L’histoire de la maison et celle du roman se croisent tout particulièrement au XIXe siècle alors que littérature et architecture engagent des chantiers dont Philippe Hamon souligne le parallélisme. La maison comme la maisonnée sont par ailleurs affectées par les évolutions sociétales. Objet privilégié de la description réaliste, la maison a depuis été ébranlée dans ses fondations d’autant que l’intérêt même de son exposition s’est trouvé remis en cause. La question de la représentation est au cœur des crises que traverse le roman. Le retour à la fiction initié au tournant des années 1980, en réactivant le romanesque, favorise-t-il la délivrance de nouveaux permis de construire et le réinvestissement d’un lieu redevenu fréquentable? Cette thèse se propose d’explorer le motif de la maison dans l’œuvre romanesque de quatre romanciers contemporains, J.M.G. Le Clézio, Pascal Quignard, Sylvie Germain et Marie NDiaye, à l’aune des changements sociologiques comme des problématiques du roman, afin de montrer que la maison offre des perspectives nouvelles pour la fiction. Nous envisagerons un «roman de maison» lequel, comme le roman d’aventure, aurait son espace, ses intrigues, ses personnages. En parcourant des espaces domestiques distincts, nous ferons ressortir un certain nombre d’enjeux esthétiques et poétiques liés au thème et nous nous demanderons si le roman ne serait pas, à notre époque, devenu le refuge le plus sûr et le lieu le plus hospitalier. / The history of home and that of the novel have crossed paths more than once, but hardly ever more so than in the nineteenth century, when literature and architecture began exploring new forms, the similarities of which were aptly pointed out by Philippe Hamon. At the time, both house and home were subjected to deep societal changes, and their worth as literary object was called into question: thus, home, which had long been a favourite topic of the realists, was shaken to its foundations. The very notion of representation lay at the crux of the crises the novel was going through. Around the 1980s, however, the novel began pivoting back towards fiction, thus reviving its core characteristic. Did this return to home promote new building permits, so to speak? Did it make home, as a literary trope, inhabitable once again ? This dissertation shall explore the motif of home in the complete works of four contemporary authors, namely J.M.G. Le Clézio, Pascal Quignard, Sylvie Germain and Marie NDiaye, as analyzed through the prism of sociological changes, as well as of novel-related problematics. By so doing, I hope to demonstrate that home still bears a slew of new perspectives for the fiction genre. I will put forward the notion of a ‘home novel’, which, just like the ‘adventure novel’, is endowed with its very own set of spaces, plots and characters. By delving into various domestic spaces, I shall bring out some of its key aspects, be they aesthetic or poetic, and wonder whether the novel might have become, in the times we live in, the safest and most hospitable haven at our disposal.

La transformation sociale des Antilles françaises qui se produit après la Seconde Guerre mondiale résulte d'un processus interactif historique. Celui-ci se produit entre 1946 et 1961 autour des nouvelles dynamiques de l'après-guerre. Il s'agit du statut départemental, de la décolonisation avec l'explosion des conflits sociaux, de la politique publique de "développement économique et social" avec la planification dans les départements d'outre-mer, et de l'accroissement démographique avec l'apparition d'une nouvelle génération "sociologique". C'est précisément cette interaction qui est à l'origine du nouveau type de société qui émerge aux Antilles à partir des années 1960 sans pour autant que leur structure sociale coloniale ne soit bouleversée. Cette construction qui prend le nom commun de "Départementalisation" est paradoxale car elle va générer des frustrations sociales "modernes", tout en maintenant des frustrations anciennes issues de la société de plantation. En induisant ainsi le passage d'un monde d'"habitation" à un monde de consommation, cette construction permet de comprendre un peu mieux, le maintien, au début du XXIe siècle, d'un malaise social latent dans ces départements en dépit d'une amélioration sensible et générale des conditions de vie. / The social change which takes place in the French West Indies after the Second World War ensues from a historical interactive process. It occurs between 1946 and 1961, within the frame of the new dynamic fostered in the aftermath of the war. Here we refer to he new political status of Department, the outbreak of social conflicts during the process of decolonization, the public policies and the planning of "the economic and social development" of the overseas departements. The dynamic also includes the population growth with the birth of a new generation from the sociological point of view. The aforementioned interaction instils the new type of society emerging in the French West Indies since the 1960's, without drastically changing their colonial social structure. This transformation named "Departmentalization" seems paradoxical because it will generate "modern" social frustrations, while maintaining existing frustrations that stemmed from the plantation society. this process led to the transition from a slave society to a consumer society. It allows us to understand the persistence of a latent social unrest in these departments, in spite of th overall significant improvement of the living conditions during the early twentieth century.

<p>Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar como são feitas as idas e voltas aos cotidianos das três donas-de-casa que são as protagonistas dos contos <em>Devaneio e Embriaguez duma rapariga</em>, <em>Amor</em> e <em>A fuga</em>, de Clarice Lispector e, sobretudo analisar o eventual valor simbólico que a presença dos fatores naturais e da lua exercem sobre estes contos.</p><p>Com apoio nos trabalhos de Ana Carolina de Araújo Abiahy (2006a, 2006b, 2008), Berta Waldman (1993) e Yudith Rosenbaum (2002) e dos conceitos-teóricos de gênero apresentados por Chatarina Edfeldt e Anabela Galhardo Couto (2008) em <em>Mulheres que escrevem Mulheres que lêem</em> procuram-se respostas à questões de como, por que e através de que as protagonistas fazem suas escapadas de seus cotidianos e como podem ser extraídos valores simbólicos denunciadores das causas das angústias das personagens.</p><p>Dentre as conclusões estão, que as protagonistas sentem um incômodo em suas vidas e são por isto, chamadas para fazerem suas “idas” pelo que a lua e a natureza simbolizam: um chamado para uma outra vida, livre de suas situações aprisionantes. Conclui-se também que após as suas idas as personagens voltam ao seu cotidiano normal por causa dos valores patriarcais internalizados, dentre os quais estão incluídas a culpa, amor à família e a impossibilidade destas mulheres de cuidarem autonomamente de sí mesmas. No entanto, percebem-se que após os questionamentos feitos em suas idas elas voltam conscientizadas, despertadas para uma nova maneira de olharem para si mesmas, suas situações e o papel de gênero que elas fazem.</p> / <p>This work has the purpose to analyze how the departures and arrivals to the daily life are made by the three housewives who composes the main characters in the short-stories <em>Devaneio e Embriaguez duma rapariga,</em> <em>Amor</em> and <em>A fuga</em>, by Clarice Lispector and, above all analyze the eventual symbolic value that the presence of the natures elements and the moon exerts over these short-stories.</p><p>With the support of Ana Carolina de Araújo Abiahy (2006a, 2006b, 2008), Berta Waldman (1993) and Yudith Rosenbaums (2002) works and of the theoretic concepts of gender presented by Chatarina Edfeldt and Anabela Galhardo Couto (2008) in <em>Mulheres que escrevem Mulheres que lêem</em>, answers are sought to the questions of how, why and through what, the main characters make escapes from their everyday lives and, how it is possible to extract symbolic values that denunciates the causes of the main characters anxieties.</p><p>Within the conclusions are that the main characters feel a discomfort with their lives and are because of that, called to make their “departures” through what the moon and the nature symbolizes: a calling to another life, free from their imprisoning situations. Another conclusion is that they come back because of the internalized patriarchal values, among which are included the guilt, the love to the family and the impossibility of these women to take care of themselves. However, it is noticeable that after the questionings made in their departures and arrivals they return with awareness, awakened to a new way to look at themselves, their situations and the gender roles that they play.</p> / <p>Detta arbete har som syfte att analysera hur turerna och returerna till vardagen görs av de tre hemmafruar som utgör huvudpersonerna i berättelserna <em>Devaneio e Embriaguez duma rapariga</em>, <em>Amor</em> och <em>A fuga</em>, av Clarice Lispector och, framförallt analysera det eventuella symboliska värdet som närvaron av naturens faktorer och månen utövar över dessa berättelser.</p><p>Med stöd av Ana Carolina de Araújo Abiahy (2006a, 2006b, 2008), Berta Waldman (1993) och Yudith Rosenbaums (2002) arbeten samt av genus-teoretiska begrepp som pressenteras av Chatarina Edfeldt och Anabela Galhardo Couto (2008) i <em>Mulheres que escrevem Mulheres que lêem</em>, sökes svar till frågeställningarna hur, varför och genom vad, huvudpersonerna flyr från sina vardagsliv och, hur det är möjligt att utvinna symboliska värden som anger anledningarna till huvudpersonernas ångest.</p><p>Bland slutsatserna finnes att huvudpersonerna känner ett obehag med sina liv och blir därför, kallade till att göra sina ”turer” genom det som månen och naturen symboliserar: en kallelse till ett annat liv, fritt från sina fängslande situationer. Ytterligare en slutsatts är att de färdas tillbaka på grund av de internaliserade patriarkaliska värderingar, som inkluderar skulden, kärleken till familjen samt omöjligheten för dessa kvinnor att klara sig själva. Emellertid, märks det att efter de diskussioner som de gjort i sina turer kommer de tillbaka medvetandegjorda, uppväckta till ett nytt sätt att se på sig själva, sina situationer och de genusroller som de spelar.</p>

Il presente lavoro costituisce la prima ricostruzione del lavoro di Gianna Manzini alla radio e alla televisione, che comincia nel 1947 e si conclude nel 1968. Gli interventi radiofonici sono divisi in trasmissioni di moda e costume e di critica letteraria (capitolo 1) e racconti scritti per la radio (capitolo 3); le trasmissioni televisive sono ripartite in sceneggiature realizzate e non realizzate (capitolo 3). I testi dei programmi sono stati identificati nei fondi archivistici della Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori di Milano, dell’Archivio del Novecento dell’Università La Sapienza di Roma e della Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma. Il lavoro si basa dunque sulla descrizione e l’analisi di materiale inedito, come L’Almanacco dei sogni e Il paesaggio come fatto personale, e le sceneggiature Il grande indiscreto, Il nome di battesimo e Alfredino.
La ricognizione ha dimostrato come Gianna Manzini possedesse una consapevolezza mediatica tale da essere in grado di adattare il proprio stile alle specifiche esigenze del mezzo di comunicazione. Tuttavia, l’attività radio-televisiva non può essere considerata del tutto autonoma e disgiunta dalla carriera letteraria, con la quale intrattiene un rapporto strettissimo e osmotico. / This research aims at providing a first and thorough description of Gianna Manzini’s work for the Italian Broadcasting (RAI), a collaboration which started in 1947 and ended in 1968. Her works for the radio are divided into fashion and literary criticism broadcasting (chapter 1) and original radio screenplays (chapter 2); her works for the television are divided into broadcasted and non broadcasted scripts (chapter 3). The texts of these programmes have been found in the following archives: Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori (Milan), Archivio del Novecento, Università La Sapienza (Rome) and Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale (Rome). The thesis both describes and analyzes original and unpublished works and screenplays, such as L’Almanacco dei sogni, Il paesaggio come fatto personale, Il grande indiscreto, Il nome di battesimo and Alfredino.
In the end, the research showed evidence that Gianna Manzini was well aware that different media require different writing characteristics and was able to act accordingly. Nonetheless, her literary and broadcasting activity cannot be considered as two separate carriers, being actually strictly bound to each other.

With her shoulder to the wheel: the public life of Erika Theron (1907-1990)Tayler, Judith Anne 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a biographical study of Erika Theron (1907-1990), an Afrikaner woman who played a significant role in many aspects of public life in South Africa in a critical time in the country‘s history. The study seeks to give recognition to her achievements, which have received scant attention in a historiography with a masculine bias. At the same time it examines her changing role from collaborator to critic of the apartheid system.
Certain defining features of Theron‘s life have been highlighted. First, Theron grew up in a staunchly Afrikaner nationalist, service-oriented family which encouraged loyalty to her own people and civic responsibility. Second, she was unusual among Afrikaner women of her generation, in that she was highly educated, independent and ready to assume leadership roles. She became a pioneer in a number of fields, attaining high professional rank and holding important public offices – frequently as the first woman to do so in the country.
The thesis focuses on five areas of Theron‘s public life. After returning from post-graduate studies abroad, she worked with Hendrik Verwoerd in the campaign to uplift poor whites, particularly the rehabilitation and re-integration of the Afrikaner poor. She thereafter commenced a long career as a social work academic, which included a number of milestones for her new discipline, for the profession of social work and for the advancement of women in academia. From the 1950s she served on the town council of Stellenbosch, including terms as deputy mayor and mayor. She played an important role in historic conservation but was also instrumental in the rigorous institution of apartheid structures in the town during the early days of National Party rule. In the early 1970s she served as chairman of the Commission of Enquiry into Coloured Affairs which influenced her personal views on the country‘s race policies. This work covering the period 1795 to 1948 has four main features. It
firstly examines the role of international and domestic factors in
determining regional interaction and cooperation between South Africa
and Chile. Secondly, it documents the whims of the international
community, and more particularly the world powers which was a
motivating factor in Chilean and South African politics, economy, society
and their bilateral relations. Thirdly it covers the period when Britain rose
to world power status. Eventually, this gave way to her displacement by
Germany and then ultimately the United States. This study's fourth feature
is that it marks the first documented account of direct contact between the
inhabitants at the Cape of Good Hope and Latin America. The period ends
with a cornerstone in the history of South African-Chilean bilateral relations
when direct diplomatic and consular relations were established by both

Subversive narrative and thematic strategies : a critical appraisal of Fay Weldon's FictionDowling, Finuala Rachel 06 1900 (has links)
Fay Weldon is a popular, prolific author whose oeuvre stretches from 1967 to the present
and includes 20 novels, three collections of short stories and numerous stage, radio and
television plays, scripts and adaptations. This thesis limits itself to her fiction and follows
the chronological course of Weldon's writing career in five chapters.
Fay Weldon's fiction, situated at the intersection of postmodemism and feminism, is
doubly subversive. It both overturns 'reasonable' narrative conventions and wittily
deconstructs the specious terminology used to define women. Weldon's disobedient female
protagonists - madwomen, criminals, outcasts and she-devils - assert the power of the Other.
Gynocentric themes - single parenthood, sisterhood, reproduction, motherhood, sex and
marriage - are transformed by Weldon into uproarious feminist revenge comedy. This she
achieves through an intertextuality which often involves unorthodox typography, genreswopping
and metafictional devices. Moreover, a unique ventriloquism enables her
omniscient first-person narrators to mimic 'Fay Weldon' herself.
Since her narrators are rebels and iconoclasts, Weldon has always been viewed as a
subversive individual worthy of media attention, especially interviews. For this reason, and
because she is a woman writer who struggled initially against social and domestic odds, the
thesis incorporates in its argument the author's biography and public personae.
Chapter One explores the connections between Weldon's first novels - notably Down
Among the Women (1971) - and early liberationist and anthropological feminism. In Chapter
Two, Bakhtin's dialogic imagination and Derrida's differance provide the basis for a
discussion of multiplicity in Weldon's novels of the late 1970s, particularly Praxis (1979),
shortlisted for the Booker prize. Chapter Three tests the limits of a psychoanalytical model
in accounting for Weldon's novels of (m)Otherhood, including The Life and Loves of a SheDevil
(1983).
Theories of humour and carnival inform Chapter Four's analysis of how Weldon's wit
- at its tendentious best in The Heart of the Country (1987) - declines into innocence.
Finally, Chapter Five sees Weldon's flagging literary reputation as the symptom of authorial
exhaustion and retreat from a feminist agenda. This concluding chapter is, however,

This thesis sets out to investigate new notation symbols, systems, and string techniques in some one
hundred 20th century string quartets, selected from a variety of composers. The analysis includes
compositions that have, through contemporary aesthetic ideals, extended musical and technical
resources and stimulated the development of compositional methods in such a way as to influence
later works in the genre.

The thesis divided into two parts : Histoiy and Research
Part One is a brief history of 20th century music, and includes the development o f the string quartet
from earliest times up to the mid-century. Part Two researches string techniques and notation from
the turn of the century up to 1990.
The historical perspective demonstrates that after World War n, with the emergence o f the electronic
age and a changing social and intellectual climate, traditional concepts were being challenged.
Composers facing the dilemma affecting music in general, and the string quartet in particular, had
to adapt to radically developing techniques and styles. Sounds and syntax o f a different type were
initially, but unsuccessfully, sought to unify the divergent thinking o f the time. Ultimately, the
developmental paths took shape from the problem itself and different approaches emerged to master
the multi-faceted dimensions available to composers.
Part Two investigates music syntax from the viewpoint of recording new symbols, notation systems
and string techniques. Quartets of the first half of the century show that both the dissolution and the
extension o f traditional processes were contained, importantly, within the continued use of
conventional notation. The impact and significance of these quartets within the context of 20th
century development cannot be ignored. However, the quartets researched post-1960 demonstrate that
composers have enlarged all parameters of the genre through the extension of traditional resources
and by radical innovation.
This research demonstrates that the emergence of new symbols and string techniques in the second
half of the century has been largely on an arbitrary basis. Nevertheless^ broad classification of these

his dissertation examines representations of the Zulu in a variety of discourses. It also examines the role of black nationalisms in the construction of Zuluist discourse. The production of images of the Zulu began with the first Anglo-Zulu encounter in the nineteenth century. In 1879, the Anglo-Zulu War set a trend for image-making which was developed further in the twentieth century. The appearance of The Washing of the Spears and Zulu, initiated a chapter in the study of the Zulu which gave rise to publications that created startling mages of the Zulu. Despite
the publication of the James Stuart Archive, as well as serious studies of the Zulu, authors continued to use the same popular interpretations of the Zulu. Este trabalho analisa a trajetória da classe trabalhadora venezuelana como parte do Proceso Bolivariano, sendo este entendido como um conjunto de acontecimentos de caráter político e social inaugurado na Venezuela pela crise pré-revolucionária do Sacudón (27 de Fevereiro de 1989 – 27F) e que se desenvolve como resultado de diferentes correlações de forças sociais até os dias atuais, sob o governo dirigido pelo Presidente Hugo Chávez. A tese volta-se para o estudo de dois sujeitos fundamentais do Processo Bolivariano que se encontram muitas vezes preteridos nos estudos sobre a Venezuela atual, cuja ênfase orienta-se para a análise da liderança chavista e seu governo. São eles, a classe operária industrial e os trabalhadores precarizados moradores dos barrios ─ espaço de segregação social que ocupa parte significativa da paisagem urbana venezuelana. Para compreender e explicar a emergência desses sujeitos no cenário nacional são buscadas suas raízes econômico-sociais nos elementos próprios da estrutura do capitalismo dependente petroleiro-rentista. Partindo de uma história econômica da Venezuela desde os anos 1920, identificamos a constituição de um Exército Industrial de Reserva de proporções inauditas. Com base na experiência de mais de três gerações vivendo nos barrios, os trabalhadores precarizados ingressaram no cenário político nacional venezuelano como um movimento de massas particular, com demandas e modos de luta específicos. Inspiradas em práticas insurgentes que remanescem da experiência guerrilheira dos anos 1960, essas lutas ganham forma nas mobilizações callejeras das décadas de 1980 e 1990. A intensa atividade política desse setor, em aliança com setores reformistas das Forças Armadas Nacionais venezuelanas que se arremetem na busca pelo controle do aparato estatal em 4 de fevereiro de 1992, os militares bolivarianos, constitui-se um movimiento bolivariano radical de masas, de caráter policlassista. Depois de abandonar a estratégia insurrecional de acesso ao poder em prol da via institucional, a chegada de Hugo Chávez na Presidência inaugurará uma nova fase do Proceso. Ocupando posição nada desprezível no aparato estatal, a aliança policlassista consubstanciada no governo bolivariano enfrentará o acirramento da luta de classes no interior da qual se recolocará a centralidade do operariado industrial como sujeito central da mudança estrutural. Assim, se o 27F marcou a crise pré-revolucionária e o 4F uma situação revolucionária, o governo bolivariano vem revelando-se mais recentemente como um instrumento de contenção das demandas sociais. Ao mesmo tempo, a exacerbação da luta de classes abriu caminhos para o comparecimento da classe operária industrial na luta pelo poder com experiências significativas de controle da produção em importantes atividades econômicas do país, como são as indústrias do petróleo (PDVSA), alumínio (CVG-ALCASA) e siderúrgica (SIDOR). Baseado em fontes quantitativas e qualitativas, com uso de séries estatísticas históricas e coleta de testemunhos de História Oral, este trabalho procura oferecer uma interpretação rigorosa, ainda que provisória, da história recente venezuelana a partir da perspectiva da luta de classes. / The present thesis annalyses the trajectory of Venezuelan working class within the Proceso Bolivariano, which is understood as a compound of political and social events in this country inaugurated by the pre revolutionary crisis driven by the Sacudón (February the 27th, 1989 – 27F) and since then has evolved as a result of varying correlation of the social forces up to the present. Stemming from an economic history of Venezuela since the 1920s, the thesis presents evidence on the upsurging of precarious urban workers as the main actors of the Proceso Bolivariano. The relevance assumed by this working class sector is discussed as resulting from the very constitution of the Venezuelan oil dependent capitalism and its rentier bias. The thesis remarks that this particular form of capitalism reproduced throughout the twentieth century an Industrial Reserve Army of incomparable dimensions. In this process, the precarious urban workers have been socially segregated in the barrios (shantty towns) and had their identity forged on day-to-day struggles experience for survival. In this sense, it is argued that this working class sector emerged at the national political escenario in Venezuela as a particular mass movement, carrying out its claims and specific ways of struggles. The political actions sustained by those social subjects, in an alliance with reformer military from the Venezuelan National Armed Forces – the Bolivarian Military – crafted what we named the Bolivarian radical mass movement, inaugurating a new historical bloc which accessed Venezuela’s state apparatus departing from 1999. Using insurgent methods derived both from the 1960s guerrilla experience and the popular extraction within the Venezuelan Army, this historical bloc unfolded a strategy to control State’s apparatus evoking a political discourse advocating for a revolutionary transformation. Regarding the former elements, the thesis discusses how the pre revolutionary crisis of the 27F moved towards a revolutionary situation, when dominant classe’s difficulties for unity opposed them in a stalemate with the military, on February the 4th, 1992 (4 F), and, finally, how this situation evolved to an institutional outcome with ex-Liutenenent Colonel Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías candidature and election for Presidency in 1999. In this sense, the Bolivarian Government is depicted as a new phase of the Proceso. The thesis contends this new phase has sharpen the class struggles and put the industrial working class into centrality, as it will reemerge as main protagonist for social structural change. In conclusion, if the 27F stressed a pre revolutionary crisis and the 4F remarked a revolutionary situation, the thesis contends that multiclassis Bolivarian government turned out to be an instrument for countering radical social demands of the industrial working class and the precarious workers, while at the same time sharpening the class struggles, unfolding a new path for the working class to fight for an alternative power. Using quantitative and qualitative methods and different sorts of research sources, such as historical statistics and Oral History records, this thesis aims at offering a yet provisional contribution to the field of the Venezuelan recent history, considering the class struggles theoretical perspective.
