Concepts of democracy and human rights in abortion debate : Theme analysis of the abortion discourse in Poland

Houjeiri, Zuzanna January 2023 (has links)
Democracy and human rights are concepts whose definition depends on contextual cues. The paper analyzes what themes related to those concepts can be found in the context of abortion discourse in Poland in the years 2020-2023 and how they define or redefine these ideas, especially in the context of democratic regression. The study uses theme analysis to find common patterns and establish a clear structure. Findings present two main themes: values present in the discourse with three subthemes: morality and rights, church influence and national identity, question of doctors; and present institutions and their role: validity of Tribunals verdict and question of who should decide on this law. Themes prove some significant shifts in the discourse compared to previous studies and further show a divide in the definitions of democracy and human rights in Poland.

Analysis and Implications of Guest Attitudes Towards Queuing in Theme Parks

Lemaster, Austin 01 May 2015 (has links)
Queue lines are a fundamental inevitably of the modern theme park. Parks have begun to introduce various systems for combating the normal queue, some of which are at no extra cost to guests and some of which are an extra cost. These systems feature a variety of methods by which guests can bypass the normal queue and enter one featuring a minimal wait. Parks have also started to introduce elements within queues that make waiting in them easier and change guests’ perception of time, thus making the waits seem shorter. This thesis attempts to determine the attitudes of guests towards these new trends as well as traditional queuing. Experiences and perceptions of queues from theme park guests were collected and have been compared with existing literature on guest satisfaction, theme parks and queue lines in order to determine relationships between current practices and theory. The findings from these relationships resulted in several suggestions for theme parks to take into account as queues continue to evolve in order to best suit guest needs.

Setting up Camp: Identifying Camp through Theme and Structure

Schuyler, Michael T. January 2011 (has links)
Camp scholarship remains vague. While academics don't shy away from writing about this form, most exemplify it more than define it. Some even refuse to define it altogether, arguing that any such attempt causes more problems than it solves. So, I ask the question, can we define camp via its structure, theme and character types? After all, we can do so for most other genres, such as the slasher film, the situation comedy or even the country song; therefore, if camp relies upon identifiable character types and proliferates the same theme repeatedly, then, it exists as a narrative system. In exploring this, I find that, as a narrative system, though, camp doesn't add to the dominant discursive system. Rather, it exists in opposition to it, for camp disseminates the theme that those outside of heteronormativity and acceptability triumph not in spite of but because of what makes them different, othered or marginalized. Camp takes many forms. So, to demonstrate its reliance upon a certain structure, stock character types and a specific theme, I look at the overlaps between seemingly disparate examples of this phenomenon. These include a documentary film (Grey Gardens), a one-woman show (Elaine Stritch: At Liberty), a pop concert (Cher: The Farewell Tour), a diva (Vanessa Williams), a horror film (Carrie), a biopic (Ed Wood), an episodic television procedural (Charlie Angels), and a serialized television dramedy (Desperate Housewives). Then, I take what I find in those chapters and apply it to a non-canonical camp text when I look at theatrical and novelistic depictions of a sport: baseball. This reading suggests that baseball can actually serve as a form of camp. Throughout, by employing structural analysis, queer theory and postmodernism, I uncover camp mythological potential. In addition to demonstrating something which no critic has done previously, namely, that we can, indeed, identify camp via structure, character and particularly theme, this investigation results in several other discoveries. For instance, it reveals that most academics incorrectly label or dismiss camp as a gay only discipline. As becomes evident here, its theme has built into it widespread appeal, as opposed to appeal solely the domain of gay males. Also, it demonstrates camp continued relevance and vitality. Some scholarship in the last two decades or so has proclaimed camp dead, dying or insignificant. By showing our continued need for this form, by using up to the minute examples and by illustrating that critics often wholly misunderstand and misidentify this phenomenon, this dissertation challenges those assertions head on. History demonstrates a longstanding tradition of and a continued need for people to camp. Yet, the scholarship surrounding this form limits, dismisses or misidentifies it, its audience, its relevance, its appeal, its history, its power, and so forth. By asking if we can identify a timeless and necessary theme, one illustrated via character and structure, and in finding that we can, I hope to lay these problems and misconceptions to rest once and for all. In the end, camp exists. And, it exists as a <italics>narrative system as a genre, if you will. Sometimes, genres exist cyclically, lying dormant for a period, only to reemerge, refreshed and once again popular, at a later time. (We've seen this in cinematic westerns or Broadway musicals, for example.) So, genres seemingly never die. This addition to scholarship on camp, then, demonstrates that the myth producing system investigated here has an identity, a purpose, a history, a relevance, a widespread audience, a great deal of both power and potential, and a likelihood that it will always exist. And, since, as I find, camp again and again offers the theme that others regularly find success due to their alterity (as opposed to in spite of it), these findings make sense, for the form serves its own function. / Mass Media and Communication

Estruturação temática na tradução de textos literários da língua japonesa para a língua portuguesa: um enfoque sistêmico-funcional

Ninomiya, Sonia Regina Longhi 15 May 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Sonia Regina Longhi Ninomiya.pdf: 1788120 bytes, checksum: ed45b77f6ce258fc52d33e68908a6025 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-15 / Thematic structure gives a clause its character of message (HALLIDAY 1994). This structure is composed of Theme, the starting point of the message that lends prominence to the elements that compose it, thus establishing the base to interpret the remainder of the clause, named Rheme. This question has been the object of attention on the part of some researchers, and their papers show that linguistic choices made to realize Theme generate communicational implications (e.g. MATTHIESSEN 2001; LIROLA; SMITH 2006). Others have analyzed thematic structure in literary translation and suggested, thus displaying didactic concerns, that Theme changes in translation interfere in the interpretation of the message and often ascribe such changes to the translator‟s style (e.g. BAKER 1992; PAGANO 2005; FIGUEREDO 2006). In 1995, Ventola already had referred to the sparse amount of research studies focused on theme structure and on the pattern of Theme progression within a text that undergoes a translation process. In Brazil, researchers have analyzed this matter by comparing the Portuguese language to English or Spanish and, as far as we know, there is no researches contrasting Portuguese with the Japanese language, which is the case here. As it seeks to contribute to studies involving these questions, this thesis examines three short stories taken from modern Japanese literature and their translations into Portuguese with the aim of analyzing how thematic structure is realized, their different forms and how the latter interfere in the interpretation of the message within the translated text. This thesis is theoretical and methodologically supported by the premises of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY 1994), to the Japanese language by Teruya (2007), on the studies by Barbara and Gouveia (2004) to the Portuguese language and on contributions by Translation Studies. The analyses show that differences occur not always due to the linguistic typology, but owing to choices made by the translator, given that there were other possibilities of retextualization. As a result, a new perspective for interpreting the message and apprehending the literary characteristics of the work is outlined / A estrutura temática é a que imprime à oração o seu caráter de mensagem (HALLIDAY 1994).

A study on theme types in Taiwanese senior high school students' narratives

蔡慈娟, Tsai, Tsi Chuen Unknown Date (has links)
Theme plays a significant role in guiding the information flow in text. Nonetheless, there is evidence indicating that many EFL learners often fail to make good choices of theme to secure sentential relationship or writing coherence. Through the observation on the occurrences and distribution of theme types in three levels of student compositions: the high, the middle and the low-rated narratives, the present study aims to investigate the establishment of theme in Taiwanese senior high school students’ narratives in order to gain understanding of theme’s effect on writing coherence and writing quality. The entire study consists of a pilot study and a formal one. The pilot study helps establish the criteria for the main study. In the main study, 111 student compositions were gathered and two raters were recruited and trained for the rating. Based on the rating system, the student compositions are divided into 3 levels. 10 samples from each level were randomly selected for thematic analysis. The result shows that the occurrences and distribution of theme types in the three levels of writing are alike. In general, unmarked NP theme is the most favored by all the students and marked theme Non-fi C + NP is the least desirable. Nonetheless, in terms of the establishment of theme, there are major differences between groups. In particular, the high-rated essays tend to establish a theme that is connected to the theme or the rheme in the preceding discourse or provides background information for the development of the event. In contrast, the mid-or low-rated essays are more likely to establish a theme that is unrelated or disruptive to the progression of the current discourse. Based on the findings of the present study, it is suggested that the notion of theme including its features and functions be incorporated into the teaching of English compositions to help Taiwanese senior high school students identify the characteristics of coherent writing and facilitate coherence in their English narratives.

Finding the "Indian" in Amy Beach's Theme and Variations for Flute and String Quartet, op. 80.

Burgess, Stephanie J. 12 1900 (has links)
Music that is categorized as part of the Indianist movement in American music (ca. 1890-1925) typically evokes Native American culture, ritual, story, or song through compositional gestures. It may also incorporate Native American tunes. Amy Beach (1867-1944) is considered to have composed five Indianist works, but her Theme and Variations for Flute and String Quartet, op. 80 has not been included as one of them. This thesis rethinks categorization of the piece, seeking the "Indian" in it through examination of its gestures, instrumentation, and relationship to contemporary Indianist compositions.

Marc-André Hamelin's "Variations on a Theme of Paganini": The Effect of Polystylism through Pastiche and Musical Borrowing in Variations

Kim, Warren 12 1900 (has links)
Paganini's 24th caprice still remains to this day one of the most celebrated themes in classical music history. Many composers have used this theme to create variations and each composer attempted to produce stylistically unique variations on this piece. Hamelin's Variations on a Theme of Paganini stands out because his piece incorporates musical borrowing and many different composers' styles. His variations integrate music from different centuries, using pastiche and musical borrowing from figures such as Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. More provocatively, Hamelin's variations reach outside of Classical music, even adopting elements from salsa and friska. The spectrum of composers and styles included in this set are so radical and shocking that it creates a parody of not only Paganini's theme, but also the tradition of theme and variation pieces it has inspired. Due to its multiple variations juxtaposing extremely different styles, Hamelin's Variations on a Theme of Paganini presents the listener with a musical puzzle that is designed to invoke surprise. The juxtapositions of extremely different styles in these variations create disjointed variations with polystylism. The polystylism in this work diversifies his variations, while unifying these seemingly unbalanced movements through broad musical references. As such, both performers and listeners stand to benefit from a detailed, critical examination of the piece. I consider not just the musical sources themselves, but also the ways in which they interact, paying close attention to Hamelin's use of parody and humor.

Social movements in crisis: locating disaster communities in rhetoric and rhetoric in disaster communities

Archer, Max January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Communication Studies, Theatre, and Dance / Charles J. Griffin / Modern disasters have shown a disturbing tendency to disrupt normal community life by severing the connection between social services and the populace. Emergency managers realize that responding to disasters presents many unique communication challenges, both on the technical level and the symbolic level. Communities have begun to organize themselves to prepare for and respond to disasters in the event that emergency response agencies confront such challenges. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program was established to train and deploy citizens to supplement the efforts of first responders. The CERT program's website provides information about the program, how to form a CERT and other training and administrative information. A close textual reading of the CERT website enables the rhetorical critic to identify the use of fantasy themes that construct a vision that defines CERT as a rhetorical community. Upon identifying the rhetorical vision at work, a comparison can be made to the features that define a social movement. Applying social movement theory to citizen initiatives opens the possibility for improving community response and the study of communication issues in disaster response.

2 pp. / Once you have the basics of gardening down, it'?s fun to be creative! Many parts of your classroom curriculum can be incorporated in gardening. You can plant Butterfly Gardens, Bat Gardens, Pizza Gardens, Salsa Gardens, Dinosaur Gardens or build Sunflower Houses with your younger students. A simple idea like an ABC garden with a plant to match each letter can make learning the alphabet a bit more interesting when you break up the day by visiting your garden. It'?s an ideal situation for an older class to organize for the younger children in the school.
