The terms "submission" and "freedom" are the starting point for a rereading of Romans 16: 1-16, in which we will seek the contributions of this text to these movements, through their feminist reading and the new understanding that arises from of this rereading. Through this process, we intend to touch on a crucial point for the discussion presented here: the visibility of women, their importance and equality in all levels of society, making a socio-historical rescue, especially of women in the context in which letter was written and its possible applications to our current context. In introductory tones, we briefly expose some elements of the Bible's story of interpretation. In the first chapter, we describe a general outline of the letter to the Christian community in Rome, which integrates the structure of it, the social stratum of the Christian community in Rome, how this community formed, and the description of the role of women in Roman society. Then we will present three translations of the text in question, making a conservative interpretation, followed by a new proposal for analysis. We will conclude the chapter on Pauline ecclesiology. In the second chapter, we will indicate important concepts to understand Pauline thought in Romans 16: 1-16 and its application to the present context, dealing with the following themes: patriarchalism, androcentrism, gender and feminist reading of the Bible. We will also outline a scenario of women's reality in Brazilian politics and religion. We will conclude this chapter with Paul's proposals from Romans 16: 1-16 for the libertarian movements of women's emancipation and the challenges for the ecclesiastical and even political context.

Language and gender : Male domination among the Kikuyu of Kenya, East Africa

Wanjeri, Michael Maina January 2006 (has links)
<p>Language and gender is one of the most intriguing and interesting areas in sociolinguistic study. It investigates how men and women (or boys and girls) use language differently in social contexts.</p><p>Extensive study and research has been carried out in this field, particularly in regard to the English language. Eminent linguists such as Ronald Wardhaugh, David Crystal, Ralph Fasold, and Deborah Tannen have studied varying male-female use of the English language. They have also attempted comparison with other languages and cultures. Wardhaugh, for instance, has studied male-female use of language in English, American-Indian languages (such as Gros Ventre), Asian and Oriental languages (Yukaghir, Japanese) among others, and his findings have become the subject of several of his published works.</p><p>In their investigations they have found that almost invariably, the way men use language shows them to be socially dominant over women. This persists even in such cases as in the Malagasy language spoken in Madagascar, where men display linguistic characteristics more popularly associated with women and vice versa (Wardhaugh).</p><p>This paper seeks to determine whether men use language to dominate women among the Kikuyu ethnic group of Kenya, East Africa, to which I belong. Areas such as terms used to refer to men and women, taboo language and language use in marital situations are examined, among others. I also attempt to find out what influence this has had on English spoken in Kenya.</p>

A Comparison of Agonistic Behavior and Reconciliation in Free-ranging and Captive Formosan Macaques (Macaca cyclopis)

Wei, Shih-hui 12 September 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the agonistic behaviors and reconciliation in captive and free-ranging Formosan macaques (Macaca cyclopis). The dominance style of Formosan macaques was compared with long-tailed, rhesus and Japanese macaques. I have used scan, focal sampling and ad libitum on aggressions of adult macaques. I have recorded post-conflict (PC) focal samplings on victims and compared those with matched control (MC) focal samplings. Agonistic behaviors had significantly higher frequency in captive than in free-ranging Formosan macaques. The frequencies of hostile and submission were significantly higher in captive than in free-ranging Formosan macaques. The captive adult females of higher rank had higher frequency of threat and hostile, and lower frequency of submission. Threat was the most frequent aggression (52-72%) expressed by both the captive and free-ranging adult monkeys. The victims in captive and free-ranging Formosan macaques usually submitted immediately after aggression (82-89%). The proportion of counter aggression in captive and free-ranging Formosan macaques were relative low (9-16%). The aqerage conciliatory tendency for adult Formosan macaques was 14.3% to 19.6%. The affiliative contacts in PC and MC in captive and free-ranging Formosan macaques were striking that both preferred grooming. The Formosan macaques significantly reconciled more during PC than MC period both in captive and free-ranging conditions. In addition, both had significantly more attracted than dispersed PC-MC pairs. The conciliatory tendencies in captive and free-ranging Formosan macaques were similar regardless of kin and non-kin partners. This study indicated that Formosan macaques were close to the macaques of Fascicularis group. Therefore, Formosan macaques had a despotic dominance style as suggested by Phylogenetic hypotheses.

This is to highlight the process of naturalization of invisibility, their source of insecurity and social exclusion, in view of the strong personal relationship of domination. Pointing out the relations of pseudo-affection that can obscure the exploitation of domestic labor. Highlight a preliminary discussion on the composition of social relations embedded in the context of domestic work, with emphasis on reflection on the condition of subordination of young domestic workers as a result of a process of socialization consists of relations of domination - gender and social class, resulting in formation of social identity-forming negative stigma. This paper results from a survey of the work of young maids, held in the city of Aracaju, whose main objective was to understand how they operated the differences and inequalities in the relations of domestic based, including information on adolescents' own. Fieldwork was conducted from August 2009 to January 2010 and data collection techniques were used oral history / life history, questionnaires and use of semi-structured interviews, as well as secondary data from PNAD / IBGE which formed the basis of comparative national situation and local context. It emphasizes the links of domestic work involving teenagers question the lifestyles of working class who are confronted by the various "systems" for each home, which leads to the development of adaptation strategies that make possible the coexistence of a stranger the house at the other. It focuses on how the work goes into their lives in terms of socialization offered by working families to their children's, and as this class habitus is adequate for the job market in domestic employment through a socialization process that sometimes opposes and now reinforces the practices and values seized in family socialization / Este trabalho demonstra aspectos relevantes sobre o labor dom?stico realizado por adolescentes entre 16 e 18 anos, nos espa?os residenciais.

Fonsêca, Joseana Souza da 25 March 2010 (has links)
This paper proposes a comparative analysis of the female characters in the novels Caetana s sweet song (1987), of Nélida Piñon, and Cartilha do Silêncio (1997), of Francisco Dantas, through a sociocultural approach. We support the hypothesis that despite the woman in these works, she passes through border areas where oppression and freedom confused each other, many times she is submitted to way of life the patriarchal society. Our aim is to identify what mechanisms of the power that encompass the subaltern character as for gender / sexuality and social class aspect. In the Caetana s sweet song we give priority to the study of prostitutes: Gioconda, Diana, Palmira and Sebastiana, without leaving aside the actress mambembe Caetana. In Cartilha do Silêncio, we emphasize the subordinate place of Arcanja, a poor niece of the rich patriach Romeu Barroso, to Avelina, wife of household Barroso family, Mané Piaba, and D. Senhora, the bourgeois that has her sexuality repressed by her husband. Theoretically, we follow the guidelines that power and oppression are part of the devices of social control according to Michel Foucault. The subaltern identities are studied through sociological proposal that say all identity is mobile and flexible according to Stuart Hall and Zygmunt Bauman. Within the Brazilian literary criticism about the representation of female characters, we follow the guidelines of the studies of Elódia Xavier and Regina Dalcastagnè. Teaching purposes, this dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first, we situate the place of Nélida Piñon‟s and Francisco Dantas‟s work and we point out the main characteristics of their female characters. In the second, we developed the concept of subaltern and oppression from the devices of gender, class and sexuality. In the third, we analyze how the discourse of the subaltern woman is constructed. In the last chapter, we add the space as an indicator of the condition of the subordinate characters, with emphasis on the study of heterotopias, spaces of crisis and construction of new identities. Thus, this research maps the main characteristics of the subaltern female characters in Nélida Piñon‟s and Francisco Dantas‟ fiction.

Patriarchal structures, a hindrance to women's rights

Baloyi, Magezi Elijah 27 May 2008 (has links)
The research is focusing on understanding the problems that are caused by the patriarchal set-up and which become stumbling blocks for the rights of women in the church and society. The research is done by application of the liberation theology from the reality of the experiences of the oppressed women. The research will: - Use the practical case studies as an experience of the victimized society in order to understand their pain and need. - Study the biblical passages that helps to understand more about how men and women are expected to relate to each other by God. - Study the African traditional understanding about how men and women should relate to each other. - Give guidelines on how men and women can be equal participants for the kingdom of God, without undermining the rights of women and the biblical message on the view of women. Liberation theology pioneered by James Cone will be used pastorally and therapeutically to help the women as victims of gender oppression both in the church and in the society. / Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Practical Theology / unrestricted
