children. The aim of this study is to get a better understanding of the pull and push factors towards the street and towards rehabilitation centres. The question formulation is; How can rehabilitation centres assist street children in leaving the street life? 25 former street children have been interviewed in a combination of focus group and individual interviews. The theoretical framework that is used for the analysis is elucidation the perspective of childhood, the street child and the street, theories about socialisation and stigma. The result shows: Pull factors exist in both directions. The pull factors towards the street are freedom, friends in the streets and drug addictions. The pull factors towards the centre are access to education, a chance to be treated like full human beings and to be able to get a better future. The street children are active social agents who have to have a desire to leave the street, it is not possible to force them off the streets. What is offered in the centre has to be viewed as better than what they have in the streets. One way for the centres to help the street children to get the desire to leave the streets is by helping them to focus on their future. The centre can also help the street child to make the transformation to the centre easier. The most important aspects is to offer drug rehabilitation programs and make the re-socialization process easier by acknowledge the positive things the street children have learned in the street and to treat them as active social agents.

Guidelines for professional socialisation of student nurses

De Swardt, Hester Cathrina 11 1900 (has links)
An increase in reports of undesirable professional behaviour in the nursing profession has prompted the question: How could the internalisation of skills, knowledge, values and beliefs be guided in student nurses to help them become effectively socialised as professional nurses? Using a sequential exploratory mixed-methods approach, the study addressed the above question. The researcher used focus-group interviews and field notes to explore and describe the perceptions of professional nurses and experiences of student nurses regarding the professional socialisation of students. The data generated from these findings were further used to determine and describe educators’ (N=128) perceptions on their teaching and facilitation of professional socialisation of students, using a self-administered questionnaire. The findings of both the qualitative and quantitative data were integrated to develop and validate guidelines to support educators and professional nurses in the professional socialisation of students. To establish rigour, the researcher applied measures of trustworthiness and performed validity and reliability tests. The qualitative data were analysed by utilising Tesch’s method of data analysis. The themes that emerged as influential in the professional socialisation of students were related to the professional nurse as role model, clinical supervisor, the educator, clinical learning environment, values and beliefs of the nursing profession and cultural and gender orientations. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Educators’ teaching and facilitation strategies revealed that the educator as a role model, the clinical environment, teaching approaches and cultural awareness were important social determinants in the professional socialisation of students. The qualitative and quantitative data were integrated to develop guidelines that were validated by field and guideline experts. The guidelines for educators and professional nurses addressed issues such as the professional nurse as role model and clinical supervisor, the creation of a positive clinical learning environment, the educator as role model, the teaching and support of students, the work ethic of the professional nurse and educator, the students’ behaviour and cultural awareness. These guidelines propose recommendations for educators and professional nurses to support the professional socialisation of students. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Health Studies)
