Forsblom, Jonatan January 2023 (has links)
Tor Andræ’s I myrtenträdgården is the only comprehensive work on sufism written in Swedish language. The concept ”sufism” is interesting when it comes to conceptual shifts and according to Carl W. Ernst, ”sufism” is a westernised construction of an eastern phenomenon. This study examines Andræ's text in the light of Ernst's theory. The aim is to investigate if rhetoric with its theories on topos, fallacies and identification can help us gain insight into this construction and the discussion of sufism in general, and how conceptual shifts takes place in a specific material. The study tells us that Tor Andræ’s I Myrtenträdgården, despite his good intention, shows a hegemonic picture of a sufism with its roots in christianity, a picture that helps to maintain the confusion surrounding the concept. The study also shows that it is mainly through argumentation and identification that this construction takes place. Rhetorical criticism, with its theories, is therefore a fine instrument for highlighting this construction at work.

Bologna "in noir" ve vybraných prózách Carla Lucarelliho / Bologna "in noir" in chosen proses by Carlo Lucarelli

Novotná, Alžběta January 2015 (has links)
The abstract Introducing part of the work is focused on development of literary genre noir in Italian context, especially on ca. last twenty years, introduces its authors in the area of Emilia- Romagna and Bologna as a city of crime. In the analytic part, the two of Lucarelli's noir series with commissioner Coliandro and inspector Negro are comparatively analised from following chosen aspects: the character of protagonist, the character of criminal, the type of a crime, investigative methods, settings, and in the end language, expression means and role of the narrator. In conclusion, the specifics of literary genre noir in settings of Bologna are described, including the relation between fiction and reality in Lucarelli's writings and the constants of the author's poetic are outlined on the basis of comparative analysis of the series.

Cesty a zastavení: role hostince ve fantasy literatuře / Journeys and Standstills: The Role of Inns in Fantasy Literature

Melichová, Magda January 2018 (has links)
(in English) The thesis aimed to explore the topos of inn in relation to the topos of journey in fantasy literature. The first step was to define the term fantasy literature with regard to the set of texts selected for the analysis; namely their connection to mythology and fairy tales, genres working with hero's initiation journey. Integral part of the thesis was to consider theoretical works focused on the image of pubs in literature, as well as a short description of the form and function of this topos in other genres. The subject of the analysis were inns from six fictional worlds representing a cross-section of the genre from the half of the 20th century until present time, while the selected examples fall mostly into the sub-genre of epic fantasy. The analysis showed that the inns have four primary functions: hero's intimate space, place of meeting and cognition, place of transformation and place of stories. Each of these functions is connected to a specific part of the initiation journey and represents its beginning, or one of its tests. All these functions are also connected to certain issues related to hero's psychological journey, namely the issue of trust, identity and will. The inns which serve as hero's intimate space have a special position; they reflect his or her state of mind and...

L'Archer, Marie-Claude 08 1900 (has links)
Salvianus is an important author when studying fifth century history. He witnessed the barbarian invasion and destruction of his native Gaul, yet he expressed positive evaluations of the Barbarians in this treaty De gubernatione dei. A careful study of Salvianus’ analysis of these Barbarians reveals that he often used topoï when discussing them. However, contrary to Roman literary tradition, he also reversed these topoï and portrayed them in a positive light. This Master’s thesis examines and identifies these topoï, and assesses the extent to which Salvianus adhered to the Romans’ preconceived ideas on Barbarians in each case. This research will demonstrate that although he used traditional literary forms, Salvian was able to express original ideas through the manipulation of the Roman literary tradition.

Cubical models of homotopy type theory : an internal approach

Orton, Richard Ian January 2019 (has links)
This thesis presents an account of the cubical sets model of homotopy type theory using an internal type theory for elementary topoi. Homotopy type theory is a variant of Martin-Lof type theory where we think of types as spaces, with terms as points in the space and elements of the identity type as paths. We actualise this intuition by extending type theory with Voevodsky's univalence axiom which identifies equalities between types with homotopy equivalences between spaces. Voevodsky showed the univalence axiom to be consistent by giving a model of homotopy type theory in the category of Kan simplicial sets in a paper with Kapulkin and Lumsdaine. However, this construction makes fundamental use of classical logic in order to show certain results. Therefore this model cannot be used to explain the computational content of the univalence axiom, such as how to compute terms involving univalence. This problem was resolved by Cohen, Coquand, Huber and Mortberg, who presented a new model of type theory in Kan cubical sets which validated the univalence axiom using a constructive metatheory. This meant that the model provided an understanding of the computational content of univalence. In fact, the authors present a new type theory, cubical type theory, where univalence is provable using a new "glueing" type former. This type former comes with appropriate definitional equalities which explain how the univalence axiom should compute. In particular, Huber proved that any term of natural number type constructed in this new type theory must reduce to a numeral. This thesis explores models of type theory based on the cubical sets model of Cohen et al. It gives an account of this model using the internal language of toposes, where we present a series of axioms which are sufficient to construct a model of cubical type theory, and hence a model of homotopy type theory. This approach therefore generalises the original model and gives a new and useful method for analysing models of type theory. We also discuss an alternative derivation of the univalence axiom and show how this leads to a potentially simpler proof of univalence in any model satisfying the axioms mentioned above, such as cubical sets. Finally, we discuss some shortcomings of the internal language approach with respect to constructing univalent universes. We overcome these difficulties by extending the internal language with an appropriate modality in order to manipulate global elements of an object.

Diagrammes et Catégories

Jedrzejewski, Franck 01 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Algèbres à factorisation et Topos supérieurs exponentiables / Factorisation Algebra and Exponentiable Higher Toposes

Lejay, Damien 23 September 2016 (has links)
This thesis is made of two independent parts, both relying heavily on the theory of ∞-categories. In the first chapter, we approach two different ways to formalize modern particle physics, through the theory of vertex algebras and the theory of factorisation algebras a la Costello. We show in particular that in the case of ‘topological field theories’, they are equivalent. More precisely, we show that the ∞-category of non-unital factorization vector bundles on a smooth complex variety X is equivalent to the ∞-category of non-unital finite dimensional EM-algebras where M is the topological manifold associated to X. In the second one, with Mathieu Anel, we study a characterization of exponentiable objects of the∞-category of∞-toposes.We show that an ∞-topos is exponentiable if and only if its ∞-category of sheaves of spaces is continuous. An important consequence is the fact that the ∞-category of sheaves of spectra on an exponentiable ∞-topos is a dualisable object of the ∞-category of cocontinuous stable ∞-categories endowed with its usual tensor product. This chapter also includes a ix construction of∞-coends from the theory of tensor products of cocomplete∞- categories, together with a description of∞-categories of sheaves on exponentiable ∞-toposes in terms of Leray sheaves.

Äganderätt i svensk skogsdebatt : En retorisk analys av hinder och möjligheter för samförstånd i en polariserad debatt / Property rights in Swedish forest debate : A rhetorical analysis of obstacles and possibilites for mutual understanding in a polarized debate

Männikkö, Johanna January 2022 (has links)
The climate crisis has increased the demands on Swedish forestry and given fuel to an already polarized debate concerning how Swedish forests should be managed and what constitutes sustainable forestry. Questions of ownership and who should have a say in the matter is at the center of this conflict. This essay examines the topic of ownership in the Swedish forest debate. The argumentation of stakeholders in the debate was analyzed to show which topoi contribute to the conflict and create inertia towards reaching mutual understanding. Thirty-nine opinion articles from Swedish news media, published between April and October 2021, were analyzed through a critical textual analysis. Two primary groupings among the debaters were found: those who argue to strengthen the rights of forest owners, and those who argue for more regulation or conservation. Identified topoi show that emotions and trust play a key role in the conflict. Ways of working with this and possibilities for discursive meeting places are discussed. Making explicit important values, clearly defining important terms, and focusing on the right subject matters are also suggested to enhance possibilities for mutual understanding.

Existential completion and pseudo-distributive laws: an algebraic approach to the completion of doctrines

Trotta, Davide 17 December 2019 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis is to combine the categorical approach to logic given by the study of doctrines, with the universal algebraic techniques given by the theory of the pseudo-monads and pseudo-distributive laws. Every completions of doctrines is then formalized by a pseudo-monad, and then combinations of these are studied by the analysis of the pseudo-distributive laws. The starting point are the works of Maietti and Rosolini, in which they describe three completions for elementary doctrines: the first which adds full comprehensions, the second comprehensive diagonals, and the third quotients. Then we determine the existential completion of a primary doctrine, and we prove that the 2-monad obtained from it is lax-idempotent, and that the 2-category of existential doctrines is isomorphic to the 2-category of algebras for this 2-monad. We also show that the existential completion of an elementary doctrine is again elementary and we extend the notion of exact completion of an elementary existential doctrine to an arbitrary elementary doctrine. Finally we present the elementary completion for a primary doctrine whose base category has finite limits. In particular we prove that, using a general results about unification for first order languages, we can easily add finite limits to a syntactic category, and then apply the elementary completion for syntactic doctrines. We conclude with a complete description of elementary completion for primary doctrine whose base category is the free product completion of a discrete category, and we show that the 2-monad constructed from the 2-adjunction is lax-idempotent.
