Memory, landscape and heritage at Ngquza Hill : an anthropological studyMuller, Liana 03 1900 (has links)
The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between landscape,
memory and heritage. It aims to establish that landscape is not only an inseparable
part of the intangible process of memory, but also the formation and perpetuation of
cultural and individual identity. The composition of heritage, including the
sociocultural and biophysical, is therefore a complex result of varying interactions
between memory and landscape, as perceived by the living custodians. The
intangible values of meaning, memory, lived experience and attachment, in relation
to people's connection to locality and landscape, are traced back to the tangible
fabric of place. Through means of qualitative and quantitative anthropological
fieldwork methods and an extensive literature review, the sociocultural profile of the
Mpondo is briefly documented. The subsequent case study explored a site in the
Eastern Cape on Ngquza Hill, where the oral traditions and memories connected to
the site are mapped. These elements were accessed through employing the theories
of mnemotechnics. / Anthropology and Archaeology / M.A. (Anthropology)

Critical thinking of adolescents with regard to political issuesPienaar, Gregory Edward 11 1900 (has links)
Summaries in English and Afrikaans / The second fully democratic election in South Africa is scheduled to take place in May 1999.
In the five years since the first election, it appears that very little attention has been paid to the
political literacy of the electorate in general, and the youth in particular. The purpose of this
study was to establish adolescents' level of political knowledge and whether they are able to
think critically about political issues or not.
The first part of the literature study which was concerned with critical thinking revealed that
the major aspects of critical thinking are: deductive reasoning, inductive inference, recognition
of assumptions, credibility, and problem solving. The second part of the literature study was
an analysis of which factors may play a role in the development of critical thinking of an
adolescent. with particular reference to a political context. The third part was an examination
of important current political and social issues. These were: the new Constitution. Truth and
Reconciliation Commission, housing, land redistribution, education, labour, health, crime,
political violence, environment, and the next election.
A reliable measuring instrument was developed in order to measure adolescents' knowledge
of political issues, and their ability to think critically about these issues. The results of the
empirical study revealed that intellectual potential and academic achievement were
significantly related to critical thinking ability, while gender, environment, and personality
appeared not to play a role. There was a significant correlation between political knowledge
and critical thinking in a political context, implying that critical thinking is subject-specific.
Cultural background also played a significant role in critical thinking in a political context.
In terms of political knowledge, boys were found to be at a significantly higher level than girls.
The subjects from urban areas were also at a significantly higher level than those from rural
areas. There was also a positive correlation between intellectual potential, academic
achievement, and political knowledge.
Finally, some recommendations for improving the levels of political knowledge and critical
thinking abilities with regard to political issues of South African adolescents were given.
Kulturele agtergrond
dogters.
Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

Manifestations of corruption in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan MunicipalityLekubu, Bernard Khotso 02 1900 (has links)
This study was conducted as a result of the various media reports, various law enforcement investigation reports, Public Service Commission, reports of the Auditor General South Africa and the Public Protector South Africa on corruption and the various forms in which corruption manifests itself in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and the effectiveness of the various law enforcement agencies and the government in tackling the scourge of corruption in public and private institutions. While South Africa has various anti-corruption strategies, they all seem to be ineffective and have thus far not achieved their desired results. A qualitative research approach was used to investigate this problem. A thorough literature study and documentary analysis was used to gather all the relevant data related to this topic.
It has been found that the most common manifestations of corruption that take place in the South African public service are fraud, bribery, extortion, nepotism, conflict of interest, cronyism, favouritism, theft, graft, embezzlement and abuse of power. Other forms of corruption that raise concern are, for example, influence-peddling, insider trading/abuse of privileged information, bid-rigging and kickbacks. South Africa has, on the other hand, seven anti-corruption institutions and seventeen pieces of legislation which are intended to combat corruption in the public and private sector. These pieces of legislation give South African law enforcement and investigators in the public and private sectors a clear mandate with a view to investigating the high levels of corruption.
It is the submission of the Public Service Commission (2011:vi) that corruption has become a global concern that seriously hampers development in any country and diverts its resources from where they are needed the most. The most unfortunate truth and reality about corruption is that the poor suffer the most. / Criminology and Security Science / M. Tech. (Forensic Investigation)

In its haste to be integrated into the global economy, following many years of political-economic isolation – and thus assume full membership in the international community – the post-apartheid state adopted the economic framework of the free market system, based on the principles of neoliberal capitalism as its normative foundation for addressing the “legacy of apartheid”. The adoption of the economic model of neoliberal capitalism has, however, proved to be problematic insofar as it has failed significantly to address and thus overcome post-apartheid South Africa‟s most fundamental moral-political-economic challenge, namely poverty.
This thesis offers an alternative economic model, namely extended corporatism.
While the neoliberal economic model emphasises individual interest (based on the philosophical principle of autonomy in the economic sphere), the corporatist model, in contrast, emphasises collective interest (based on the philosophical principle of collective ownership and responsibility).
The advocacy of extended corporativism is based on the following key claims:
1. The free market system must be retained, but some form of strategic intervention is necessary so that certain socio-political and economic results can be achieved.
2. The current form of corporatism in South Africa is in fact tripartism (a weak form of corporatism). An extended corporatist political economy can by brought about by the implementation of corporations, the establishment of an economic legislative body, labour courts and centralised wage bargaining.
3. Extended corporatism can address South Africa‟s socio-economic problems. Transformation can be promoted by a paradigm shift away from liberal capitalism, a power shift away from the white capitalist enclave and a distribution shift in favour of the black impoverished lower classes.
4. All economic sectors as well as private industries and businesses must be brought under the control of corporations. The state and labour must become partners in private industries and businesses. In the same way capital must become a partner in state enterprises.
In conclusion, the adoption of extended corporatism in South Africa will ensure that state, capital and labour work together and that economic justice and harmony will prevail. / Ekuxhamezeleni kombuso owasungulwa emva kokuphela kobandlululo kuleli, ngenjongo yokuthi udidiyelwe emnothweni womhlaba, kulandela iminyaka eminingi ukhishwe inyumbazana kwezepolitiki nakwezomnotho – futhi ukuze uthathe indawo yawo njengelungu eligcwele lomphakathi wamazwe ngamazwe – waqoka ukwamukela nokusebenzisa uhlaka lwezomnotho lohlelo-kuhwebelana olukhululekile, olwakhelwe phezu kwemigomo yenqubo-mnotho ekhululekile yogombelakwesakhe, njengesisekelo-nkambiso sayo sokubhekana “nokhondolo lobandlululo”. Prophetic theology in the Kairos tradition : a pentecostal and reformed perspective in black liberation theology in South AfricaMorris, Allen William 31 October 2019 (has links)
This study focused on the ‘silence of the prophets’ in the post-apartheid era. It
sought to understand why the prophets, who spoke out so vehemently against
the injustices of apartheid, did not speak out against the injustices of the
government after 1994 even when it became blatantly apparent that corruption
was beginning to unfold on various levels, especially with the introduction of the
so-called Arms Deal. Accordingly, the study singles out Drs Allan Boesak and
Frank Chikane who were among the fiercest opponents of the apartheid regime
before 1994.
The study traced the impact of the ideological forces that influenced Boesak and
Chikane’s ideological thinking from the early Slave Religion, Black Theology in
the USA and Liberation Theology in Latin America. Black Theology and Black
Consciousness first made their appearance in South Africa in the 1970s, with
Boesak and Chikane, among others, as early advocates of these movements.
In 1983, Boesak and Chikane took part in the launch of the United Democratic
Front (UDF) in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. This movement became the voice of
the voiceless in an era when the members of the African National Congress
(ANC) and Pan African Congress (PAC) had been sent into exile. It also signalled
a more inclusive and reconciliatory shift in Boesak and Chikane’s Ideological
thinking. Whereas Black Consciousness sought to exclude white people from
participating in the struggle for liberation, the UDF united all under one banner
without consideration for colour, race, religion or creed. After the advent of liberation in South Africa in 1994, it became increasingly
obvious that corruption was infiltrating many levels of the new government. But
the prophets were silent. Why were they silent?
The study presents an analysis of the possible reasons for this silence based on
interviews with Boesak and Chikane as role players and draws conclusions
based on their writings both before and after 1994. Overall, the study concluded
that they were silent because they had become part of the new political structures
that had taken over power.
To sum up, the study demonstrates the irony of prophetic oscillation and
concludes that no prophet is a prophet for all times. Thus, as a new democracy
unfolds in South Africa, the situation demands new prophets with a new
message. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. Phil. (Theology)

Wattle we do? alien eradication and the 'ecology of fear' on the fringes of a world heritage site, South AfricaMerron, James Lawrence January 2010 (has links)
In their article ―Naturing the Nation: Aliens, the Apocalypse and the Post Colonial State (2001) Jean and John Comaroff look at ―the contemporary predicament of South Africa through the prism of environmental catastrophe. Through it they reveal the context in which alien plants have become an urgent affair of the state. Following their lead, I show how alien plants (particularly Australian wattle) continue to provide grounds for new social and political aspirations in South Africa, though in a different setting. With reference to a group of private landowners on the fringe of a World Heritage Site -- the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, Eastern Cape, South Africa -- I show how an increasingly apocalyptic and xenophobic environmental agenda has influenced local activists seeking to address social and ecological issues in tandem with alien-eradication. These local activists adhere to a particular brand of environmentalism which Milton (1993) argues can be considered a social, cultural and religious phenomenon. The subjects of my main empirical investigation offer practical ways of achieving a transformational end through a new ritual activity in relation to a spread and exchange of environmental ideas and practices on a world-wide scale. On the ground this group practices ecosocietal restoration through which they aspire to mend the bond between people and the land in a spiritual and moral sense, bolstering intrinsic incentives for environmental stewardship and achieving ―cultural reconciliation in an attempt to reimagine what South Africa could be.
