Factors causing career indecision of school leavers in KwandebeleMabena, Esther Ntombana 06 1900 (has links)
This research was undertaken to determine factors causing career indecision of
schoolleavers in Kwandebele. Literature study indicates that factors such as
interest, sex, dependency, vocational immaturity, the economy and politics have
a direct influence on career indecision. Literature study further indicates that
parties involved in career decision-making also contribute to career indecision.
424 Kwandebele school leavers answered questionnaires. The schoolleavers
were requested to indicate the importance and contributions of five categories,
namely personal aspects, family, school, guidance teacher and society to his
career choice making process. Most of the personal aspects were regarded as
important and also the other four categories showed a significant difference
between school leavers who have made a choice and those that have not made a
choice.
This research could not cover the implication of career education at all levels of
the child, recommendations for future research have been made. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

The relationship between hardiness and career adaptability of students studying at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in GautengNdlovu, Velly 04 1900 (has links)
The research focused on the relationship between hardiness and career adaptability of students studying at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in Gauteng. A quantitative survey was conducted on a convenience sample of (N = 198) of African (92.9%), female (57.6%), single (96.0%), aged 21 years and younger (93.9%) students enrolled at Gauteng TVET colleges for N1 – N6 Engineering Studies (32.8%). A correlational analysis indicated differences between the variables of hardiness and career adaptability and the study reveals that overall hardiness was significantly related to overall career adaptability. A stepwise regression analysis indicated that gender and the hardiness attributes (commitment, control and challenge) predicted career adaptability. The test for significant mean differences indicated that age, gender and field of study differ significantly between the variables of hardiness and career adaptability. Limitations for the study are outlined. Furthermore, recommendations are suggested for use by human resource regarding career development practices for TVET college students. The study concludes with an evaluation of its contribution. / Human Resource Management / M. Com. (Human Resource Management)

A psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners : development and evaluationHong, Hee Jung January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to extend sport career transition knowledge by developing and evaluating a psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners. Study 1 provides an extensive overview of organisational intervention programmes for sport career transition, as well as of training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners from 19 countries worldwide. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the following five features of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes and training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners: 1) At the government level, which organisation is responsible for the delivery of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? 2) What is the typical strategy of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? 3) Which activities and events are included in sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? 4) Who is responsible for the delivery of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? and 5) Do sporting organisations have training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners? Findings from Study 1 were used to inform Study 2 and to supplement the literature review. According to the literature, training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners remain scarce, while the number of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes is gradually increasing. The purpose of Study 2 was to develop and evaluate a novel psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners. There were three stages of development and evaluation: (1) content development, (2) curriculum design and (3) curriculum evaluation. To achieve the goal of Study 2, a focus group and a two-round Delphi method were implemented. The final version of the psycho-educational curriculum is presented in Chapter 5. The purpose of Study 3 was to test a key aspect of the psycho-educational curriculum developed in Study 2 concerning 38 competences of sport career transition practitioners. A curriculum package consisting in the key parts from the overall curriculum was developed for Study 3. The findings revealed that the curriculum package positively affected the confidence of the study participants in 38 competences concerning sport career transition. This demonstrates that the curriculum is effective for the development of sport career transition practitioners, as the study participants exhibited greater confidence on all four factorsDual Career Transition Management, Skill Transfer, Social Support, and Career Planningwhen completing the curriculum package. The discussion in Chapter 7 focuses on both the theoretical and practical implications of the research, limitations and future research directions. In conclusion, the findings presented here deepen the knowledge of sport career transition in the areas of organisational intervention programmes for high performance athletes and training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners. In addition, a novel psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners is developed and evaluated.

Elitidrottares adaptabilitet vid utmanande karriärövergångar : Hållbara karriärövergångar ur ett konstruktivistiskt och salutogent karriärvägledningsperspektiv / Athletes ́ adaptability within non-normative career transitions : A Career Constructive Salutogen ApproachSoldervik, Jessica, Johansson, Isabelle January 2021 (has links)

Ga-Rankuwa secondary school students' awareness of career counselling and factors influencing career choicesLetlape, Tabea Mmasebedise 11 1900 (has links)
The fundamental aim of education is to empower learners to succeed in their career path and,
as such, the future of South African learners depends on the quality of decisions and the
progress made by them in respect of their personal and career development needs. The focus
of the study was on investigating the awareness of guidance and counselling in Ga-Rankuwa
secondary schools, and explore factors influencing career choice. The total number of
secondary schools that participated in the study were seven (7), and all public schools from
the disadvantaged context, in the Tshwane West Education District. The study was a descriptive
survey, and the target population consisted of 859 participants. The data were collected, using
two questionnaires; namely the Career Development Questionnaire (CDQ), and the Selfstructured Questionnaire (SSQ). The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used
to generate data, which were used as descriptive statistics of frequency table, percentages and
cross-tabulation to “raise awareness on the status of career guidance and counselling in GaRankuwa secondary schools”
The findings of the study showed that career guidance and counselling was not effectively
implemented in schools, and that inadequate career education was offered to learners during
Life Orientation classes. From the findings, it was discovered that learners did not have the
accurate, sufficient, informed and practical knowledge to help them make sound career
decisions, and that learners’ levels of career maturity were very low. It was evident from the
findings that age, gender, parents/guardians educational background did not have any
significant influence on learners’ career choices. The researcher, therefore, recommends that
Life-Orientation teachers be exposed to extensive career guidance and be offered training in
career counselling, and that there should be adequate and accessible career guidance and
counselling facilities for learners – and that career guidance strategies and policies should be
reviewed. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)

The effects of a cognitive information processing career intervention on the dysfunctional career thoughts, locus of control, and career decision self-efficacy of underprepared college studentsHenderson, Kristina M. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Special Education / Kenneth F. Hughey / This study investigated the impact of a seven-session career intervention in a First Year Experience course on the dysfunctional career thoughts, locus of control, and career decision self-efficacy of underprepared college students. The career intervention was based on the cognitive information processing approach to career decision making (Peterson, Sampson, & Reardon, 1991; Peterson, Sampson, Reardon, & Lenz, 1996; Reardon, Lenz, Sampson, & Peterson, 2000; Sampson, Reardon, Peterson, & Lenz, 2004) and utilized the CTI workbook (Sampson, Peterson, Lenz, Reardon, & Saunders, 1996b). Participants in the study were full-time freshmen enrolled in remedial academic courses at a small, open-enrollment institution.
The study was a Nonequivalent Control Group design with delayed posttest. Ten hypotheses were identified and tested. The Career Thoughts Inventory, the Rotter IE Scale, and the Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form were administered at pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest. ANCOVA was used to analyze differences between the mean scores by group for each of the dependent variables. In addition, dependent t-tests were used to examine the differences between the mean scores within group for each of the dependent variables.
Results of this study indicated that underprepared students who participated in the career intervention significantly improved dysfunctional career thoughts on all variables from pretest to posttest. Further, improvement in dysfunctional career
thoughts was maintained four weeks after the intervention. Significant differences were also found at posttest between the treatment and control groups for CTI Total and Decision-Making Confusion. In addition, a significant positive correlation was found between dysfunctional career thinking and locus of control, indicating the participants with higher levels of dysfunctional career thoughts also had a more external locus of control.
Locus of control was not significantly different from pretest to posttest in the treatment group; however, locus of control did become more internal following the intervention. At delayed posttest, locus of control of the treatment group was not significantly different from Rotter’s (1966) normative sample while the control group continued to be significantly more external than the normative sample. While career decision self-efficacy was not significantly different from pretest to posttest, students’ scores indicated confidence in their ability to perform career tasks.

Exploring the relationship between career anchors, job satisfaction and organisational committmentLumley, Elizabeth Jean 11 1900 (has links)
The primary objective of the study was to explore the relationship between career anchors, job satisfaction and organisational commitment using a sample of 86 employees at four Information Technology companies in South Africa. A secondary objective was to determine whether individuals from various gender, race, position and age groups differed significantly regarding their career anchors, job satisfaction and organisational commitment. The instruments used were the Career Orientations Inventory (COI), Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) and Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ).
The research findings indicated that career anchors are partially related to participants’ job satisfaction and organisational commitment and participants’ levels of job satisfaction and organisational commitment are significantly related. The findings also showed that demographic groups differ significantly regarding their career anchors, job satisfaction and organisational commitment. It is recommended that interventions aimed at improving individual career decision making and organisational retention practices take cognisance of how these variables relate to individuals’ career anchors, job satisfaction and organisational commitment. The study is concluded with recommendations for Industrial and Organisational Psychology practices and further research.

Kvinnors karriäravancemang i revisions- och finansbranschen : En studie om vilka faktorer som påverkar kvinnors karriärmöjligheter / Women’s career opportunities in the audit and financeindustry : A study about the factors that influence women’scareer opportunitiesEhn, Elin, Rudengren, Karin January 2016 (has links)
Background/problem: Historically, the audit and finance industry have been dominated by men but today the majority of the co-workers are women. Despite this progress, women in both industries are still underrepresented in top positions and are still facing problems in their career advancement. Purpose: The aim of the study is to describe and explain similarities and differences between women’s experienced career opportunities in the audit and finance industry. Method: 12 hypotheses have been derived from previous studies and theories. The hypotheses were tested using telephone surveys with 79 women from the audit industry and 81 women from the finance industry. Conclusion: Women in the accounting profession experience that they have better career opportunities than women in the finance industry. The main factors that influence women in the audit industry are age, family, health, previous working experience and promotion. Where as in the finance industry age, previous working experience and ambition are the primary factors that influence women’s career opportunities.
