”Maybe it’s a cultural thing” : En jämförelse mellan två universitets vägledningsverksamheter i Sverige och USA

Huhtimo, Emma, Fransson, Amanda January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to identify significant differences between the counseling centers at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Umeå University. Another main objective is to provide suggestions on how study and career counselors can develop their counseling centers on the basis of the differences identified. This study is a comparative field study with qualitative interviews. The informants are six study and career counselors that provide a picture of how the counseling centers are organized. They talk about their jobs and working practices as well as the need to develop their organizations. They also point out their counseling skills. Counseling methods proven effective internationally, counseling traditions influencing the practice of counseling today and the differences between the Study and Career Counseling Program in Sweden and USA are the theoretical points from where we take our support. The results show that there are in fact big differences. The differences considered to be of most importance is that Umeå University has a well-developed online counseling (e- counseling) and drop-in counseling but has no career counseling available to all students. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is devoid of all face to face e-counseling and drop-in counseling but adds a strong focus on career counseling. The conclusion is that both counseling centers can develop its counseling by learning from these differences through an exchange of counseling skills.

Close to the Source

McCormack, Meghan E 17 December 2011 (has links)
Abstract Close to the Source is comprised of a series of nonfiction vignettes about the artisan, agricultural, and culinary methods of Italy. In Close to the Source the human relationship with nature, food, and art is reexamined while a series of rich characters help bring the material to life. Through interviews, research, and first-hand experiences, the author attempts to archive fading artisan and food-related techniques and rituals. In the process, a cultural critique about the importance of the practical arts in contemporary times emerges. The thesis contains four sections: Terra/Land; Art and Artisans; Pane/Bread; and Compagnia/Company.

Lautnerová, Anna January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to find out how the European religious traditions reflect in modern tourism. To analyze this, a specific example of Pays Cathare, a southern France's destination, is used. The first part of this paper deals with the main religions that affected the history of Europe and describes the most important religious monuments. Subsequently, it focuses on France, its religion history and situation in the domain of tourism. The next chapter explains the historic and religious background of the so-called Cathar movement and specifies the area of Pays Cathare. The last part describes the tourism in the Pays Cathare. It examines various factors of development of local tourism, main tourist's segments, history and actual management of tourism. All obtained information is then used within the compilation of the SWOT analysis, assessment of the importance of the medieval tradition of Catharism for modern tourism in the area of Pays Cathare and formulation of general conclusions that can be applied in other European destinations rich in religious traditions.

Corinthians Paulista, S. E. Palmeiras e São Paulo F.C. (1894-1942) / \"Blind is the one who only sees the ball\". Football in São Paulo and the formation of the major teams from São Paulo: S. C. Corinthians Paulista, S. E. Palmeiras and São Paulo F. C. (1894-1942)

Streapco, João Paulo França 19 January 2011 (has links)
In recent years, many studies on the practice of football in Brazil have been carried out in different areas of knowledge. Understood as a broad-ranging social phenomenon, football which was once despised by intellectuals and academia has become a privileged source for the study of many interconnected social phenomena. Despite the development of said studies, many documentary sources produced in the world of football throughout the twentieth century still have not been systematically assessed. Hence, because this study is part of context of historiographical renewal referred to as New Cultural History, its objective is to further understand certain aspects of the São Paulo society present in the main football fields, teams and stadiums with respect to the period subject matter hereof (1894 1942). The establishment of a group of practitioners and supporters, together with government intervention, the construction of fields and stadiums, the emergence of three major football clubs in the city, disputes over control of revenues generated by the sport itself and its gradual pathway towards becoming increasingly professional reveal to be excellent documentary sources for better understanding the complexity of the modernization process that took pplace in São Paulo and the consequences thereof for its citizens during the period covered in this study.

Une quête problématique de soi dans le roman maghrébin contemporain : religion, sexualité, altérité / A problematic quest for the self in contemporary novels from the Maghreb : Religion, Sexuality, Alterity

Labbioui-Harrison, Camille 13 December 2016 (has links)
Those undergoing colonization, surviving pre-independence turmoil, and profiting from the colonizer’s withdrawal by adopting its models, are not looking for an identity. Yet those who are not adaptable, blind to opportunity, or old, are prone to reject models requiring giving up clothing or other such aspects of tradition which, they believe, would grant them a sense of identity – if only their community became homogenous again. The pitiful protagonist in ʿAmal-fil (Year of the Elephant), by Morrocan author Laylā Abū Zayd, and three of the four aged protagonists in ʿUššāq Bayya (The Lovers of Bayya), by Tunisian author Al-Sālimī, have a fear of cultural pollution so acute that they make themselves even sicker than they already were, especially when it comes to money which “rots everything”. Zahra is neither softhearted nor sensuous, and her marriage is brought to an end when her suddenly rich husband takes a lover; and the other three secretly nurture a sexual fantasy about the same woman while the son of the fourth, a visiting émigré who grew rich in Germany, decides to marry her. Zahra eventually turns to God to assure a place for herself in heaven whereas the old men agonize in the dread of hell. By dismissing this fear before they die, the two men who had the easiest youth point to the nature of genuine alterity in their community. It is the perversity of a tradition validated by terrifying religious beliefs, which prevents friendships among adolescent boys and girls, then marries them off with no consideration for their tastes and aptitudes, and then invites the men to brutalize wife and children in compensation. Since very few ever recover from their childhood, the cycle starts again and the tradition survives.

This is a study of the dietary traditions brought from the maternal home of the Italian families of the past and present, such as the interviewees recalled them regarding the material culture, and the experiences in their native land and, subsequently, in the Brás neighborhood and the private space of their own homes. Based on reflections on orality and memory, since the sources used here consisted of testimonies and books of memoirs, we sought to understand the (re)significations often nostalgic and idyllic that these groups created on their past and their habits, as well as the subjectivity of their statements in the present moment, their silences and omissions. From the interviews conducted between the years 2010 to 2012, that prioritized Italians from different regions of Italy and their descendants, we were able to observe the regional differences in cuisine and customs, as well as the terrible experience of hunger, the hardship and the Italian history itself during World War II. As for the descendants, who reports what they learned from their elders, we perceived how this memory was reelaborated and what they incorporated from past generations with regard to values, dietary habits and heritage / Esta pesquisa buscou, por intermédio de depoimentos orais, documentar as referências de apoio e os elementos de arrimo utilizados tanto por imigrantes como por descendentes deles, estabelecidos em São Paulo.

Moreover, the research aims at understanding how the Guarani comprehend their permanence in Jaraguá and their insertion in the urban area, how they see the non-indigenous people and the future of these relationships; that is to say how they manage their life in this metropolis and keep up their tradition. This village is located in an area on the margins of Bandeirantes highway, in the west part of the paulista capital, with few resources for their survival. Its inhabitants live, mainly, from the sale of handicrafts and some sporadic donation. The analysis of the collected data seems to indicate that the Guarani at the same time that they fight against the entropy and the messy contact with the non-indigenous people, they notice how essential this contact is for their survival. Taking all these aspects into consideration, they manage to keep their historical and cultural traditions, what could be noticed throughout this research and also in the presentation of the youngsters´vision of the future / Este estudo objetiva retratar uma das aldeias Guarani do bairro do Jaraguá, na cidade de São Paulo, o Tekoa Pyau, enfocando a história de sua formação na ótica da criação de um tekoa, analisando como se reinseriram no espaço geográfico e o culturalizaram, transformando-o em uma parte do universo Guarani.
