The Tango Philadelphia Story: A Mixed-methods Study of Building Community, Enhancing Lives, and Exploring Spirituality through Argentine TangoSeyler, Elizabeth Marie January 2008 (has links)
Tango invites communication and creativity, it offers growth and community, and, in Philadelphia, it draws a unique cohort of dancers. What forces have driven growth of the Philadelphia tango community, who exactly are its members, and why do they dance tango? This qualitative and quantitative study recounts the community's history, reveals the people at its core, and explores what the dance means to them. It is a mixed-method, multi-layered integration of dance history, community profile, and individual narrative. Twenty-six instructors and event organizers provided data on the community's history. More than 100 dancers participated in a survey that gathered descriptive and demographic data, and nine dancers gave interviews on their lived experiences of tango. The community grew steadily from 1991 through 2006. Early local entrepreneurs modeled an ethos that placed a premium on tango's community-building capacity. This ethos remained a central force in the community's growth, drawing a unique cohort of dancers. Compared to Philadelphia census data, tango survey respondents were fifteen years older on average, more likely to be divorced or to have been born outside of the continental United States, better educated with higher incomes, and more likely to work in the arts. Ethnographic, quantitative, and mixed methods analysis reveals how tango may serve these unique cohorts and how many dancers perceive that tango enhances their physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social lives. Phenomenological inquiry explores dancers' concepts of spirituality and how some made spiritual meaning from tango experiences. Four central themes that emerged--tango music, tango dance, interactive experience, and internal experience--can be theorized to intertwine in a cycle wherein tango invites human interaction that leads to internal growth, which improves one's capacity to dance tango, thus creating a more satisfying interactive and internal experience. This research represents the first comprehensive study of tango in Philadelphia. It documents the creation of a popular social dance community in a major U.S. city and offers new data and theories on community building. It is also the first study to explore intersections between spirituality and tango and offers new insights into how tango improves adults' health and well being. / Dance

Building the TangoUtt, Melissa Gail 31 January 2009 (has links)
This is building the tango, a constructive investigation into the material consequences of dancing the tango.
Building the tango is about the resurrection of passion and life, as well as passion for life, of which the reality is now. It also involves resurrecting passion and life on a site occupied by ghosts and ruins: Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia.
The constructive investigation of dancing the tango on Belle Isle includes reclaiming the scandal, individual movements and individuals moving together, opposition of body to body, opposition of bodies to space, placement of feet, love of the dance, and feeling the heat of the tango.
Studying the material consequences of the tango requires that the structure, itself, is a tango. It is symbolic of a man's struggle for the possession of a woman. The structure is one part man, one part woman, every part dance. The constructive realities of the tango create a dance of materials, a dance of space and a dance of bodies within. / Master of Architecture

l’espace Sud. / This study conceptualizes the symbolism of the South as an identity space built
by a political ideology and a local aesthetics.
The Uruguay artist Joaquín Torres García’s inverted maps (1936, 1943) are a
political stand that asserts the enunciative power of Latin American artists who create
independently of the European cultural centers. His theory of “Constructive
Universalism" proposes a new art for Latin America, for the South, and originating in
the South, by combining pre-Colombian artistic ethics and modernist abstraction.
In the short story "The South" (1953) and the essay "The Argentine writer and
the tradition" (1951), the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges redefines South
American literature, marginalized and peripheral, as a literature that is entitled to all
aspects of the Western culture. By doing so, he rejects a culture that would only be
nationalist.
We analyze Argentine filmmaker Fernando Solanas’ cinematic diptych, which
includes the films South (1985) and Tangos, the Exile of Gardel (1988) in dialogue
with the manifesto "Towards a Thrid Cinema" (1969), co-written with Octavio Getino.
The South is seen as a space for the denunciation of the censorships imposed by the
dictatorship and imperialism, but also as a space for the renovation of culture and
identity. In the two movies, Solanas uses a regional cultural product, the tango, as tool
of political denunciation.
Throughout the study, we use Michel Foucault's notion of “heterotopia” and
Walter Mignolo’s concept of the “moveable center” to explore South’s multiple
meanings.

Sur.

How Augmented Reality Affects the Learning Experience at a Museum / Hur Förstärkt Verklighet Påverkar Inlärningsupplevelsen på ett MuseumLando, Emilio January 2017 (has links)
It is well documented that Augmented Reality (AR) enhances and supports learning. Earlier research compares AR applications with existing methods. Published research typically focuses on one AR in general. Nevertheless, there are different ways of using AR. This paper gives further insight into how to use AR as a learning tool as part of a museum experience. It focuses on AR through smartphones, where the world is measured through the phone’s sensors and the virtual content is displayed on the device’s screen. This thesis presents the results of a comparative study between two types of AR: In-world space and On-screen space. In-world space AR renders the virtual content registered onto the physical exhibition. On-screen space AR renders the virtual content on the screen of the phone and uses the physical space of the exhibition as an index retrieval point. The discussion emerging from this study aims to aid the development and design of AR applications at museum settings, by giving curators better understanding of design options in AR spaces. Qualitative results suggest that In-world space benefits learning.

Jourdain, Nicolas 03 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Previous issue date: 2012-12-04 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The objective of this research is the analysis of the expansion of tango
balls in São Paulo during the 1950s and 1960s, followed by a relative decline and
then a vigorous return in 1990s. The analysis relates this phenomenon to the
translation processes related to media, the media environments and cultural
semiosphere. The research uses these basis to reflect about the survivability of
tango in culture, since it has been broadcasted by brazilian radio stations in the
1950s and 1960s, migrated to dance balls in São Paulo, with performances by the
most successful orchestras of the time and, after a two-decade decline, re-emerged
in 1990s and persisted to boom through the 2000s. The main hypothesis sustains
that tango has been creating strategies to remain in the city culture, relying in the
ambience provided by the dancing balls. The overall goal of the research is to
analyze the link between tango and media, emphasizing the media dissemination
strategies that took place in tango dancing balls in São Paulo and demonstrating that
these strategies are articulated to propagate tango music and dance. In order to
show how the language of tango is being housed in the city´s dancing balls over
time, this research employs concepts from the theory of communication such as the
theory of cultural mestizaje developed by Amalio Pinheiro (2004, 2006, 2007), the
theory of bodymedia by Helena Katz and Christine Greiner (2001, 2002, 2005), the
semiotics of culture (LOTMAN, 1996) as well as other approaches regarding
communication, culture and mediation (MARTIN-BARBERO, 2002, 2008) / RESUMO.
A análise associa tal fenômeno a
O objetivo geral é analisar a
vinculação entre o tango e as mídias. O objetivo específico é analisar as estratégias
cultura e mediação (MARTÍN-BARBERO, 2002, 2008), a pesquisa pretende

Siqueira, Leonardo Pádua 20 April 2017 (has links)
Nesta perspectiva o
do bailado do tango. / In which way is the relation between the historical context, the imagination of the
Argentine tango and the Dinzel teaching method able to contribute for the education and
learning of the tango? This was the question that guided this dissertation project. This
text presents historical socioculturally contextualized data; it summarizes the teacher
and Tanguero Rodolfo Dinzel’s dance method and its practical applications.
Interspersed with these contents, the author reveals his findings as a Tanguero and tango
teacher throughout this study; and along with his findings, he makes contextual
contributions considering his personal tango practice. The goal of this dissertation,
which is focused on the area of artistic practices and processes of the Postgraduate
Program in Arts of UFU, is to offer a functional text for the education and learning
process of the tango, in an environment that can go beyond the university walls.
Proposed as a tool to continuously reinvent the way of teaching tango, this dissertation
aims to facilitate the creation of a meaningful experience of the learning process. In this
perspective, students are invited to discover their own way of dancing. As a conclusion,
one can say that the Dinzel method is able to contribute exponentially to the quality and
awareness in the tango dance. / Dissertação (Mestrado)

Interactive Tango Milonga: An Interactive Dance System for Argentine Tango Social DanceJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: When dancers are granted agency over music, as in interactive dance systems, the actors are most often concerned with the problem of creating a staged performance for an audience. However, as is reflected by the above quote, the practice of Argentine tango social dance is most concerned with participants internal experience and their relationship to the broader tango community. In this dissertation I explore creative approaches to enrich the sense of connection, that is, the experience of oneness with a partner and complete immersion in music and dance for Argentine tango dancers by providing agency over musical activities through the use of interactive technology. Specifically, I create an interactive dance system that allows tango dancers to affect and create music via their movements in the context of social dance. The motivations for this work are multifold: 1) to intensify embodied experience of the interplay between dance and music, individual and partner, couple and community, 2) to create shared experience of the conventions of tango dance, and 3) to innovate Argentine tango social dance practice for the purposes of education and increasing musicality in dancers. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2017
