Estimation of Stress Concentration and Stress Intensity Factors by a Semi-Analytical MethodKoushik, S January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The presence of notches or cracks causes stresses to amplify in nearby regions. This phenomenon is studied by estimating the Stress Concentration Factor (SCF) for notches, and the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) for cracks. In the present work, a semi-analytical method under the framework of linear elasticity is developed to give an estimate of these factors, particularly for cracks and notches in finite domains. The solution technique consists of analytically deriving a characteristic equation based on the general solution and homogeneous boundary conditions, and then using the series form of the reduced solution involving the (possibly complex-valued) roots of this characteristic equation to satisfy the remaining non-homogeneous boundary conditions. This last step has to be carried out numerically using, say, a weighted residual method. In contrast to infinite domain problems where a fully analytical solution is often possible, the presence of more boundaries, and a variety in configurations, makes the solution of finite do-main problems much more challenging compared to infinite domain ones, and these challenges are addressed in this work. The method is demonstrated on several classical and new problems including the problems of a semi-circular edge notch in a semi-infinite and finite plate, an elliptical hole in a plate, an edge-crack in a finite plate etc.

Subnormality and Moment SequencesHota, Tapan Kumar January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this report we survey some recent developments of relationship between Hausdorff moment sequences and subnormality of an unilateral weighted shift operator. Although discrete convolution of two Haudorff moment sequences may not be a Hausdorff moment sequence, but Hausdorff convolution of two moment sequences is always a moment sequence. Observing from the Berg and Dur´an result that the multiplication operator on
Is subnormal, we discuss further work on the subnormality of the multiplication operator on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, whose kernel is a point-wise product of two diagonal positive kernels. The relationship between infinitely divisible matrices and moment sequence is discussed and some open problems are listed.

The Construction of Irrational Numbers Meaning on Basic School: And approach proposal involving Real Numbers Axes constituentsWagner Marcelo Pommer 09 August 2012 (has links)
Considering Brazilian mathematics school textbooks as a primary research source, the knowledge to be taught still has a dual presentation, polarized in a pragmatic or theoretical way, what follows a thematic procedure pattern that favors an operational development involving exact, finite and deterministic contexts. In particular, these characteristics are seriously accentuated by the time of irrational numbers introduction at basic education, which leads to a restrictive approach. To overcome this situation, Bruner (1987) states that we should not postpone teaching key issues based on the belief that they are too hard, because the fundamental ideas of any subject can be taught at basic education, but it demands a work that overcome technical aspects, considerations that are equivalent to the resumption with aspects related to understanding. In this work, we had by hypothesis that the tension inherent on discrete/continuous, exact/approximate, finite/infinite pairs, extracted from analyses on real numbers epistemological evolution and described at Machado (2009), constitutes an essential conceptual pillar to establish a helpful framework to enable a significant irrational numbers approach, in order to compose an amalgam between technical and semantic aspects. Considering the necessary educational discussion involving this theme, we initially delimited an investigative context based on a qualitative study guided by the question How irrational numbers are approached in basic education, considering mathematics textbook as a source?\' in order to map this subject presentation at Middle and High School. The methodological foundation was inspired in meaning core, described in Aguiar and Ozella (2006), which aims to capture the sense that constitutes the speech content expressed inside mathematics scholar textbooks. The analysis from meaning core route reveals that, in the textbooks examined, the most known irrational numbers introduction occurs in a polarized way: some opt for a pragmatic bias and others by formal definition. However, it was found that after an initial approach, there is no further relationship between these options, which causes a rapid depletion of the tools to develop these themes, which limits the complexity understanding of irrational numbers in basic education. From the hypotheses and the empirical research, we intended to delineate contributions presented on the dialectical movement between discrete/continuous, finite/infinite and exact/approximate pairs, whose mutual connections permeate a \'space of meanings\', a field that allows to organize, to weave and to expand a network of meanings, as Machado (1995), favoring a framework for better understanding the irrational numbers development in basic school. The epistemological approach performed revealed a multiplicity of relationships involving irrational numbers and various subjects of mathematics curriculum, not properly characterized and exploited in basic education, references which served as contexts for the presentation of some teaching situations to illustrate the contributions guidance suggested. We believe that the epistemological path trodden enables an opening to increase possibilities of meanings in relation to other topics of Elementary Mathematics, considering as support the capability constituents presented in discrete/continuous, exact/approximate, finite/infinity axis, as well as in deterministic/random pair.

Nessa dissertaÃÃo fazemos um estudo bibliogrÃfico apresentando vÃrios resultados existentes e fornecemos uma prova alternativa para a densidade 7/20 de cÃdigos Ãtimos em grades retangulares infinitas usando o mÃtodo da descarga / The identifying code problem was introduced in 1998 by Karpovsky as a way to help fault diagnosis in multiprocessor computer systems Since then the study of this problem and its variants has been developed Antoine Lobstein maintains a bibliography with more than 200 articles on this subject
The idea of the problem is to identify any vertex of the graph using just its identifying set which are the vertices of its closed neighborhood in the identifying code
Many recent papers have investigated infinite graphs and then the main objective is to obtain identifying codes in these infinite graphs with the smallest possible density In 2005 Ben-Haim and Litsyn proved that the density of an optimum identifying code in the infinite rectangular grid is 7/20
In this dissertation we present a bibliographical study showing several existing results and we provide an alternative proof to the density 7/20 for optimum identifying codes in infinite rectangular grids using the discharging method

This dissertation aims to find the relationship between the unity of God as conceived by Spinoza and the plurality of possibilities of human action. To reach this point, the problem called by a few commentators as the passage from infinite modes and atributes (of God) to finite modes is analyzed. This is because there is no clarity in the final parts of the first session of the Ethics, leaving several possible interpretations. The second part presents the key concepts for the work that has been done, among them information theory and mathematical analyzes on infinity, culminating in the presentation of the concept of entropy, which consists of the energy of possibility. The essay demonstrates, with an approach on action theory, how it is possible from one God, through the law of entropy, to exist a world of infinite finite modes (things). In conclusion, in the same way as the existence of finite modes, human actions are in a realm of the possible, not being totally determined, but all with possible and foreseeable causes, whether from God or from the human's affections.

Estas análises, de caráter inovador, revelam que o elemento escolhido é capaz de reproduzir acuradamente o comportamento de ondas não refletidas, se propagando ao infinito, ou seja a condição de radiação ou amortecimento geométrico / Abstract: The present thesis reports an overview and a numerical implementation of the Finite Element Method (FEM) in wich the so called ¿infinite elements¿ are included to model the Sommerfeld's radiation condition or the geometric damping in the stationary response of unbounded (visco-) elastic domains. Initially one dimensional infinite elements are formulated and implemented. The properties of the exponencial decay type and the mapping elements are investigated by means of the stationary response of semi-infinitecolumns of variable cross-section, conical and exponential. In the sequence the main issues of multidimensional (visco-) elastic wave propagation are presented, followed by a revision of the proposed infinite elements for two-and three dimensional analysis. For the two dimensional case a exponential decay type element is formulated and implemented. The
properties of the 2D element are discussed on hand of the dynamic analysis of rigid foundations, surface and embeded, interacting with homogeneous and layered half-spaces. This rather innovative analysis reveals that the considered element is able to model accurately the rdiation condition on homogeneous and stratified unbounded domains / Mestrado / Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Sobre a incomunicabilidade humana / Sobre a incomunicabilidade humanaClaudenir Modolo Alves 05 June 2009 (has links)
This dissertation deals with human incommunicability. We intend to further study the following problematizing issue: Ontologically speaking, is the human being capable of communicating? In other words: can communication exist? The immanent hermeneutics of philosophical texts, followed by analytical reflection, leads us to the problem of human incommunicability, throws light on key approaches to the state of radical and generalized incommunication, and, on the other hand, the possibility for human beings to establish relationships and open lines of communication for their survival. The planets communication system allows for minimal possibilities of human beings establishing relationships; we have, therefore, to conclude that we live in an era of human incommunicability, starting with the incommunicability between the self and others.

[en] ETERNITY IN THE WORKS OF JORGE LUIS BORGES / [pt] A ETERNIDADE NA OBRA DE JORGE LUIS BORGESPAULA MARCHESINI DE SOUZA MENDES 15 April 2008 (has links)
[pt] O presente trabalho analisa as figurações e o sentido do
conceito de
eternidade na obra de Jorge Luis Borges. No primeiro
capítulo, destaca os
principais símbolos borgianos atrelados ao conceito (a
palavra, o nada, o eu, os
animais, etc.); no segundo, as principais refutações do
literatura.
solução do enigma do
[en] The present document analyzes the figurations and the
meaning of the
concept of eternity in the work of Jorge Luis Borges. In
the first chapter, it points
out the main borgesian symbols linked to the concept (the
word, the nothing, the I,
the animals, etc.); in the second chapter, the main
refutations of time, found in the
author´s essays; in the third and last chapter, it examines
in what way the concept
of eternity is related to the writer´s process of literary
creation and to his very
concept of literature. Such analysis means to offer a new
approach towards the
argentine author´s work, emphasizing, behind his obsession
with labyrinths,
enigmas and with the problem of time, his search for the
center, or for the solution
of the enigma of time, seen, through literary art, in the
concept of eternity. Apart
from that, it wishes to analyze the ambiguous relation the
author maintained with
the concept of eternity, seeing it at times as a dream that
man should abandon to
be part of the real world and, at other times, as an
impossible goal that, only
through literature, could have any meaning to men.

Structural Analysis of Poloidal and Toroidal Plasmons and Fields of Multilayer NanoringsGarapati, Kumar Vijay 30 June 2017 (has links)
Multilayered metallo-dielectric nanoparticles are increasingly considered in various applications to control the spatial and temporal behavior of electromagnetic fields. In particular, the surface mode excitation by photons or electrons in metal nanorings finds significant applications because of the implied field distribution and electromagnetic energy confinement. However, most solid nanorings that are multilayered and/or embedded in a medium have non-simply connected geometry resulting in surface modes which are not linearly independent. That is, unlike particle plasmon eigenmodes in other geometries, the amplitudes of the eigenmodes of tori exhibit a distinct forward and backward coupling. We investigate the surface modes of such toroidal nano-structures and obtain the canonical plasmon dispersion relations and resonance modes for arbitrarily layered nanorings. When seeking the nonretarded surface modes for a stratified solid torus, we obtain a three-term difference equation which plays an important role in obtaining the needed dispersion relations. The obtained dispersion relations are investigated in depth in terms of the involved matrix continued fractions and their convergence properties including their determinant forms for computing the plasmon eigenmodes. The numerical solutions of the dispersion relations in case of a solid ring are presented for comparison and the resonance frequencies for the first few dominant modes of a ring composed of plasmon supporting materials such as gold, silver, and aluminum are provided and compared to those for a silicon ring. The mode complementarity and hybridization in multilayered toroidal structures is discussed and different ring configurations are simulated in the quasistatic limit by selecting number of layers modeled by their local dielectric functions. A generalized Green’s function with derivation intricacies addressed for multilayer tori is obtained from which one may calculate and study the scattering behavior of any of the modes that may exist in the many layer system. In particular, the electric potential distribution corresponding to individual poloidal and toroidal modes in response to an arbitrarily polarized external field and the field of electrons is obtained. The results are applied to obtain the local density of states and decay rate of a dipole near the center of the torus. Finally, two new types of toroidal particles in the form of janus nanorings are introduced.

Groupes modulaires et groupes d'automorphismes de complexes de surfaces de type infini / Mapping class groups and automorphisms of complexes of surfaces of infinite typeNguyen, Maxime 15 June 2012 (has links)
Let sigma g,n be an orientable surface of genus g with n punctures. The mapping class group of sigma g,n acts on several complexes, for instance the curve complex or the pants complex of the surface. It is proved that the automorphism group of each of these complexes are isomorphic to the mapping class group. This implies in particular that the group of outer automorphisms of a finite index subgroup is finite. The purpose of this thesis is to prove a similar result on some surfaces of infinite type and genus zero. For this, we define an asymptotic mapping class group of these surfaces, and then a locally infinite cellular complex where the mapping class group acts naturally. It brings up some properties of the automorphism group of each cellular complex by making automorphisms act on auxiliary graphs. The first studied asymptotic mapping class group is isomorphic to the Thompson group T. The second one is an extension of the universal mapping class group of genus zero.
