Listening comprehension : Digital technology and its effect on the L2 learner’s listening comprehension.Larsson, Sofi, Lundberg, Ove January 2019 (has links)
The rapid development of new technologies and how these are affecting school age children is in this day and age an area of growing importance. In the context of second language (L2) acquisition, it has been noted that spare time activities of a digital nature impact those pupils who spend more time on activities such as online gaming in the target language than average (Sundqvist 2019, 95-103). The aim of the current study was to investigate the possible effect three different digital spare time activities (computer and video games, movies and music) have on listening comprehension. This when English is the dominant language in the activities, and the focus is on 6th grade children. The method used was a comparison made between a language diary homework, consisting of the participants’ estimated number of hours spent on digital spare time activities, and the results of a listening exercise. The results show that there is a positive correlation between the results of the listening comprehension test and the number of hours spent on digital spare time activities. Also, repeated exposure to the target language in a digital spare time context does, therefore, affect second language acquisition to a limited extent. The conclusion was that in order to come to a more conclusive answer regarding the correlation between digital spare time activities and English listening comprehension, more research is needed.

This research was developed within the scope of the Professional Master in Management and Evaluation of Education (PPGP) of the Center for Public Policies and Education Evaluation of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (CAEd / UFJF). It addresses the implementation of houractivity in the scope of Federal Law 11,738 / 08, which, in line with LDB (9394/96), reorganizes the teaching day. The objective was to contribute to the reflection about the implementation of policies for the training of teachers in public service for the training of teachers in service from the institutionalization of the hour-activity with Law 11.738 / 08, analyzing limits and possibilities and proposing a plan that would minimize the identified difficulties. The research proposed to answer what possibilities and limits limit the use of hour-activity as a formative space, having as field four state schools located in the Regional Coordination of Education of Ouro Preto do Oeste in the state of Rondônia. It was characterized as a case study with a qualitative approach, having as instruments the documentary analysis, focus groups and bibliographic research. The theoretical contribution came to support the training paradigm adopted when referring to continuing education in the school, focusing especially on three fronts, the first one focused on the implementation of public policies and their challenges (CONDÉ, 2013; LOTTA, 2010; MAINARDES, 2006); the second presenting reflections on continuing education beyond traditional conceptions, conceiving the school as a formative locus, guiding the valuation of learning in context through reflection on practice and valuing the exchange between peers (ALARCÃO, 2001, 2004, 2015, GATTI , 2008, 2009, 2011, NÓVOA, 1992, IMBERNÓN, 2010); the third, seeking to analyze the performance of school managers in the current educational context (ABRUCIO, 2010; BURGOS and CANEGAL, 2011). The results show that the implementation of time-activity and its use as a training space present difficulties, which are apparent from macro and micro structural issues, among others, factors attributed to the absence of training for school managers, failures in the monitoring and evaluation process, time of teachers and managers as conflictive terrain, limiting pedagogical management, fragile conceptions about continuing education in the school, latent and evident conflicts in the relational field. The study also provided the verification of possibilities for continuing education in the school, such as: legal guarantees, recognition of continuing teacher education as a relevant action for education, recognition of teachers as holders of rights that aspire for training throughout the career. It also allowed for the advancement of theoretical reflection on the implications of public policies aimed at teacher education and its complex implementation process. In order to confront the problems identified and in view of the prerogatives of the Law, an Educational Action Plan (PAE) was proposed as a possible feasibility because it demands small costs for the Coordination. Along with the PAE, some recommendations to the State Secretariat of Education (SEDUC / RO) are presented, which are considered to have a positive impact on the problems identified by the study.

Rousínov, městské polyfunkční centrum za náměstím / Rousínov, the City Multifunctional Centre behind the SquareJajtnerová, Martina January 2017 (has links)
Diploma thesis suggests a new functional use of former vocational boarding school near town center of Rousínov and deals with its reconstruction and modification to serve the new purpose. Current conditions of communication routes and public welfare are being analyzed in order to select proper urban model, that would be applied. Two buildings of former dormitories are to be replaced by leisure time activity center and multifunctional house with commercial space and retirement house respectively. The purpose of former canteen will be left as it this, although it is meant to be enhanced by adding cafeteria with roof garden. In the given context, an architectural design was elaborated while using former structures and layout but with new inner structure. Vertical wooden structures with dynamically spaced elements are used as a common feature. Apart from design of the buildings themselves a special care was also taken while creating the environment. Parks are laid out in a polygon grid, shaped by the straight lines of communication routes.

Pharmacokinetic models in positron emission tomography (PET) allow for the estimation
of physiological parameters linked to the dynamic accumulation of a radiotracer. Estimated parameters are biased by noise in dynamic PET images during the fitting of Time Activity Curves
(TAC). Image quality in dynamic PET is limited by counting statistics and influenced by the chosen reconstruction parameters in terms of spatial and temporal resolution. Clear recommendations
and guidelines for the reconstruction parameters that should be used do not exist at the moment
for dynamic PET. The goal of this masters project is to evaluate the bias in the pharmacokinetic
parameters estimation to find the optimal PET reconstruction parameters in terms of spatial resolution and noise levels. More precisely, this project aims to determine which AIF model produces
the best fits, but also which weight noise model allows for the best parameters estimation with the
two compartment model. It would then be possible to plan the PET image reconstruction more
finely and potentially improve spatial resolution. To test the pharmacokinetic parameters’ biases
under different noise levels, a Digital Reference Object (DRO) with information and specifications
found from the litterature will be built. Then, numerical simulations will be done with that DRO to
find the optimal noise level and value for the pharmacokinetic parameter. A reduced bias in these
parameters and an improved spatial resolution would allow the detection of tumors or lesions at
earlier stages, which could potentially allow for a more potent treatment with less short and long
term side effects. It would also allow the visualization and quantification of lesion heterogeneity.

GIS-based Episode Reconstruction Using GPS Data for Activity Analysis and Route Choice Modeling / GIS-based Episode Reconstruction Using GPS DataDalumpines, Ron 26 September 2014 (has links)
Most transportation problems arise from individual travel decisions. In response, transportation researchers had been studying individual travel behavior – a growing trend that requires activity data at individual level. Global positioning systems (GPS) and geographical information systems (GIS) have been used to capture and process individual activity data, from determining activity locations to mapping routes to these locations. Potential applications of GPS data seem limitless but our tools and methods to make these data usable lags behind. In response to this need, this dissertation presents a GIS-based toolkit to automatically extract activity episodes from GPS data and derive information related to these episodes from additional data (e.g., road network, land use).
The major emphasis of this dissertation is the development of a toolkit for extracting information associated with movements of individuals from GPS data. To be effective, the toolkit has been developed around three design principles: transferability, modularity, and scalability. Two substantive chapters focus on selected components of the toolkit (map-matching, mode detection); another for the entire toolkit. Final substantive chapter demonstrates the toolkit’s potential by comparing route choice models of work and shop trips using inputs generated by the toolkit.
There are several tools and methods that capitalize on GPS data, developed within different problem domains. This dissertation contributes to that repository of tools and methods by presenting a suite of tools that can extract all possible information that can be derived from GPS data. Unlike existing tools cited in the transportation literature, the toolkit has been designed to be complete (covers preprocessing up to extracting route attributes), and can work with GPS data alone or in combination with additional data. Moreover, this dissertation contributes to our understanding of route choice decisions for work and shop trips by looking into the combined effects of route attributes and individual characteristics. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
